Abstract:
We aim to develop a meaningful single-source reference for management
and organization scholars interested in using bibliometric methods for
mapping research specialties. Such methods introduce a measure of
objectivity into the evaluation of scientific literature and hold the
potential to increase rigor and mitigate researcher bias in reviews of
scientific literature by aggregating the opinions of multiple scholars
working in the field. We introduce the bibliometric methods of citation
analysis, co-citation analysis, bibliographical coupling, co-author
analysis, and co-word analysis and present a workflow for conducting
bibliometric studies with guidelines for researchers. We envision that
bibliometric methods will complement meta-analysis and qualitative
structured literature reviews as a method for reviewing and evaluating
scientific literature. To demonstrate bibliometric methods, we performed
a citation and co-citation analysis to map the intellectual structure of
the Organizational Research Methods journal.

Abstract:
As a process of knowledge manufacture, research activities are
interpretable from the well-known economic perspectives of production
and consumption. We therefore aim to investigate the contents of
institutes' research portfolio from a knowledge production and
consumption perspective. A Hirsch-type-index and mean reference age
serve as indicators of knowledge activity. Based on both indicators, we
divide research institutes into four categories. This approach is
applied to Government-funded Research Institutes (GRIs) in Korea that
are dedicated to major disciplines within science and technology. We
recognize GRIs' contribution to the development in the characteristic
areas. A tailored enhancement strategy is discussed for promising GRIs
to improve their knowledge activity. Our results have implications for
GRIs' research portfolio management. In terms of R&D portfolio
constitution, we reveal that Korean GRIs' research themes concentrate on
the strategic research such as chemistry, information and communications
technology, and semiconductors. We also point out the possible fragility
of the national R&D system, as national leading technologies are reliant
on a few giant institutes.

Abstract:
Bibliometric parameters have become an important part of modern
assessment of academic productivity. These parameters exist for the
purpose of evaluating authors (publication count, citation count,
h-index, m-quotient, h(c)-index, epsilon-index, g-index, i-10 [i-n]
index) and journals (impact factor, Eigenfactor, article influence
score, SC-Imago journal rank, source-normalized impact per paper).
Although in recent years there has been a proliferation of bibliometric
parameters, the true meaning and appropriate use of these parameters is
generally not well understood. Effective use of existing and emerging
bibliometric tools can aid in assessment of academic productivity,
including readiness for promotions and other awards. However, if not
properly understood, the data can be misinterpreted and may be subject
to manipulation. Familiarity with bibliometric parameters will aid in
their effective implementation in the review of authors-whether
individuals or groups-and journals, as well as their possible use in the
promotions review process, maximizing the effectiveness of bibliometric
analysis. (C) RSNA, 2015 . radiographics.rsna.org

Abstract:
This paper presents a new approach to building legal citation
classification systems. Our approach is based on Ripple-down Rules
(RDA), an efficient knowledge acquisition methodology. The main
contributions of the paper (over existing expert-systems approaches) are
extensions to the traditional RDR approach introducing new automatic
methods to assist in the creation of rules: using the available dataset
to provide performance estimates and relevant examples, automatically
suggesting and validating synonyms, re-using exceptions in different
portions of the knowledge base. We compare our system LEXA with baseline
machine learning techniques. LEXA obtains better results both in clean
and noisy subsets of our corpus. Compared to machine learning
approaches, LEXA also has other advantages such as supporting continuous
extension of the rule base, and the opportunity to proceed without an
annotated data set and to validate class labels while building rules.

Abstract:
Many open access journals have a reputation for being of low quality and
being dishonest with regard to peer review and publishing costs. Such
journals are labeled predatory journals. This study examines author
profiles for some of these predatory journals as well as for groups of
more well-recognized open access journals. We collect and analyze the
publication record, citation count, and geographic location of authors
from the various groups of journals. Statistical analyses verify that
each group of journals has a distinct author population. Those who
publish in predatory journals are, for the most part, young and
inexperienced researchers from developing countries. We believe that
economic and sociocultural conditions in these developing countries have
contributed to the differences found in authorship between predatory and
nonpredatory journals.

