Abstract:
A frequently used measure of scientific (or research) collaboration is
co-authorship in scholarly publications. Less frequently used are joint
grant proposals and patents. Many scholars believe that the use of
co-authorship as the sole measure of research collaboration is
insufficient because collaboration between researchers might not result
in co-authorship. Collaborations involve informal communication (i.e.,
conversational exchange) between researchers. Using self-reports from
100 tenured/tenure-track faculty in the College of Engineering at the
University of South Florida, researchers' networks are constructed from
their communication relationships and also from collaborations in three
areas: joint publications, joint grant proposals, and joint patents. The
data collection: (1) covers both researchers' in-progress and completed
collaborative outputs, (2) yields a rating from the researchers on the
importance of a relationship to them and (3) obtains multiple types of
relationship ties between researchers allowing for the comparison of
multiple networks. Exponential random graph models (ERGMs) results show
that the more communication researchers have the more likely they
produce collaborative outputs. Furthermore, we find that joint grant
proposals tend to have mixed gender teams and that researchers of the
same race are more likely to publish together, but those demographic
attributes have no additional explanatory power regarding joint patents.

Coherent measures of the impact of co-authors in peer review journals and in proceedings publications

Abstract:
This paper focuses on the coauthor effect in different types of
publications, usually not equally respected in measuring research
impact. A priori unexpected relationships are found between the total
coauthor core value, m(a), of a leading investigator (LI), and the
related values for their publications in either peer review journals (j)
or in proceedings (p). A surprisingly linear relationship is found:
m(a)((j)) + 0.4 m(a)((p)), = m(a)((jp)). Furthermore, another
relationship is found concerning the measure of the total number of
citations, A(a), i.e. the surface of the citation size-rank histogram up
to m(a). Another linear relationship exists : A(a)((j)) + 1.36 A(a)((p))
= A(a)((jp)). These empirical findings coefficients (0.4 and 1.36) are
supported by considerations based on an empirical power law found
between the number of joint publications of an author and the rank of a
coauthor. Moreover, a simple power law relationship is found between
m(a) and the number (r(M)) of coauthors of an LI: m(a) similar or equal
to r(M)(mu) the power law exponent mu depends on the type (j or p) of
publications. These simple relations, at this time limited to
publications in physics, imply that coauthors are a "more positive
measure" of a principal investigator role, in both types of scientific
outputs, than the Hirsch index could indicate. Therefore, to scorn upon
co-authors in publications, in particular in proceedings, is incorrect.
On the contrary, the findings suggest an immediate test of coherence of
scientific authorship in scientific policy processes. (C) 2015 Elsevier

Abstract:
Citation classics identify those highly cited papers which are an
important reference point in a research field. Identifying citation
classics in a research field is one of the main approaches used to
conduct a systematic evaluation of research performance. Highly cited
articles are interesting due to the potential association between high
citation counts and high quality research.
The aim of this study is to identify and analyze the most frequently
cited papers published into the Fuzzy Decision Making research field,
using the H-Classics approach which is based in the well-known H-index.
The Fuzzy Decision Making is represented by 70 highly citations classics
which where published from 1981 to 2010. Furthermore, authors,
affiliations, journals and the concept covered by those 70 highly cited
documents are analyzed.
We identify three countries that have contributed substantially to
development of the Fuzzy Decision Making research field: Spain, Peoples
Republic of China and USA. Regarding the journals, Fuzzy Sets and
Systems, European Journal of Operation Research, IEEE Transactions on
Fuzzy Systems and International Journal of Intelligent Systems are the
ones where the citations classics have been mainly published. Finally,
the concepts covered by those citations classics are related with
techniques and tools used in Fuzzy Sets theory and Fuzzy Decision Making
research field, and terms related with Decision making theory and its
developments. (C) 2014 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. Open

