Abstract:
Does the life cycle of economic papers differ across fields of economic
research? By constructing and analyzing a large dataset that combines
information on 9,672 articles published in the top five economic
journals from 1970 to 2000 with detailed yearly citation data obtained
from Google Scholar, we find that published articles do have a life
cycle that differs across fields of economic research (which we divide
into the categories of applied, applied theory, econometric methods, and
theory). Applied and applied theory papers are the clear winners in
terms of citation counts. For the first years after their publication,
they receive higher numbers of citations per year than papers in other
fields of research do. They also reach a higher peak number of citations
per year and apparently sustain those peak levels for longer, in
addition to being cited over longer periods of time (i.e., they have a
longer lifespan). Citation patterns are much less favorable for
theoretical papers, which are the object of fewer citations per annum in
the first years following publication, have lower peak numbers and a
shorter lifespan. Econometric method papers are a special case; the
pattern for most of these papers is similar to the pattern for theory
papers, but the most successful papers (as measured by the number of
citations) on econometric methods are also the most successful papers in
the entire discipline of economics. (JEL A14)

Abstract:
This work provides an overview of the research impact of technology
lasers. This was evaluated through scientific bibliometric indicators
related with published journal articles. Since 1960 a total of 1.2
million indexed journal articles were published with the term laser as
topic keyword. The bibliometric analyses of those articles shown an
h-index of 590, however with a fairly impact in terms of citations.
Nevertheless, the more impactful works were published in the 1995-2005
period.

Abstract:
We tackle the problem of automatically filtering studies while preparing
Systematic Reviews (SRs) which normally entails manually inspecting
thousands of studies to identify the few to be included. The problem is
modeled as an imbalanced data classification task where the cost of
misclassifying the minority class is higher than the cost of
misclassifying the majority class. This work introduces a novel method
for representing systematic reviews based not only on lexical features,
but also utilizing word clustering and citation features. This novel
representation is shown to outperform previously used features in
representing systematic reviews, regardless of the classifier. Our work
utilizes a random forest classifier with the novel features to
accurately predict included studies with high recall. The parameters of
the random forest are automatically configured using heuristics methods
thus allowing us to provide a product that is usable in real scenarios.
Experiments on a dataset containing 15 systematic reviews that were
prepared by health care professionals show that our approach can achieve
high recall while helping the SR author save time.

Abstract:
The present paper examines the relation between size, accumulation and
performance for research grants, where we examine the relation between
grant size for Centres of Excellence (CoE) funded by the Danish National
Research Foundation (DNRF) and various ex post research performance
measures, including impact and shares of highly cited articles. We
examine both the relation between size and performance and also how
performance for CoEs evolves over the course of grant periods. In terms
of dynamics, it appears that performance over the grant period (i.e. 10
years) is falling for the largest CoEs, while it is increasing for those
among the smallest half. Overall, multivariate econometric analysis
finds evidence that performance is increasing in grant size and over
time. In both cases, the relation appears to be non/linear, suggesting
that there is a point at which performance peaks. The CoEs have also
been very successful in securing additional funding, which can be viewed
as a 'cumulative effect' of center grants. In terms of new personnel,
the far majority of additional funding is spent on early career
researchers, hence, this accumulation would appear to have a
'generational' dimension, allowing for scientific expertise to be passed
on to an increasing number of younger researchers.

Abstract:
Proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is the dominant fuel cell
technology in terms of system shipments. Although the applications of
the technology have already been on the market for several years,
efforts to improve its performance, cost, and stability continues. There
have been around 500 PEMFC research articles published every year
recently. As the first step of a longer term effort to systematically
detecting technological changes, this study selects PEMFC as the target
technology to visualize its technological development and uncovers its
recent research fronts. We collect PEMFC research articles from the Web
of Science database and establish a citation network using the
associated citation information. Main PEMFC development paths are
uncovered through key-route main path analysis. The main path results
show that modeling is the main focus of PEMFC technology development
which evolves from simple to more complicated structures and from static
to transient phenomena. The citation network is further separated into
groups using the Girvan-Newman edge-betweenness clustering method, which
successfully identifies ten groups of articles with strong internal
coherence. These groups can be regarded as the research fronts of the

