The (lack of) Impact of Retraction on *Citation* Networks

Abstract:
Article retraction in research is rising, yet retracted articles
continue to be cited at a disturbing rate. This paper presents an
analysis of recent retraction patterns, with a unique emphasis on the
role author self-cites play, to assist the scientific community in
creating counter-strategies. This was accomplished by examining the
following: (1) A categorization of retracted articles more complete than
previously published work. (2) The relationship between citation counts
and after-retraction self-cites from the authors of the work, and the
distribution of self-cites across our retraction categories. (3) The
distribution of retractions written by both the author and the editor
across our retraction categories. (4) The trends for seven of our nine
defined retraction categories over a 6-year period. (5) The average
journal *impact factor* by category, and the relationship between
*impact factor*, author self-cites, and overall citations. Our findings
indicate new reasons for retractions have emerged in recent years, and
more editors are penning retractions. The rates of increase for
retraction varies by category, and there is statistically significant
difference of average *impact factor* between many categories. 18 % of
authors self-cite retracted work post retraction with only 10 % of those
authors also citing the retraction notice. Further, there is a positive
correlation between self-cites and after retraction citations.

Penetrating the Omerta of Predatory Publishing: The Romanian Connection

Abstract:
Not so long ago, a well institutionalized predatory journal exposed
itself by publishing a hoax article that blew the whistle for its
devastating influence on the academic affairs of a small country. This
paper puts that experiment in context, gives all the important details
and analyzes the results. The experiment was inspired by well-known
cases of scientific activism and is in line with recent efforts against
predatory publishers. The paper presents the evidence in detail and uses
it to analyze the publishing practices of the offending journal, using
established criteria for assessing predatory publications. That journal
somehow acquired an *impact factor* and charged money to publish
thousands of "scientific" papers without any peer review. Since the
*impact factor* is the major official evaluation criteria for scientists
in Serbia, these papers disturbed the whole academic evaluation process.
Credentials acquired by those publications form a strong obstacle to
institutionalized reasoned efforts against such practices. This case
warns the whole community of the long lasting damage when journals with
low publishing ethics are taken seriously.

An Explanation of Resisted Discoveries Based on Construal-Level Theory

Abstract:
New discoveries and theories are crucial for the development of science,
but they are often initially resisted by the scientific community. This
paper analyses resistance to scientific discoveries that supplement
previous research results or conclusions with new phenomena, such as
long chains in macromolecules, Alfv,n waves, parity nonconservation in
weak interactions and quasicrystals. Construal-level theory is used to
explain that the probability of new discoveries may be underestimated
because of psychological distance. Thus, the insufficiently examined
scope of an accepted theory may lead to overstating the suitable scope
and underestimating the probability of its undiscovered
counter-examples. Therefore, psychological activity can result in people
instinctively resisting new discoveries. Direct evidence can help people
judge the validity of a hypothesis with rational thinking. The effects
of authorities and textbooks on the resistance to discoveries are also
discussed. From the results of our analysis, suggestions are provided to
reduce resistance to real discoveries, which will benefit the
development of science.

Abstract:
Disability is an identity, a culture/community/cause/power struggle; a
rights movement demanding civil, ethical, political and social positions
at tables of power, equality and social justice. This perspective forms
the core of changes in the past 50years in legal, social and political
arenas that have taken place and is essential to understanding the
growth, depth and nature of Disability Studies as a separate and
legitimate field of inquiry. This study focuses primarily on studying
the evolving literature in the core aspects of Disability Studies, using
citation and text analyses to study trends in publishing patterns and
the field's impact on the wider academic enterprise. Lack of thorough
indexing to key journals made traditional citation analysis impossible,
leading to the use of dissertations as a means to tease out useful
information on the state of Disability Studies today. The most
significant finding of the study is the lack of adequate indexing of key
journals in standard scholarly databases, which can only limit the
potential development of both the field and its impact/influence on
related disciplines and professions. The study also found the
significant role that dissertations can play in tracking new research
directions.

