Abstract:
In this article, we explore the meanings of objectual practice that are
revealed by examining embedded information structures and
performativity. We conceptualize a network of practice as a nexus of
interconnected practice, formed around materially mediated
interdependencies across communities of practice. Drawing on
ethnographic fieldwork of archaeology research, conducted across
multiple research disciplines and communities of practice, we identify
the material components of embedded information and explicate the
processes by which objectual and social practices shape the adoption of
theories across the network, creating knowledge-in-practice. We
conceptualize knowledge construction as a product of the constant
tension between contextualization and decontextualization (embeddedness
and disembeddedness). Our findings demonstrate the mechanisms by which
exploratory interactions with the information embedded in things
(research objects) produce breakdowns that reveal inconsistencies within
current theories.

Abstract:
The number of citations a paper receives is the most commonly used
measure of scientific impact. In this paper, we study not only the
number but also the type of citations that 659 marketing articles
generated. We discern five citation types: application, affirmation,
negation, review and perfunctory mention (i.e., citing an article only
indirectly without really using it). Prior literature in scientometrics
recognizes that the former three types, on average, signal a higher
level of scientific indebtedness than the latter two types. In our
sample, these three types of citation represent only 15% of all
citations. We also find different determinants of citation behavior
across citation types. Across the 49 determinants we included, only 13
have the same effect across all citation types, of which only 5 are
statistically significant across all citation types. For instance, we
find a significant inverted U-effect of challenging commonly held
beliefs on citation counts, but only for three of the citation types:
affirmation, review and perfunctory mention. Our results encourage
scientific stakeholders to move beyond mere citation counts to assess a
paper's or a scholar's scientific contribution, as well as to devote
greater attention to the citation process itself. (C) 2014 The Authors.

Abstract:
Research collaboration occurs more frequently today than in the past. As
a consequence, cooperation and competition are crucial determinants of
academic success. In multiauthored publications, not all authors
contribute evenly. Hence, some authors end up with less time or
resources to work on parallel projects, decreasing their number of
publications. Although detailed information on the contribution of each
author in multiauthored publications is generally not available, the
order of authors often discloses information on differential
contributions. Here we analyze the full data set of Physical Review
journals to show that, along with the increasingly number of
multiauthored publications, first authors incur costs and last authors
are bestowed benefits in terms of number of publications. In other
words, authors publishing more often as first authors have fewer
publications in the short-term than authors publishing more often as
last authors. Using a simplified network representation where direct
links represent the costly action of first authors towards last authors,
we analyze the evolution of cooperation in multiauthored publications.

Abstract:
The increasing dominance of team science highlights the importance of
understanding the effects of team composition on the creativity of
research results. In this paper, we analyze the effect of team size, and
field and task variety on creativity. Furthermore, we unpack two facets
of creativity in science: novelty and impact. We find that increasing
team size has an inverted-U shaped relation with novelty. We also find
that the size-novelty relationship is largely due to the relation
between size and team field or task variety, consistent with the
information processing perspective. On the other hand, team size has a
continually increasing relation with the likelihood of a high-impact
paper. Furthermore, variety does not have a direct effect on impact, net
of novelty. This study develops our understanding of team science and
highlights the need for a governance approach to scientific work. We
also advance the creativity literature by providing an ex ante objective
bibliometric measure that distinguishes novelty from impact, and
illustrate the distinct team-level drivers of each. We conclude with a
discussion of the policy implications of our findings. (C) 2014 Elsevier

Abstract:
Purpose - This study aims to map scientific knowledge in industrial
marketing.
Design/methodology/approach - The research was conducted on the basis of
a quantitative and descriptive research using scientometric analysis
based on scientific records. It analyzes more than 14,000 scientific
records on the Scopus database from 1956 to 2009. The sample fits
Bradford's and Lotka's power laws of distribution of science in use.
Findings - The study reveals the existence of four stages: the genesis
of this stream of research (1956-1984), the early development
(1985-1995), the consolidation of production (1996-2003) and the phase
of scientific maturity (from 2004) with an increasing number of records
in recent years. Regarding authorship, there is a clear predominance of
single authorship and an average increase in the number of authors per
record from one to two authors for recent years. The main sources of
knowledge are the Journal of Business & Industrial Marketing and the
Industrial Marketing Management journal. A statistical significance is
shown between the number of records and the number of papers per
journal, highlighting that Management Science and Industrial Marketing
Management journals are the most cited sources.
Practical implications - Practitioners find in this paper a sound basis
for a wide perspective of the key issues addressed by researchers on
industrial marketing over the past decades, as well as good insights in
terms of the main challenges faced by companies in this field.
Originality/value - Evidence was found of the existence of a long tail
behavior in scientific literature of industrial marketing regarding
chronology, sources, number of records with a single author and number
of records cited.

