Abstract:
This paper seeks to advance the theory and practice of the dynamics of
complex networks in relation to direct and indirect citations. It
applies social network analysis (SNA) and the ordered weighted averaging
operator (OWA) to study a patent citations network. So far the SNA
studies investigating long chains of patents citations have rarely been
undertaken and the importance of a node in a network has been associated
mostly with its number of direct ties. In this research OWA is used to
analyse complex networks, assess the role of indirect ties, and provide
guidance to reduce complexity for decision makers and analysts. An
empirical example of a set of European patents published in 2000 in the
renewable energy industry is provided to show the usefulness of the
proposed approach for the preference ranking of patent citations. Crown

Abstract:
The difference between the inverse power function and the negative
exponential function is significant. The former suggests a complex
distribution, while the latter indicates a simple distribution. However,
the association of the power-law distribution with the exponential
distribution has been seldom researched. This paper is devoted to
exploring the relationships between exponential laws and power laws from
the angle of view of urban geography. Using mathematical derivation and
numerical experiments, I reveal that a power-law distribution can be
created through a semi-moving average process of an exponential
distribution. For the distributions defined in a one-dimension space
(e.g. Zipf's law), the power exponent is 1; while for those defined in a
two-dimension space (e.g. Clark's law), the power exponent is 2. The
findings of this study are as follows. First, the exponential
distributions suggest a hidden scaling, but the scaling exponents
suggest a Euclidean dimension. Second, special power-law distributions
can be derived from exponential distributions, but they differ from the
typical power-law distributions. Third, it is the real power-law
distributions that can be related with fractal dimension. This study
discloses an inherent link between simplicity and complexity. In
practice, maybe the result presented in this paper can be employed to
distinguish the real power laws from spurious power laws (e.g. the fake
Zipf distribution).

Abstract:
Objective: After introduction of epidural anesthesia (EA) in the early
20(th)century, it has become an essential technique in anesthesiology
and many physicians consider it the gold standard analgesic technique
for major surgeries. As EA has improved anesthesia methods dramatically
and there is no previous bibliometric study in this field, we aimed to
perform a scientometric analysis on this topic.
Design: Cross-sectional study
Setting: Mashad University of Medical Sciences, Iran
Subjects: Articles were retrieved from the Web of Science (ISI) from
1990 to 2013.
Intervention(s): The total number of published items was 4612;
subsequent analysis was performed on results considering published items
per year, country, funding agency, institution, journal, publication
language, and author and subject area.
Main Outcome Measure: The results were analyzed considering published
items per year, country, funding agency and institution, journal,
publication language and author.
Results: Additionally, subject areas under which the articles were
published were evaluated. The primary search yielded 4612 publications;
out of these 3200 (69.38%) were original articles. More than half of
articles (2466) were published under "anesthesiology" subject. The USA
was the leading country in producing articles under this topic and
engaged highest collaboration rate with 64 collaborations.
Conclusion: It seems that there is an overall increase in total number
of articles, citations and highly cited articles about EA during these
two decades.

Abstract:
Background: When nurse education has moved away from a hospital based
apprenticeship to a higher education institutions and new EU legislature
enabled nurse workforce mobility, the term "competence" became an
important concept in nurse education and practice. However, there is
still a lot of confusion about its definition, how it should be assessed
and implemented and which competences does a contemporary nurse need.
Objectives: To find publishing patterns in the nursing competence
research literature production, focusing on publishing dynamics,
identifying prolific research entities, most cited papers, and
visualising the content of the research.
Design and Data Sources: A bibliometric analysis of 370 information
sources (288 original papers and 82 review articles) found in the Scopus
database using the search string "nursing competenc*" for the period
1981-2012 was conducted. The SciMago database was used to identify
country and source title ranks.
Methods: Common elements of bibliometric data were extracted from each
information source. Descriptive, correspondence and text analyses were
used on the retrieved bibliometric data.
Results: The production of research literature has a positive trend. The
research on nursing competences is being performed on all five
continents, however is not yet published in top journals. Most prolific
countries are the United States of America, the United Kingdom and
Australasia, and most prolific source titles are the Journal of clinical
nursing, the Journal of nursing education and Public health nursing. The
results confirmed the still persisting confusion in the definition of
the competence and the emergence of the need for defining new nursing
competences.
Conclusions: Study confirmed that there are still open questions in the
nursing competence research that will require actions on different
levels including policy makers, educators and practising nurses. (C)

Abstract:
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the changes in impact factors of
otorhinolaryngology journals over the past 15 years.
Method: Using the online edition of Journal Citation Reports, standard
(2-year) and 5-year impact factors were calculated for the leading 15
journals.
Results: The results were compared with the impact factors for 1998. The
average standard *impact factor* and 5-year *impact factor* increased by
2.72 and 2.05 fold respectively when compared with 1998. The average
2012 standard *impact factor* and 5-year *impact factor* were 1.82 and
1.99 respectively, reflecting a 9.3 per cent difference. The average
1998 standard *impact factor* and 5-year *impact factor* were 0.67 and
0.97 respectively, reflecting a 44.8 per cent difference. The Journal of
the Association for Research in Otolaryngology had the highest standard
and five-year impact factors.
Conclusion: These data may indicate changing clinical and research
interests within our field, as well as increased speed and ease with
which the internet has allowed citation. As a result, five-year
intervals may no longer be necessary to adequately gauge journal impact.

