Abstract:
Background: Many biomedical publications refer to data obtained from
collections of biosamples. Sharing such bioresources (biological
samples, data, and databases) is paramount for the present governance of
research. Recognition of the effort involved in generating, maintaining,
and sharing high quality bioresources is poorly organized, which does
not encourage sharing. At publication level, the recognition of such
resources is often neglected and/or highly heterogeneous. This is a true
handicap for the traceability of bioresource use. The aim of this
article is to propose, for the first time, a guideline for reporting
bioresource use in research articles, named CoBRA: Citation of
BioResources in journal Articles.
Methods: As standards for citing bioresources are still lacking, the
members of the journal editors subgroup of the Bioresource Research
Impact Factor (BRIF) initiative developed a standardized and appropriate
citation scheme for such resources by informing stakeholders about the
subject and raising awareness among scientists and in science editors'
networks, mapping this topic among other relevant initiatives, promoting
actions addressed to stakeholders, launching surveys, and organizing
focused workshops.
Results: The European Association of Science Editors has adopted BRIF's
suggestion to incorporate statements on biobanks in the Methods section
of their guidelines. The BRIF subgroup agreed upon a proposed citation
system: each individual bioresource that is used to perform a study and
that is mentioned in the Methods section should be cited as an
individual "reference [BIORESOURCE]" according to a delineated format.
The EQUATOR (Enhancing the QUAlity and Transparency Of health Research)
network mentioned the proposed reporting guideline in their "guidelines
under development" section.
Conclusions: Evaluating bioresources' use and impact requires that
publications accurately cite such resources. Adopting the standard
citation scheme described here will improve the quality of bioresource
reporting and will allow their traceability in scientific publications,
thus increasing the recognition of bioresources' value and relevance to
research.

Abstract:
An increasing number of healthcare systems allow people to monitor
behavior and provide feedback on health and wellness. Most applications,
however, only offer feedback on behavior in form of visualization and
data summaries. This paper presents a different approach-called impact
factor analysis-in which machine learning techniques are used to infer
the progression of a primary health parameter and then apply parameter
ranking to investigate which behavioral data have the highest 'impact'
on health. We have applied this approach to improve the MONARCA personal
health application for patients suffering from bipolar disorder. In the
MONARCA system, patients report their daily mood score and by analyzing
self-reported and automatically sensed behavioral data with this mood
score, the system is able to identify the impact of different behavior
on the patient's mood. We report from a study involving ten bipolar
patients, in which we were able to estimate mood values with an average
mean absolute error of 0.5. This was used to rank the behavior
parameters whose variations indicate changes in the mental state. The
rankings acquired from our algorithms correspond to the patients'
rankings, identifying physical activity and sleep as the highest impact
parameters. These results revealed the feasibility of identifying
behavioral impact factors. This data analysis motivated us to design an
impact factor inference engine as part of the MONARCA system. To our
knowledge, this is a novel approach in monitoring and control of mental
illness, and we argue that the impact factor analysis can be useful in
the design of other health and wellness systems.

Abstract:
Background: Dissemination of research findings in the scientific
community is reflected by the citation count. Our objective was to
investigate the relative citation impact of vascular research studies
and identify potential predictors of increased citation rates.
Methods: Articles published in leading journals of vascular and general
surgery (Journal of Vascular Surgery, European Journal of Vascular and
Endovascular Surgery, Journal of Endovascular Therapy, Annals of
Vascular Surgery and Annals of Surgery, British Journal of Surgery,
Journal of the American College of Surgeons, and JAMA Surgery) during a
4-month period were identified through electronic databases. Variables
potentially associated with increased citation rates, including subject,
design, title characteristics, article length, bibliographic references,
authorship, geographic distribution, interdisciplinary collaboration,
article access, and funding, were assessed in univariate and multiple
linear regression models through December 2012.
Results: A total of 226 articles with a total number of 4,605 citations
were identified. Univariate analysis revealed that endovascular-related
studies, study design, studies reporting design in the title, long
articles, and studies with high number of references were associated
with higher citation rates. On multivariate analysis, 3 variables were
found to independently predict the number of citations: study subject
(endovascular-related studies; regression coefficient [95% confidence
interval], 0.474 [0.240-0.708]; P < 0.001); study design (randomized
controlled trial; regression coefficient [95% confidence interval],
0.575 [0.145-1.005]; P = 0.009); and article length (number of pages;
regression coefficient [95% confidence interval], 0.069 [0.016-0.123];
P=0.011).
Conclusions: Authors involved in vascular research may enhance the
impact of their work by embarking on research strategies of high
methodologic quality and pursuing work related with new technologies and
evolving endovascular therapies.

