Abstract:
A Sleeping Beauty (SB) in science refers to a paper whose importance is
not recognized for several years after publication. Its citation history
exhibits a long hibernation period followed by a sudden spike of
popularity. Previous studies suggest a relative scarcity of SBs. The
reliability of this conclusion is, however, heavily dependent on
identification methods based on arbitrary threshold parameters for
sleeping time and number of citations, applied to small or
monodisciplinary bibliographic datasets. Here we present a systematic,
large-scale, and multidisciplinary analysis of the SB phenomenon in
science. We introduce a parameter-free measure that quantifies the
extent to which a specific paper can be considered an SB. We apply our
method to 22 million scientific papers published in all disciplines of
natural and social sciences over a time span longer than a century. Our
results reveal that the SB phenomenon is not exceptional. There is a
continuous spectrum of delayed recognition where both the hibernation
period and the awakening intensity are taken into account. Although many
cases of SBs can be identified by looking at monodisciplinary
bibliographic data, the SB phenomenon becomes much more apparent with
the analysis of multidisciplinary datasets, where we can observe many
examples of papers achieving delayed yet exceptional importance in
disciplines different from those where they were originally published.
Our analysis emphasizes a complex feature of citation dynamics that so
far has received little attention, and also provides empirical evidence
against the use of short-term citation metrics in the quantification of
scientific impact.

Abstract:
Knowing the degree and stage of a product's innovation is essential for
technological forecasting and beneficial for governments and firms that
want to come up with product promotion strategies and prioritize
investments. Bibliometric analysis has been widely used as a practical
tool to evaluate scientific activities. Although there were many
bibliometric-based attempts to model product innovation stages, there
have not been any trials that approach it from the standpoint of
uncertainty reduction in technological product innovation. This paper
suggests two hypotheses: 1) at a macro level, the year-to-year
difference in relative research volumes of each component decreases over
time as the uncertainty of a product decreases; and 2) at a micro level,
the year-to-year difference in relative research volumes of each
component is correlated with the technological life cycle of a product's
core component. In addition, we provide empirical evidence that supports
the hypotheses in the case study of mobile phones. From the evidence, we
conclude that bibliometric analysis using research papers can measure
the uncertainty in a product's technological innovation. (C) 2015

Abstract:
A "mega-journal" is a new type of scientific journal that publishes
freely accessible articles, which have been peer reviewed for scientific
trustworthiness, but leaves it to the readers to decide which articles
are of interest and importance to them. In the wake of the phenomenal
success of PLOS ONE, several other publishers have recently started
mega-journals. This article presents the evolution of mega-journals
since 2010 in terms of article publication rates. The fastest growth
seems to have ebbed out at around 35,000 annual articles for the 14
journals combined. Acceptance rates are in the range of 50-70%, and
speed of publication is around 3-5 months. Common features in
mega-journals are alternative impact metrics, easy reusability of
figures and data, post-publication discussions and portable reviews from
other journals.

Abstract:
Introduction: Bibliometric analysis is a quantitative method that can
evaluate publications related to a specific topic.
Methods: A PubMed database search was conducted from 2003 to 2012 using
the search term carotid AND stenos* as a part of the title or abstract.
Results: A total of 1590 articles were published in 329 different
journals. A total of 751 (47.2%) publications were original articles,
1501 (94.4%) were written in English, 153 (9.6%) received funding, 584
(36.7%) were published by the United States, and 673 (42.3%) resulted
from multidisciplinary collaboration. Of the original articles, 538
(71.6%) had retrospective design and 275 (36.6%) had sample size of <50.
Vascular surgery departments produced the most articles (n = 339,
21.3%), followed by radiology (n = 270, 17.0%), cardiology (n = 260,
16.4%), neurosurgery (n = 198, 12.5%), and neurology (n = 196, 12.3%).
Five major departments published only a small portion (5.1%-26.5%) of
articles in their own specialty journals.
Conclusion: The publication in journals across disciplines and
multidisciplinary collaboration are 2 peculiar characteristics of
research in this topic.

Abstract:
Scholarly impact is sometimes crudely gauged using the total number of
an author's citations as a stand-in for 'impact', the author's
hypothetical influence on other researchers, but the average citation
numbers per author vary greatly between disciplines. The detail of the
number of citations per publication is nowadays mapped in much more
detail on the Web, exposing certain empirical patterns within an
author's own publication record. This paper explores those patterns,
using the citation data from Google Scholar for a number of authors.

Abstract:
Understanding the relationship between scientific productivity and
research group size is important for deciding how science should be
funded. We have investigated the relationship between these variables in
the life sciences in the United Kingdom using data from 398 principle
investigators (PIs). We show that three measures of productivity, the
number of publications, the impact factor of the journals in which
papers are published and the number of citations, are all positively
correlated to group size, although they all show a pattern of
diminishing returns-doubling group size leads to less than a doubling in
productivity. The relationships for the impact factor and the number of
citations are extremely weak. Our analyses suggest that an increase in
productivity will be achieved by funding more PIs with small research
groups, unless the cost of employing post-docs and PhD students is less
than 20% the cost of a PI. We also provide evidence that post-docs are
more productive than PhD students both in terms of the number of papers
they produce and where those papers are published.

A Descriptive and Historical Review of Bibliometrics with Applications to Medical Sciences

Abstract:
The discipline of bibliometrics involves the application of mathematical
and statistical methods to scholarly publications. The first attempts at
systematic data collection were provided by Alfred Lotka and Samuel
Bradford, who subsequently established the foundational laws of
bibliometrics. Eugene Garfield ushered in the modern era of
bibliometrics with the routine use of citation analysis and systematized
processing. Key elements of bibliometric analysis include database
coverage, consistency and accuracy of the data, data fields, search
options, and analysis and use of metrics. A number of bibliometric
applications are currently being used in medical science and health
care. Bibliometric parameters and indexes may be increasingly used by
grant funding sources as measures of research success. Universities may
build benchmarking standards from bibliometric data to determine
academic achievement through promotion and tenure guidelines in the
future. This article reviews the history, definition, laws, and elements
of bibliometric principles and provides examples of bibliometric
applications to the broader health care community. To accomplish this,
the Medline (1966-2014) and Web of Science (1945-2014) databases were
searched to identify relevant articles; select articles were also
cross-referenced. Articles selected were those that provided background,
history, descriptive analysis, and application of bibliometric
principles and metrics to medical science and health care. No attempt
was made to cover all areas exhaustively; rather, key articles were
chosen that illustrate bibliometric concepts and enhance the reader's
knowledge. It is important that faculty and researchers understand the
limitations and appropriate uses of bibliometric data. Bibliometrics has
considerable potential as a research area for health care scientists and
practitioners that can be used to discover new information about
academic trends, pharmacotherapy, disease, and broader health sciences
trends.

Abstract:
This paper studies the impact of university-industry collaboration on
academic research output. We analyze the channels through which the
degree of industry collaboration may be affecting research output. We
exploit a unique longitudinal dataset on all the researchers in all the
engineering departments of 40 major universities in the UK for the last
20 years. We use an innovative measure of collaboration based on the
fraction of public research grants that include industry partners. Our
empirical findings corroborate that the relationship between
collaboration degree and publication rates is curvilinear, and shed some
light on the selection mechanisms at work. Our results are robust to
several econometric methods, measures of research output, and subsamples
of academics. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
