This workshop will provide an opportunity for presentations and in-depth conversations on (alt-) metric-related issues, including the latest theories, approaches, applications, innovations, and tools. The workshop is envisioned as a combination of short presentations, posters and open discussion. SIG/MET is the Special Interest Group for the measurement of information production and use. It encourages the development and networking of all those interested in the measurement of information and, thus, encompasses not only bibliometrics and scientometrics, but informetrics in a larger sense including measurement of the Web and the Internet, applications running on these platforms, and metrics related to network analysis, visualization, and scholarly communication. Hence, metric research recently expanded beyond traditional research products - such as articles and citations - to include web-based products, such as blogs, tweets and other social media, so-called altmetrics. These social media are changing some of the ways research is being disseminated and, in turn, influences the field of metrics. Research on metrics has been growing significantly over the last decades. In addition to account for a significant proportion of the literature published in core LIS journals, there is also a large proportion of metrics literature published in general science journals as well as in medical journals. Recent workshops on the topics have been largely successful. For instance, SIG/MET already held five workshops at ASIS&T's annual meetings that steadily increased their number of attendees. As in previous years, the SIG recognized outstanding student contributions, with one session devoted to presenting these awards and presentations by the recipients. The 2015 workshop would continue in this vein and consolidate the work done in previous iterations of the workshop. We propose to include presentations from both established researchers and students, all done in an informal setting where genuine exchanges can be made. The topics covered would include the following but are not limited to: - Theories of the publication process, citations and social media in scholarly communication - New indicators and methods, especially altmetrics and social media metrics - Tools, platforms, research infrastructure - technological development and metrics - Impact of indicators (evaluation, information retrieval, research management, etc.) - Metrics in a library, archive and other institutional setting - Open access, open science and metrics - Limitations, misuses and adverse effects of metrics - the ethics of metrics - The challenge of interdisciplinarity - Visualizations of scholarly impact measures and analyses Submissions Submissions should be in the form of a two-page extended abstract. Conceptual, empirical, and works-in-progress will be accepted for submission. Where appropriate, up to three figures/tables can be provided. Two types of submissions will be accepted: posters and presentations. Please indicate the type of submission in bold at the beginning of your submission. The requirements for both formats are the same. Posters will provide scholars with a format for presenting works-in-progress and works that are best presented visually. Every poster will be introduced in a poster pitch-format. The presentations will be an opportunity for researchers and professionals to present and discuss research that is more fully developed. The abstracts of accepted papers and posters as well as the presentation slides will be published on figshare (http://figshare.com), that allocates DOIs to uploaded content, and linked from the SIG/MET website to enhance visibility and retrievability of presented research. Please submit in .pdf, .doc or .docx to: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=sigmet2015 Peer-Review process Each submission will be reviewed and brief feedback will be given in narrative format. Awards This year Altmetric.com (www.altmetric.com) and Figshare have kindly offered to award a cash prize for the best paper on research related to altmetrics or social media metrics. Outstanding research papers from students will also be awarded in a Student Paper Contest sponsored by Elsevier. The first author of the paper entered into this contest must be a full-time student at the time of submission, irrespective of ASIS&T or SIG/MET membership. For more information please refer to http://www.asis.org/SIG/SIGMET/activities/2015-asist-sigmet-student-paper-contest/. The winners of both awards will be selected by the SIG/MET officers from the accepted submissions presented in St. Louis. It would be great if you could take part in this survey. The link is below. We would like to invite you to participate in a web survey on higher search activities in Digital Libraries (DLs). This survey aims to understand the usage of higher search activities in Digital Libraries (DLs). What is the survey about? If you choose to complete this survey, you will help us to identify possible requirements for supporting higher search activities in retrieval sessions. Higher search activities are for example: * Reading or browsing a journal or conference proceedings central to one's topic of interest * Using citations to determine which other works have cited a certain document * Following footnotes or references to other related materials Filling out the survey will take approximately 5 minutes. We do not collect any sensitive personal data and the results will be anonymous. Participation in the survey is voluntary and you are free to withdraw or discontinue participation at any time. Although the Oxford 2013 "Statement on Open Access" had been rather weak and vague, it has now been reinforced by *Open Access Oxford*'s 2015 system for implementing HEFCE/REF2020 , and this time it's the optimal system. Now all that's needed in order to monitor and ensure compliance is to *make the date-of-acceptance (year, month, day) field in the Oxford repository (ORA ) a mandatory field* (and advise authors to make sure to retain their acceptance letter for possible audit). The repository software can then calculate the (likewise mandatory) deposit date D and the Acceptance date A and subtract D - A. *If D - A < 3 (months) then the article is HEFCE-compliant and eligible for REF2020. * If D - A > 3 then the author is alerted that the article risks not being eligible for REF2020 and that for future articles D - A must be less than 3 months. *Automated D-A monitoring and feedback to authors should be continuous and immediate.