Abstract:
Objective: Peer reviewers sometimes request that authors cite their
work, either appropriately or via coercive self-citation to highlight
the reviewers' work The objective of this study was to determine in peer
reviews submitted to one biomedical journal (1) the extent of peer
reviewer self-citation; (2) the proportion of reviews recommending
revision or acceptance versus rejection that included reviewer
self-citations; and (3) the proportion of reviewer self-citations versus
citations to others that included a rationale.
Methods: Peer reviews for manuscripts submitted in 2012 to the Journal
of Psychosomatic Research were evaluated. Data extraction was performed
independently by two investigators.
Results: There were 616 peer reviews (526 reviewers; 276 manuscripts),
of which 444 recommended revision or acceptance and 172 rejection. Of
428 total citations, there were 122 peer reviewer self-citations (29%)
and 306 citations to others' work (71%). Self-citations were more common
in reviews recommending revision or acceptance (105 of 316 citations;
33%) versus rejection (17/112; 15%; p < 0.001). The percentage of
self-citations with no rationale (26 of 122; 21%) was higher than for
citations to others' work (15 of 306; 5%; p <0.001).
Conclusions: Self-citation in peer reviews is common and may reflect a
combination of appropriate citation to research that should be cited in
published articles and inappropriate citation intended to highlight the
work of the peer reviewer. Providing instructions to peer reviewers
about self-citation and asking them to indicate when and why they have
self-cited may help to limit self-citation to appropriate, constructive
recommendations. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
A primary objective for researchers who publish teaching activities and
methods in the Teaching of Psychology (ToP) is to inform best practices
in classroom teaching. Beyond the learning effect in the classroom,
these ToP teaching activity and method articles may also have a
scientific effect that heretofore researchers have overlooked.
Therefore, we conducted a bibliometric examination of 765 teaching
activities published in ToP from 1975 to 2007. Teaching activities are
cited a surprisingly high number of times. More important, approximately
half of the citations were from sources other than ToP, demonstrating a
broader scientific influence. Further, we found that teaching research
citation rates are comparable to authors' other peer-reviewed
traditional psychology discipline research. We discuss findings in terms
of implications for teaching as research, the potential effect of
citations on tenure and promotion decisions, and ToP as a hub science.

Abstract:
Health administration (HA) faculty members publish in a variety of
journals, including journals focused on management, economics, policy,
and information technology. HA faculty members are evaluated on the
basis of the quality and quantity of their journal publications.
However, it is unclear how perceptions of these journals vary by
subdiscipline, department leadership role, or faculty rank. It is also
not dear how perceptions of journals may have changed over the past
decade since the last evaluation of journal rankings in the field was
published. The purpose of the current study is to examine how
respondents rank journals in the field of HA, as well as the variation
in perception by academic rank, department leadership status, and area
of expertise. Data were drawn from a survey of HA faculty members at
U.S. universities, which was completed in 2012. Different journal
ranking patterns were noted for faculty members of different
subdisciplines. The health management-oriented journals (Health Care
Management Review and Journal of Healthcare Management) were ranked
higher than in previous research, suggesting that journal ranking
perceptions may have changed over the intervening decade. Few
differences in perceptions were noted by academic rank, but we found
that department chairs were more likely than others to select Health
Affairs in their top three most prestigious journals (beta = 0.768, p <
.01). Perceived journal prestige varied between a department chair and
untenured faculty in different disciplines, and this perceived
difference could have implications for promotion and tenure decisions.

