Abstract:
Based on the samples of 113,468 publications on environmental assessment
(EA)from the past 20 years, we used a bibliometric analysis to study the
literature in terms of trends of growth, subject categories and
journals, international collaboration, geographic distribution of
publications, and scientific research issues. By applying thresholds to
network centralities, a core group of countries can be distinguished as
part of the international collaboration network. A frequently used
keywords analysis found that the priority in assessment would gradually
change from project environmental impact assessment (EIA) to strategic
environmental assessment (SEA). Decision-theoretic approaches (i.e.,
environmental indicator selection, life cycle assessment, etc.), along
with new technologies and methods (i.e., the geographic information
system and modeling) have been widely applied in the EA research field
over the past 20 years. Hot spots such as "biodiversity" and "climate
change" have been emphasized in current EA research, a trend that will
likely continue in the future. The h-index has been used to evaluate the
research quality among countries all over the world, while the
improvement of developing countries' EA systems is becoming a popular
research topic. Our study reveals patterns in scientific outputs and
academic collaborations and serves as an altemative and innovative way
of revealing global research trends in the EA research field. (C) 2014

Abstract:
The intent of this article is to use cooperative game theory to predict
the level of social impact of scholarly papers created by citation
networks. Social impact of papers can be defined as the net effect of
citations on a network. A publication exerts direct and indirect
influence on others (e.g., by citing articles) and is itself influenced
directly and indirectly (e.g., by cited articles). This network leads to
an influence structure of citing and cited publications. Drawing on
cooperative game theory, our research problem is to translate into
mathematical equations the rules that govern the social impact of a
paper in a citation network. In this article, we show that when citation
relationships between academic papers function within a citation
structure, the result is social impact instead of the (individual)
citation impact of each paper. Mathematical equations explain the
interaction between papers in such a citation structure. The equations
show that the social impact of a paper is affected by the (individual)
citation impact of citing publications, immediacy of citing articles,
and number of both citing and cited papers. Examples are provided for
several academic papers.

Abstract:
Designed to advance the two-way translational process between basic
research and clinical practice, translational medicine has become one of
the most important areas in biomedicine. The quantitative evaluation of
translational medicine is valuable for the decision making of global
translational medical research and funding. Using the scientometric
analysis and information extraction techniques, this study
quantitatively analyzed the scientific articles on translational
medicine. The results showed that translational medicine had significant
scientific output and impact, specific core field and institute, and
outstanding academic status and benefit. While it is not considered in
this study, the patent data are another important indicators that should
be integrated in the relevant research in the future.

Abstract:
Quantitative, qualitative, and innovative application of bibliometric
research performance indicators to anatomy and radiology research and
education can enhance cross-fertilization between the two disciplines.
We aim to use these indicators to identify long-term trends in
dissemination of publications in neuroimaging anatomy (including both
productivity and citation rates), which has subjectively waned in
prestige during recent years. We examined publications over the last 40
years in two neuroradiological journals, AJNR and Neuroradiology, and
selected and categorized all neuroimaging anatomy research articles
according to theme and type. We studied trends in their citation
activity over time, and mathematically analyzed these trends for 1977,
1987, and 1997 publications. We created a novel metric, citation
half-life at 10 years postpublication (CHL-10), and used this to examine
trends in the skew of citation numbers for anatomy articles each year.
We identified 367 anatomy articles amongst a total of 18,110 in these
journals: 74.2% were original articles, with study of normal anatomy
being the commonest theme (46.7%). We recorded a mean of 18.03 citations
for each anatomy article, 35% higher than for general neuroradiology
articles. Graphs summarizing the rise (upslope) in citation rates after
publication revealed similar trends spanning two decades. CHL-10 trends
demonstrated that more recently published anatomy articles were likely
to take longer to reach peak citation rate. Bibliometric analysis
suggests that anatomical research in neuroradiology is not languishing.
This novel analytical approach can be applied to other aspects of
neuroimaging research, and within other subspecialties in radiology and
anatomy, and also to foster anatomical education. Clin. Anat. 28:16-26,