Title:
A Life Course Trajectory Framework for Understanding the Intracohort Pattern of Wage Inequality

Abstract:
Much research has been devoted to cross-sectional and intercohort
patterns of wage inequality, but relatively little is known about the
mechanisms for the intracohort pattern of wage inequality. To fill this
intellectual gap, this article establishes a life course trajectory
(LCT) framework for understanding the intracohort pattern of wage
inequality. First, the author proposes and conceptualizes three
essential properties of the LCT framework (random variability,
trajectory heterogeneity, and cumulative advantage) that are used to
establish a mathematical formalization of the LCT framework. Both the
conceptualization and the formalization imply that intracohort wage
inequality will increase over the life course due to random variability,
trajectory heterogeneity, and cumulative advantage. Finally, the author
combines the LCT framework with the multilevel growth curve model, then
applies the model to data from the NLSY79, and finds support for the
significance of random variability, trajectory heterogeneity, and
between-group cumulative advantage properties but not the within-group
cumulative advantage property.

Abstract:
Background/Objective: Telemedicine and teledermatology literature has a
limited number of bibliometrics reports. We aimed to analyze
telemedicine and teledermatology literature using the Institute for
Scientific Information Web of Science database.
Methods: The statistical analysis of the documents published during
1980-2013 was performed. We also analyzed the correlations between
economical productivities, humanity index, and technological advancement
levels and performances of the countries in both fields.
Results: The USA ranked first in the telemedicine field with 3204
publications and 33.8% of the world production followed by the UK and
Germany. In the teledermatology field, the USA was the first country
again with 206 papers (36%) followed by the UK and Australia (104 and 50
papers, respectively). The most productive countries in telemedicine
were Cyprus (30.03), Norway (28.19), and Australia (19.61). Austria
ranked first (4.94) in terms of productivity in teledermatology followed
by Norway (3.13), New Zealand (2.43), and Australia (2.13). A high
correlation was found between number of publications and 2013 gross
domestic product values of 60 countries (r = 0.804, p < 0.001 for
telemedicine and r = 0.721, p < 0.001 for teledermatology). A high
correlation was detected between the number of telemedicine publications
and gross domestic product per hour worked (r = 0.712, p < 0.001)
although moderate correlation was measured in teledermatology field (r =
0.558, p < 0.05). We found a significant correlation between number of
publications and human development index (r = 0.779, p < 0.001 for
telemedicine and r = 0.767, p < 0.001 for teledermatology). Conclusion:
Most items have been published from high-income, developed
countries. Thus the physicians in undeveloped and developing countries,
in which telemedicine and teledermatology applications are crucial to
deliver medical care and services, should be encouraged to perform novel
studies. Copyright (C) 2014. Taiwanese Dermatological Association.

Abstract:
Objective: To explore the scientific output on transsexuality in the
Spanish biomedical literature between 1973 and 2011, through
bibliometric and content analyses.
Methods: We carried out a descriptive, cross-sectional study of Spanish
biomedical articles on transsexuality published between 1973 and 2011.
The data sources consisted of Indice Medico Espanol and ISOC-Ciencias
Sociales y Humanidades. Bibliometric and content analyses were
performed.
Results: A total of 65 papers were analyzed. Knowledge on transsexuality
in Spain began to appear in medical journals between 1973 and 1984. A
decade of intense productivity began in 1996 and the number of journals
publishing articles on transsexuality multiplied in the following years.
Until 2006, the year with the most biomedical productivity, biomedical
discourses reproduced representations of transsexuality anchored in
biological determinism. From 2008-2011, professionals writing on the
topic incorporated feminist theories and social perspectives in their
discourses.
Conclusions: In the last quarter of the twentieth century, the dominant
medical discourse considered manifestations of transsexual people from a
biologist perspective that conceives transsexuality as a configuration
mismatch between sex and gender. The emergence of new identity
categories and medical reflection from non-essentialist and
non-normative gender perspectives has improved the clinical management
of transsexuality. (C) 2014 SESPAS. Published by Elsevier Espana, S.L.U.