Abstract:
This is a publisher ranking study based on a citation data grant from
Elsevier, specifically, book titles cited in Scopus history journals
(2007-2011) and matching metadata from WorldCat (R) (i.e., OCLC numbers,
ISBN codes, publisher records, and library holding counts). Using both
resources, we have created a unique relational database designed to
compare citation counts to books with international library holdings or
libcitations for scholarly book publishers. First, we construct a
ranking of the top 500 publishers and explore descriptive statistics at
the level of publisher type (university, commercial, other) and country
of origin. We then identify the top 50 university presses and commercial
houses based on total citations and mean citations per book (CPB). In a
third analysis, we present a map of directed citation links between
journals and book publishers. American and British presses/publishing
houses tend to dominate the work of library collection managers and
citing scholars; however, a number of specialist publishers from Europe
are included. Distinct clusters from the directed citation map indicate
a certain degree of regionalism and subject specialization, where some
journals produced in languages other than English tend to cite books
published by the same parent press. Bibliometric rankings convey only a
small part of how the actual structure of the publishing field has
evolved; hence, challenges lie ahead for developers of new citation
indices for books and bibliometricians interested in measuring book and
publisher impacts.

Abstract:
Citation analysis has been widely used to evaluate the impact of
articles in medical and surgical specialties. Although China is the most
populous country in the world, and although more than 50,000 orthopaedic
surgeons practice there, to our knowledge no formal citation analysis of
Chinese orthopaedic articles has been performed.
We identified the 50 most-cited orthopaedic articles from mainland China
and evaluated these articles in terms of their language of publication,
source journals, and topics.
Science Citation Index Expanded was searched in July 31, 2014 for
citations of articles published in 70 selected journals since the
inception of the database. The 50 most-cited orthopaedic articles
originating in mainland China were identified. Basic information,
including title, authors, year of publication, article type, journal in
which the work was published, city, institution, number of citations,
decade published, and topic or subspecialty of the research were
recorded.
The number of citations for the top 50 papers ranged from 181 to 31
(mean, 52). These articles were published between 1981 and 2010. The
decade of 2000 to 2009 was the most prolific, with 36 of the top 50
articles published during this time. All articles were written in
English and they were published in a total of 16 journals. The journal
Spine published the largest number of articles (12), followed by
Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research (A (R)) (seven). The journal
Lancet had the highest *impact factor* (39.207 for 2013) among any of
the journals that published articles we identified. The top 50 articles
originated mainly from Beijing (16) and Shanghai (12), with basic
research being the focus of the majority (27 of 50; 54%); the remaining
were clinical studies. Bone was the most-investigated topic in basic
research; the spine was the most-common topic among the identified
clinical studies.
The 50 most-cited articles that we identified should be considered
influential, although a large gap remains between mainland China and the
global orthopaedic community in terms of citations per article.
Nevertheless, insofar as the most-recent decade of our survey generated
the most articles in this top-50 list, we would characterize mainland
China's effect on musculoskeletal research as increasing, and as funding
increases to programs in mainland China, we anticipate this trend will
continue in the future.

Abstract:
The BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) are
notable for their increasing participation in science and technology.
The governments of these countries have been boosting their investments
in research and development to become part of the group of nations doing
research at a world-class level. This study investigates the development
of the BRICS countries in the domain of top-cited papers (top 10% and 1%
most frequently cited papers) between 1990 and 2010. To assess the
extent to which these countries have become important players at the top
level, we compare the BRICS countries with the top-performing countries
worldwide. As the analyses of the (annual) growth rates show, with the
exception of Russia, the BRICS countries have increased their output in
terms of most frequently cited papers at a higher rate than the
top-cited countries worldwide. By way of additional analysis, we
generate coauthorship networks among authors of highly cited papers for
4 time points to view changes in BRICS participation (1995, 2000, 2005,
and 2010). Here, the results show that all BRICS countries succeeded in
becoming part of this network, whereby the Chinese collaboration
activities focus on the US.