Abstract:
Women and African Americans-groups targeted by negative stereotypes
about their intellectual abilities-may be underrepresented in careers
that prize brilliance and genius. A recent nationwide survey of
academics provided initial support for this possibility. Fields whose
practitioners believed that natural talent is crucial for success had
fewer female and African American PhDs. The present study seeks to
replicate this initial finding with a different, and arguably more
naturalistic, measure of the extent to which brilliance and genius are
prized within a field. Specifically, we measured field-by-field
variability in the emphasis on these intellectual qualities by
tallying-with the use of a recently released online tool-the frequency
of the words "brilliant" and "genius" in over 14 million reviews on
RateMyProfessors.com, a popular website where students can write
anonymous evaluations of their instructors. This simple word count
predicted both women's and African Americans' representation across the
academic spectrum. That is, we found that fields in which the words
"brilliant" and "genius" were used more frequently on RateMyProfessors.
com also had fewer female and African American PhDs. Looking at an
earlier stage in students' educational careers, we found that
brilliance-focused fields also had fewer women and African Americans
obtaining bachelor's degrees. These relationships held even when
accounting for field-specific averages on standardized mathematics
assessments, as well as several competing hypotheses concerning group
differences in representation. The fact that this naturalistic measure
of a field's focus on brilliance predicted the magnitude of its gender
and race gaps speaks to the tight link between ability beliefs and
diversity.

Title:
How to Rank Journals

Abstract:
There are now many methods available to assess the relative citation
performance of peer-reviewed journals. Regardless of their individual
faults and advantages, citation-based metrics are used by researchers to
maximize the citation potential of their articles, and by employers to
rank academic track records. The absolute value of any particular index
is arguably meaningless unless compared to other journals, and different
metrics result in divergent rankings. To provide a simple yet more
objective way to rank journals within and among disciplines, we
developed a kappa-resampled composite journal rank incorporating five
popular citation indices: Impact Factor, Immediacy Index,
Source-Normalized Impact Per Paper, SCImago Journal Rank and Google
5-year h-index; this approach provides an index of relative rank
uncertainty. We applied the approach to six sample sets of scientific
journals from Ecology (n = 100 journals), Medicine (n = 100),
Multidisciplinary (n = 50); Ecology + Multidisciplinary (n = 25),
Obstetrics & Gynaecology (n = 25) and Marine Biology & Fisheries (n =
25). We then cross-compared the kappa-resampled ranking for the Ecology
+ Multidisciplinary journal set to the results of a survey of 188
publishing ecologists who were asked to rank the same journals, and
found a 0.68-0.84 Spearman's. correlation between the two rankings
datasets. Our composite index approach therefore approximates relative
journal reputation, at least for that discipline. Agglomerative and
divisive clustering and multidimensional scaling techniques applied to
the Ecology + Multidisciplinary journal set identified specific clusters
of similarly ranked journals, with only Nature & Science separating out
from the others. When comparing a selection of journals within or among
disciplines, we recommend collecting multiple citation-based metrics for
a sample of relevant and realistic journals to calculate the composite
rankings and their relative uncertainty windows.

Abstract:
H-index is the most commonly applied tool to evaluate scientific
productivity. In this study, the use of the H-index to evaluate
scientific production in swine veterinary medicine was explored. A
database of 137 pig infectious agents was constructed, including its
taxonomic division, zoonotic potential, status as emerging pathogen and
whether it was OIE-listed. The H-index and the total number of citations
were calculated for those pathogens, the location of the affiliation of
the first author of each paper included in the H-index core was
registered and, for the ten pathogens with the highest H-index,
evolution over time was measured. H-index values were compared to the M
quotient, A-index, G-index, HG-index and the G/H ratio. H-indices were
found to be severely affected by search accuracy and the database was
hand curated. Swine pathogen H-indexes were highly dispersed ranging
from 0 to 106 and were generally higher for pathogens causing endemic
diseases in large pig producing countries. Indeed, the three top
pathogens were Escherichia coli, Porcine reproductive and respiratory
syndrome virus and Porcine circovirus type 2 with H-indices 106, 95 and
85, respectively. H-indices of viruses and bacteria were significantly
higher (P<0.001) than other pathogen types. Also, non-zoonotic pathogens
had higher H-indices than zoonotic pathogens (p<0.009) while no
differences could be found for being listed by the OIE. For emerging
diseases, only non-emerging viruses had higher H-index (p=0.02). The
study of H-indexes over time revealed three general patterns and that
they had increased mainly after the 1980's. As expected, there were
strong geographic patterns in terms of authorship and North America
(38%) and Europe (46%) coped the majority of the papers. Finally, in
order to quantify the contribution of a subject to a specific field, a
new index "Deciphering Citations Organized by Subject" (Dcos) is
proposed.