Abstract:
This research uses quantitative techniques to reveal trends in project
management related research published between 1962 and 2012. The data
set for this research includes 94,472 unique records sourced from the
Scopus and ISI Web of Science databases. The keywords and abstracts that
authors have used to describe their work have been analysed in terms of
word frequency, rate of change and the co-occurrence of keywords and
abstract terms. This data has been used to construct network maps of the
field, depicting the relative association between key topics.
Comparisons are made between the frequencies of key terms and rapid
changes in the ways that terms are used in the literature to identify
emergent trends and passing fads. Amongst other findings, this research
has revealed evidence to indicate a change in emphasis in project
management research from a technical engineering orientation to one
which encompasses a broader organisational perspective. (C) 2014

Abstract:
Objective: several studies have examined the academic production of the
researchers at the CNPq, in several areas of knowledge. The aim of this
study was to evaluate the scientific production of researchers in
Hematology/Oncology who hold scientific productivity grants from the
Brazilian Council for Scientific and Technological Development.
Methods: the Academic CVs of 28 researchers in Hematology/Oncology with
active grants in the three-year period from 2006 to 2008 were included
in the analysis. The variables of interest were: institution,
researchers' time after doctorate, tutoring of undergraduate students,
masters and PhD degree, scientific production and its impact.
Results: from a total of 411 researchers in Medicine, 28 (7%) were
identified as being in the area of Hematology/Oncology. There was a
slight predominance of males (53.6%) and grant holders in category 1.
Three Brazilian states are responsible for approximately 90% of the
researchers: sao Paulo (21,75%), Rio de Janeiro (3,11%), and Minas
Gerais (2, 7%). During their academic careers, the researchers published
2,655 articles, with a median of 87 articles per researcher (IQR = 52 to
122). 65 and 78% of this total were indexed on the Web of Science and
Scopus databases, respectively. The researchers received 14,247
citations on the WoS database with a median of 385 citations per
researcher. The average number of citations per article was 8.2.
Conclusion: in this investigation, it was noted that researchers in the
field of Hematology/Oncology have a relevant scientific output from the
point of view of quantity and quality compared to other medical
specialties.

Abstract:
We studied the scientific literature in the field of astronomy published
in the Mexican Journal, Boletin de los Observatorios de Tonantzintla y
Tacubaya, from 1952 to 1972. We analyzed the articles published during
this important period of great changes in the production and
dissemination of scientific knowledge. Our goal is to identify
affiliation practices in the patterns of scientific communication. The
characteristics of citation practices were reviewed, particularly the
communication functions of references as rhetorical elements of
persuasion. Semiotic analysis was used, particularly the triadic model
of concept formation. Accordingly, it was possible to demonstrate new
roles of the Boletin articles within the framework of the system of
international communication. Semiotic interpretants reveal two
communication functions acquired by the texts: in the first case,
sources are accredited, and the second case, sources are accrediting, in
a mutual process of certification of knowledge found in scientific
journals.

Abstract:
This study sought to frame the thematic Target Costing in the framework
of progression of knowledge proposed by Ansari, Bell and Okano (2007).
To this end, we conducted a bibliometric study in 19 editions of the
Brazilian Congress Cost (BCC), which were selected 44 published articles
with topics Target Costing, Target Costing and Target Costing. Were
noted relevant opportunities for the development of future research at
the phases 'standing practice in the organizational context',
'connection with other management tools' and 'institutionalization and
diffusion' respectively. On the bibliometric analysis, using the
software UCINET (R), it was noted that Wellington Rock occupies the
central position in the network of researchers Target Costing in BCC,
being the author most influential and of most prestigious in the context
analyzed. Finally, it was observed that the books still remain the main
source of references, authors with more than one publication in the
proceedings of the CBC tend to perform research with different methods
over time and that future studies may adopt methodological procedures
survey research, action research and simulations.

Abstract:
Multi-instance (MI) learning is receiving growing attention in the
machine learning research field, in which learning examples are
represented by a bag of instances instead of a single instance.
K-nearest-neighbor (KNN) is a simple and effective classification model
in the traditional supervised learning. As its two variants,
Bayesian-KNN (BKNN) and Citation-KNN (CKNN) are proposed and are widely
used for solving multi-instance classification problems. However, CKNN
still applies the simplest majority vote approach among the references
and citers to classify unseen bags. In this paper, we propose an
improved algorithm called Bayesian Citation-KNN (BCKNN). For each unseen
bag, BCKNN firstly finds its k references and q citers respectively, and
then a Bayesian approach is applied to its k references and a distance
weighted majority vote approach is applied to its q citers. The
experimental results on several benchmark datasets show that our BCKNN
is generally better than previous BKNN and CKNN. Besides, BCKNN almost
maintains the same order of computational overhead as CKNN.

