Abstract:
Easily accessible patent databases and advances in technology have
enabled the exploration of organizational innovation through the
analysis of patent records. However, the textual content of patents
presents obstacles to gleaning useful information. In this study, we
develop an expert system framework that utilizes text and data mining
procedures for analyzing innovation through textual patent data.
Specifically, we use patent titles representing the innovation activity
at one company (SAP) and perform a bibliometric analysis using our
proposed framework. Enterprise software, of which SAP is a pioneering
developer, must serve a wide assortment of functions for companies in
many different industries. In addition, SAP's sole focus is on
enterprise software and it is a market leader in the category with
substantial patent activity over the last decade. Using our framework to
analyze SAP's patent activity provides a demonstration of how our
bibliometric analysis can summarize and identify trends in innovation in
a large software company. Our results illustrate that SAP has a breadth
of innovative activity spread over the three-tier software engineering
architecture and a lack of topical repetition indicative of limited
depth. SAP's innovation is also seen to emphasize data management and
quickly integrate emerging technologies. Results of an analysis on any
company following our framework could be used for a variety of purposes,
including: to examine the scope and scale of innovation of an
organization, to examine the influence of technological trends on
businesses, or to gain insight into corporate strategy that could be
used to aid planning, investment, and purchasing decisions. (C) 2015

Abstract:
The aim was to evaluate natural fibers (fiber crops or fiber plants) in
Scopus, Web of Science (WOS), and Google Scholar with regard to growth
trends and leading countries by authors/coauthors of documents. Basic
functionalities of information systems were assessed. Search syntax was
based on article titles, abstracts, and keywords (topics). The three
information systems can only be consistently compared on the basis of
article titles. Different ranks of individual fiber crops can be
observed among the systems. The cumulative data for the entire period
show different characteristics than the more recent trends. Specific
crops show more intensive growth in the recent period. Retrieval with
topics in Scopus and WOS also shows differences, probably on account of
indexing method (KeyWords Plus in WOS and thesauri descriptors in
Scopus). Several countries are ranked much higher in WOS than Scopus,
and vice versa, indicating differences in coverage of journals. The
principal contributing countries are China, India, and USA. China
returns similar total counts as USA in 1994-2013 but is producing twice
as many records in the most recent period. Interpretation of results
depends on the query (selection of search terms, fields, and search
syntax) and database or information system under analysis.

Novel citation-based search method for scientific literature: application to meta-analyses

Abstract:
Background: Finding eligible studies for meta-analysis and systematic
reviews relies on keyword-based searching as the gold standard, despite
its inefficiency. Searching based on direct citations is not
sufficiently comprehensive. We propose a novel strategy that ranks
articles on their degree of co-citation with one or more "known"
articles before reviewing their eligibility.
Method: In two independent studies, we aimed to reproduce the results of
literature searches for sets of published meta-analyses (n = 10 and n =
42). For each meta-analysis, we extracted co-citations for the randomly
selected 'known' articles from the Web of Science database, counted
their frequencies and screened all articles with a score above a
selection threshold. In the second study, we extended the method by
retrieving direct citations for all selected articles.
Results: In the first study, we retrieved 82 % of the studies included
in the meta-analyses while screening only 11 % as many articles as were
screened for the original publications. Articles that we missed were
published in non-English languages, published before 1975, published
very recently, or available only as conference abstracts. In the second
study, we retrieved 79 % of included studies while screening half the
original number of articles.
Conclusions: Citation searching appears to be an efficient and
reasonably accurate method for finding articles similar to one or more
articles of interest for meta-analysis and reviews.