Abstract:
This paper analyses citations of journal articles to find out key
bibliographic factors that have an effect on citation. It helps to
understand the degree of measurable factors which affects to *impact
factor* by scale and correlation analysis between each factors. It
ensures moderating variables work to increase *impact factor* as a
moderating effect. Five factors can be measured-the number of authors,
the number of affiliations, the number of references, the number of
pages, and the number of keywords-were selected. We found that five
bibliographic factors have positive effects on citation. All of common
bibliographic items, such as subject, nation, year showed general
effects in the analysis to examine if the moderating variables increase
or decrease the effects on bibliographic factors.

Abstract:
It is traditionally assumed that Zipf's law implies the power-law growth
of the number of different elements with the total number of elements in
a system-the so-called Heaps' law. We show that a careful definition of
Zipf's law leads to the violation of Heaps' law in random systems, with
growth curves that have a convex shape in log-log scale. These curves
fulfill universal data collapse that only depends on the value of Zipf's
exponent. We observe that real books behave very much in the same way as
random systems, despite the presence of burstiness in word occurrence.
We advance an explanation for this unexpected correspondence.

Abstract:
Objective: To assess Australian health and medical research (HMR)
investment returns by measuring the trends in HMR expenditure and PubMed
publications by Australian authors. Methods: Bibliometric analysis
collating Australian HMR expenditure reported by the Australian
Institute of Health and Welfare and Australian HMR publications indexed
in PubMed. Similar methods were applied to data from the United Kingdom
and New Zealand. Results: From financial year 2000/01 through 2011/12,
HMR investment increased by 232% from $1.49 to $4.94 billion (current
prices adjusted for inflation), while PubMed publications increased by
123% from 10,696 to 23,818. The average HMR investment required for a
single PubMed publication rose by 49% from $139,304 in 2000/01 to
$207,364 in 2011/12. Quality analyses showed an increase in systematic
reviews, cohort studies and clinical trials, and a decrease in
publications in PubMed's core clinical journal collection. Comparisons
with New Zealand and the United Kingdom showed that Australia has had
the greatest overall percentage increase in gross publication numbers
and publications per capita. Conclusions: Our analyses confirm that
increased HMR expenditure is associated with an increase in HMR
publications in PubMed. Implications: Tracking HMR investment outcomes
using this method could be useful for future policy and funding
decisions at a federal and specific institution level.

Abstract:
The range and types of performance metrics has recently proliferated in
academic settings, with bibliometric indicators being particularly
visible examples. One field that has traditionally been hospitable
towards such indicators is biomedicine. Here the relative merits of
bibliometrics are widely discussed, with debates often portraying them
as heroes or villains. Despite a plethora of controversies, one of the
most widely used indicators in this field is said to be the Journal
*Impact Factor* (JIF). In this article we argue that much of the current
debates around researchers' uses of the JIF in biomedicine can be
classed as 'folk theories': explanatory accounts told among a community
that seldom (if ever) get systematically checked. Such accounts rarely
disclose how knowledge production itself becomes more-or-less
consolidated around the JIF. Using ethnographic materials from different
research sites in Dutch University Medical Centers, this article sheds
new empirical and theoretical light on how performance metrics variously
shape biomedical research on the 'shop floor.' Our detailed analysis
underscores a need for further research into the constitutive effects of
evaluative metrics.

Abstract:
Neurogenic bladder is a dysfunction of the lower urinary tract caused by
nervous system disorder. We investigated the trends in publication of
articles under the topic "neurogenic bladder" using bibliometric
analysis. Articles on neurogenic bladder, published between 1995 and
2014, were retrieved from the ISI Web of Science citation database. We
analyzed the search results for authors, countries, institutions,
journals, and top-cited papers. A total of 1,904 articles were
retrieved. There was a small increase in the number of articles on
neurogenic bladder from 1995 (n = 43) to 2014 (n = 117). The USA was the
leading country in the total number of articles (n = 598). However, the
number of publications from China has rapidly increased, and China was
ranked second in 2014. Emmanuel Chartier-Kastler (n = 65) was the most
productive author, and University of Paris VI (Paris 6) (n = 61) was the
most productive institution. The Journal of Urology published the
greatest number of articles on this topic (n = 285). Articles on
neurogenic bladder were often published in a professional journal under
the category Urology & Nephrology, Neurosciences & Neurology, or
Rehabilitation. Visualization analysis based on co-citation networks was
conducted using CiteSpace III. Visualization analysis revealed that the
hot spots in neurogenic bladder were botulinum toxin-A, prazosin,
bethanechol, and afferent pathways. These findings provide new insight
into the publication trends and hot spots in neurogenic bladder.