Abstract:
ObjectiveWe assessed the relationship between the size of the 39 Journal
Citation Reports (JCR) medical categories and impact factor (IF) of
journals in these categories, and the implications that it might have
for emergency medicine (EM) journals.Materials and methodsUsing the 2010
JCR database, we calculated the mean IF, 5-year IF (5y-IF), Eigenfactor
(EF), and Article Influence (AI) scores including all journals for each
category. We also calculated a weighted IF' for all journals by dividing
each journal IF by the mean IF of its category. We ranked EM journals
according to IF and weighted IF' into all the journals included in the
39 categories. We assessed the relationship between category size and
bibliometric scores by linear regression.ResultsCategory size varied
from 252 journals (Pharmacology and Pharmacy) to 14 (Primary
Healthcare), EM category occupying the 36th position (23 journals). The
mean IF of EM category ranked in 34th position, 5-yIF in 32nd, EF in
34th, and AI in 34th position. Category size had a direct and
significant association with mean IF, 5y-IF, and AI but not with mean
EF. When the EM journals were ranked among all the journals according to
their IF, only two (9%) were placed into the first quartile and raised
up to eight (35%) when weighted IF' was considered.ConclusionThere is a
negative relationship between JCR size category and IF achieved by the
journals. This places EM journals at a clear disadvantage because they
represent one of the smallest clinical medical research disciplines.

Abstract:
Background: Bibliometric analysis is increasingly employed as a useful
tool to assess the quantity and quality of research performance. The
specific goal of the current study was to evaluate the performance of
research output originating from Arab world and published in
international Integrative and Complementary Medicine (ICM) journals.
Methods: Original scientific publications and reviews from the 22 Arab
countries that were published in 22 international peer-reviewed ICM
journals during all previous years up to December 31st 2013, were
screened using the Web of Science databases.
Results: Five hundred and ninety-one documents were retrieved from 19
ICM journals. The h-index of the set of papers under study was 47. The
highest h-index was 27 for Morocco, 21 for Jordan, followed by 19 for
each Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), and Egypt, and the lowest h-index
was 1 for each of Comoros, Qatar, and Syrian Arab Republic. No data
related to ICM were published from Djibouti, and Mauritania. After
adjusting for economy and population power, Somalia (89), Morocco
(32.5), Egypt (31.1), Yemen (21.4), and Palestine (21.2) had the highest
research productivity. The total number of citations was 9,466, with an
average citation of 16 per document. The study identified 262 (44.3 %)
documents with 39 countries in Arab-foreign country collaborations. Arab
authors collaborated most with countries in Europe (24.2 %), followed by
countries in the Asia-Pacific region (9.8 %).
Conclusion: Scientific research output in the ICM field in the Arab
world region is increasing. Most of publications from Arab world in ICM
filed were driven by societal use of medicinal plants and herbs. Search
for new therapies from available low cost medicinal plants in Arab world
has motivated many researchers in academia and pharmaceutical industry.
Further investigation is required to support these findings in a wider
journal as well as to improve research output in the field of ICM from
Arab world region by investing in more national and international
collaborative research project.

Abstract:
Responding to a series of articles in sport management literature
calling for more diversity in terms of areas of interest or methods,
this study warns against the danger of excessively fragmenting this
field of research. The works of T. Kuhn (1962) and J. Pfeffer (1993) are
taken as the basis of an argument connecting convergence with scientific
strength. However, being aware of the large number of counterarguments
directed at this line of reasoning, a new model of convergence, which
focuses on clusters of research contributions with similar areas of
interest, methods, and concepts, is proposed. The existence of these
clusters is determined with the help of a bibliometric analysis of
publications in three sport management journals. This analysis
determines that there are justified reasons to be concerned about the
level of convergence in the field, pointing to a reduced ability to
create large clusters of contributions in similar areas of interest.

Title:
The Pagerank-Index: Going beyond Citation Counts in Quantifying Scientific Impact of Researchers

Abstract:
Quantifying and comparing the scientific output of researchers has
become critical for governments, funding agencies and universities.
Comparison by reputation and direct assessment of contributions to the
field is no longer possible, as the number of scientists increases and
traditional definitions about scientific fields become blurred. The
h-index is often used for comparing scientists, but has several
well-documented shortcomings. In this paper, we introduce a new index
for measuring and comparing the publication records of scientists: the
pagerank-index (symbolised as pi). The index uses a version of pagerank
algorithm and the citation networks of papers in its computation, and is
fundamentally different from the existing variants of h-index because it
considers not only the number of citations but also the actual impact of
each citation. We adapt two approaches to demonstrate the utility of the
new index. Firstly, we use a simulation model of a community of authors,
whereby we create various 'groups' of authors which are different from
each other in inherent publication habits, to show that the
pagerank-index is fairer than the existing indices in three distinct
scenarios: (i) when authors try to 'massage' their index by publishing
papers in low-quality outlets primarily to self-cite other papers (ii)
when authors collaborate in large groups in order to obtain more
authorships (iii) when authors spend most of their time in producing
genuine but low quality publications that would massage their index.
Secondly, we undertake two real world case studies: (i) the evolving
author community of quantum game theory, as defined by Google Scholar
(ii) a snapshot of the high energy physics (HEP) theory research
community in arXiv. In both case studies, we find that the list of top
authors vary very significantly when h-index and pagerank-index are used
for comparison. We show that in both cases, authors who have
collaborated in large groups and/or published less impactful papers tend
to be comparatively favoured by the h-index, whereas the pagerank-index
highlights authors who have made a relatively small number of definitive
contributions, or written papers which served to highlight the link
between diverse disciplines, or typically worked in smaller groups.
Thus, we argue that the pagerank-index is an inherently fairer and more
nuanced metric to quantify the publication records of scientists
compared to existing measures.