TRENDS

Abstract:
Background: Since Alan Pritchard defined bibliometrics as "the
application of statistical methods to media of communication" in 1969,
bibliometric analyses have become widespread. To date, however,
bibliometrics has not been used to analyze publications related to the
U.S. Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS).
Purpose: To determine the most frequently cited BRFSS-related topical
areas, institutions, and journals.
Methods: A search of the Web of Knowledge database in 2013 identified
U.S.-published studies related to BRFSS, from its start in 1984 through
2012. Search terms were BRFSS, Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance
System, or Behavioral Risk Survey. The resulting 1,387 articles were
analyzed descriptively and produced data for VOSviewer, a computer
program that plotted a relevance distance-based map and clustered
keywords from text in titles and abstracts.
Results: Topics, journals, and publishing institutions ranged widely.
Most research was clustered by content area, such as cancer screening,
access to care, heart health, and quality of life. The American Journal
of Preventive Medicine and American Journal of Public Health published
the most BRFSS-related papers (95 and 70, respectively).
Conclusions: Bibliometrics can help identify the most frequently
published BRFSS-related topics, publishing journals, and publishing
institutions. BRFSS data are widely used, particularly by CDC and
academic institutions such as the University of Washington and other
universities hosting top-ranked schools of public health. Bibliometric
analysis and mapping provides an innovative way of quantifying and
visualizing the plethora of research conducted using BRFSS data and
summarizing the contribution of this surveillance system to public
health. (C) 2015 American Journal of Preventive Medicine. All rights

Abstract:
An objective and multi-perspective evaluation of academic impact might
provide a more complete understanding of the recent evolution of Chinese
medical journals. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the academic
impact of these journals using citation data from the JCR database. We
collected data on Chinese medical journals for the analysis, including
journal title, ISSN, language, publisher, frequency, *impact factor*,
median *impact factor* (category), citable items, total cites, self
cites, immediacy index, and aggregate immediacy index (category). We
found most indicators of the Chinese medical journals were in middle low
position or low position. This indicated that the quality and impact of
these journals was comparatively low. Based on the above finding,
efforts need to be made to improve the quality and impact of Chinese
medical journals.

Abstract:
Background: The rapid development of information and communication
technology has replaced traditional books by electronic versions. Most
print dermatology journals have been replaced with electronic journals
(e-journals), which are readily used by clinicians and medical students.
Objective: The objectives of this study were to determine whether
e-readers are appropriate for reading dermatology journals, to conduct
an attitude study of both medical personnel and students, and to find a
way of improving e-book use in the field of dermatology. Methods: All
articles in the Korean Journal of Dermatology published from January
2010 to December 2010 were utilized in this study. Dermatology house
officers, student trainees in their fourth year of medical school, and
interns at Korea University Medical Center participated in the study.
After reading the articles with Kindle 2, their impressions and
evaluations were recorded using a questionnaire with a 5-point Likert
scale. Results: The results demonstrated that gray-scale e-readers might
not be suitable for reading dermatology journals, especially for case
reports compared to the original articles. Only three of the thirty-one
respondents preferred e-readers to printed papers. The most common
suggestions from respondents to encourage usage of e-books in the field
of dermatology were the introduction of a color display, followed by the
use of a touch screen system, a cheaper price, and ready-to-print
capabilities. Conclusion: In conclusion, our study demonstrated that
current e-readers might not be suitable for reading dermatology
journals. However, they may be utilized in selected situations according
to the type and topic of the papers.