Abstract:
A characterization of the journal Investigacion Economica (Economic
Research) is performed as a result of a bibliometric analysis, where the
universe of study is composed by its publications available in redalyc.
org (199 scientific papers of the period 2005-2014). In addition, the
analysis includes indicators (based on production, collaboration and
usage; also proposed by that database) that conform an alternative and
complementary way to analyze written science. The conclusion shows that
this journal is a reference to internationalization and visibility in
economics, given the strong presence of foreign publications, whose
performance drives two effects: the increased collaboration among
researchers and the international papers download. However, this effort
should result in citations to the journal, where there is a pending
issue and diverse areas of opportunity and strengthening.

Abstract:
Extreme value theory (EVT) asserts that the Frechet law emerges
universally from linearly scaled maxima of collections of independent
and identically distributed random variables that are positive-valued.
Observations of many real-world sizes, e.g. city-sizes, give rise to the
Zipf law: if we rank the sizes decreasingly, and plot the log-sizes
versus the log-ranks, then an affine line emerges. In this paper we
present an EVT approach to the Zipf law. Specifically, we establish that
whenever the Frechet law emerges from the EVT setting, then the Zipf law
follows. The EVT generation of the Zipf law, its universality, and its
associated phase transition, are analyzed and described in detail.

Abstract:
Objectives: To investigate the current prevalence of open access (OA) in
the field of dentistry, the means used to provide OA, as well as the
association between OA and citation counts.
Methods: PubMed was searched for dental articles published in 2013. The
OA status of each article was determined by manually checking Google,
Google Scholar, PubMed and ResearchGate. Citation data were extracted
from Google Scholar, Scopus and Web of Science. Chi-square tests were
used to compare the OA prevalence by different subjects, study types,
and continents of origin. The association between OA and citation count
was studied with multivariable logistic regression analyses.
Results: A random sample of 908 articles was deemed eligible and
therefore included. Among these, 416 were found freely available online,
indicating an overall OA rate of 45.8%. Significant difference in OA
rate was detected among articles in different subjects (P < 0.001) and
among those from different continents (P < 0.001). Of articles that were
OA, 74.2% were available via self-archiving (`Green road' OA), 53.3%
were available from publishers (`Gold road' OA). According to
multivariable logistic regression analyses, OA status was not
significantly associated with either the existence of citation (P =
0.37) or the level of citation (P = 0.52).
Conclusions/clinical significance: In the field of dentistry, 54% of
recent journal articles are behind the paywall (non-OA) one year after
their publication dates. The `Green road' of providing OA was more
common than the `Gold road'. No evidence suggested that OA articles
received significantly more citations than non-OA articles. (C) 2016

Abstract:
This work carries out a comprehensive and systematic review of academic
research on entrepreneurship in family firms applying bibliometric
indicators. We review the literature published on these topics on the
database ISI Web of Knowledge's Social Sciences Citation Index. The
results provided show that it is a relatively recent field of study,
highly interconnected with high co-citation between authors, which
verifies compliance with Lotka's Law, and where the most productive
authors and journals do not necessarily coincide with those most cited.
Finally, the co-word analysis has identified research topics classified
into widely developed issues and specialized peripheral issues.

