Abstract:
To compute the similarity of scientific papers, text-based similarity
measures, link-based similarity measures, and hybrid methods can be
applied. The text-based and link-based similarity measures take into
account only a single aspect of scientific papers, content or citations,
respectively. The hybrid methods consider both content and citations;
however, they do not carefully consider the relation between the content
of a pair of papers involved in a citation relationship. In this paper,
we propose a novel method, SimCC (similarity based on content and
citations), that considers both aspects, content and citations, to
compute the similarity of scientific papers. Unlike previous methods,
SimCC effectively reflects both content and authority of scientific
papers simultaneously in similarity computation by applying a new RA
(relevance and authority) weighting scheme. Also, we propose an RA+R
weighting scheme to consider the recency of papers and an RA+E weighting
scheme to take into account the author expertise of papers in similarity
computation. The effectiveness of our proposed method is demonstrated by
extensive experiments on a real-world dataset of scientific papers. The
results show that our method achieves more than 100% improvement in
accuracy in comparison with previous methods. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. All

Abstract:
OBJECTIVES: Academic metrics can be used to compare the productivity of
researchers. We aimed to use a variety of bibliometric parameters to
assess the productivity of neurosurgeons working in the United Kingdom.
METHODS: Neurosurgical consultants working in the United Kingdom were
identified using the Society of British Neurosurgeons' Audit Programme
website. Baseline data collected included year of entry to specialist
register, academic position and award of higher degree. Google Scholar
was used to compute a range of academic metrics for each consultant
including the h-index, hi-norm, e-index and g-index. Non-parametric
tests were used to compare median results.
RESULTS: Median metrics for the whole cohort were: h-index (5), hi-norm
(3), g-index (10.4) and e-index (9). The top 3 units based on h-index
were Addenbrookes (13), Great Ormond Street (12.5) and Queen's Square
(11.5). The h-index correlated with academic position [Prof (17.5),
Senior Lecturer (10.5) and non-academic (5); P < 0.0001], higher degree
[PhD (10), MD (6) and none (4.5); P < 0.0001] and consultant experience
[> 10 year (7), < 10 years (4); P < 0.0001]. No difference was found
based on gender [male (5), female (4); P = 0.12]. The same trends were
seen across the following other metrics: hi-norm, e-index and g-index.
DISCUSSION: This study details the academic impact of United
Kingdom-based neurosurgeons through the analysis of a number of citation
metrics. It provides a benchmark bibliometric profile and we advocate
future comparative assessments as a means to assess impact of and guide
academic policy.

Abstract:
The number of citations that a paper has received reflects the impact of
the article within a particular medical research area. However, which
articles are cited most frequently in diabetes research is unknown. We
aimed to identify the most frequently cited 100 articles that describe
advances focused on diabetes research.
Science Citation Index Expanded database was used to determine the 100
most cited articles in diabetes research. The key characteristics of the
top 100 cited articles, including citation ranking, year of publication,
publishing journal, type of study, h-index, PMC citation, patent
citation, country of origin, funding source, and authorship, were
analyzed.
The number of citations ranged from 10292 to 1121. The 100 most cited
articles were published between 1962 and 2010. New England Journal of
Medicine published the largest number of the most cited articles (n =
23), followed by Diabetes Care (n = 14) and Nature (n = 12). The
greatest number of contributions came from the USA, followed by the UK
and Canada. RCT was the most popular article type, followed by basic
science studies and observational studies. There was a positive
correlation between total citations and h-indexes and PMC citations,
while there was no correlation with patent citations.
The most influential report in diabetes research seems to be RCT, which
is performed to confirm the effectiveness and outcome of anti-diabetes
drugs in patients with diabetes. This study presents insight into the
historical development of diabetes research, and provides foundations
for further investigations.

Abstract:
Biobanks have become indispensable tools for a wide array of life and
environmental sciences, and biotechnology. To evaluate trends in
biobanking, 20,000 bibliographic records were retrieved and analyzed
between 1939 and 2014 from the Scopus database using a series of
biobank-related search terms within titles and keywords. Since the
1990s, the field of biobanking has been, and still is, experiencing
above-average growth in terms of publications, journals, and thematic
orientations. Almost two-thirds of all indexed biobanking documents have
been published in the last decade, with now >1,000 publications in 600
distinct journals per year. Around 50,000 individual authors can be
identified who have so far contributed to the field of biobanking, with
an average of 1.5 publications per author. Author affiliations follow an
uneven distribution: 42% of the authors are based in Europe, 33% in
North America, 13% in Asia, 5% in South America, 4% in Australasia, and
2% in Africa. Analyzing the most common title words revealed (as did the
journals) a strong focus on blood banking, but other biospecimen
typesespecially seeds, cells, and tissueshave been gaining increasing
weight recently. Among medical applications, transfusion dominates,
followed by transplantation. While a noticeable increase in disease and
especially health occurred at the beginning of the millennium, cohort
and consent seem to have become high-relevance topics only in this
decade. In terms of banked organisms, human dominates, followed by
viruses and plants (especially represented through seed banking). A very
rough estimate based on subject categories suggests that a third of all
publications in biobanking focus on organisms other than humans.
However, animal, fungal, and microbial biobanking are still
underrepresented, especially when considering their shares in global
biodiversity.

Abstract:
The three much cited laws of scientometrics are the laws of Bradford,
Lotka and Zipf. The authors briefly review the scientific career of the
men behind the names, and that how they discovered the laws named after
them. An outline is also given of the scientific aftermath of the laws
and of the oeuvre of their eponym.