Abstract:
This study aims to present and analyze Pearson Correlation Coefficient
(r) and Salton's Cosine (CS) as proximity indicators to Author
Co-citation Analysis and compare the contribution of these two
indicators to visualize proximity among co-cited authors, evaluating the
correlation between the indicators and identifying clusters of co-cited
researchers formed from the two indices, using published articles on the
topic "Metric Studies" from BRAPCI database. From a previous research,
we retrieved the matrices with absolute frequencies of co-citation of
the 38 most cited authors, normalized by Salton's cosine. Then the
matrix was yielded with the values of the Pearson's correlation among
the co-cited authors, using the SPSS software. The indices were
analyzed, especially Salton's cosine and the Pearson's correlation. The
correlation among the 703 pairs from both indices were calculated,
represented by a scatterplot of values. From each matrix-Salton's Cosine
and Pearson's Correlation-, two analyzes of clusters were performed,
generating two dendograms, which were used to the comparative analysis
of the clusters. In conclusion, we highlight that coauthors have high
indices of CS and r. Moreover, we observed a trend toward low values for
CS paired with low values of r. We concluded, therefore, that although
CS measures local proximity and r measures global proximity, these
indices show the same trends in relation to proximity.

Abstract:
Bibliometry is a quantitative statistical technique to measure levels of
production and dissemination of knowledge, as well as a useful tool to
track the development of an scientific area. The valuation of production
required for recognition of researchers and magazines is accomplished
through tools called bibliometricindexes, divided into quality
indicators and scientific impact. Initially developed for monographs of
statistical measures especially in libraries, today bibliometrics is
mainly used to evaluate productivity of authors and citation
repercussion. However, these tools have limitations and sometimes
provoke controversies about indiscriminate application, leading to the
development of newer indexes. It is important to know the most common
search indexes and use it properly even acknowledging its limitations as
it has a direct impact in their daily practice, reputation and funds
achievement.

Abstract:
A bibliometric analysis of community forestry research outputs in Canada
was undertaken to 1) better understand the current status as well as
spatial and temporal trends in research published in peer-reviewed
journals, 2) identify gaps in the research literature, and 3) provide
baseline data to inform future research. For each publication,
information on several core metrics was gathered, for example: (i) year
of publication, (ii) number of authors, (iii) author affiliation, (iv)
gender and role, (v) journal title, (vi) citation count and (vii)
keywords. Temporal and spatial trends were analysed to detect periods of
heightened activity and geographical focus. Using a systematic and
comprehensive approach we identified 85 papers published in
peer-reviewed journals between 1935 and 2014. Research output during
WWII and 1990 onwards corresponds with the implementation of provincial
policy and programs initiated for conservation, economic development,
and to resolve social unrest. Notably, most papers analysed originated
from social science research, particularly geography, and not forestry
or the biophysical sciences presenting a clear disciplinary gap.
Findings portray the temporal, spatial, and thematic evolution of
community forestry research and policy in Canada. Crown Copyright (C)

Abstract:
The objective of this study is to report on research production and
publications on health inequalities through a bibliometric analysis
covering publications from 1966 to 2014 and a content analysis of the 25
most-cited papers. A database of 49,294 references was compiled from the
search engine Web of Science. The first article appears in 1966 and
deals with equality and civil rights in the United States and the
elimination of racial discrimination in access to medical care. By 2003,
the term disparity has gained in prominence relative to the term
inequality which was initially elected by the researchers. Marmot's 1991
article is one of the five papers with the largest number of citations
and contributes to the central perspective of social determinants of
health and the British influence on the international status of research
on social inequalities of health. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights

Abstract:
Background
The European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP)
is a partnership of European and sub-Saharan African countries that aims
to accelerate the development of medical interventions against
poverty-related diseases (PRDs). A bibliometric analysis was conducted
to 1) measure research output from European and African researchers on
PRDs, 2) describe collaboration patterns, and 3) assess the citation
impact of clinical research funded by EDCTP.
Methodology/Principal Findings
Disease-specific research publications were identified in Thomson
Reuters Web of Science using search terms in titles, abstracts and
keywords. Publication data, including citation counts, were extracted
for 2003-2011. Analyses including output, share of global papers,
normalised citation impact (NCI), and geographical distribution are
presented. Data are presented as five-year moving averages. European
EDCTP member countries accounted for similar to 33% of global research
output in PRDs and sub-Saharan African countries for similar to 10%
(2007-2011). Both regions contributed more to the global research output
in malaria (43.4% and 22.2%, respectively). The overall number of PRD
papers from sub-Saharan Africa increased markedly (>47%) since 2003,
particularly for HIV/AIDS (102%) and tuberculosis (TB) (81%), and
principally involving Southern and East Africa. For 2007-2011, European
and sub-Saharan African research collaboration on PRDs was highly cited
compared with the world average (NCI in brackets): HIV/AIDS 1.62 (NCI:
1.16), TB 2.11 (NCI: 1.06), malaria 1.81 (NCI: 1.22), and neglected
infectious diseases 1.34 (NCI: 0.97). The NCI of EDCTP-funded papers for
2003-2011 was exceptionally high for HIV/AIDS (3.24), TB (4.08) and
HIV/TB co-infection (5.10) compared with global research benchmarks
(1.14, 1.05 and 1.35, respectively).
Conclusions
The volume and citation impact of papers from sub-Saharan Africa has
increased since 2003, as has collaborative research between Europe and
sub-Saharan Africa. >90% of publications from EDCTP-funded research were
published in high-impact journals and are highly cited. These findings
corroborate the benefit of collaborative research on PRDs.

Abstract:
Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the quantity and quality of
articles from different countries involving arthroscopy to investigate
the characteristics of worldwide research productivity. Methods: Web of
Science was searched for arthroscopy articles published between 1999 and
2013. The numbers of articles and citations were analyzed to assess the
contributions of different countries. Publication activity was adjusted
by country population and gross domestic product (GDP). Results: A total
of 12,553 articles were published worldwide. The time trend for the
number of articles showed an increase of 2.27-fold between 1999 and
2013. North America, Western Europe, and Eastern Asia were the most
productive areas. High-income countries published 90.86% of the
articles; middle-income countries, 9.11%; and lower-income countries,
only 0.02%. The United States published the most articles (35.40%),
followed by Germany (9.53%), the United Kingdom (6.80%), the Republic of
Korea (5.45%), and Japan (4.76%), and had the highest total citations
(78,161). However, Sweden had the highest mean citations (35.56),
followed by Switzerland (23.39) and the Netherlands (18.90). There were
positive correlations between the number of publications and
population/GDP (P < .01). When normalized to population, Switzerland
ranked the highest, followed by Finland and Sweden. When adjusted by
GDP, the Republic of Korea ranked first, followed by Finland and Turkey.
Conclusions: The number of publications on arthroscopy increased
significantly from 1999 to 2013, with a more than 2-fold increase in
volume. The United States was the most productive country as measured by
total publications, but when adjusted for population, Switzerland
published the highest number of articles, followed by Finland and
Sweden. When publications were adjusted for GDP, the Republic of Korea
ranked first, with Finland second and Turkey third.Clinical Relevance:
Bibliometric analysis allows us to understand contributions of different
world regions in scientific research in the field of arthroscopy and
gives insight into the quantity and quality of articles related to
arthroscopy.

