INTRODUCTION Digital libraries that store scientific publications are becoming increasingly central to the research process. They are not only used for traditional tasks, such as finding and storing research outputs, but also as a source for discovering new research trends or evaluating research excellence. With the current growth of scientific publications deposited in digital libraries, it is no longer sufficient to provide only access to content. To aid research, it is especially important to leverage the potential of text and data mining technologies to improve the process of how research is being done. This workshop aims to bring together people from different backgrounds who: (a) are interested in analysing and mining databases of scientific publications (b) develop systems that enable such analysis and mining of scientific databases (especially those who run databases of publications) (c) who develop novel technologies that improve the way research is being done. 2. TOPICS The topics of the workshop will be organised around the following themes: 1. The whole ecosystem of infrastructures including repositories, aggregators, text-and data-mining facilities, impact monitoring tools, datasets, services and APIs that enable analysis of large volumes of scientific publications. 2. The Impact Fallacy; preprint version Message-ID: <002b01d18cb4$a03a1ce0$e0ae56a0$@leydesdorff.net> Citations: Indicators of Quality? The Impact Fallacy We argue that citation is a composed indicator: short-term citations can be considered as currency at the research front, whereas long-term citations can contribute to the codification of knowledge claims into concept symbols. Knowledge claims at the research front are more likely to be transitory and are therefore problematic as indicators of quality. Citation impact studies focus on short-term citation, and therefore tend to measure not epistemic quality, but involvement in current discourses in which contributions are positioned by referencing. We explore this argument using three case studies: (1) citations of the journal Soziale Welt as an example of a venue that tends not to publish papers at a research front, unlike, for example, JACS; (2) Robert Merton as a concept symbol across theories of citation; and (3) the Multi-RPYS ("Multi-Referenced Publication Year Spectroscopy") of the journals Scientometrics, Gene, and Soziale Welt. We show empirically that the measurement of "quality" in terms of citations can further be qualified: short-term citation currency at the research front can be distinguished from longer-term processes of incorporation and codification of knowledge claims into bodies of knowledge. The recently introduced Multi-RPYS can be used to distinguish between short-term and long-term impacts. Call For Papers The 50th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS-50) Hilton Waikoloa Village, Big Island, Hawaii, January 4-7, 2017 ========================================================================== Deep Learning, Ubiquitous and Toy Computing Minitrack URL: http://www.hicss.org/#!deep-learning-ubiquitous-and-toy-comput/cwar The pervasive nature of digital technologies as witnessed in industry, services and everyday life has given rise to an emergent, data-focused economy stemming from many aspects of human individual and ubiquitous applications. The richness and vastness of these data are creating unprecedented research opportunities in a number of fields including urban studies, geography, economics, finance, entertainment, and social science, as well as physics, biology and genetics, public health and many other smart devices. In addition to data, text and machine mining research, businesses and policy makers have seized on deep learning technologies to support their decisions and proper growing smart application needs. As businesses build out emerging hardware and software infrastructure, it becomes increasingly important to anticipate technical and practical challenges and to identify best practices learned through experience in this research area. Deep learning employs software tools from advanced analytics disciplines such as data mining, predictive analytics, text and machine learning based on a set of algorithms that attempt to model high-level abstractions in data by using multiple processing layers with complex structures or non-linear transformations. At the same time, the processing and analysis of deep learning applications present methodological and technological challenges. Further deep learning applications are advantaged by a rise in sensing technologies as witnessed in both the number of sensors and the rich diversity of sensors ranging from cell phones, personal computers, and health tracking appliances to Internet of Things (IoT) technologies designed to give contextual, semantic data to entities in an ubiquitous environment that previously could not contribute intelligence to key decisions and smart devices. Recently deep learning technologies have been applied into toy computing. Toy computing is a recently developing concept which transcends the traditional toy into a new area of computer research using ubiquitous technologies. A toy in this context can be effectively considered a computing device or peripheral called Smart Toys. We invite research and industry papers related to these specific challenges and others