Abstract:
The objectives of this bibliometric analysis of the scientific
literature were to describe the research subjects and the international
collaborations in the field of research on infectious diseases in
livestock animals including fishes and honeybees. It was based on
articles published worldwide from 2006 through 2013. The source of data
was the Web of Science, Core collection (R) and only papers fully
written in English were considered. Queries were built that combined 130
descriptors related to animal species and 1213 descriptors related to
diseases and pathogens. To refine and assess the accuracy of the
extracted database, supplementary filters were applied to discard
non-specific terms and neighbouring topics, and numerous tests were
carried out on samples. For pathogens, annotation was done using a
thematic terminology established to link each disease with its
corresponding pathogen, which was in turn classified according to its
family. A total of 62 754 articles were published in this field during
this 8-year period. The average annual growth rate of the number of
papers was 5%. This represents the reference data to which we compared
the average annual growth rate of articles produced in each of the
sub-categories that we defined. Thirty-seven percent of the papers were
dedicated to ruminant diseases. Poultry, pigs and fishes were covered by
respectively 21, 13 and 14% of the total. Thirty-seven percent of papers
concerned bacteria, 33% viruses, 19% parasites, 2% prions, the remaining
being multi-pathogens. Research on virology, especially on pigs and
poultry, is increasing faster than the average. There also is increasing
interest in monogastric species, fish and bees. The average annual
growth rate for Asia was 10%, which is high compared to 3% for Europe
and 2% for the Americas, indicating that Asia is currently playing a
leading role in this field. There is a well established network of
international collaborations. For 75% of the papers, the co-authors were
from the same country, for 10%, they were from different countries on
the same continent, and for 15%, they were from different continents.
The annual growth rate of papers representing international
collaborations generally is increasing more quickly than the overall
average.

Abstract:
The spatial distribution of people exhibits clustering across a wide
range of scales, from household (similar to 10(-2) km) to continental
(similar to 10(4) km) scales. Empirical data indicate simple power-law
scalings for the size distribution of cities (known as Zipf's law) and
the population density fluctuations as a function of scale. Using
techniques from random field theory and statistical physics, we show
that these power laws are fundamentally a consequence of the scale-free
spatial clustering of human populations and the fact that humans inhabit
a two-dimensional surface. In this sense, the symmetries of scale
invariance in two spatial dimensions are intimately connected to urban
sociology. We test our theory by empirically measuring the power
spectrum of population density fluctuations and show that the
logarithmic slope alpha = 2.04 +/- 0.09, in excellent agreement with our
theoretical prediction alpha = 2. The model enables the analytic
computation of many new predictions by importing the mathematical
formalism of random fields.

Abstract:
Study objective: Academic medical researchers are judged by how often
their publications are cited in the literature. When serving as journal
reviewers, they may be more favorably disposed to manuscripts that cite
their work. We investigate whether manuscripts that contain a citation
to the reviewer's work receive higher evaluations than those that do not
and whether peer reviewers encourage authors to cite that reviewer's
work.
Methods: We analyzed all research manuscripts submitted in 2012 to
Annals of Emergency Medicine to determine whether they contained
citations to each reviewer's work. To determine whether citation
affected reviewer scores, we obtained each reviewer's score of the
manuscript's overall desirability (1=worst to 5=best) and used
descriptive statistics and regression modeling to compare scores of
cited and noncited reviewers. We also enumerated how often reviewers
suggested that authors add citations to the reviewer's work or other
work.
Results: There were 395 manuscripts and 999 corresponding reviews with
an manuscript desirability score. The 83 reviews by cited reviewers
(8.3%) had a mean score of 2.8 (SD 1.4); the 916 reviews by noncited
reviewers (91.7%), 2.5 (1.2; Delta=0.3; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0
to 0.6). The mean score in the 117 reviews of the noncited reviewers of
the 57 manuscripts that had both cited and noncited reviewers was 2.9
(SD 1.2) compared with 2.9 (SD 1.1) for the 68 reviews by cited
reviewers (Delta=0; 95% CI -0.3 to 0.4). In the final ordinal regression
model, the unadjusted OR for the manuscript desirability score was 1.6
(95% CI 1.0 to 2.7); when adjusting for the manuscripts' mean
desirability score, it was 1.4 (95% CI 0.8 to 2.2), demonstrating that
manuscript quality was a confounder. Authors were asked to add a
citation to the reviewer's work in 28 reviews (3%) but to others' work
in 98 (10%).
Conclusion: In a leading specialty journal, cited reviewers gave higher
scores than noncited reviewers. However, this was likely due to their
being assigned higher-quality manuscripts and not because they were
cited in the manuscript. Reviewer requests that their work be cited were
rare.