Abstract:
Education scientific journals are a key element for the progress of
educational research. The added value which might be expected from the
rising prices of scientific journals has one of its accountable factors
in the bibliometric indicators as a measure of performance. The research
question addressed in this paper is whether there are significant
differences in bibliometric performance of the most expensive (in terms
of price per article, price per citation and other related measures
detailed in Appendix I) educational research journals in JCR 2013 when
compared with the less expensive educational journals or not. For this
purpose, data was gathered from Journal Prices and Journal Citation
Reports, for Education & Educational Research journals. Statistical
analyses comparing the bibliometric performance of the most expensive
against the less expensive educational research journals evidences the
existence of non-significative differences between the two segments in
most of the variables analyzed, thus putting into question the added
value of buying and / or publishing in expensive educational research
journals. It is concluded that, at least from a bibliometric
perspective, expensive educational journals do not add significant value
to the contents published. This can be understood as an abnormality in
the market of scientific journals and might, in the long run, compromise
the knowledge exchange among researchers working in education fields.

Abstract:
Although various citation-based indicators are commonly used to help
research evaluations, there are ongoing controversies about their value.
In response, they are often correlated with quality ratings or with
other quantitative indicators in order to partly assess their validity.
When correlations are calculated for sets of publications from multiple
disciplines or years, however, the magnitude of the correlation
coefficient may be reduced, masking the strength of the underlying
correlation. This article uses simulations to systematically investigate
the extent to which mixing years or disciplines reduces correlations.
The results show that mixing two sets of articles with different
correlation strengths can reduce the correlation for the combined set to
substantially below the average of the two. Moreover, even mixing two
sets of articles with the same correlation strength but different mean
citation counts can substantially reduce the correlation for the
combined set. The extent of the reduction in correlation also depends
upon whether the articles assessed have been pre-selected for being high
quality and whether the relationship between the quality ratings and
citation counts is linear or exponential. The results underline the
importance of using homogeneous data sets but also help to interpret
correlation coefficients when this is impossible. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:
Using (binomial) regression analysis, we run models using citation
windows of one to ten years with both annual citation and cumulative
citations as dependent variables, and with both bibliometric and quality
indicators (judgments of peers) as independent variables. The
bibliometric variables are the Journal *Impact Factor* (JIF) of the
publication medium, the numbers of authors and pages, and the
statistical citedness of the references used within the paper. We find
that the JIF has a larger influence on the citation impact of a
publication than the quality (measured by judgments of peers). However,
the number of pages and the quality of the references are less
influential. The influence of JIF peaks after three years and then
declines (in most regression analyses), but remains higher than the
influence of quality judgments even after ten years. These results call
into question a discrepancy between the algorithmically based indicators
and the qualitative judgments by experts. The latter seems less
predictive for future citation than a combination of algorithmic
constructs. The results of this study can contribute to the empirical
specification of the relevance of a normative versus a constructivist
theory of citation. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
The citation behavior of Nobel Prize winning articles in physics
published by selected Chinese Americans, discussed before (Liu, Y. X. &
Rousseau, R. (2014). Journal of American Society for Information Science
and Technology, 65(2), 281-289), is analyzed using a unified
Avrami-Weibull equation based on concepts of formation of citation
nuclei instantaneously and progressively similar to the concepts
involved in the theories of overall crystallization of solid phase from
a closed liquid system of fixed volume. It was found that: (1) initial
concave and convex curvatures of plots of cumulative citations L(t) of
individual articles against citation time t are associated with the
generation of citations by instantaneous and progressive citation
nucleation, respectively, (2) the time constant ID and exponent q in the
unified relation are indicators that distinguish between the L(t) plots
with initial concave and convex curvatures for individual articles, (3)
in cases of L(t) plots with initial convex curvature, the data may be
described by the unified relation with q >1 (i.e. when nuclei are formed
progressively) and/or by power-law relation, and (4) in some cases two
citation regions of an L(t) plots follow different nucleation mechanisms
or the same mechanism with different values of the parameters of its
equation. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
A fundamental problem in citation analysis is the prediction of the
long-term citation impact of recent publications. We propose a model to
predict a probability distribution for the future number of citations of
a publication. Two predictors are used: the *impact factor* of the
journal in which a publication has appeared and the number of citations
a publication has received one year after its appearance. The proposed
model is based on quantile regression. We employ the model to predict
the future number of citations of a large set of publications in the
field of physics. Our analysis shows that both predictors (i.e., *impact
factor* and early citations) contribute to the accurate prediction of
long-term citation impact. We also analytically study the behavior of
the quantile regression coefficients for high quantiles of the
distribution of citations. This is done by linking the quantile
regression approach to a quantile estimation technique from extreme
value theory. Our work provides insight into the influence of the
*impact factor* and early citations on the long-term citation impact of
a publication, and it takes a step toward a methodology that can be used
to assess research institutions based on their most recently published
work. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
We studied the factors ( recent and older journals, publication types,
electronic or print form, open or subscription access, funding,
affiliation, language and home country of publisher) that contributed to
the growth of literature in Biomedical and Life Sciences as reflected in
PubMed in the period 2004-2013. Only records indexed as journal articles
were studied. 7364,633 journal articles were added in PubMed between
2004 and 2013 (48.9% increase from 2003). Recently launched journals
showed the greater increase in published articles, but older journals
contributed the greater number of articles. The observed growth was
mainly attributed to articles to which no other PubMed publication type
was assigned. Articles available in both print and electronic form
increased substantially (61.1%). Both open (80.8%) and subscription
access (54.7%) articles increased significantly. Funding from nonUS
government sources also contributed significantly (74.5%). Asian (114%)
and European (34.9%) first author affiliation increased at a higher rate
than American publications (7.9%). English remained the predominant
language of publications. USA- and England-based organizations published
a gradually increasing body of literature. Open access, non-US
government funding and Asian origin of the first author were the factors
contributing to literature growth as depicted in PubMed. A better
assignment of publication types is required. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All