that are driving innovation in deep learning, ubiquitous and toy computing. The goal of this minitrack is to present both novel and industrial solutions to challenging technical issues as well as compelling smart application use cases. This minitrack will share related practical experiences to benefit the reader, and will provide clear proof that deep learning technologies are playing an ever-increasing important and critical role in supporting ubiquitous and toy computing applications - a new cross-discipline research topic in computer science, decision science, and information systems. With a general focus on deep learning, ubiquitous and toy computing, this minitrack covers related topics in deep learning, ubiquitous and toy computing such as: * Data Modeling and Implementation * Analytics and Algorithms * Business Models * Delivery, Deployment and Maintenance * Real-time Processing Technologies and Online Transactions * Conceptual and Technical Architecture * Visualization Technologies * Modeling and Implementation * Security, Privacy and Trust * Industry Standards and Solution Stacks * Provenance Tracking Frameworks and Tools * Software Repositories * Organizations Best Practices * Smart Toys * Case Studies (e.g., smart toys, healthcare, financial, aviation, etc.) Extended versions of accepted papers will be invited for submission by specific journal special issues. Further details will be announced soon. Source: ECONOMIC INQUIRY, 54 (2):1339-1355; 10.1111/ecin.12292 APR 2016 Language: English Document Type: Article KeyWords Plus: CITATION ANALYSIS; GOOGLE SCHOLAR; IMPACT FACTORS; SCIENCE; JOURNALS; INDEX; DEPARTMENTS; RANKINGS; COVERAGE; SALARIES Abstract: Does the life cycle of economic papers differ across fields of economic research? By constructing and analyzing a large dataset that combines information on 9,672 articles published in the top five economic journals from 1970 to 2000 with detailed yearly citation data obtained from Google Scholar, we find that published articles do have a life cycle that differs across fields of economic research (which we divide into the categories of applied, applied theory, econometric methods, and theory). Applied and applied theory papers are the clear winners in terms of citation counts. For the first years after their publication, they receive higher numbers of citations per year than papers in other fields of research do. They also reach a higher peak number of citations per year and apparently sustain those peak levels for longer, in addition to being cited over longer periods of time (i.e., they have a longer lifespan). Citation patterns are much less favorable for theoretical papers, which are the object of fewer citations per annum in the first years following publication, have lower peak numbers and a shorter lifespan. Econometric method papers are a special case; the pattern for most of these papers is similar to the pattern for theory papers, but the most successful papers (as measured by the number of citations) on econometric methods are also the most successful papers in the entire discipline of economics. The problem is modeled as an imbalanced data classification task where the cost of misclassifying the minority class is higher than the cost of misclassifying the majority class. This work introduces a novel method for representing systematic reviews based not only on lexical features, but also utilizing word clustering and citation features. This novel representation is shown to outperform previously used features in representing systematic reviews, regardless of the classifier. Our work utilizes a random forest classifier with the novel features to accurately predict included studies with high recall. The parameters of the random forest are automatically configured using heuristics methods thus allowing us to provide a product that is usable in real scenarios. Experiments on a dataset containing 15 systematic reviews that were prepared by health care professionals show that our approach can achieve high recall while helping the SR author save time. We examine both the relation between size and performance and also how performance for CoEs evolves over the course of grant periods. In terms of dynamics, it appears that performance over the grant period (i.e. 10 years) is falling for the largest CoEs, while it is increasing for those among the smallest half. Overall, multivariate econometric analysis finds evidence that performance is increasing in grant size and over time. In both cases, the relation appears to be non/linear, suggesting that there is a point at which performance peaks. The CoEs have also been very successful in securing additional funding, which can be viewed as a 'cumulative effect' of center grants. In terms of new personnel, the far majority of additional funding is spent on early career researchers, hence, this accumulation would appear to have a 'generational' dimension, allowing for scientific expertise to be passed on to an increasing number of younger researchers. Although the applications of the technology have already been on the market for several years, efforts to improve its performance, cost, and stability continues. There have been around 500 PEMFC research articles published every year recently. As the first step of a longer term effort to systematically detecting technological changes, this study