Abstract:
The study establishes three synthetic indicators derived from academic
traces-assignee traces T-1, T-2 and ST-and investigates their
application in evaluating technological performance of assignees. Patent
data for the top 100 assignees in three fields, "Computer Hardware &
Software", "Motors, Engines & Parts", and "Drugs & Medical", were
retrieved from USPTO for further analysis. The results reveal that
traces are indeed valid and useful indicators for measuring
technological performance and providing detailed technical information
about assignees and the industry. In addition, we investigate the
relationship between traces and three other indicators: patent citation
counts, Current Impact Index and patent h-index. In comparison with the
three other indicators, traces demonstrate unique advantages and can be
a good complement to patent citation analysis.

Abstract:
Organizational socialization is gaining momentum in business research,
and statistical data shows us the importance of this topic for
practitioners as well. In this study, the vast organizational
socialization literature published over the past three decades is
analysed using bibliometric methods in order to explore the scope of the
field, detect current research priorities, and identify the most
prominent papers and authors. We identify thematically related clusters
of research and show how the organizational socialization field has
evolved through interconnected, yet distinct, subfields. Specifically,
three distinct aspects have been emphasized at different time periods:
(1) the organizational socialization tactics view in the 1980s; (2)
newcomer proactivity, information seeking, and the uncertainty reduction
process in the 1990s; and (3) a person-by-situation approach in the last
decade, which is a mix of both. The implications for future research
into organizational socialization research are presented and discussed.

Abstract:
Recommendation systems have drawn an increasingly broad range of
interest since early 1990s. Recently, a search with the query of
"recommendation systems" on Google Scholar found over 32,000 documents.
As the volume of the literature grows rapidly, thus, a systematic review
of the diverse research field and its current challenges becomes
essential. This study surveys the literature of recommendation systems
between 1992 and 2014. The overall structure of its intellectual
landscape is illustrated in terms of thematic concentrations of co-cited
references and emerging trends of bursting keywords and citations to
references. Our review is based on two sets of bibliographic records
retrieved from the Web of Science. The core dataset, obtained through a
topic search, contains 2573 original research and review articles. The
expanded dataset, consisting of 12,916 articles and reviews, was
collected by citation expansion. We identified intellectual landscapes,
landmark articles and bursting keywords of the domain in core and
broader perspectives. We found that a number of landmark studies in
1980s and 1990s and techniques such as LDA, pLSI, and matrix
factorization have tremendously influenced the development of the
recommendation systems research. Furthermore, our study reveals that the
field of recommendation systems is still evolving and developing.
Thematic trends in recommendation systems research reflect the
development of a wide variety of information systems such as the World
Wide Web and social media. Finally, collaborative filtering has been a
dominant research concept of the field. Recent emerging topics focus on
enhancing the effectiveness of recommendation systems by addressing
diverse challenges.

Abstract:
The use of quantitative performance measures to evaluate the
productivity, impact and quality of research has spread to almost all
parts of public R&D systems, including Big Science where traditional
measures of technical reliability of instruments and user
oversubscription have been joined by publication counts to assess
scientific productivity. But such performance assessment has been shown
to lead to absurdities, as the calculated average cost of single journal
publications easily may reach hundreds of millions of dollars. In this
article, the issue of productivity and impact is therefore further
qualified by the use of additional measures such as the immediacy index
as well as network analysis to evaluate qualitative aspects of the
impact of contemporary Big Science labs. Connecting to previous work
within what has been called "facilitymetrics", the article continues the
search for relevant bibliometric measures of the performance of Big
Science labs with the use of a case study of a recently opened facility
that is advertised as contributing to "breakthrough" research, by using
several more measures and thus qualifying the topic of performance
evaluation in contemporary Big Science beyond simple counts of
publications, citations, and costs.