100 CITATION-CLASSICS; ARTICLES; SURGERY; JOURNALS; IMPACT; BIAS

Abstract:
Background: Despite its limitations, citation analysis remains one of
the best currently available tools for quantifying the impact of
articles. Bibliometric studies list the "best-sellers'' in a single
location, and they have been published frequently in many fields during
recent years. The purpose of the present study was to report the
qualities and characteristics of citation classics in orthopaedic knee
research.
Methods: The database of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI)
was utilized for identification of articles published from 1945 to March
2014. All knee articles that had been published in sixty-five
orthopaedic and twenty-nine rheumatology journals and that had been
cited at least 200 times were identified. The top 100 were selected for
further analysis of authorship, source journal, number of citations,
citation rate (both since publication and in 2013), geographic origin,
article type, and level of evidence.
Results: The publication dates of the 100 most-cited articles ranged
from 1948 to 2007, with the greatest number of articles published in the
1980s. Citations per article ranged from 2640 to 287. All articles were
published in eleven of the ninety-four journals. The leading countries
of origin were the U.S. followed by the U.K. and Sweden. The two main
focus areas were sports traumatology and degenerative disease. The
number of citations per article was also greatest for articles published
in the 1980s. Basic research articles were cited more quickly, but not
more often, than clinical articles. Most articles represented Level-IV
evidence, followed by Levels II, III, and I.
Conclusions: This bibliometric study is likely to include a list of
intellectual milestones in orthopaedic knee research. It is apparent
that a high level of evidence is not mandatory for an article to gain a
large number of citations. Bibliometric reports provide a reflection of
the quality of cited research published in a specific field and should
therefore provoke thinking within the scientific community.

Abstract:
Regular assessment of the state of water research and development (R&D)
in South Africa is a necessary component of science policy and
successful R&D implementation. Among others, effective R&D has a direct
impact on water resource management and promotes training and capacity
building initiatives. Much of the country's water research is carried
out under the auspices of the Water Research Commission (WRC), a
national public entity established by the Water Research Act (Act No. 34
of 1971). Water R&D is carried out by universities, public research
institutions and science councils as well as the private sector. A
scientometric examination of South Africa's research and development
performance indicates that while the water research and development
community is small, it is highly productive. The analysis indicates that
the South African contribution to the global share of water-related
papers in journals indexed by the ISI (now Thomson Reuters Web of
Science) is more than 3 times the average for all disciplines in the
country, and that South Africa ranks 19th in the world in the domain of
'Water Resources'. A study of the patent data further indicates a much
higher than average conversion of knowledge to products as indicated by
the water-related patent/total patent ratios.

Abstract:
This citation analysis of Sociologicky casopis / Czech Sociological
Review looks at the journal's total influence and the influence outside
Czech(oslovak) sociology as measured by the number of citations in
foreign journals. Indexed since the 1970s, SC/CSR is the longest-covered
East European sociology journal in the Web of Science. Beyond citation
counts available through the WoS's Basic Search option, foreign-journal
citation data were collected by examining the reference lists of all
WoS-indexed foreign-journal articles listed as citing SC/CSR in the
WoS's Cited Reference Search or Google Scholar. In total, 690
foreign-journal citations of SC/CSR between 1965 and 2013 were
retrieved, including 113 author self-citations and 253 citations made by
Czech and Slovak authors. Among the 690 citations, 379 are not indexed
correctly in the WoS. The number of foreign citations missing from the
WoS ranges from 14% for the Czech issues in 2002-2013 to 32% for the
English issues in the same period. WoS is missing all 221 citations to
the Czech Sociological Review between 1993 and 2001; this was a separate
journal not included in the SSCI, which resulted in an important loss of
international visibility for Czech sociology. In terms of
per-article-citedness by foreign journals, the English-language edition
of SC/CSR was expectably cited more often than the Czech edition. The
highest foreign citation numbers were received by the English-language
edition in 1993-2001, followed by the English issues in 2002-2013. The
author's expanded foreign citation data set yields a very different
ranking of most-cited articles from SC/CSR than the one based on WoS
citation counts, suggesting that WoS is not a reliable source of data
for identifying most-cited articles. A comparison between most-cited
articles by any journal and by foreign journals only indicates that
different articles are influential nationally and internationally.

Abstract:
Journal rankings and journal ratings are important to government,
research institutes and scientific research, which use as the criteria
for evaluating researcher's performance to determine whether he or she
can get a promotion or research funds. The only widely adopted journal
assessment method is *impact factor*, focusing on the citations between
academic journals. However, *impact factor* disregards the practical
applications of academic journals. In this article, we propose a method
to rank academic journals, considering non-patent reference (NPR) in the
patent document. The differences of journal ranking from *impact factor*
and NPR are compared in different fields. The results of this study
provide a new perspective to assess the practical value of academic
journals, especially in those technological and scientific fields. This
study considered science and technology linkages and the needs of
journal assessment stakeholders, which sheds light on journal assessment
and journal ranking methods.