selects PEMFC as the target technology to visualize its technological development and uncovers its recent research fronts. We collect PEMFC research articles from the Web of Science database and establish a citation network using the associated citation information. Main PEMFC development paths are uncovered through key-route main path analysis. The main path results show that modeling is the main focus of PEMFC technology development which evolves from simple to more complicated structures and from static to transient phenomena. The citation network is further separated into groups using the Girvan-Newman edge-betweenness clustering method, which successfully identifies ten groups of articles with strong internal coherence. These groups can be regarded as the research fronts of the technology. Reprint Address: Liu, JS (reprint author), Natl Taiwan Univ Sci & Technol, Taipei, Taiwan. A recent nationwide survey of academics provided initial support for this possibility. Fields whose practitioners believed that natural talent is crucial for success had fewer female and African American PhDs. The present study seeks to replicate this initial finding with a different, and arguably more naturalistic, measure of the extent to which brilliance and genius are prized within a field. Specifically, we measured field-by-field variability in the emphasis on these intellectual qualities by tallying-with the use of a recently released online tool-the frequency of the words "brilliant" and "genius" in over 14 million reviews on RateMyProfessors.com, a popular website where students can write anonymous evaluations of their instructors. This simple word count predicted both women's and African Americans' representation across the academic spectrum. That is, we found that fields in which the words "brilliant" and "genius" were used more frequently on RateMyProfessors. com also had fewer female and African American PhDs. Looking at an earlier stage in students' educational careers, we found that brilliance-focused fields also had fewer women and African Americans obtaining bachelor's degrees. These relationships held even when accounting for field-specific averages on standardized mathematics assessments, as well as several competing hypotheses concerning group differences in representation. The fact that this naturalistic measure of a field's focus on brilliance predicted the magnitude of its gender and race gaps speaks to the tight link between ability beliefs and diversity. A.; Brook, Barry W. Source: PLOS ONE, 11 (3):10.1371/journal.pone.0149852 MAR 1 2016 Language: English Document Type: Article KeyWords Plus: IMPACT FACTOR; H-INDEX; GOOGLE SCHOLAR; FIELDS; CONS; PROS; INDICATOR; QUALITY; METRICS; SCIENCE Abstract: There are now many methods available to assess the relative citation performance of peer-reviewed journals. Regardless of their individual faults and advantages, citation-based metrics are used by researchers to maximize the citation potential of their articles, and by employers to rank academic track records. The absolute value of any particular index is arguably meaningless unless compared to other journals, and different metrics result in divergent rankings. To provide a simple yet more objective way to rank journals within and among disciplines, we developed a kappa-resampled composite journal rank incorporating five popular citation indices: Impact Factor, Immediacy Index, Source-Normalized Impact Per Paper, SCImago Journal Rank and Google 5-year h-index; this approach provides an index of relative rank uncertainty. We applied the approach to six sample sets of scientific journals from Ecology (n = 100 journals), Medicine (n = 100), Multidisciplinary (n = 50); Ecology + Multidisciplinary (n = 25), Obstetrics & Gynaecology (n = 25) and Marine Biology & Fisheries (n = 25). We then cross-compared the kappa-resampled ranking for the Ecology + Multidisciplinary journal set to the results of a survey of 188 publishing ecologists who were asked to rank the same journals, and found a 0.68-0.84 Spearman's. correlation between the two rankings datasets. Our composite index approach therefore approximates relative journal reputation, at least for that discipline. Agglomerative and divisive clustering and multidimensional scaling techniques applied to the Ecology + Multidisciplinary journal set identified specific clusters of similarly ranked journals, with only Nature & Science separating out from the others. When comparing a selection of journals within or among disciplines, we recommend collecting multiple citation-based metrics for a sample of relevant and realistic journals to calculate the composite rankings and their relative uncertainty windows. In this study, the use of the H-index to evaluate scientific production in swine veterinary medicine was explored. A database of 137 pig infectious agents was constructed, including its taxonomic division, zoonotic potential, status as emerging pathogen and whether it was OIE-listed. The H-index and the total number of citations were calculated for those pathogens, the location of the affiliation of the first author of each paper included in the H-index core was registered and, for the ten pathogens with the highest H-index, evolution over time was measured. H-index values were compared to the M quotient, A-index, G-index, HG-index and the G/H ratio. H-indices