Abstract:
U.S. tenure-track positions have steadily declined over the past 30
years and emphasis on research productivity has escalated. To achieve
higher research and scholarship goals, the literature revealed that
African American scholars have additional issues to overcome beyond the
usual hurdles and challenges confronting other faculty. This study
explored current research productivity by examining citation impact
scores (h-indices) collected from Publish or Perish of African American
scholars in top 25 ranked schools of social work cited in the 2012 U.S.
News and World Report. The resultant sample consisted of N = 14 scholars
with h-index scores of 9 and higher. Results revealed nonsignificant
statistical differences between specified subgroupings, and 80% of these
scholars overexceeded their respective school mean h-index scores.
Future research calls for a more comprehensive knowledge of faculty
research and scholarship activities overall, including unique subgroups
of Social Work scholars such as African Americans.

SCIENTIFIC IMPACT; NETWORKS; STABILITY

Abstract:
For several decades, a leading paradigm of how to quantitatively assess
scientific research has been the analysis of the aggregated citation
information in a set of scientific publications. Although the
representation of this information as a citation network has already
been coined in the 1960s, it needed the systematic indexing of
scientific literature to allow for impact metrics that actually made use
of this network as a whole, improving on the then prevailing metrics
that were almost exclusively based on the number of direct citations.
However, besides focusing on the assignment of credit, the paper
citation network can also be studied in terms of the proliferation of
scientific ideas. Here we introduce a simple measure based on the
shortest-paths in the paper's in-component or, simply speaking, on the
shape and size of the wake of a paper within the citation network.
Applied to a citation network containing Physical Review publications
from more than a century, our approach is able to detect seminal
articles which have introduced concepts of obvious importance to the
further development of physics. We observe a large fraction of papers
co-authored by Nobel Prize laureates in physics among the top-ranked
publications.

Abstract:
The quantification of both the impact and quality of a scientist's
publication record is an essential step in making decisions concerning
hiring, promotion, and allocation of funding. In an attempt to resolve
this problem, Hirsh proposed the h-index, a single-number criterion
incorporating both the number of publications and the number of
citations per publication. This value facilitates rating of a
scientist's performance and is now one of the most commonly used
matrices. Here, we would like to propose the rating of high-throughput
screening (HTS) result by the h-index. Rating HTS result is to estimate
how the HTS result is preferred by a medicinal chemist. In this study,
we applied the h-index for rating HTS results and observed an enhanced
rating of preferred starting points for drug development. In addition,
we developed a new index, the maximum common structure (MCS) index,
which is more effective than the h-index. Copyright (c) 2014 John Wiley

Abstract:
Objectives: To develop a method for investigating co-authorship patterns
and author team characteristics associated with the publications in
high-impact journals through the integration of public MEDLINE data and
institutional scientific profile data.
Methods: For all current researchers at Columbia University Medical
Center, we extracted their publications from MEDLINE authored between
years 2007 and 2011 and associated journal impact factors, along with
author academic ranks and departmental affiliations obtained from
Columbia University Scientific Profiles (CUSP). Chi-square tests were
performed on co-authorship patterns, with Bonferroni correction for
multiple comparisons, to identify team composition characteristics
associated with publication impact factors. We also developed
co-authorship networks for the 25 most prolific departments between
years 2002 and 2011 and counted the internal and external authors,
inter-connectivity, and centrality of each department.
Results: Papers with at least one author from a basic science department
are significantly more likely to appear in high-impact journals than
papers authored by those from clinical departments alone. Inclusion of
at least one professor on the author list is strongly associated with
publication in high-impact journals, as is inclusion of at least one
research scientist. Departmental and disciplinary differences in the
ratios of within- to outside-department collaboration and overall
network cohesion are also observed.
Conclusions: Enrichment of co-authorship patterns with author scientific
profiles helps uncover associations between author team characteristics
and appearance in high-impact journals. These results may offer
implications for mentoring junior biomedical researchers to publish on
high-impact journals, as well as for evaluating academic progress across
disciplines in modern academic medical centers. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVES: In recent years, gender differences in academic promotion
have been documented within surgical fields. To the best of our
knowledge, gender discrepancies in association with scholarly
productivity have not been well assessed among academic
ophthalmologists. Because research productivity is strongly associated
with academic career advancement, we sought to determine whether gender
differences in scholarly impact, measured by the h-index, exist among
academic ophthalmologists.
DESIGN: Academic rank and gender were determined using faculty listings
from academic ophthalmology departments. h-index and publication
experience (in years) of faculty members were determined using the
Scopus database.
SETTING: Academic medical center.
RESULTS: From assistant professor through professor, the h-index
increased with subsequent academic rank (p < 0.001), although between
chairpersons and professors no statistical difference was found (p >
0.05). Overall, men had higher h-indices (h = 10.4 LI.- 0.34 standard
error of mean) than women (h = 6.0 0.38 standard error of mean), a
finding that was only statistically significant among assistant
professors in a subgroup analysis. Women were generally underrepresented
among senior positions. When controlling for publication range (i.e.,
length of time publishing), men had higher h-indices among those with 1
to 10 years of publication experience (p < 0.0001), whereas women had
scholarly impact equivalent to and even exceeding that of men later in
their careers.
CONCLUSION: Women in academic ophthalmology continue to be
underrepresented among senior faculty. Although women surpass men in
scholarly productivity during the later stages of their careers, low
scholarly impact during the earlier stages may impede academic
advancement and partly explain the gender disparity in senior academic
positions. (C) 2014 Association of Program Directors in Surgery.