Abstract:
This paper intends to describe the population evolution of a scientific
information web service during 2011-2012. Quarterly samples from
December 2011 to December 2012 were extracted from Google Scholar
Citations to analyse the number of members, distribution of their
bibliometric indicators, positions, institutional and country
affiliations and the labels to describe their scientific activity.
Results show that most of the users are young researchers, with a
starting scientific career and mainly from disciplines related to
information sciences and technologies. Another important result is that
this service is settled by waves emanating from specific institutions
and countries. This work concludes that this academic social network
presents some biases in the population distribution that does not make
it representative of the real scientific population.

EXPONENTIAL INFORMETRIC PROCESS

Abstract:
Zipf's law has intrigued people for a long time. This distribution
models a certain type of statistical regularity observed in a text.
George K. Zipf showed that, if a word is characterised by its frequency,
then, rank and frequency are not independent and approximately verify
the relationship:
Rank x frequency approximate to constant
Various explanations have been advanced to explain this law. In this
article, we talk about the Mandelbrot process, which includes two very
different approaches. In the first approach, Mandelbrot studies language
generation as the transmission of a signal and bases it on information
theory, using the entropy concept. In the second, geometric approach, he
draws a parallel with the fractal theory, where each word of the text is
a sequence of characters framed by two separators, meaning a simple
geometric pattern. This leads us to hypothesise that, since the
statistical regularities observed have several possible explanations,
Zipf's law carries other patterns. To verify this hypothesis, we chose a
text, which we modified and degraded in several successive stages. We
called T-i the text degraded at step i. We then segmented T (i) into
words. We found that rank and frequency were not independent and
approximately verified the relationship:
Rank beta(i) x frequency approximate to constant beta(i) > 1
The coefficient beta (i) increases with each step i. We call Eq. (1) the
generalized Zipf law. We found statistical regularities in the
deconstruction of the text. We notably observed a linear relationship
between the entropy H-i and the amount of effort E (i) of the various
degraded texts T (i) . To verify our assumptions, we degraded a text of
approximately 200 pages. At each step, we calculated various parameters
such as entropy, the amount of effort, and the coefficient. We observed
an inter-textual relationship between entropy and the amount of effort.
This paper therefore provides a proof of this relationship. coefficient.

Abstract:
Objectives: The aim of this study was to provide a descriptive overview
of the impact and production of literature on dietary therapies for
epilepsy and perform a citation analysis of the related research
articles.
Methods: We searched for 'ketogenic OR low-glycemic OR medium chain OR
modified Atkins in TITLE AND epilep*' in Title/Abstract/Keyword in
Scopus database.
Results: A total of 661 references were retrieved, 80% had been
published after 2000s, 87% were published in English, and 39% of the
publications were published in nine journals. The majority (76.3%) of
research articles describe the clinical application of the dietary
therapies regarding the classical ketogenic diet (80%), followed by the
modified Atkins diet (11.5%), medium chain triglyceride diet (6.4%), and
low glycemic index treatment (2.0%); the remaining are basic science
studies on the mechanisms of action. The citation analysis revealed that
the latter have the highest percentage variation in citation per
publication across the years. Concerning the article cohorts, the
greatest number of citations per publication was in 1998.
Discussion: The overview of the literature on the dietary therapy of
epilepsy evidences a growing interest in the field with a striking
prevalence of clinical over basic science studies. The most cited
clinical studies have validated the efficacy of the dietary therapies;
the few studies on the mechanisms of action received a great number of
citations. Bibliometric analysis measuring the trends and the impact of
the scientific literature would help researchers to a best knowledge of
this specific topic.

Abstract:
We present a model in which patent citations occur as new ideas are
produced from combinations of existing ideas. An idea's usability in
this process is represented as an interval in a variety space of ideas,
whose length determines the likelihood of citation. This process
endogenously derives exponential aging of patents, which is consistent
with empirical observations. The endogeneity of aging sets our process
apart from the standard preferential attachment literature. (C) 2015