Abstract:
The phenomenon of China's rise as an emerging scientific power has been
well documented, yet the development of its social science is less
explored. Utilizing up-to-date Social Science Citation Index (SSCI)
publication data (1978-2013), this paper probes the patterns and
dynamics of China's social science research via bibliometric analyses.
Our research indicates that despite the national orientation of social
science research and the linguistic obstacle of publishing for an
international audience, China's publications in the SSCI dataset have
been rising in terms of volume, world share, and global ranking. But
China is still not yet a major player in the arena of social sciences,
as is evidenced by the number of Chinese journals indexed in SSCI and
the lack of Olympic players. Team research features China's
international publishing in social science, but the research outputs are
highly unbalanced at regional and institutional levels. (C) 2015

Abstract:
Publications have been regarded as the most significant output of
science and technology (S&T) indicating research performance of
universities, especially in research-oriented universities. This paper
takes University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC)
as example and analyze the growth and development of research activity
of the university as reflected in publications output covered by Science
Citation Index Expanded (SCI-E) and Essential Science Indicators (ESI)
database with the help of bibliometric indicators. This paper presents
the analysis of 8050 publications that were published in different SCI-E
periodicals between 2003 and 2012, focusing on five aspects of the SCI-E
publication during 2003 to 2012, thus, the annual distribution of
publication, authorship pattern, collaborative country, scientific
disciplines and highly cited paper. From the paper, it hopes to provide
a model basis for S&T research management and S&T research work.

Abstract:
The history of science and technology has an important place in the
education of STEM professionals, particularly when it comes to helping
to support their desire to successfully invent, innovate, and
disseminate new ideas. History, considered as one of the liberal arts,
should be thought of as describing the different possibilities that had
to be negotiated before arriving at the present. When presented as one
of the liberal arts, constructivist insights can serve as a springboard
for a student's future research as well as a means for becoming more
successful in meeting the challenges of dissemination. The STS approach
known as social constructivism can be effectively demonstrated though
historical analysis. Two methods of incorporating history into STEM
education are discussed: a minilesson (or module) approach as part of a
hands-on research program and an approach using general education
courses for undergraduates.

Abstract:
Purpose - The aim of this study is to analyse the disciplinary coverage
of Thomson Reuters' Book Citation Index database focusing on publisher
presence, impact and specialisation.
Design/methodology/approach - The authors conducted a descriptive study
in which they examined coverage by discipline, publisher distribution by
field and country of publication, and publisher impact. For this purpose
the Thomson Reuters' subject categories were aggregated into 15
disciplines.
Findings - Humanities and social sciences comprise 30 per cent of the
total share of this database. Most of the disciplines are covered by
very few publishers mainly from the UK and USA (75.05 per cent of the
books), in fact 33 publishers hold 90 per cent of the whole share.
Regarding publisher impact, 80.5 per cent of the books and chapters
remained uncited. Two serious errors were found in this database: the
Book Citation Index does not retrieve all citations for books and
chapters; and book citations do not include citations to their chapters.
Originality/value - There are currently no studies analysing in depth
the coverage of this novel database which covers monographs.