Abstract:
The "systeme d'interrogation, de gestion et d'analyse des publications
scientifiques" (System for Identification, Management and Analysis of
Scientific Publications), or SIGAPS, is an innovative tool of French
design that enables the identification and analysis of bibliographic
references produced by a given researcher or unit using the Medline
database (PubMed). This evaluation takes into account the author's rank
of signature and the impact factor of the journal of publication within
the discipline in question. The limits are those of the impact factor.
Analyses produced by SIGAPS enable financial assessment to be made by
hospitals. (C) 2014 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
Citation analysis is an established bibliometric method which catalogues
papers according to the number of times they have been referenced. It is
believed that the total number of citations an article receives reflects
its importance among its peers. Never before has a bibliometric analysis
been performed in the area of Cleft Lip and Palate. Our citation
analysis creates a comprehensive list of the 50 most influential papers
in this field. Journals specializing in Cleft Palate, Craniofacial,
Plastic Surgery, Maxillofacial Surgery, Aesthetics and Radiology were
searched to establish which articles most enriched the specialty over
the past 70 years. The results show an interesting collection of papers
which reveal developing trends in surgical techniques. These landmark
papers mould and influence management and decision-making today.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: We practice in an era of evidence-based medicine. In 1993,
Solomon and McLeod published an article examining study designs in 3
surgical journals from 1980 and 1990.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate subsequent 30-year
trends in the quality of selected literature.
DESIGN: All of the articles from Diseases of the Colon & Rectum,
Surgery, and the British Journal of Surgery during 2000 and 2010 were
classified by study design. Nonclinical studies were substratified by
animal/laboratory, surgical technique, editorial/review, or
miscellaneous articles. Clinical articles were categorized as case or
comparative studies, further categorized by study design, and rated on a
10-point scale to determine strength. We compared interobserver
reliability using a random sample.
SETTING: This study was conducted at 3 North American medical centers.
PATIENTS: Patients described in the scope of the literature were
included in this study.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Frequency, type, and strength of study design
were measured.
RESULTS: We evaluated 1911 articles (967 clinical; 17% comparative).
There was a significant increase in multicenter clinical studies (from
12% to 27%; p < 0.0001) and mean study population (from 326 to 6775; p <
0.05). Studies using administrative data increased from 14% to 43% (p <
0.0001). Case reports decreased from 16% to 7% of all clinical studies
(p < 0.001), whereas the percentage of comparative studies increased
from 14% to 21% (p = 0.001). The percentage of randomized controlled
trials did not increase significantly (8.5% in 2000; 10.0% in 2010; p =
0.44). The mean 10-point score for comparative studies was 6.7 for both
years (p = 0.50). There was good interobserver agreement in the
classification of studies (kappa = 0.70) and moderate agreement in
scoring comparative studies (kappa = 0.47).
LIMITATIONS: This descriptive study cannot fully account for the reasons
behind the identified differences.
CONCLUSIONS: Comparative and multicenter studies, mean study population,
and the use of administrative data increased from 2000 to 2010. This
suggests that increased use of administrative databases has allowed
larger populations of patients from more institutions to be studied and
may be more generalizable. Researchers should strive toward improving
the level of evidence (see Video, Supplemental Digital Content 1,
http://links.lww.com/DCR/A167).