Abstract:
Background and aim: Citation analysis helps to identify the research
trends within a research field and helps to identify the most frequently
occurring parameters. The aim of this study was to identify the 100
most-cited articles in the field of dental, oral, and maxillofacial
traumatology over the past 64 years. Material and methods: A
comprehensive list of the most-cited articles in dental, oral, and
maxillofacial trauma was compiled using 'All Databases' section of the
ISI Web of Knowledge. Related articles were considered to be those
articles in which part or all of the experiment or study was related to
dental and/or oral and maxillofacial trauma. In case reports, if a part
of a treatment plan was related to the topic, that article was
considered to be relevant. The characteristics analyzed included number
of citations, authors, journals, institution, country of origin,
publication year, article type, study material, and topic. Results: The
number of citations for each article ranged from 69 to 229. The journal
Dental Traumatology was the most represented, followed by the journal
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Of the 100 articles, 83% were original
articles, 15% were review articles, and 2% were case report/case series.
Therapy and prognosis-related topics were the most common topics. Most
articles came from institutions in the United States, followed by the
Scandinavian countries. University Hospital of Copenhagen was the source
of the highest number (34) of the most-cited articles; the same author
wrote or co-wrote 22 of the 100 most-cited articles. Conclusion: The
list of most-cited articles in the field of dental, oral, and
maxillofacial traumatology gives a good scientometric picture of trauma
research in the world. A large number of the most-cited articles are
mainly from the field of dental traumatology and originate from a few
research teams.

Abstract:
The extensive use of the web by many sectors of society has created the
potential for new wider impact indicators. This article reviews research
about Google Scholar and Google Patents, both of which can be used as
sources of impact indicators for academic articles. It also briefly
reviews methods to extract types of links and citations from the web as
a whole, although the indicators that these generate are now probably
too broad and too dominated by automatically generated websites, such as
library and publisher catalogues, to be useful in practice. More
valuable web-based indicators can be derived from specific types of web
pages that cite academic research, such as online presentations, course
syllabi, and science blogs. These provide evidence that is easier to
understand and use and less likely to be affected by unwanted types of
automatically generated content, although they are susceptible to
gaming.

Abstract:
It is quite common in the library and information world to find mobile
applications (apps) to query scientific journals, bibliographic
databases or university libraries. However, there are no apps that offer
bibliometric indicators about universities, researchers, etc. We
describe the development and functionality of the pioneer bibliometric
app UGRinvestiga, launched on January 2015, which offers rankings of
researchers from the University of Granada based on citations collected
from Google Scholar Profiles. Information on the technical features of
the app, the data collection process, the indicators used, the current
coverage of researchers and a description of its interface and
functionalities are described. Finally we emphasize the great potential
of mobile applications as a tool for representing and disseminating
bibliometric data.

Abstract:
Background: The bibliometric methods have been used in many disciplines
of sciences to study the scientific production and research trends. In
this study, they were used to investigate research trends related to the
risk assessment of Cryptosporidium pathogen in water field.
Methods: Data were obtained on the Scopus database from 1993 to 2013.
Research tendency was investigated by analyzing the distribution of
languages, countries, journals, author keywords, authorship pattern and
co-authorship relations.
Results: The English language was dominant language of all publications
(96.36%). Number of articles in this field increased from 2 in 1993 to
29 papers in 2007 and then received to 19 at the end of 2013. United
States produced 35.41% of all pertinent articles followed by United
Kingdom with 10.76% and Australia with 9.92%. Water Research Journal
published the most papers in this field, taking 11.62% of all, followed
by Journal of Water and Health (10.92%) and Water Science and Technology
(10.21%). The most productive authors were Ashbolt NJ form Canada that
accounts about 1.51% of the total publications followed by Rose JB and
Haas CN from United States. Authorship pattern analysis results show
that literature does follow Lotka's law (P=0.627).
Conclusion: A downward trend in the number of publications is likely to
occur in future. The results of this bibliometric analysis may help
relevant researchers realize the scope of the microbial risk assessment
research of Cryptosporidium, and establish the further research
direction.