were found to be severely affected by search accuracy and the database was hand curated. Swine pathogen H-indexes were highly dispersed ranging from 0 to 106 and were generally higher for pathogens causing endemic diseases in large pig producing countries. Indeed, the three top pathogens were Escherichia coli, Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus and Porcine circovirus type 2 with H-indices 106, 95 and 85, respectively. H-indices of viruses and bacteria were significantly higher (P<0.001) than other pathogen types. Also, non-zoonotic pathogens had higher H-indices than zoonotic pathogens (p<0.009) while no differences could be found for being listed by the OIE. For emerging diseases, only non-emerging viruses had higher H-index (p=0.02). The study of H-indexes over time revealed three general patterns and that they had increased mainly after the 1980's. As expected, there were strong geographic patterns in terms of authorship and North America (38%) and Europe (46%) coped the majority of the papers. Finally, in order to quantify the contribution of a subject to a specific field, a new index "Deciphering Citations Organized by Subject" (Dcos) is proposed. ORG, 2005-2014 Authors: Lopez, EA; Garcia, AB Author Full Names: Aguado Lopez, Eduardo; Becerril Garcia, Arianna Source: INVESTIGACION ECONOMICA, 75 (295):3-29; JAN-MAR 2016 Language: Spanish Document Type: Article Author Keywords: bibliometric analysis, Economic Research, Economics, collaboration, redalyc.org Abstract: A characterization of the journal Investigacion Economica (Economic Research) is performed as a result of a bibliometric analysis, where the universe of study is composed by its publications available in redalyc. org (199 scientific papers of the period 2005-2014). In addition, the analysis includes indicators (based on production, collaboration and usage; also proposed by that database) that conform an alternative and complementary way to analyze written science. The conclusion shows that this journal is a reference to internationalization and visibility in economics, given the strong presence of foreign publications, whose performance drives two effects: the increased collaboration among researchers and the international papers download. However, this effort should result in citations to the journal, where there is a pending issue and diverse areas of opportunity and strengthening. Observations of many real-world sizes, e.g. city-sizes, give rise to the Zipf law: if we rank the sizes decreasingly, and plot the log-sizes versus the log-ranks, then an affine line emerges. In this paper we present an EVT approach to the Zipf law. Specifically, we establish that whenever the Frechet law emerges from the EVT setting, then the Zipf law follows. The EVT generation of the Zipf law, its universality, and its associated phase transition, are analyzed and described in detail. Methods: PubMed was searched for dental articles published in 2013. The OA status of each article was determined by manually checking Google, Google Scholar, PubMed and ResearchGate. Citation data were extracted from Google Scholar, Scopus and Web of Science. Chi-square tests were used to compare the OA prevalence by different subjects, study types, and continents of origin. The association between OA and citation count was studied with multivariable logistic regression analyses. Results: A random sample of 908 articles was deemed eligible and therefore included. Among these, 416 were found freely available online, indicating an overall OA rate of 45.8%. Significant difference in OA rate was detected among articles in different subjects (P < 0.001) and among those from different continents (P < 0.001). Of articles that were OA, 74.2% were available via self-archiving (`Green road' OA), 53.3% were available from publishers (`Gold road' OA). According to multivariable logistic regression analyses, OA status was not significantly associated with either the existence of citation (P = 0.37) or the level of citation (P = 0.52). Conclusions/clinical significance: In the field of dentistry, 54% of recent journal articles are behind the paywall (non-OA) one year after their publication dates. The `Green road' of providing OA was more common than the `Gold road'. No evidence suggested that OA articles received significantly more citations than non-OA articles. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. We review the literature published on these topics on the database ISI Web of Knowledge's Social Sciences Citation Index. The results provided show that it is a relatively recent field of study, highly interconnected with high co-citation between authors, which verifies compliance with Lotka's Law, and where the most productive authors and journals do not necessarily coincide with those most cited. Finally, the co-word analysis has identified research topics classified into widely developed issues and specialized peripheral issues. It was based on articles published worldwide from 2006 through 2013. The source of data was the Web of Science, Core collection (R) and only papers fully written in English were considered. Queries were built that combined 130 descriptors related to animal species and 1213 descriptors related to diseases and pathogens. To refine and assess the accuracy of the extracted database, supplementary filters were applied to discard