Abstract:
Since 2012, Google Scholar Metrics allows researchers to create an
online citations profile where their scientific and academic
publications are assessed with personalised bibliometric indicators such
as the ih index, the i10 index and the ih5 index, which refer to the
relation between a researchers' publications and their importance
according to peers. This article presents the results of a research
study about the use of the Google Scholar profile, the citation metrics,
the h indicators, and the traditional citations counting tools among
Communication researchers in Spain. This study also explores the new
research dissemination strategies that have derived from the use of the
h index in comparison to the *impact factor*.

Abstract:
Open Journal Systems supports activities related to editing and
publication of scientific journals and may also provide a platform to
house the journals as a portal of electronic journals. There is a
tendency of journals to be aggregated in institutional portals in
Brazil, so that 123 portals journals are analized. However, the presence
of journal portals can not guarantee the quality of its publications,
which can be measured by evaluating indexing systems. It is presented a
survey of the journals hosted on portals listed on SciELO and Latindex,
revealing a panorama of indexed journals in portals. Despite a greater
number of criteria, Latindex appears to be more flexible, showing a
greater amount of journals in its catalog, than those indexed by SciELO.

Abstract:
The development of Applied-information Technology and Internet make the
access of information resources more convenient and quicker, but the
inaccessibility of web citations becomes a prominent problem. Researches
about the web citations inaccessibility at home and abroad mostly
focused on the phenomenon and principle of the accessibility, however,
the solutions to the accessibility problem had not been studied so much,
and the relevant application systems were even less. The construction of
journal web citation accessibility system platform should emphasize
solutions to the "variability" of the location and content of
information resources. This platform may include the retrieval modules
of current and archive issues so as to realize the maximum retrieval and
present of web citations.

Abstract:
Digital humanities scholarship has regularly challenged characteristic
organizational features of academic life in the humanities. For example,
it is typically practiced in larger collaborative projects that produce
output very different from the traditional scholarly monograph. Digital
humanists often present their work in strikingly reflexive accounts that
are reminiscent of what science and technology studies scholars have
called infrastructural inversion, a method that defamiliarizes the
socio-material infrastructure of research to expose the inner workings
of knowledge production. At first sight, infrastructural inversion might
seem to constitute the opposite of the older concept of articulation
work, which designates the situated activity of coordinating and
managing cooperative work processes. It is more useful, however, to
think about infrastructural inversion as a specific form of articulation
work. The inversions performed by digital scholars serve to highlight
and problematize established ways of streamlining articulation work, for
example, through the established model of peer review, or by using
conventional forms of scholarly output. In turn, such systematic
defamiliarization opens up new and potentially competing ways of
imagining the organization of articulation work.

Abstract:
Researchers from diverse disciplines have examined the many factors that
contribute to the influence of published research papers. Such influence
dynamics are in essence a marketing of science issue. In this paper, we
propose that in addition to known established, overt drivers of
influence such as journal, article, author, and Matthew effects, a
latent factor "citability" influences the eventual impact of a paper.
Citability is a mid-range latent variable that captures the changing
relationship of an article to a field. Our analysis using a discretized
Tobit model with hidden Markov processes suggests that there are two
states of citability, and these dynamic states determine eventual
influence of a paper. Prior research in marketing has relied on models
where the various effects such as author and journal effects are deemed
static. Unlike ours, these models fail to capture the continuously
evolving impact dynamics of a paper and the differential effect of the
various drivers that depend on the latent state a paper is in at any
given point of time. Our model also captures the impact of uncitedness,
which other models fail to do. Our model is estimated using articles
published in seven leading marketing journals during the years
1996-2003. Findings and implications are discussed.

