Abstract:
This study examines the development of social capital in the
collaboration network of information systems (IS) scholars over a
33-year period (from 1980 to 2012). Using the co-authorship data from
six premier journals (MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research,
Journal of MIS, Journal of the AIS, European Journal of Information
Systems, and Information Systems Journal), we analyze the historical
trajectory of five aspects of the field's structural social capital:
network ties, network configuration, structural holes, growth, and
structural cohesion. Our results show that, as a scientific field, the
IS community has made significant progress in accumulating social
capital. The current IS collaboration network is also comparable in
several aspects with networks found in other business disciplines (e.g.,
management, finance, and marketing). Our study has several important
implications for the focus-versus-diversity debate in the IS field.
Based on our findings, we offer some recommendations as to how the IS
community can increase the field's social capital, and thereby
facilitate knowledge creation and innovation.

Abstract:
In industrialized nations, arthrosis is one of the most frequent causes
of physical disability and impaired quality of life in older people.
There are still no direct and curative therapies. In addition, the
causative mechanisms of this disease have not been sufficiently
deciphered and investigated so far.
For the present article, publications from 1900-2013 in the ISI Web of
Science were reviewed. Quantitative and qualitative aspects are taken
into account and are examined based on scientometric analysis methods.
The illustrations demonstrate the global structure of the research and
citation activity by Density Equalizing Map Projection. In addition, the
radar charts illustrate the bi- and multilateral research and
institutional cooperation.
On the basis of the search criteria, a total of 46,212 publications were
identified. Approximately 95 % of the publications date back to the last
25 years. In addition to the number of publications, the number of
citations has increased continuously. The analysis of the country
collaborations as well as the number of institutions indicates a
predominance of the United States. Most articles about arthrosis concern
the subject areas of rheumatology, orthopedics, and surgery.
This study provides the first comprehensive, scientometric findings and
illustrates corresponding representations of research activities,
geographical contexts as well as research cooperation. It shows a great
scientific interest, especially by North American and European
scientists. The steady growth of research is explained by the high
prevalence of arthrosis.

Abstract:
This article examines whether age, work-related, and family-related
predictors explain differences in the academic advancement of women and
men in Iceland. Survey data were analyzed by binary logistic regression.
The findings put that women climb the academic career ladder at a slower
pace than men. This finding puts one of the widely known excuses for the
underrepresentation of women in full professor positions into jeopardy,
namely that this is because of family responsibilities. Work-related
variables explain some of the gender differences. The study shows that
as promotion is slower among women, even if family-related variables are
not negatively affecting the odds, the academic pipeline is leaking
despite Iceland's reputation for being at the forefront where gender
equality issues are concerned.

Abstract:
The quest for historically impactful science and technology provides
invaluable insight into the innovation dynamics of human society, yet
many studies are limited to qualitative and small-scale approaches.
Here, we investigate scientific evolution through systematic analysis of
a massive corpus of digitized English texts between 1800 and 2008. Our
analysis reveals great predictability for long-prevailing scientific
concepts based on the levels of their prior usage. Interestingly, once a
threshold of early adoption rates is passed even slightly, scientific
concepts can exhibit sudden leaps in their eventual lifetimes. We
developed a mechanistic model to account for such results, indicating
that slowly-but-commonly adopted science and technology surprisingly
tend to have higher innate strength than fast-and-commonly adopted ones.
The model prediction for disciplines other than science was also well
verified. Our approach sheds light on unbiased and quantitative analysis
of scientific evolution in society, and may provide a useful basis for
policy-making.

Abstract:
History of science and philosophy of science have experienced a somewhat
turbulent relationship over the last century. At times it has been said
that philosophy needs history, or that history needs philosophy. Very
occasionally, something entirely new is said to need them both. Often,
however, their relationship is seen as little more than a marriage of
convenience. This article explores that marriage by analyzing the
citations of over 7,000 historians, philosophers, and sociologists of
science. The data reveal that a small but tightly-knit bridge does exist
between the disciplines, and raises suggestions about how to understand
that bridge in a more nuanced fashion.

Abstract:
Bibliographic data have been used for long time to evaluate scientific
publications. While the journal impact factor developed by Garfield
makes good visibility of publications in journals, the h-index in 2005
proposed by Hirsch has provided a simple measure of the perception of
cumulative publication productivity of a scientist. The magnitude of the
h-index of a researcher is dependent on the duration of the academic
career and the index is also determined by the completeness of the
database used to identify the publications and their citations. A major
problem of the h-index is that regardless of ranking, all authors of a
publication are taken into account in the creation of the h-index of
each author. This leads to the distortion of the h-index of authors with
a short publication career depending on the height of the h-index of
their experienced co-authors. Numerous modifications of the h-index have
been published, to compensate for its disadvantages. In 2006, an h-index
for journals was proposed. The h-index for journals is dependent on the
duration of the publication period and the quality of the used data
collection. This is shown for the h-index of the journal, "Physikalische
Medizin, Rehabilitationsmedizin, Kurortmedizin" which was determined
from the data collections World of Science (WoS), Scopus and Google
Scholar (GS). The value of the GS h-index was higher than the h-index in
Scopus and WoS. The average difference of h-index from WoS or Scopus was
0.53 +/- 1.12 in favour of Scopus. Another shortcoming of the h-index is
favouring journals with many articles to journals with a few
contributions. The Hirsch-index is a measure of the visibility of the
scientific productivity of authors or journals. The higher the h-index,
the more frequent an article of an author or magazine were perceived as
citation. A single publication can be identified on the basis of the
obtained total citations as belonging the Hirsch-index of an author or
journal.