non-specific terms and neighbouring topics, and numerous tests were carried out on samples. For pathogens, annotation was done using a thematic terminology established to link each disease with its corresponding pathogen, which was in turn classified according to its family. A total of 62 754 articles were published in this field during this 8-year period. The average annual growth rate of the number of papers was 5%. This represents the reference data to which we compared the average annual growth rate of articles produced in each of the sub-categories that we defined. Thirty-seven percent of the papers were dedicated to ruminant diseases. Poultry, pigs and fishes were covered by respectively 21, 13 and 14% of the total. Thirty-seven percent of papers concerned bacteria, 33% viruses, 19% parasites, 2% prions, the remaining being multi-pathogens. Research on virology, especially on pigs and poultry, is increasing faster than the average. There also is increasing interest in monogastric species, fish and bees. The average annual growth rate for Asia was 10%, which is high compared to 3% for Europe and 2% for the Americas, indicating that Asia is currently playing a leading role in this field. There is a well established network of international collaborations. For 75% of the papers, the co-authors were from the same country, for 10%, they were from different countries on the same continent, and for 15%, they were from different continents. The annual growth rate of papers representing international collaborations generally is increasing more quickly than the overall average. Empirical data indicate simple power-law scalings for the size distribution of cities (known as Zipf's law) and the population density fluctuations as a function of scale. Using techniques from random field theory and statistical physics, we show that these power laws are fundamentally a consequence of the scale-free spatial clustering of human populations and the fact that humans inhabit a two-dimensional surface. In this sense, the symmetries of scale invariance in two spatial dimensions are intimately connected to urban sociology. We test our theory by empirically measuring the power spectrum of population density fluctuations and show that the logarithmic slope alpha = 2.04 +/- 0.09, in excellent agreement with our theoretical prediction alpha = 2. The model enables the analytic computation of many new predictions by importing the mathematical formalism of random fields. An Analysis of Submitted Manuscripts and Peer Reviewer Reports Authors: Schriger, DL; Kadera, SP; von Elm, E Author Full Names: Schriger, David L.; Kadera, Samantha P.; von Elm, Erik Source: ANNALS OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE, 67 (3):401-406; 10.1016/j.annemergmed.2015.09.003 MAR 2016 Language: English Document Type: Review KeyWords Plus: DEDICATED METHODOLOGY; SCIENCE Abstract: Study objective: Academic medical researchers are judged by how often their publications are cited in the literature. When serving as journal reviewers, they may be more favorably disposed to manuscripts that cite their work. We investigate whether manuscripts that contain a citation to the reviewer's work receive higher evaluations than those that do not and whether peer reviewers encourage authors to cite that reviewer's work. Methods: We analyzed all research manuscripts submitted in 2012 to Annals of Emergency Medicine to determine whether they contained citations to each reviewer's work. To determine whether citation affected reviewer scores, we obtained each reviewer's score of the manuscript's overall desirability (1=worst to 5=best) and used descriptive statistics and regression modeling to compare scores of cited and noncited reviewers. We also enumerated how often reviewers suggested that authors add citations to the reviewer's work or other work. Results: There were 395 manuscripts and 999 corresponding reviews with an manuscript desirability score. The 83 reviews by cited reviewers (8.3%) had a mean score of 2.8 (SD 1.4); the 916 reviews by noncited reviewers (91.7%), 2.5 (1.2; Delta=0.3; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0 to 0.6). The mean score in the 117 reviews of the noncited reviewers of the 57 manuscripts that had both cited and noncited reviewers was 2.9 (SD 1.2) compared with 2.9 (SD 1.1) for the 68 reviews by cited reviewers (Delta=0; 95% CI -0.3 to 0.4). In the final ordinal regression model, the unadjusted OR for the manuscript desirability score was 1.6 (95% CI 1.0 to 2.7); when adjusting for the manuscripts' mean desirability score, it was 1.4 (95% CI 0.8 to 2.2), demonstrating that manuscript quality was a confounder. Authors were asked to add a citation to the reviewer's work in 28 reviews (3%) but to others' work in 98 (10%). Conclusion: In a leading specialty journal, cited reviewers gave higher scores than noncited reviewers. However, this was likely due to their being assigned higher-quality manuscripts and not because they were cited in the manuscript. Reviewer requests that their work be cited were rare. The latest issue of *Publications: the journal of academic publishing and communication* certainly does that with a couple of articles. And remember, they are all OA, and I give the links so you can go straight there and read them if you wish. First up we have a review of the literature - what's