Abstract:
Objective: To explore alternative bibliometric markers to the
well-established journal *impact factor*. The bibliometric evolution of
a leading ENT journal over a six year period is discussed with critical
analysis of a predetermined set of bibliometric alternatives to the
journal *impact factor*.
Design: Retrospective review of the bibliometric performance of Clinical
Otolaryngology over a six year period.
Results: The results of the study reveal that Clinical Otolaryngology
has made steady bibliometric progress when the *impact factor* (IF) is
considered with a gradual increase in *impact factor* from 1.098 in 2006
to a peak of 2.393 in 2011. Self-citation rates reported by the Journal
Citation Report (JCR) demonstrated a significant decline during 2007
with a reported self-citation rate of 0%. The SCImago Journal Rank (SIR)
database however recorded a self-citation rate of 67. Independent
evaluation demonstrated a 56 self-citations during this period. The
percentage of review articles published remained stable during the
period in question. A lagged association between the number of review
manuscripts and the IF failed to demonstrate any significant correlation
(r = -0.19). Comparison between the IF and the Eigen factor (EF) as well
as the SJR yielded negative correlation (r = -0.46) and (r = -0.35)
respectively. The Article Influence score (AIS) and Source Normalised
Impact per Paper (SNIP) were the only bibliometric alternatives to
demonstrate a positive correlation when compared to the IF (r = 0.94)
and (r = 0.66) respectively.
Conclusions: The necessity of bibliometric markers cannot be called into
question however the most widely employed of these, the journal *impact
factor* has come under increased scrutiny of late. Despite some of the
advantages offered by novel bibliometric markers, these do not
necessarily compare favourably to the IF with regards to bibliometric
performance. The only two markers to demonstrate a positive correlation
when compared to the IF were the AI score and SNIP which would suggest
that these are potential alternatives to the IF and have the added
advantage that they are open access. (C) 2013 Royal College of Surgeons

Abstract:
A common consensus among researchers is that interdisciplinarity is one
of the key factors in doing research at current time. However, a
pertinent question deals with identifying appropriate indicators of
interdisciplinarity. Using a set of citation based indicators, here we
investigate the evolution of the extent of interdisciplinary research in
computer science and physics in the period 1975-2008. For this, we study
the citation networks of these two domains from different orthogonal
directions, namely citation and reference patterns of a paper,
overlapping membership of the papers in different research communities,
inclination of the researchers to adopt new fields, and propose several
indices to quantify the degree of interdisciplinarity of a field. The
new indices of interdisciplinarity corroborate with the hypothesis that
the emergence of interdisciplinarity occurs through cross-fertilization
of ideas between the sub-fields that otherwise have little overlap as
they are studied independently. At the end, we analyze the
core-periphery organization of citation networks and arrive to the
conclusion that with the advancement of interdisciplinary research, the
core part of the network is also changing from theoretical towards more
applied fields of research.

Abstract:
In this article, we explore the meanings of objectual practice that are
revealed by examining embedded information structures and
performativity. We conceptualize a network of practice as a nexus of
interconnected practice, formed around materially mediated
interdependencies across communities of practice. Drawing on
ethnographic fieldwork of archaeology research, conducted across
multiple research disciplines and communities of practice, we identify
the material components of embedded information and explicate the
processes by which objectual and social practices shape the adoption of
theories across the network, creating knowledge-in-practice. We
conceptualize knowledge construction as a product of the constant
tension between contextualization and decontextualization (embeddedness
and disembeddedness). Our findings demonstrate the mechanisms by which
exploratory interactions with the information embedded in things
(research objects) produce breakdowns that reveal inconsistencies within
current theories.

Abstract:
PURPOSE: To examine the relative qualifications of expert witnesses
testifying on behalf of plaintiffs vs defendants in ophthalmology
malpractice litigation. DESIGN: Correlational and descriptive study;
analysis of expert witness and physician demographic data available on
several databases.
METHODS: The West law legal database was searched for ophthalmologist
expert witness. testimony from January 2006 to June 2014. Physician
demographic data were used as the main outcome measures, including
length of experience, scholarly impact (as measured by the h-index),
practice setting, and fellowship training status and were Obtained from
state medical licensing board sites and online medical facility and
practice sites. H-indices were obtained from the Scopus database.
RESULTS: Defendant and plaintiff expert witnesses had comparable mean
years of experience (32.9 and 35.7, respectively) (P =.12) and scholarly
impact (h-index = 8.6 and 8.3, respectively) (P = .42). Cases tended to
resolve on the side of the expert witness with the higher h-index (P =
.04). Significantly higher proportions of defendant witnesses were in
academic practice (P < .05) and underwent fellowship training (P <
.001).
CONCLUSION: Ophthalmologist expert witnesses testifying for both
plaintiffs and defendants had over 30 years of experience and high
scholarly impact. Practitioners testifying on behalf of plaintiffs were
statistically less likely to work in an academic setting and have
subspecialty training. Scholarly impact of expert witnesses appeared to
affect trial outcomes. Surgical societies should stringently police for
appropriate expert witness testimony given by both plaintiff and defense
experts in malpractice litigation. (C) 2015 by Elsevier Inc. All rights