Abstract:
The emergence of journal quality lists such as that issued by the UK's
Association of Business Schools (ABS) has instigated a wave of journal
list fetishism' throughout the business school sector. Business school
deans and research managers have become fixated on whether the
publication records of current staff and new applicants include the
requisite number of hits' in the best ranked journals. Little attention
is paid to additional measures of research quality, or to the broader
context within which the research has been produced. This paper examines
the current fetishizing of the ABS guide in general, and the magical 4'
rating in particular (the symbolic token for top journals). It begins by
looking at how trust in numbers' may have assisted the uptake of the ABS
guide through developing a perception of trustworthiness' and then
raises questions regarding the current fetishizing of 4' ratings using
additional data within the ABS guide.

SYSTEMATIC REVIEWS; SCIENCE

Abstract:
Literature reviews underpin the majority of research projects in the
health sciences, and yet relatively little analysis has been published
as to the most appropriate method to identify relevant literature,
outside of specialist information journals. The method of applying
keyword search queries to bibliographic databases using Boolean logic
dominates literature reviews due to its easy application to the major
online databases. However, it is recognised increasingly as being
problematic where the research question cannot be clearly defined or
requires an element of exploration, due to its reliance on author's use
of titling and keywords and is unable to identify topics other than
those defined in the search query. This paper discusses the relative
merits of a systematic citation searching approach as both an
alternative and a concurrent method to keyword searching. A method of
citation searching, both forwards and backwards, which is iterated to
form a closed loop solution, is discussed. An illustrative example is
presented of both methods, applying them to the topic of the UK National
Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) cost-effectiveness
threshold. The case study finds the citation searching approach
dominates the traditional keyword searching approach, finding 76 papers
of relevance, including all 15 found by the alternative approach.
Conceptually, and in the example presented, it is demonstrated that the
proposed method can represent a dominant strategy to the more
traditional approach in some situations, highlighting that, wherever
possible, it is preferential to employ multiple methods of searching.
However, it is clear that a better understanding is required as to how
we can most efficiently search the ever-growing sea of literature.

Abstract:
A citation analysis was completed on articles published in Bulletin of
Environmental Contamination and Toxicology over the period of 1966-2009.
Articles were grouped into 5 year intervals and the top 50 most-cited
papers in each year interval were categorized according to research
theme. Over the journal's history, articles in the toxicity research
theme dominated top-cited articles published by the journal followed by
articles in the environmental concentration theme and the mechanistic
theme. The geographic area of submission of top-cited articles has shown
large changes with time, initially being dominated by papers from North
American and now dominated by papers from Asia. An examination of the
citation history for the highest cited paper in each year interval
indicated that the average time to achieve 90 % of total citations is 25
years.