it about and who's writing it (using Scopus as source). You will be shocked to know that the USA is the most prolific country, with over 30% of articles and UK trailing behind with about 13.4%. All other countries are, a bit, also-rans. No prizes for guessing the most prolific author - If I tell you his first name is Bo-Christer?... Steven Harnad comes in fourth. *http://www.mdpi.com/2304-6775/4/1/1/htm* And then we have an article looking more at content, at least as far as the Health Sciences are concerned, tracking what evidence has been found, and in what direction. Although most articles nowadays seem to start from the premise that OA is necessarily 'a good thing', and these are no exception, in the body of the article it is careful to point out where evidence is also either weak or contradictory. On citation impact, for example, it rather assumes OA is positive but points also to the caveats and studies by such as Phil Davis et al. *http://www.mdpi.com/2304-6775/4/1/2/htm* *. * The history and rise of OA seems to have acquired its own mythology - since I was one of the people responsible for one of the very first substantial OA (not called that then) journals in the 1990s, and founded for very different reasons, it's all mildly amusing, but we have to live with it... There is another pair of articles looking at Non-Native English Speakers publishing in English. As someone who has now edited or 'polished' getting on for 200 articles in English by Chinese researchers, I read these with interest. One is really based on a set of case studies, charting in detail the trials and tribulations of such researchers as they work their way through, and trying to draw some conclusions. Interestingly, he raises how some are questioning the fairness of these systems 'requiring' English/American English and wanting to 'uncouple' the language from its native speakers, and talking, without irony, about the 'transformationalist framework' of that particular school of thought. *http://www.mdpi.com/2304-6775/4/1/6/htm* *, * *http://www.mdpi.com/2304-6775/4/1/5/htm* *. *These days all major publishers will at least refer non-native speakers to places where they can get help. More may be needed, however, and James Cameron and Karen Englander, based partly on their own experience, make a call for more properly organised courses within universities, and outline the one in Mexico as an example. Given my own experience, I feel an editorial coming on... By the way, I do have an editorial in this issue, on a couple of aspects of one of my hobby-horses - peer review. *http://www.mdpi.com/2304-6775/4/1/8/htm* *. *For some reason it's not at the top of the contents list - as a new boy here I'll have to have a word with the publishers about that. We also have a bibliometric analysis of how co-authorship and exposure to 'international' journals e.g. those from USA and UK, can greatly assist visibility to authors from devloping countries, in this case, specifically, Brazil - which may have wider implications for many other other countries. *http://www.mdpi.com/2304-6775/4/1/4/htm* *. *Lastly, we have a piece which at first sight is less about academic publishing than creative writing - but it's interesting to see whether there is any crossover. This explores what it calls 'implicit collaboration' or 'appropriation' in the context of the Creative Commons licence. It recognises that in some fields this would be considered 'plagiarism' but explores how creative works use and build on the works of others, sometimes with full acceptance, and sometimes controversially. It makes interesting and thought-provoking reading - although I'm left with the feeling that, in science, it's fine for someone to 'stand on the shoulders of giants' but it's not ok for them to falsely pretend to actually *be *that giant.. *http://www.mdpi.com/2304-6775/4/1/7/htm* *. *That's all for now. Hope you enjoy at least browsing the articles. Hope to see you again in a few months. The best known system is the so-called "Web-of-Science Subject Categories" (WCs). Each system has its own advantages and disadvantages. Using the Journal Citation Reports 2014 of the Science Citation Index and the Social Science Citation Index (n of journals = 11,149), we examine the options for developing an unambiguous classification of the journals into subject categories on the basis of aggregated journal-journal citation data. Combining routines in VOSviewer and Pajek, a tree-like classification is developed which can be reproduced unambiguously. At each level one can generate a map of science for all the journals subsumed under the category. Nine major fields are distinguished at the top level, with the social sciences as a single field (n of journals = 3,131). In this study, further decomposition of the social sciences is pursued for the sake of example with a focus on journals in information science (LIS) and science studies (STS). The classification improves alternative options by removing subjective judgement and avoiding the problem of randomness in the seed number that has made algorithmic solutions hitherto irreproducible. A non-subjective map and classification can provide a baseline for measuring the effectiveness of policy interventions. Maps can be compared between years, and change in the (social) sciences can be indicated. The past BIR and NLPIR4DL organizers are