* HEFCE/REF2020 will probably be flexible about the start-up 1-2 years, but not longer than that. Oxford is right to get the system in place as early as possible. We are continuing as planned with preparations for a single, simple message for open access: Act on Acceptance. Over the summer, we are putting in place mechanisms to ensure all researchers employed by the collegiate University are able to deposit their article manuscripts in our repository ORA within 3 months of acceptance by the journal - to meet HEFCE?s OA requirements and the general push to improve the accessibility of research.Research Services, the Libraries and IT Services are in the middle of this work, and will be producing materials and guidance for departments & researchers from Autumn 2015. This is when our campaign around ?act on acceptance? will begin so as to be ready for HEFCE?s policy start date of 1 April 2016. We will provide further information later in the summer. If you have any questions please contact our email helpline: open-access-enquiries at bodleian.ox.ac.uk .* -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... A total of 1989 records from Scopus bibliographic database, published from 2003 to 2012, were analyzed. The Scopus database was preferred over the Web of Science as it provided considerably more hits for the phrase 'information literacy'. Other possible synonyms for the concept of information literacy were ignored to minimize the retrieval of irrelevant documents. MS Excel as well as specific Scopus analytical tools were used for data analysis. Some areas covered in the data analysis included: annual growth in information literacy publications, preferred journals for publishing information literacy articles, most prolific authors, top countries producing information literacy literature, and publication distribution by subject. It was found that the number of information literacy publications have increased steadily during the last ten years. It was also revealed that a majority of information literacy publication were written by authors from North America and the United Kingdom. There are numerous aggregation techniques of such sequences, e.g., the g-index, the h-index, that may be used to compare the output of pairs of agents. In this paper we address a question whether such impact indices may be used to model experts' preferences accurately. To illustrate these indices, literature on the field of tribology covered in SCOPUS during 1998 - 2012 is used. As tribology is highly interdisciplinary in nature, which can be demonstrated by the indices, both indices can be used for other subject disciplines. However, when it comes to discovering clusters in informetric data sets that consist of non-increasingly ordered vectors of not necessarily conforming lengths, such a method cannot be applied directly. Hence, in this paper, we propose a K-means-like algorithm to determine groups of producers that are similar not only with respect to the quality of information resources they output, but also their quantity. We propose the use of some bibliometrics measures as the way to quantify the quality of both items and users. The system takes into account the measured quality as the main factor for the re-ranking of the top-N recommendations list in order to point researchers to the latest and the best papers in their domain. To prove the accuracy improvement, we conduct a study involving different recommendation approaches. The results obtained proved to be satisfactory within the research departments who took part on the tests. The authors propose an adaptation of RC to evaluate the personal impact factor of research centers, hospitals and other research groups. Thus, these could be classified according to the accredited impact of the results of their scientific work between researchers of the same scientific area. This could be useful for channelling budgets and grants for research. (C) 2013 SEP y SEPB. Published by Elsevier Espana, S.L.U. All rights reserved. There are numerous aggregation techniques of such sequences, e.g., the g-index, the h-index, that may be used to compare the output of pairs of agents. In this paper we address a question whether such impact indices may be used to model experts' preferences accurately. Qualitative and Mixed Methods in Research Policy (QMM2015) Workshop Exploring Qualitative and Mixed Methodological Approaches in the Evaluation and Research Policy Field 1-2 October, 2015 Brunel University London London, United Kingdom. http://www.brunel.ac.uk/herg/qual-and-mm-workshop Current and future challenges in the field of Research and Evaluation Policy require researchers to embrace broader methodological approaches. This includes moving beyond strong quantitative tools such as bibliometrics, network analysis and econometrics, towards adopting sophisticated qualitative and/or mixed methodological research designs. Supported by the British Academy, this workshop aims to showcase current research involving qualitative or mixed methodological research designs in the research evaluation and innovation policy field. We also aim to work towards establishing an international network of researchers interested in strengthening the quality and reputation of qualitative and mixed methodological research studies in the field. To this end, through presentation of submissions, and related discussion, participants will work together to establish clear guidelines of good practice for qualitative and mixed methodological studies in the field. Who should attend? Both researchers in the field as well as EU and UK policymakers would benefit from the research presentations, discussions and networking opportunities offered at the workshop. All interested participants are encouraged to register prior to attending by contacting Gemma Derrick on gemma.derrick at brunel.ac.uk. We look forward to welcoming you to London in October. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... First, this set can be organized in a relational database using ISI.exe . ISI.exe uses as input the download in the tagged format of the WoS which is available in the same folder and named "data.txt" (see at http://www.leydesdorff.net/software/isi for further explanation). The output is a set of databases (.dbf) which can be read using Excel or SPSS. For example, authors are organized into au.dbf and addresses into cs.dbf. (The various files are related in terms of the field "nr;" MSAccess can be used for relational database management.) The resulting files can be used by fraction.exe as input. This program will add au2.dbf and cs2.dbf to the dbf-files generated by isi.exe. 1. Au2.dbf contains additional to the fields in au.dbf, the fields "tc" (times cited), "tc_au" (times cited/author), and "npub_au" (fractional count of the publication). One can, for example, read au2.dbf into excel and use a pivot table for generating a fractional count of the authorship of the authors in the set. 2. Cs2.dbf contains similar fields, but normalizes in terms of the number of unique addresses attributed to the publication in the C1-field of WoS. For example, if a paper contains three addresses of which two are the same, each address obtains half a point (and not 1/3 and 2/3). The RP-field of WoS is not used since it usually extends on one of the other addresses. Records before 2008 are not used because the address fields before this date are not consistently organized in WoS. 3. Additionally, a scratch file core2.dbf is generated that is equal to core.dbf, but to which the various fields under 1. and 2. are added at the end. This does not add new information and can be disregarded. The routine overwrites files with the same names in each next run. August 26, 2015. However, little is known about the relative importance of awards and the relationships between awards. This study aims to establish a comprehensive global map of important international academic awards, which visually presents the relative reputations of awards and the close or distant relationships between awards. By surveying the reputations of the preselected 207 awards, 90 important international academic awards with above-average reputations were identified. Then, based on the number of "awardees in common" or named "co-awardees" between every pair of these 90 awards, a network of co-awardees was built. Finally, using mapping software of VOSviewer, these 90 important international academic awards were mapped by taking the reputation scores as the weights of awards and the network of co-awardees as the basis of the relationships between awards. Formal concept analysis (FCA) provides a new perspective for knowledge discovery and data mining. In this paper we introduce a FCA-based approach to detect intellectual structure of library and information science (LIS). Our approach relies on the mathematical theory which formulates the understanding of "concept" as a unit of extension (scholars) and intension (keywords) as a way of modelling the intellectual structure of a domain. By analyzing the papers published in sixteen prominent journals of LIS domain from 2001 to 2013, the intellectual structure of LIS in the new century has been identified and visualized. Nine major research themes of LIS were detected together with the core keywords and authors to describe each theme. The significant advantage of our approach is that the mathematical formulae produce a conceptual structure which automatically provides generalization and specialization relationships among the concepts. This provides additional information not available from other methods, especially when shared interests of authors from different granularities are also visualized in concept lattice. It focuses on: profile of scholars using TV content; the structure of their need for TV content; the situations in which scholars need TV content; and their patterns of use of TV content in each research stage. Design/methodology/approach - Taylor's four components of the information use environment has contributed to the development of a conceptual framework. The data from the use of TV content by 668 scholars were profiled using correspondence analysis and co-word analysis. Additionally, the data from 15 interviews and content from 240 journal articles were analysed. Findings - The authors determined that the environment of the scholarly use of TV content is unique in terms of the scholars' academic domains, research topics, motivation, and patterns of use. Six academic domains were identified as having used TV content to a meaningful degree, and their knowledge structure was presented as a map depicting the scholars' needs for TV content. Scholars are likely to use TV content when they deal with timely social and cultural topics, or human behaviour. The scholars also showed different patterns of use of TV content at each stage of research. Originality/value - In this study, TV content was newly examined from the perspective of an information source for scholarly purposes, and it was found to be a meaningful source in several domains. This result extends the knowledge of information sources in