Abstract:
This study analyses the trends and visibility of research on public
relations in the most relevant Spanish media and communication journals
between the years 2000 and 2012. Bibliometrics and content analysis are
used to show the reduced presence of articles on public relations in
these publications. A trend towards gender parity in authorship is
confirmed in the sample, as well as a plurality of universities and a
variety of research themes. The study also proves preference for generic
questions rather than for specialised topics. Another finding is that
almost one fourth of the specific articles on this discipline do not
contain the term "public relations". This can hint towards the need to
have a specific high-impact publication on public relations to bring
together and provide visibility to the contributions of researchers in
this field. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
Objective: To describe the Spanish scientific production of primary care
during 2008-2012.
Design: Observational study bibliometric.
Setting: Spanish scientific production in primary care.
Participants: The study focused on publications indexed in Medline.
Main measurements: In each record was obtained journal, year of
publication, first/last author, workplace and autonomous community.
Later, articles were classified according to their content or areas of
research. The *impact factor* was obtained from the basis of
bibliometric analysis Journal Citation Reports.
Results: Using search criteria, were selected 1,048 documents. The
transiency rate was 62.6%. Production increased from 170 papers in 2008
to 291 in 2012. Most (65.7%) came from health centers, but we observed a
significant increase (P=.01) of the articles from units or research
institutes (5.9% in 2008, 12.0% in 2012). Of the total, 61.6% were
classified as clinical aspects, 22.5% were published in the journal
Atencion Primaria, 80.5% in journals with *impact factor* and 33.49% in
foreign journals, being higher this proportion (P<.001) in units or
research institutes (70.5% vs. 29.8%). In relation to population
(articles/100.000 inhab.), the most productive communities were Cataluna
(4.1), Castilla-La Mancha (3.6), Arag6n (3.4) and Navarra (3.4).
Conclusions: In primary care publications there is great diversity in
both research areas such as in journals where published. Most are from
health centers, treat clinical aspects and published in Spanish
journals. Differences in the volume of scientific production between
regions are observed. (C) 2013 Elsevier Espana, S.L.U. All rights

Abstract:
The work of the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu has received
increased attention in management and organization studies (MOS).
However, the full potential of his work has so far rarely been
exploited. This paper aims to pinpoint the contributions of Bourdieu's
work to research in MOS. I conducted a citation context analysis of nine
leading journals to investigate how citations to Bourdieu's work have
developed over time, which contents from Bourdieu's work are cited and
how comprehensively researchers have so far engaged with Bourdieu. Based
on these findings, I discuss how Bourdieu's work may contribute to
research in MOS, particularly to a micro-foundation of new institutional
theory and to the reflection of academic practice in MOS. (C) 2014

Abstract:
In an increasingly digital environment, many factors influence how
academic researchers decide what to read, what to cite, where to publish
their work, and how they assign trust when making these decisions. This
study focuses on how this differs according to the geographical location
of the researcher, specifically in terms of the country's level of
development. Data were collected by a questionnaire survey of 3650
authors who had published articles in international journals. The human
development index (HDI) was used to compare authors' scholarly behavior.
The findings show that researchers from less developed countries such as
India and China (medium HDI) compared to those in developed countries,
such as the USA and UK (very high HDI) are more reliant on external
factors and those criteria that are related to authority, brand and
reputation, such as authors' names, affiliation, country and journal
name. Even when deciding where to publish, the publisher of the journal
is more important for developing countries than it is for researchers
from the US and UK Scholars from high HDI countries also differ in these
aspects: a) they are less discriminatory than authors from developing
countries in their citation practices; b) for them the fact that a
source is peer reviewed is the most important factor when deciding where
to publish; c) they are more negative towards the use of repositories
and social media for publishing and more skeptical about their potential
for increasing usage or reaching a wider audience. (C) 2014 Elsevier

Abstract:
The preferences of the authors of Chinese library and information
science (LIS) journal articles in citing Internet sources were
investigated using eight premium Chinese LIS journals from Chinese
Social Sciences Citation Index (the observation group) and 10 journals
in other disciplines (the control group) from the same database from
1999 to 2008. A total of 252,881 citations were analyzed in terms of
count, domain name, and citing purposes. The results show that (a) in
comparison to the disciplines in the control group, LIS articles in
Chinese journals indicated a strong preference for citing Internet
sources, and this preference is increasing; (b) LIS articles did not
seem to discriminate against domain names when citing Internet sources;
and (c) LIS articles cited more Internet sources as evidence to support
research results and conclusions. Excessive dependency on Internet
sources may raise concerns over the quality, research ethics, and
credibility of research publications. Chinese LIS researchers should
place more emphasis on the disadvantages of Internet sources as
supporting material. Guidelines and criteria to help researchers,
journal editors, students, and librarians assess information on the Web
need to be developed. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

This evaluation takes into account the author's rank
of signature and the *impact factor* of the journal of publication
within the discipline in question. The limits are those of the *impact
factor*. Analyses produced by SIGAPS enable financial assessment to be
made by hospitals. (C) 2014 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.