Abstract:
Objective: This study aimed to identify and analyze characteristics of
highly cited articles published in the Web of Science category of health
care sciences and services from 1 958; to 2012.
Methods: Articles that have been cited at least 100 times were assessed
regarding publication outputs, distribution of outputs in journals,
publications of authors, institutions, countries as well as citation
life cycles of the articles with the highest total citations since its
publication up to 2012 and the highest citations in 2012. Six
bibliometric indicators were used to evaluate source countries,
institutions, and authors. Total citations from the time the articles
were first published to the end of 2012 and citations in 2012 only were
applied. Additionally, Y-index was applied to evaluate publication
characteristics of authors. A high percentage of authors had the same
numbers of first author and corresponding author status of highly cited
articles in health care sciences and services field.
Results: Results showed that 890 of the most highly referenced articles,
published between 1977 and 2009, had been cited at least 100 times.
Medical Care and Journal of General Internal Medicine published the most
highly cited articles. The United States produced 76% of highly cited
articles and also published the most number of independent,
internationally collaborative, first authored, corresponding authored,
and single author highly cited articles. The Harvard University was the
most productive institute and was number one for the total highly cited
articles, inter-institutionally collaborative articles, single
institution articles, first author articles, and corresponding author
articles.
Conclusions: The application of quantitative techniques in the analysis
of highly cited articles can improve the researchers' understanding of
the directions in health care sciences and services field. Y-index is
useful for the evaluation of contributing authors.

Abstract:
Background: Citations of scientific papers in health care have become a
subject of interest, as in any scientific sector. However, such a
metric, while useful in a simple way, can become subject to too much
credibility, and therefore to advanced analyses which are not soundly
grounded even if methodologically valid.
Objectives: The objective was to contextualise citation indices in
health care science, juxtaposed with a parallel analytic paper.
Methods: The literature was reviewed and set against the objectives of
metrics of literature and of researchers.
Results: The strengths and weaknesses of citation indices in the health
sector were identified, with practical examples of perverse effects, and
compared with the core objectives of health care development.
Conclusions: Citation indices in health care science have a value, but
this is limited to giving a broad overview. Other measures of
effectiveness, including impact on education, on health care
development, and on stimulation of applied developments, are needed
rather than spuriously scientific advanced analyses of citation counts.

Abstract:
Valuation of intangible assets becomes a key issue for companies
oriented towards continuous innovation since information and knowledge
represent an important dimension of the market value. In this context,
patents are relevant components of the intellectual property portfolio.
Various methods have been proposed by now to valuate patents in monetary
units. However, none of them is enough comprehensive to cover all facets
that shape intangibles. For patenting strategy and internal decision
making, as well as for bookkeeping, bibliometric indicators for patent
valuation is of high relevance. An empirical model based on bibliometric
indicators has been formulated in this research. In order to extract the
tacit knowledge and perception of IPR experts about the relevance of
possible bibliometric indicators in the equation of patent valuation, a
survey on 40 IPR experts was conducted in this research. Several theses
have been considered and tested. The empirical study highlighted the
need of refining the definition and components and revealed that
citations and patent family are significant indicators in patent
valuation.

Abstract:
This paper studies the basic performance and characteristics of the
papers on arts with the methodology of bibliometrics, taking the art
papers from SSCI and A&HCI of Web of Science in 1998-2013 as samples.
The study shows that, from the perspective of metrics, art papers in
SSCI and A&HCI are stable in terms of publication volume, with a trend
of decreasing slightly, from 1998 to 2003; the papers are diversified in
types, with a lower percentage of articles and higher percentage of
reviews; the papers of art and other disciplines are integrated to a
certain extent, yet not highly integrated; relatively speaking, art
papers published in China is less influential compared with those in
America, England and France, but from the viewpoint of time period they
are also increasing their impact in recent 10 years.