Abstract:
The present paper extends the literature investigating key drivers
leading certain patents to exert a stronger influence on the subsequent
technological developments (inventions) than other ones. We investigated
six key determinants, as (i) the use of scientific knowledge, (ii) the
breadth of the technological base, (iii) the existence of collaboration
in patent development, (iv) the number of claims, (v) the scope, and
(vi) the novelty, and how the effect of these determinants varies when
patent influence as measured by the number of forward citations the
patent received is distinguished as within and across the industrial and
organizational boundaries. We conducted an empirical analysis on a
sample of 5671 patents granted to 293 US biotechnology firms from 1976
to 2003. Results reveal that the contribution of the determinants to
patent influence differs across the domains that are identified by the
industrial and organizational boundaries. Findings, for example, show
that the use of scientific knowledge negatively affects patent influence
outside the biotechnology industry, while it positively contributes to
make a patent more relevant for the assignee's subsequent technological
developments. In addition, the broader the scope of a patent the higher
the number of citations the patent receives from subsequent
non-biotechnology patents. This relationship is inverted U-shaped when
considering the influence of a patent on inventions granted to other
organizations than the patent's assignee. Finally, the novelty of a
patent is inverted-U related with the influence the patent exerts on the
subsequent inventions granted across the industrial and organizational
boundaries. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
Objectives: To assess HIV/AIDS research productivity in the 27 countries
of the European Union (EU), and the structural level factors associated
with levels of HIV/AIDS research productivity.
Methods: A bibliometric analysis was conducted with systematic search
methods used to locate HIV/AIDS research publications (period of 1
January 2002 to 31 December 2011; search databases: MEDLINE (Ovid,
PubMed), EMBASE, ISI-Thomson Web of Science; no language restrictions).
The publication rate (number of HIV/AIDS research publications per
million population in 10 years) and the rate of articles published in
HIV/AIDS journals and selected journals with moderate to very high (IF
>= 3) 5-year impact factors were used as markers for HIV research
productivity. A negative binomial regression model was fitted to assess
the impact of structural level factors (sociodemographic, health, HIV
prevalence and research/development indicators) associated with the
variation in HIV research productivity.
Results: The total numbers of HIV/AIDS research publications in
2002-2011 by country ranged from 7 to 9128 (median 319). The median
publication rate (per million population in 10 years) was 45 (range
5-150) for all publications. Across all countries, 16% of the HIV/AIDS
research was published in HIV/AIDS journals and 7% in selected journals
with IF >= 3. Indicators describing economic (gross domestic product),
demographic (size of the population) and epidemiological (HIV
prevalence) conditions as well as overall scientific activity (total
research output) in a country were positively associated with HIV
research productivity.
Conclusions: HIV research productivity varies noticeably across EU
countries, and this variation is associated with recognisable structural
factors.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE. There is evidence in academic medicine that the number of
authors per paper has increased over time. The goal of this study was to
quantitatively analyze authorship trends in the field of radiology over
20 years.
MATERIALS AND METHODS. A search of the National Library of Medicine
MEDLINE database was conducted to identify articles published by
radiology departments between 1991 and 2012. Country of origin, article
study design, and journal impact factor were recorded. The increase in
number of authors per paper was assessed by linear and nonlinear
regression. Pearson correlation was used to assess the relation between
journal impact factor and number of authors.
RESULTS. A total of 142,576 articles and 699,257 authors were identified
during the study period. The mean number of authors per paper displayed
linear growth from 3.9 to 5.7 (p < 0.0001). The proportion of single
authors declined from 11% in 1991 to 4.4% in 2012. The number of
clinical trials increased in a linear pattern, review articles in an
exponential pattern, and case reports in a logistic pattern (p < 0.0001
for each). Countries with the highest number of authors per paper were
Japan, Italy, and Germany. The number of articles funded by the U. S.
National Institutes of Health (NIH) displayed exponential growth and of
non-NIH- funded articles displayed linear growth (p < 0.0001 for each).
A negligible relation was observed between journal impact factor and
number of authors (Pearson r = 0.1066).
CONCLUSION. Radiology has had a steady increase in mean number of
authors per paper since the early 1990s that has varied by study design.
The increase is probably multifactorial and includes components of
author inflation and increasing complexity of research. Findings support
the need for reemphasis of authorship criteria to preserve authorship
value and accountability.