proposing this workshop at JCDL together. In conjunction with the workshop, we will hold the 2nd CL-SciSumm Shared Task in Scientific Document Summarization. Reports from the shared task systems will be featured as part of a session at the workshop. === Important Dates === - Submissions: 25 April 2016 (extended) - Notification: 16 May 2016 - Camera Ready Contributions: 09 June 2016 - Workshop: 23 June 2016 in Newark, New Jersey, USA === Aim of the Workshop === Current digital libraries collect and allow access to digital papers and their metadata (including citations), but mostly do not analyze the items they index. The large scale of scholarly publications poses a challenge for scholars in their search for relevant literature. Searchers of digital libraries, citation indices and journal databases are inundated with thousands of results. The community needs to develop techniques to better support both basic as well as higher-order information seeking and scholarly sensemaking activities. The BIRNDL 2016 workshop is a joint scientific event gathering scholars from the BIR (Bibliometric-enhanced Information Retrieval) and the NLPIR4DL (Text and citation analysis for scholarly digital libraries) communities. The scope of BIRNDL is on scholarly publications and data - the explosion in the production of scientific literature and the growth of scientific enterprise; its consistent exponential growth approaches an empirical law. The workshop will investigate how natural language processing, information retrieval, scientometric and recommendation techniques can advance the state-of-the-art in scholarly document understanding, analysis and retrieval at scale. Researchers are in need of assistive technologies to track developments in an area, identify the approaches used to solve a research problem over time and summarize research trends. Digital libraries require semantic search, question-answering and automated recommendation and reviewing systems to manage and retrieve answers from scholarly databases. Full document text analysis can help to design semantic search, translation and summarization systems; citation and social network analyses can help digital libraries to visualize scientific trends, bibliometrics and relationships and influences of works and authors. All these approaches can be supplemented with the metadata supplied by digital libraries, inclusive of usage data, such as download counts. This workshop will be relevant to scholars in the cross-disciplinary field of Computer Science and Digital Libraries, in particular in the research areas of Natural Language Processing and in Information Retrieval; it will also be important for all stakeholders in the publication pipeline: implementers, publishers and policymakers. Even when only considering the scholarly sites within Computer Science, we find that the field is well-represented - ACM Portal, IEEE Xplore, Google Scholar, PSU's CiteSeerX, MSR's Academic Search, Elsevier's Mendeley, Tsinghua's ArnetMiner, Trier's DBLP, Hiroshima's PRESRI; with this workshop we hope to bring a number of these contributors together. Today's publishers continue to seek new ways to be relevant to their consumers, in disseminating the right published works to their audience. The fact that formal citation metrics have become an increasingly large factor in decision-making by universities and funding bodies worldwide makes the need for research in such topics and for better methods for measuring the impact of work more pressing. This workshop is also informed by an ongoing COST Action TD1210 KnowEscape. http://www.knowescape.org === Workshop Topics === To support the previously described goals the workshop topics include (but are not limited to) the following: - Information retrieval (IR) for digital libraries and scientific information portals - IR for scholarly text, e.g. citation-based IR - IR for scientific domains, e.g. social sciences, life sciences etc. - Information Seeking Behaviour - Navigation, searching and browsing in scholarly DLs; Niche search in scholarly DLs; New information access methods for scientific papers - Query expansion and relevance feedback approaches - Question-answering for scholarly DLs - Recommendations based on explicit and implicit user feedback - Recommendation for scholarly papers, reviewers, citations and publication venues - (Social) Book Search - Summarisation of scientific articles; Automatic creation of reviews and automatic qualitative assessment of submissions; - Bibliometrics, citation analysis and network analysis for IR; Citation function/motivation analysis; Novel bibliographic metrics; Topical modeling analysis - Knowledge discovery and analysis of the ancestry of ideas - Metadata and controlled vocabularies for resource description and discovery; Automatic metadata discovery, such as language identification - Translation, multilingual and multimedia analysis and alignment of scholarly works - Analyses of writing style in scholarly publications - Science Modelling (both formal and empirical) - Task based user modelling, interaction, and personalisation - (Long-term) Evaluation methods and test collection design - Collaborative information handling and information sharing - Disambiguation issues in scholarly DLs using NLP or IR techniques; Data cleaning and data quality - Classification, categorisation and clustering