scholarly communication and information services. There are at least three reasons why it is important to identify these sub-fields accurately. First, to give insight into the structure of the subject area and identify perhaps unrecognised commonalities; second, for the purpose of normalising citation data as it is well-known that citation rates vary significantly between different disciplines. And third, because journal rankings and lists tend to split their classifications into different subjects-for example, the Association of Business Schools list, which is a standard in the UK, has 22 different fields. Unfortunately, at the moment these are created in an ad-hoc manner with no underlying rigour. The purpose of this paper is to identify possible sub-fields in B&M rigorously based on actual citation patterns. We have examined 450 journals in B&M, which are included in the ISI Web of Science and analysed the cross-citation rates between them enabling us to generate sets of coherent and consistent sub-fields that minimise the extent to which journals appear in several categories. Implications and limitations of the analysis are discussed. Addresses: [Mingers, John] Univ Kent, Canterbury CT2 7PE, Kent, England. [Leydesdorff, Loet] Univ Amsterdam, Amsterdam, Netherlands. Design/methodology/approach - This synthesis is achieved through a purposive review of three types of literature: explicit conceptualizations of disciplinarity; narrative histories of disciplines; and operationalizations of disciplinarity. Findings - Each angle of discussing disciplinarity presents distinct criteria. However, there are a few common axes upon which conceptualizations, disciplinary narratives, and measurements revolve: communication, social features, topical coherence, and institutions. Originality/value - There is considerable ambiguity in the concept of a discipline. This is of particular concern in a heightened assessment culture, where decisions about funding and resource allocation are often discipline-dependent (or focussed exclusively on interdisciplinary endeavors). This work explores the varied nature of disciplinarity and, through synthesis of the literature, presents a framework of criteria that can be used to guide science policy makers, scientometricians, administrators, and others interested in defining, constructing, and evaluating disciplines. ASIS&T WORKSHOP ON INFORMETRIC AND SCIENTOMETRIC RESEARCH Workshop sponsored by ASIS&T SIG/MET ASIS&T 2015 Annual Meeting Saturday, November 7th, 2015, 9:00am ?5:00pm Hyatt Regency St. Louis at the Arch, US CALL FOR ABSTRACTS The ASIS&T Special Interest Group for Metrics (SIG/MET) will host a workshop prior to the ASIS&T Annual Meeting in St. Louis, Missouri. Hence, metric research recently expanded beyond traditional research products ? such as articles and citations ? to include web-based products, such as blogs, tweets and other social media, so-called altmetrics. For instance, SIG/MET already held five workshops at ASIS&T?s annual meetings that steadily increased their number of attendees. The topics covered would include the following but are not limited to: - Theories of the publication process, citations and social media in scholarly communication - New indicators and methods, especially altmetrics and social media metrics - Tools, platforms, research infrastructure - technological development and metrics - Impact of indicators (evaluation, information retrieval, research management, etc.) - Metrics in a library, archive and other institutional setting - Open access, open science and metrics - Limitations, misuses and adverse effects of metrics ? the ethics of metrics - The challenge of interdisciplinarity - Visualizations of scholarly impact measures and analyses Submissions Submissions should be in the form of a two-page extended abstract. For more information please refer to http://www.asis.org/SIG/SIGMET/activities/2015-asist-sigmet-student-paper-co ntest/. The winners of both awards will be selected by the SIG/MET officers from the accepted submissions presented in St. Louis. Deadline: 30^th November 2015 Motivation In a knowledge-based economy, science and technology are omnipresent and their importance is undisputed. Equally evident is the need to allocate resources (both monetary and labor) in an effective way to foster innovation. In the last decades, science policy has embraced scientometrics to gain insights into the structure and evolution of science and devised diverse metrics and indicators. However, it has not invested significant efforts into modelling the dynamics of science, technology, and/or innovation (STI) (mathematically, statistically, and computationally). While it may not be possible to predict the nature and essence of the next scientific or technological innovation, it is often possible to predict the circumstances leading to it, i.e., where it is most likely to happen and under which conditions. Some examples are: Which career paths are more likely to lead to high impact works? Which funding system has the highest return on investments? Which institutions will be most productive over the next years? This special issue calls for models which predict/forecast the structure and/or dynamics of STI. The focus is on mathematical, statistical, and computational models, but we do not exclude qualitative models as long as they can be used to develop scenarios of future STI dynamics. New insights about STI can be gained by comparing and relating different kinds of models, including data, statistical, observational, psychological and computational. This special issue aims to present a state of the art in terms such computational models. Submission Deadlines Please feel free to contact the editors with paper proposals. Submit full papers by 30^th November 2015. Reviews will become available begin of January 2016. Final papers are due February 29, 2016.