Abstract:
The 5,320 top cited articles published between 1902 and 2010 in
thermodynamic field were identified and characterized using Science
Citation Index Expanded. The analyzed aspects covered characteristics of
languages, publication years, Web of Science categories, journals,
countries/territories, institutions, and authors. These articles were
cited a mean number of 210, ranging from 110 to 399 times, with most of
the articles in the 1990s and 2000s. Journal of the American Chemical
Society was the most productive journal, followed by Journal of Chemical
Physics, and Physical Review Letters in 686 journals. Three topmost
categories of the 130 Web of Science categories were multidisciplinary
chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology, and physical chemistry.
The top cited articles originated from 1,936 institutions of 63
countries. Eight industrial countries: the USA, the UK, Germany, France,
Canada, Japan, Italy, and Russia, took the lead with an overwhelming
majority (87%), especially about three fifths for the USA. University of
California, Harvard University, and Massachusetts Institution of
Technology all from the USA led all the institutions. K.S. Pitzer, P.J.
Flory (Nobel laureate), and P.A. Kollman advanced the development of
thermodynamic field. Moreover, the most influential articles in the
history and in the latest year with their citation life cycles were
examined to provide some hints for research focuses and trends. Wigner
function has been attractive and will probably continue to be popular in
the thermodynamic field. Some emerging concerning related to frequency
scale factors, OPLS all-atom force field, entanglement between two or
more quantum objects, and some softwares including VAMP, NMRPipe,
GRASP2, AutoDock, DMol(3), and Maxent are likely to receive more
attention in the near future.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND Modern immunologic therapies targeting genetic mutations have
created a renewed interest in melanoma research, and this is reflected
in the increasing number of published works.
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to identify the top 100 most
cited articles in melanoma and to examine the characteristics of each
individual article.
METHODS Using an electronic database through the Web of Science, we were
able to determine the 22 journals that contributed to the 100 most cited
articles in melanoma.
RESULTS Each article was examined individually looking at
characteristics such as subject matter, article type, country of origin,
institution, authorship, and year of publication. The New England
Journal of Medicine contributed the most articles to the top 100 with 20
articles, whereas the most cited article originated from the Archives of
Surgery and has been cited 2,384 times. The United States produced 74%
of the top 100 articles, and the most prolific institution was the
National Cancer Institute in Maryland with 18 articles.
CONCLUSION This study has identified the most significant contributions
to melanoma research over the past 63 years and identifies many
important scientific breakthroughs and landmarks that have occurred
during this time.

Abstract:
We study a resource utilization scenario characterized by intrinsic
fitness. To describe the growth and organization of different cities, we
consider a model for resource utilization where many restaurants
compete, as in a game, to attract customers using an iterative learning
process. Results for the case of restaurants with uniform fitness are
reported. When fitness is uniformly distributed, it gives rise to a Zipf
law for the number of customers. We perform an exact calculation for the
utilization fraction for the case when choices are made independent of
fitness. A variant of the model is also introduced where the fitness can
be treated as an ability to stay in the business. When a restaurant
loses customers, its fitness is replaced by a random fitness. The steady
state fitness distribution is characterized by a power law, while the
distribution of the number of customers still follows the Zipf law,
implying the robustness of the model. Our model serves as a paradigm for
the emergence of Zipf law in city size distribution.

Abstract:
Quantity and quality dimensions of research performance using various
indicators are measuring by applying different research performance
evaluation approaches. Metrics/indices play an essential role for peer
based, metrics based or hybrid approaches. The potential use of new
research performance indices like h and h-type indices is the hottest
topic among scientometricians and policy makers. A range of
contradictory views and tensions have arisen regarding the use of
metrics or peer review process and potentialities of the use of new
indices. This review study is based on the similarities and
contradictory concerns that are raised in policy level, empirical and
point of views studies about RPE approaches, often used metrics and most
noted development named h-index.

Abstract:
Citation is a foundational dimension of human language and social life.
Citational practices attribute utterances to distinct speakers, beings,
or texts. They also connect temporalities, joining past, present, and
future discourses, documents, and performance practices. In so doing,
citational practices play a pivotal role in linking particular
articulations of subjectivity to wider formations of cultural knowledge
and authority. We explore how this linkage operates via production
formats, participant structures, genre conventions, and ideologies of
personhood. We then consider approaches to citation in the domain of
legal discourse, an arena that relies on specific, patterned forms of
citation that are historically rooted, institutionally perpetuated, and
subjectively reenacted.