Abstract:
Objective: Human pluripotent stem cells are self-renewing cells with the
ability to differentiate into a variety of cells and are viewed to have
great potential in the field of regenerative medicine. Research in
pluripotent stem cells holds great promise for patient specific therapy
in various diseases. In this study, pluripotent stem cell articles
published from 1991 to 2012 were screened and retrieved from Science
Citation Index Expanded (SCI-EXPANDED).
Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study, the publication
trend, citation trends for top articles, distributions of journals and
Web of Science categories were analyzed. Five bibliometric indicators
including total articles, independent articles, collaborative articles,
first author articles, and corresponding author articles were applied to
compare publications between countries and institutions.
Results: The impact of top articles changed from year to year. Top cited
articles in previous publication years were not the same as recent
years. "Induced pluripotent stem cell (s)" and "embryonic stem cell (s)"
were the most used author keywords in pluripotent stem cell research. In
addition, the winner of the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine in
2012, Prof. Shinya Yamanaka, published four of the top ten most
frequently cited articles.
Conclusion: The comprehensive analysis of highly cited articles in the
stem cell field could identify milestones and important contributors,
giving a historic perspective on scientific progress.

Abstract:
Background & objectives: Tropical and vector borne diseases have always
been a challenge for the medical science and society and exerted high
impact on society in terms of financial, economical and psychological
relevance. Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is one of the tropical diseases
which is prevalent in under developing and developed countries. The
objective of this study is to analyze the literature published in the
area of filariasis research. The focus is to see the Indian contribution
and its impact in terms of global publication and share, citation
analysis and its impact, productive Indian institutions engaged in
filariasis research and their impact, international collaborative
research, productive journals, and highly cited papers published by
Indian authors.
Methods: The data for this study was obtained from Scopus, a
multidisciplinary database, for the period of forty years (1973-2012)
using key words lymphatic filariasis, elephantiasis, Wuchereria
bancrofti, Brugia malayi and Brugia timori available in the title,
abstract and key words fields. The citation count has been taken as the
number of citations scored by the papers since their publication. The
international collaboration by Indian authors in filariasis research has
been manually analyzed through author's affiliation field.
Results: The search strategy using key words yielded 13,598 articles on
different aspects of filariasis published during the forty years period.
Indian authors have published 1970 articles which is 14.49% of global
share, making it second highest productive country on filariasis
research. United States holds first rank with 2956 articles (21.74%
share). In terms of citation count, Indian research have quite good
impact and has been ranked third; and in terms of average citation per
paper it is far behind, while Ghana and Nigeria holds top two ranks.
Interpretation & conclusion: There have been continued efforts in
providing better facilities for research, though Indian filariasis
research has to go long way in order to remove the incidence of the
disease from Indian population and the results presented through this
study shall be helpful for stakeholders in framing policies in this
direction.

Abstract:
Background: Diabetes burden is a serious warning for urgent action plan
across the world. Knowledge production in this context could provide
evidences for more efficient interventions. Aimed to that, we quantify
the trend of diabetes research outputs of Middle East countries focusing
on the scientific publication numbers, citations, and international
collaboration. Materials and Methods: This scientometrics study was
performed based on the systematic analysis through three international
databases; ISI, PubMed, and Scopus from 1990 to 2012. International
collaboration of Middle East countries and citations was analyzed based
on Scopus. Diabetes' publications in Iran specifically were assessed,
and frequent used terms were mapped by VOSviewer software. Results: Over
23-year period, the number of diabetes publications and related
citations in Middle East countries had increasing trend. The number of
articles on diabetes in ISI, PubMed, and Scopus were respectively;
13,994, 11,336, and 20,707. Turkey, Israel, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and
Egypt have devoted the five top competition positions. In addition,
Israel, Turkey, and Iran were leading countries in citation analysis.
The most collaborative country with Middle East countries was USA and
within the region, the most collaborative country was Saudi Arabia. Iran
in all databases stands on third position and produced 12.7% of diabetes
publications within region. Regarding diabetes researches, the frequent
used terms in Iranian articles were "effect," "woman," and "metabolic
syndrome." Conclusion: Ascending trend of diabetes research outputs in
Middle East countries is appreciated but encouraging to strategic
planning for maintaining this trend, and more collaboration between
researchers is needed to regional health promotion.

Abstract:
This paper reports a bibliometric analysis (co-citation network
analysis) of 10 journals in the management of technology (MOT) field. As
well as introducing various bibliometric ideas, network analysis tools
identify and explore the concepts covered by the field and their
inter-relationships. Specific results from different levels of analysis
show the different dimensions of technology management:
Co-word terms identify themes
Journal co-citation network: linking to other disciplines
Co-citation network show concentrations of themes
The analysis shows that MOT has a bridging role in integrating ideas
from several distinct disciplines. This suggests that management and
strategy are central to MOT which essentially relates to the firm rather
than policy. Similarly we have a dual focus on capabilities, but can see
subtle differences in how we view these ideas, either through an inwards
looking lens to see how organisations function, or more outward to
understand context and change in landscapes.

Abstract:
Argument The scientific system is primarily differentiated into disciplines. While disciplines may be wide in scope and diverse in their research practices, they serve scientific communities that evaluate research and also grant recognition to what is published. The analysis of communication and publication practices within such a community hence allows us to shed light on the dynamics of this discipline. On the basis of an empirical analysis of Isis, we show how the process of discipline-building in history of science has led its practitioners to be socialized and sensitized in relatively strong intra-disciplinary terms - with minimal interdisciplinary openness.

Abstract:
This paper seeks to advance the theory and practice of the dynamics of complex networks in relation to direct and indirect citations. It applies social network analysis (SNA) and the ordered weighted averaging operator (OWA) to study a patent citations network. So far the SNA studies investigating long chains of patents citations have rarely been undertaken and the importance of a node in a network has been associated mostly with its number of direct ties. In this research OWA is used to analyse complex networks, assess the role of indirect ties, and provide guidance to reduce complexity for decision makers and analysts. An empirical example of a set of European patents published in 2000 in the renewable energy industry is provided to show the usefulness of the proposed approach for the preference ranking of patent citations.