Abstract:
Public transport research involves a lot of disciplinary and
interdisciplinary research applying methods, techniques, and
technologies to investigate, regulate, and advance public transport. The
importance of research in this area has led to a huge amount of
publications in recent years. In this study, we conducted a
comprehensive scientometric analysis of related literature published in
2009-2013 to empirically explore the consistence, focus areas, and key
contributors of public transport research from a meta-perspective,
providing novel insights into publication patterns, major topics,
research impact, and productivity by focusing on short-term
developments. As such, the results of this study provide a novel
perspective on public transport research and may help achieving an
overview on important characteristics.

Abstract:
In this paper, we reconstructed the medical history of frontotemporal
dementia (FTD) by reviewing the literature and analyzing papers with the
highest impact through citation index. Several research studies and
groups involved in FTD have been reviewed. An increasing amount of
knowledge has been made available in the last 20 years through a large
number of publications, leading to a better definition of the genetic
and clinical bases of the disease. A total of 1,436 references (articles
and reviews), published in 395 journals, were retrieved through the
Scopus database. The two highest publication peaks (i. e., largest
number of publications) were found in 2000 and 2008. The most cited
papers considering both total citation number and the number of
citations within the first two years after publication refer to: (i) the
genetic bases of FTD, (ii) the clinical criteria that progressively
refined the different FTD phenotypes, and (iii) FTD epidemiology.
Advanced neuroimaging techniques, genotype-phenotype heterogeneity, and
animal models gave us a broader understanding of various aspects of the
disorder. These findings confirm the great interest in FTD research. The
analysis of the literature might help in guiding future goals in the
field.

Abstract:
This study uses a bibliometric approach to identify global trends
related to the municipal solid waste (MSW). It applies related
literature in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-EXPANDED), Social
Sciences Citation Index (SSCI), Conference Proceedings Citation Index -
Science (CPCI-S) and Conference Proceedings Citation Index - Social
Science & Humanities (CPCI-SSH), retrieved from the ISI Web of Science.
The data used covers the period from 1997 to 2014. Analyzed aspects
included document type, and publication output as well as distribution
of journals, subject category, countries, institutions, title-words,
author keywords, and keywords plus. An evaluating indicator, citation
score, was applied to characterize the MSW publications. The research
outputs of MSW had steadily increased in the field of energy fuels,
engineering chemical and biotechnology applied microbiology, especially
environmental sciences and engineering environmental. The predominance
of Chinese institutions in terms of article count and a predominance of
industrialized countries' institutions in terms of citation score were
compared. Finally, author keywords, words in title, and keywords plus
were analyzed to provide research emphasis, with the developing trends
and recent hotspots provided.Implications:A systematic overview of
scientific literature dealing with municipal solid waste (MSW) is
provided by a bibliometric analysis. The analysis of author keywords
helps in drawing the research trends in a special perspective. Research
studies on food waste, life cycle assessment (LCA), and renewable energy
tend to be a new research focus in the area of MSW. The conclusions
could provide a reference to the decision making and policy of MSW
management for the government to some extent.

Abstract:
Over 20 years ago a remarkable paper was published in the Journal of American Society for Mass Spectrometry. This paper from Jimmy Eng, Ashley McCormack, and John Yates described the use of protein databases to drive the interpretation of tandem mass spectra of peptides. This paper now has over 3660 citations and continues to average more than 260 per year over the last decade. This is an amazing scientific achievement. The reason for this is the paper was a cutting edge development at the moment in time when genomes of organisms were being sequenced, protein and peptide mass spectrometry was growing into the field of proteomics, and the power of computing was growing quickly in accordance with Moore's law. This work by the Yates lab grew in importance as genomics, proteomics, and computation all advanced and eventually resulted in the widely used SEQUEST algorithm and platform for the analysis of tandem mass spectrometry data. This commentary provides an analysis of the impact of this paper by analyzing the citations it has generated and the impact of these citing papers.