Abstract:
The recently-introduced OM3 aggregation operators fulfill three
appealing properties: they are simultaneously minitive, maxitive, and
modular. Among the instances of OM3 operators we find e.g. OWMax and
OWMin operators, the famous Hirsch h-index and all its natural
generalizations. In this paper the basic axiomatic and probabilistic
properties of extended, i.e. in an arity-dependent setting, OM3
aggregation operators are studied. We illustrate the difficulties one is
inevitably faced with when trying to combine the quality and quantity of
numeric items into a single number. The discussion on such aggregation
methods is particularly important in the information resources producers
assessment problem, which aims to reduce the negative effects of
information overload. It turns out that the Hirsch-like indices of
impact do not fulfill a set of very important properties, which puts the
sensibility of their practical usage into question. Moreover, thanks to
the probabilistic analysis of the operators in an i.i.d. model, we may
better understand the relationship between the aggregated items' quality
and their producers' productivity. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights

Abstract:
A relevant question for the organization of large-scale research
assessments is whether bibliometric evaluation and informed peer review
yield similar results. In this paper, we draw on the experience of the
panel that evaluated Italian research in Economics, Management and
Statistics during the national assessment exercise (VQR) relative to the
period 2004-2010. We exploit the unique opportunity of studying a sample
of 590 journal articles randomly drawn from a population of 5681 journal
articles (out of nearly 12,000 journal and non-journal publications),
which the panel evaluated both by bibliometric analysis and by informed
peer review. In the total sample we find fair to good agreement between
informed peer review and bibliometric analysis and absence of
statistical bias between the two. We then discuss the nature,
implications, and limitations of this correlation. (C) 2014 Elsevier

Abstract:
The significance of a computer-based approach in roadmapping processes
will increase in accordance with the ever-larger number of scientific
publications and enhanced computing technologies. This article proposes
a method to analyse chronological changes in research topics as observed
from proceedings papers and conference sessions using a text-mining
technique, which enables us to detect, identify', and analyse the
evolutionary process of emerging technologies in the many rapidly
growing research fields. Chronological networks of conference sessions
from World Wide Web conferences between 2002 and 2011 are used to
visualize the scientific and technical streams formed by the session
sequences. The chronological networks demonstrate the evolutionary
process of 'Social Networks', 'Monetization' and 'Semantic Analysis'
studies. In the evolutionary process of emerging web-based technology,
the convergent session nodes that recapitulate past research topics and
the divergent session nodes in the networks play significant roles in
promoting dynamic interactions among research topics. The proposed
method is distinctive in that it is prospective: the session titles
reflect future perspectives, including researchers' expectations for
pioneering new research fields within a scientific community. This
article also discusses the characteristics of a textual method for
scientific publication analysis in terms from the aspect coverage, data,
links and stability. (C) 2014 Elsevier-Inc.

Conclusions: HIV research productivity varies noticeably across EU
countries, and this variation is associated with recognisable structural
factors.

Abstract:
This research examines criteria for evaluating the impact of
publications in open access and the influence of this philosophy in
enhancing the impact in scientific publications. The research corpus
consisted of documents listed in the Open Access Citation Advantage
annotated bibliography. Several conclusions can be drawn from results:
a) The adoption or acceptance of open access publications becomes a
phenomenon associated with the scientific culture of each discipline; b)
The scientific culture and the characteristics of the discipline also
determine how citations are made: in this case it is the degree of
knowledge obsolescence in each subject driving this process; c)
Citations are more closely linked to the quality of the content of the
publication rather than to degree of accessibility; and d) The alleged
visibility of open access publications, at least with regard to the
corpus of this research, cannot be strongly linked to the increased
impact of publications.

Abstract:
BackgroundProfessional skills are critical in engineering practice.
Differing definitions and lack of empirical evidence make it difficult
to help students develop these skills.
PurposeThis research seeks to understand what it means to have
professional skills in an industrially situated capstone project and, by
extension, in engineering. We also aim to demonstrate the influence on
those skills of the feedback provided to students.
Design/MethodOur ethnographic study employs discourse analysis to focus
on professional skills. Using the construct of communities of practice,
we describe and analyze conversations between a coach and four student
teams as the coach provided feedback, and conversations among students
as they worked in teams.
ResultsApproximately half the discussion addressed the following
professional skills: communication, documentation, teamwork, the
economic impact of engineering solutions, and project management.
Development of professional skills promotes students' enculturation into
both a disciplinary community (chemical engineering) and an industrial
community (semiconductor industry). Feedback on professional skills
generally was given in the context of technical aspects, and we found an
interplay between the teams' participation in professional skills
activities and participation in more technical activities.
ConclusionsParticipation in engineering design projects provides
students opportunities to practice both professional and technical
skills. Feedback on professional skills helps students recognize how to
simultaneously represent themselves as legitimate members of multiple
communities of practice.