Abstract:
Small fraction of scientists garnering the majority of citations. In
this paper, we compared "highly-cited scientists" from four disciplines
with random-but-matched scientists from the same institution, same
domain and with the same title. We find that explorative research is
curvilinearly and exploitive research positively related to the
occurrence of breakthrough ideas. Scientists' heterogeneity of prior
knowledge strengthens the curvilinear relations.

Abstract:
Online social communities often exhibit complex relationship structures,
ranging from close friends to political rivals. As a result, persons are
influenced by their friends and foes differently. Future network
applications can benefit from integrating these structural differences
in propagation schemes through socially aware sensors. In this paper, we
introduce a propagation model for such social sensor networks with
positive and negative relationship types. We tackle two main scenarios
based on this model. The first one is to minimize the end-to-end
propagation cost of influencing a target person in favor of an idea by
utilizing sensor observations about the relationship types in the
underlying social graph. The propagation cost is incurred by social and
physical network dynamics such as propagation delay, frequency of
interaction, the strength of friendship/foe ties or the *impact factor*
of the propagating idea. We next extend this problem by incorporating
the impact of message deterioration and ignorance, and by limiting the
number of persons influenced against the idea before reaching the
target. Second, we study the propagation problem while minimizing the
number of negatively influenced persons on the path, and provide
extensions to elaborate on the impact of network parameters. We
demonstrate our results in both an artificially created network and the
Epinions signed network topology. Our results show that judicious
propagation schemes lead to a significant reduction in the average cost
and complexity of network propagation compared to naive myopic
algorithms.

Abstract:
Bibliographic data have been used for long time to evaluate scientific
publications. While the journal *impact factor* developed by Garfield
makes good visibility of publications in journals, the h-index in 2005
proposed by Hirsch has provided a simple measure of the perception of
cumulative publication productivity of a scientist.
The higher the h-index,
the more frequent an article of an author or magazine were perceived as
citation. A single publication can be identified on the basis of the
obtained total citations as belonging the Hirsch-index of an author or
journal.

Abstract:
Over the past 50 years, there has been a significant increase in
published articles in the medical literature. The aesthetic surgery
literature is vast, consisting of a plethora of diverse articles written
by a myriad of illustrious authors. Despite this considerable archive of
published material, it remains nebulous as to which precise papers have
had the greatest impact on our specialty. The aim of our study was to
identify and analyse the characteristics of the top 50 papers in the
field of aesthetic surgery in the published literature.
The 50 most cited papers were identified in several surgical journals
through the Web of Science. The articles were ranked in order of the
number of citations received. These classic 50 papers were analysed for
article type, their journal distribution, level of evidence as well as
geographic and institutional origin.
Six journals contributed to the top 50 papers in aesthetic surgery with
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery contributing the most with 31 papers.
This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each
submission to which Evidence-Based Medicine rankings are applicable.
This excludes Review Articles, Book Reviews and manuscripts that concern
Basic Science, Animal Studies, Cadaver Studies and Experimental Studies.

Three Journal Similarity Metrics and Their Application to Biomedical *Journals*

Abstract:
In the present paper, we have created several novel journal similarity
metrics. The MeSH odds ratio measures the topical similarity of any pair
of journals, based on the major MeSH headings assigned to articles in
MEDLINE. The second metric employed the 2009 Author-ity author name
disambiguation dataset as a gold standard for estimating the author odds
ratio. This gives a straightforward, intuitive answer to the question:
Given two articles in PubMed that share the same author name (lastname,
first initial), how does knowing only the identity of the journals (in
which the articles were published) predict the relative likelihood that
they are written by the same person vs. different persons? The article
pair odds ratio detects the tendency of authors to publish repeatedly in
the same journal, as well as in specific pairs of journals. The metrics
can be applied not only to estimate the similarity of a pair of
journals, but to provide novel profiles of individual journals as well.
For example, for each journal, one can define the MeSH cloud as the
number of other journals that are topically more similar to it than
expected by chance, and the author cloud as the number of other journals
that share more authors than expected by chance. These metrics for
journal pairs and individual journals have been provided in the form of
public datasets that can be readily studied and utilized by others.

High-Ranked Social Science Journal Articles Can Be Identified from Early *Citation* Information

Abstract:
Do citations accumulate too slowly in the social sciences to be used to
assess the quality of recent articles? I investigate whether this is the
case using citation data for all articles in economics and political
science published in 2006 and indexed in the Web of Science. I find that
citations in the first two years after publication explain more than
half of the variation in cumulative citations received over a longer
period. Journal impact factors improve the correlation between the
predicted and actual future ranks of journal articles when using
citation data from 2006 alone but the effect declines sharply
thereafter. Finally, more than half of the papers in the top 20% in 2012
were already in the top 20% in the year of publication (2006).

Abstract:
In this paper we present an analysis of all the research papers
published on journals registered in the Web of Science, with the phrase
"solar energy" in its title, abstract or keywords that have at least one
author with address in Ibero-America. We present the results of citation
mining applied to all such records published between 2002 and 2012. This
analysis characterizes the behavior of the scientific production on
solar energy in the most prolific countries in this region. (C) 2014 The

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to test the classic aphorism attributed
to Isaac Newton as who has seen farther, that is because he stood on the
shoulders of giants. We test the aphorism by investigating academic
research in social science, including economics & business, social
sciences general, and psychiatry/psychology. We first argue that if an
article is developed on a previous work then some articles relating to
this work should be also cited. Then we show that academic breakthrough
is more likely to happen, if it is developed on highly cited articles,
which is defined as the top 1% articles based on citations. Moreover, we
show that citing highly cited articles but not developed on them do not
help academic breakthrough.