Abstract:
Background: To promote research activities in a particular research area, it is important to efficiently identify current research trends, advances, and issues in that area. Although review papers in the research area can suffice for this purpose in general, researchers are not necessarily able to obtain these papers from research aspects of their interests at the time they are required. Therefore, the utilization of the citation contexts of papers in a research area has been considered as another approach. However, there are few search services to retrieve citation contexts in the life sciences domain; furthermore, efficiently obtaining citation contexts is becoming difficult due to the large volume and rapid growth of life sciences papers.
Results: Here, we introduce the Colil (Comments on Literature in
Literature) database to store citation contexts in the life sciences domain. By using the Resource Description Framework (RDF) and a newly compiled vocabulary, we built the Colil database and made it available through the SPARQL endpoint. In addition, we developed a web-based search service called Colil that searches for a cited paper in the Colil database and then returns a list of citation contexts for it along with papers relevant to it based on co-citations. The citation contexts in the Colil database were extracted from full-text papers of the PubMed Central Open Access Subset (PMC-OAS), which includes 545,147 papers indexed in PubMed. These papers are distributed across 3,171 journals and cite 5,136,741 unique papers that correspond to approximately 25 % of total PubMed entries.
Conclusions: By utilizing Colil, researchers can easily refer to a set of citation contexts and relevant papers based on co-citations for a target paper. Colil helps researchers to comprehend life sciences papers in a research area more efficiently and makes their biological research more efficient.

Abstract:
Background: Finding eligible studies for meta-analysis and systematic reviews relies on keyword-based searching as the gold standard, despite its inefficiency. Searching based on direct citations is not sufficiently comprehensive. We propose a novel strategy that ranks articles on their degree of co-citation with one or more "known"
articles before reviewing their eligibility.
Method: In two independent studies, we aimed to reproduce the results of literature searches for sets of published meta-analyses (n = 10 and n = 42). For each meta-analysis, we extracted co-citations for the randomly selected 'known' articles from the Web of Science database, counted their frequencies and screened all articles with a score above a selection threshold. In the second study, we extended the method by retrieving direct citations for all selected articles.
Results: In the first study, we retrieved 82 % of the studies included in the meta-analyses while screening only 11 % as many articles as were screened for the original publications. Articles that we missed were published in non-English languages, published before 1975, published very recently, or available only as conference abstracts. In the second study, we retrieved 79 % of included studies while screening half the original number of articles.
Conclusions: Citation searching appears to be an efficient and reasonably accurate method for finding articles similar to one or more articles of interest for meta-analysis and reviews.

Abstract:
Background and aim: Citation analysis helps to identify the research trends within a research field and helps to identify the most frequently occurring parameters. The aim of this study was to identify the 100 most-cited articles in the field of dental, oral, and maxillofacial traumatology over the past 64 years. Material and methods: A comprehensive list of the most-cited articles in dental, oral, and maxillofacial trauma was compiled using 'All Databases' section of the ISI Web of Knowledge. Related articles were considered to be those articles in which part or all of the experiment or study was related to dental and/or oral and maxillofacial trauma. In case reports, if a part of a treatment plan was related to the topic, that article was considered to be relevant. The characteristics analyzed included number of citations, authors, journals, institution, country of origin, publication year, article type, study material, and topic. Results: The number of citations for each article ranged from 69 to 229. The journal Dental Traumatology was the most represented, followed by the journal Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Of the 100 articles, 83% were original articles, 15% were review articles, and 2% were case report/case series.
Therapy and prognosis-related topics were the most common topics. Most articles came from institutions in the United States, followed by the Scandinavian countries. University Hospital of Copenhagen was the source of the highest number (34) of the most-cited articles; the same author wrote or co-wrote 22 of the 100 most-cited articles. Conclusion: The list of most-cited articles in the field of dental, oral, and maxillofacial traumatology gives a good scientometric picture of trauma research in the world. A large number of the most-cited articles are mainly from the field of dental traumatology and originate from a few research teams.

