*Assistant Director for Research Administration/Academic Specialist*

Indiana University is making a multi-year, multi-million dollar 
investment to create and expand the infrastructure for research and 
training in network science through the establishment of the Indiana 
University Network Science Institute (IUNI).

IUNI seeks applicants for the Assistant Director for Research 
Administration/Academic Specialist.  This position will be appointed for 
a two-year term at the rank of Academic Specialist with the possibility 
of renewal based on exemplary performance and continued funding.  The 
ideal candidate will have a Master’s degree and preferably some PhD 
experience in a scientific discipline with a focus on network methods 
and approaches.  The primary role of this position is to identify major 
emergent grant opportunities working with the IUNI Scientific Leadership 
Team, identifying and linking funding opportunities relevant to 
collaborations and shared research projects and related activities.  
Convene potential collaborators around targeted funding opportunities 
and advise faculty and staff on the proposal process, prepare project 
budgets and justifications, review and edit applications, ensure 
appropriate internal documents are initiated through KC, and track grant 
submissions and awards for IUNI metrics. Responsible for review, 
preparation and submission of proposals for external funding. Work with 
Principal Investigators to prepare and submit any required research 
performance progress reports, including, closeout of expired accounts. 
Assist IUNI faculty with scientific meetings, conferences or special 
projects relevant to IUNI goals. Prepare news releases and other 
materials that require a science writer.  This position reports to the 
Executive Director.

Qualifications
Minimum Education: Master’s degree required, preferably some PhD 
experience in a scientific discipline with a focus on network methods 
and approaches.

Minimum Experience: 5 years’ experience in research grant 
administration.  Direct research experience and/or research project 
management experience can be substituted for grants administration 
experience.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities: Must be proficient in MS 
Word, Excel, , Outlook and internet IE/Firefox and have the flexibility 
to adapt to additional software technology and platforms preferred by 
the research teams, particularly those involved in network science. 
Strong leadership skills with the ability to build high performing teams 
and to lead in a team-management environment with minimal hierarchy. 
Excellent problem solving skills with a high level of initiative and 
ability to develop innovative solutions to challenges. Promotes 
extraordinary organizational performance by bringing positive energy and 
enthusiasm. Able to effectively work with diverse set of internal and 
external clients. Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