approaches - Information extraction (including topic detection, entity and relation extraction) For the paper sessions we invite descriptions of running projects and ongoing work as well as contributions from industry. Papers that investigate multiple themes directly are especially welcome. === Submission Details === All submissions must be written in English following Springer LNCS author guidelines (max. 6 pages for short and 12 pages for full papers, Springer LNCS: ; exclusive of unlimited pages for references) and should be submitted as PDF files to EasyChair. All submissions will be reviewed by at least two independent reviewers. Please be aware of the fact that at least one author per paper needs to register for the workshop and attend the workshop to present the work. In case of no-show the paper (even if accepted) will be deleted from the proceedings and from the program. EasyChair: Workshop proceedings will be deposited online in the CEUR workshop proceedings publication service (ISSN 1613-0073) and in the ACL Anthology. This way the proceedings will be permanently available and citable (digital persistent identifiers and long term preservation). Planned IJDL Special Issue: We are currently working with the International Journal on Digital Libraries (IJDL) to edit a special issue that may feature extended works from BIRNDL. Selected workshop papers from BIRNDL may be fast-tracked for extension shortly after the workshop, and be re-reviewed for publication. IJDL is a Springer journal and indexed in SCOPUS, INSPEC, ACM Digital Library, DBLP, and other indices. === Organizers === Guillaume Cabanac, University of Toulouse, France Muthu Kumar Chandrasekaran, School of Computing, National University of Singapore, Singapore Ingo Frommholz, University of Bedfordshire in Luton, UK Kokil Jaidka, Big Data Experience Lab, Adobe Research, India Min-Yen Kan, School of Computing, National University of Singapore, Singapore Philipp Mayr, GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences, Germany Dietmar Wolfram, School of Information Studies, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, USA === Program Committee === Akiko Aizawa, National Institute of Informatics, Japan Iana Atanassova, Universit? de Franche-Comt?, France Joeran Beel, University of Konstanz, Germany Patrice Bellot, Aix-Marseille University, France Marc Bertin, Universit? du Qu?bec ? This book analyzes and discusses the recent developments for measuring research quality in social sciences and the humanities. Research assessments in the humanities are highly controversial and the evaluation of humanities research is delicate. While citation-based research performance indicators are widely used in the natural and life sciences, quantitative measures for research performance meet strong opposition in the humanities. This volume combines the presentation of state-of-the-art projects on research assessments in the humanities by humanities scholars themselves with a description of the evaluation of humanities research in practice presented by research funders. Bibliometric issues concerning humanities research complete the exhaustive analysis of humanities research assessment. The selection of authors is well-balanced between humanities scholars, research funders, and researchers on higher education. Hence, the edited volume succeeds in painting a comprehensive picture of research evaluation in the humanities. This book is valuable to university and science policy makers, university administrators, research evaluators, bibliometricians as well as humanities scholars who seek expert knowledge in research evaluation in the humanities. You are right, you won?t find a definition of ?the humanities?. The book has not the goal to define what the humanities are and how they should be assessed in a top-down manner but to look into *bottom-up* procedures coming from disciplines or scholars that consider themselves as humanities scholars or disciplines. Hence the title. The bottom-up approach of this book is not compatible with a hard definition nor with a clear working definition of ?the humanities?. Furthermore, since evaluation practices and tools from many different countries are presented in the volume, it would be impossible to find a definition that holds for the traditions in all those countries. Of course, the disciplines covered in this book have some things in common, amongst many other things, they are usually not driven by a dominant paradigm but by a plurality of paradigms, they do not follow the notion of linear progress, they use books as an important means of dissemination, they use multiple and regional languages, and they are not covered adequately in the usual commercial citation and publication data bases (however, I would never call this a definition of humanities). By the way: the book is open access, you can read the introduction (or/and the abstract of each chapter) to get the general idea behind the book/chapters. I hope I could clarify. In the U.S., there is often a separation of fine arts from stuff like English and History (which at my university are considered the Humanities). I intend to assess Humanities & Social science OA journals in Nigeria, but can't place or identify/classify most of the Humanities OA journals, if at all available. Thanks for the OA book. Hope it'll give me more insight? Obinna.