Abstract:
This paper analyses factors that affect the funding of agricultural research projects by regional governments and other regional public authorities. We study the selection process of agricultural research projects funded by the Emilia Romagna regional government in Italy, which follows funding procedures similar to many other European regional public authorities. Leveraging a unique dataset, a Heckman selection model demonstrates that the scientific merit of proposed projects is the primary selection criterion. Still, factors such as the experience of the proposal's reviewers and the gender composition of the reviewing team also influence whether or not a submitted proposal receives funding as well as the amount allocated to the proposal. Abstract:
Over 20 years ago a remarkable paper was published in the Journal of
American Society for Mass Spectrometry. This paper from Jimmy Eng,
Ashley McCormack, and John Yates described the use of protein databases
to drive the interpretation of tandem mass spectra of peptides. This
paper now has over 3660 citations and continues to average more than 260
per year over the last decade. This is an amazing scientific
achievement. The reason for this is the paper was a cutting edge
development at the moment in time when genomes of organisms were being
sequenced, protein and peptide mass spectrometry was growing into the
field of proteomics, and the power of computing was growing quickly in
accordance with Moore's law. This work by the Yates lab grew in
importance as genomics, proteomics, and computation all advanced and
eventually resulted in the widely used SEQUEST algorithm and platform
for the analysis of tandem mass spectrometry data. This commentary
provides an analysis of the impact of this paper by analyzing the
citations it has generated and the impact of these citing papers.

Colil: a database and search service for citation contexts in the life sciences domain

Abstract:
Background: To promote research activities in a particular research
area, it is important to efficiently identify current research trends,
advances, and issues in that area. Although review papers in the
research area can suffice for this purpose in general, researchers are
not necessarily able to obtain these papers from research aspects of
their interests at the time they are required. Therefore, the
utilization of the citation contexts of papers in a research area has
been considered as another approach. However, there are few search
services to retrieve citation contexts in the life sciences domain;
furthermore, efficiently obtaining citation contexts is becoming
difficult due to the large volume and rapid growth of life sciences
papers.
Results: Here, we introduce the Colil (Comments on Literature in
Literature) database to store citation contexts in the life sciences
domain. By using the Resource Description Framework (RDF) and a newly
compiled vocabulary, we built the Colil database and made it available
through the SPARQL endpoint. In addition, we developed a web-based
search service called Colil that searches for a cited paper in the Colil
database and then returns a list of citation contexts for it along with
papers relevant to it based on co-citations. The citation contexts in
the Colil database were extracted from full-text papers of the PubMed
Central Open Access Subset (PMC-OAS), which includes 545,147 papers
indexed in PubMed. These papers are distributed across 3,171 journals
and cite 5,136,741 unique papers that correspond to approximately 25 %
of total PubMed entries.
Conclusions: By utilizing Colil, researchers can easily refer to a set
of citation contexts and relevant papers based on co-citations for a
target paper. Colil helps researchers to comprehend life sciences papers
in a research area more efficiently and makes their biological research
more efficient.

Abstract:
We present a new computational methodology to identify national political elites, and demonstrate it for Indonesia. On the basis that elites have an "organised capacity to make real and continuing political trouble", we identify them as those individuals who occur most frequently in a large corpus of politically-oriented newspaper articles.
Doing this requires mainly well-established named entity recognition techniques and appears to work well. More ambitiously, we also experiment with a new technique to map the relational networks among them. To establish these networks, we assume that individuals co-occurring in one sentence are related. The co-occurrence technique has rarely been applied to identify elite networks. The resulting network has a core-periphery structure. Although this in line with our sociological expectations of an elite network, we find that this structure does not differ significantly from that of a randomly generated co-occurrence network. We explain that this unexpected result arises as an artefact of the data. Finally, we assess the future potential of our elite network mapping technique. We conclude it remains promising, but only if we are able to add more sociological meaning to relations between elites.