Abstract:
In a natural experiment on a popular German Question & Answer community
we investigate how user status demotion affects user activity levels in
online communities. The virtual reward system on this platform is
designed to activate the status seeking behavior of its members. The
members' status within the community is represented by the member's
rank. In the experiment the platform operator restructured the virtual
reward system, in the process reducing or abolishing the incentives for
selected activities on the platform. After restructuring nearly all
users saw their status demoted, with almost three quarters having lost
one rank, and more than a quarter having lost two or more ranks. We
identify the impact of status demotion by comparing how the members in
these two groups respond to the restructuring. We find that users who

Semiotic interpretants reveal two
communication functions acquired by the texts: in the first case,
sources are accredited, and the second case, sources are accrediting, in
a mutual process of certification of knowledge found in scientific
journals.

The study also found the
significant role that dissertations can play in tracking new research
directions.

Abstract:
The phenomenon of self-citation can present in many different forms,
including direct, co-author, collaborative, and coercive induced
self-citation. It can also pertain to the citation of single scientists,
groups of scientists, journals, and institutions. This article presents
some case studies of extreme self-citation practices. It also discusses
the implications of different types of self-citation. Self-citation is
not necessarily inappropriate by default. In fact, usually it is fully
appropriate but often it is even necessary. Conversely, inappropriate
self-citation practices may be highly misleading and may distort the
scientific literature. Coercive induced self-citation is the most
difficult to discover. Coercive Induced self-citation may happen
directly from reviewers of articles, but also indirectly from reviewers
of grants, scientific advisors who steer a research agenda, and leaders
of funding agencies who may espouse spending disproportionately large
funds in research domains that perpetuate their own self-legacy.
Inappropriate self-citation can be only a surrogate marker of what might
be much greater distortions of the scientific corpus towards conformity
to specific opinions and biases. Inappropriate self-citations eventually
affect also impact metrics. Different impact metrics vary in the extent
to which they can be gamed through self-citation practices. Citation
indices that are more gaming-proof are available and should be more
widely used. We need more empirical studies to dissect the impact of
different types of inappropriate self-citation and to examine the
effectiveness of interventions to limit them. (C) 2014 Published by

Author Keywords:

Self-citations were more common
in reviews recommending revision or acceptance (105 of 316 citations;

Abstract:
Women continue to be under-represented in the sciences, with their
representation declining at each progressive academic level. These
differences persist despite longrunning policies to ameliorate gender
inequity. We compared gender differences in exposure and visibility at
an evolutionary biology conference for attendees at two different
academic levels: student and post-PhD academic. Despite there being
almost exactly a 1:1 ratio of women and men attending the conference, we
found that when considering only those who presented talks, women spoke
for far less time than men of an equivalent academic level: on average
student women presented for 23% less time than student men, and academic
women presented for 17% less time than academic men. We conducted more
detailed analyses to tease apart whether this gender difference was
caused by decisions made by the attendees or through bias in evaluation
of the abstracts. At both academic levels, women and men were equally
likely to request a presentation. However, women were more likely than
men to prefer a short talk, regardless of academic level. We discuss
potential underlying reasons for this gender bias, and provide
recommendations to avoid similar gender biases at future conferences.

Semiotic interpretants reveal two
communication functions acquired by the texts: in the first case,
sources are accredited, and the second case, sources are accrediting, in
a mutual process of certification of knowledge found in scientific
journals.

This study also explores the new
research dissemination strategies that have derived from the use of the
h index in comparison to the impact factor.

Abstract:
This article is about the H-index, bibliometric indicator suggested by
Hirsch that measures the success of a researcher along his/her
professional career from two parameters: the link connecting the
scientific production of a particular author and the quotes about this
production by other authors. First of all, we will introduce this
indicator followed by the Internet resources to guarantee its quality in
order to calculate the H-index in a reliable and rigorous way, as for
Web of Knowledge and Scopus databases.