Abstract:
Introduction
Hypospadias, the most common congenital malformation of the penis, is
characterized by an abnormal ventral opening of the urethral meatus,
abnormal ventral curvature of the penis, and an abnormal distribution of
the foreskin around the glans, with a ventrally-deficient hooded
foreskin, and has been described in modern peer-reviewed literature
since Noble's description in 1853. A dramatic increase in the literature
on hypospadiology has focused on two main topics: The aetiology of the
condition including molecular mechanisms and environmental influences,
as well as surgical techniques to repair the defect, however there have
been a number of facets of research stemming from this poorly understood
condition in a developing subspecialty (Figure).
The majority of these publications focus on the evolution of surgical
technique and management. Urethral reconstruction should offer the
ability to stand to urinate and combine a satisfactory cosmetic result.
The tubularized incised plate repair, popularized by Snodgrass et al.,
and the Mathieu repair, have been the mainstay for distal hypospadias,
however, there have still been a large number of well-described
techniques, with no consensus as to the ideal method of repair, some of
which is attributed to non-uniform standards of reporting outcomes.
There is also no standard objective means to qualitatively assess the
importance of each of these contributions.
Objective
The objective of this study was to determine the top 150 peer-reviewed
articles in the field of hypospadiology by way of citation analysis as a
means to determine the importance/relevance of each contribution
throughout 8 decades of research.
Study design
A cited reference search was carried out for indexed citations within
Web of Science (TM) Core Collection. The top 150 indexed cited articles
containing the topic "hypospadias" in specific subject categories were
compiled using a component of Science Citation Index command. References
were then evaluated, and analysed across a number of indices, and over
time.
Results
The mean number of citations was 76 for each article. The top 150
articles were published across 21 countries, with the majority
originating from the USA. The lead research institution was the
University of Texas (Southwestern) Medical Center. In total, the top 3
centers represented 33 publications within the top 150 citations. The
most commonly utilized journal was the Journal of Urology. The most
cited author was W.T. Snodgrass. 39% papers in the top 150 cited
articles were published prior to 1990. Three out of the five papers
cited in the 1940s dealt with operative technique to repair hypospadias.
The period 2000-2010 in contrast, demonstrated a significant inverse
correlation between molecular biology citations, and those for operative
techniques, with the incidence of the latter dropping to 6% of all cited
papers.
Discussion
This is the first study of its kind to analyse the most influential
articles in hypospadiology, and their characteristics assessed for
authorship, content and *impact factor*. Furthermore it allows data
analysis by topic and between time points. This not only declutters the
wealth of accumulated data on this subject, but also provides an
important adjunct to education and training. As with this study, other
citation analytical studies in urology found a significant preponderance
in cited studies originating from the USA. The prevalence of the US in
cited papers doesn't reflect any inherent bias, just a greater number of
publications.
Conclusion
Although there are inherent potential elements of bias in citation
analysis, this study demonstrates that citation analysis in a
complicated topic can provide a high-throughput, uncomplicated method of
quickly deciphering important contributions of authors and institutions
to the field of hypospadias research.

Abstract:
Objective: This study aimed to identify and analyze characteristics of
highly cited articles published in the Web of Science category of health
care sciences and services from 1 958; to 2012.
Methods: Articles that have been cited at least 100 times were assessed
regarding publication outputs, distribution of outputs in journals,
publications of authors, institutions, countries as well as citation
life cycles of the articles with the highest total citations since its
publication up to 2012 and the highest citations in 2012. Six
bibliometric indicators were used to evaluate source countries,
institutions, and authors. Total citations from the time the articles
were first published to the end of 2012 and citations in 2012 only were
applied. Additionally, Y-index was applied to evaluate publication
characteristics of authors. A high percentage of authors had the same
numbers of first author and corresponding author status of highly cited
articles in health care sciences and services field.
Results: Results showed that 890 of the most highly referenced articles,
published between 1977 and 2009, had been cited at least 100 times.
Medical Care and Journal of General Internal Medicine published the most
highly cited articles. The United States produced 76% of highly cited
articles and also published the most number of independent,
internationally collaborative, first authored, corresponding authored,
and single author highly cited articles. The Harvard University was the
most productive institute and was number one for the total highly cited
articles, inter-institutionally collaborative articles, single
institution articles, first author articles, and corresponding author
articles.
Conclusions: The application of quantitative techniques in the analysis
of highly cited articles can improve the researchers' understanding of
the directions in health care sciences and services field. Y-index is
useful for the evaluation of contributing authors.
