Title:
Facts Are More Important Than Novelty: Replication in the Education Sciences

Authors:
Makel, MC; Plucker, JA

Abstract:
Despite increased attention to methodological rigor in education
research, the field has focused heavily on experimental design and not
on the merit of replicating important results. The present study
analyzed the complete publication history of the current top 100
education journals ranked by 5-year *impact factor* and found that only
0.13% of education articles were replications. Contrary to previous
findings in medicine, but similar to psychology, the majority of
education replications successfully replicated the original studies.
However, replications were significantly less likely to be successful
when there was no overlap in authorship between the original and
replicating articles. The results emphasize the importance of
third-party, direct replications in helping education research improve
its ability to shape education policy and practice.

Abstract:
Enlightened by Avramescu's studies, we classified the citation patterns
of high-quality and high-impact publicationsinto five mathematical
types: lognormal-type, exponential-type, polynomial-type, wave-type and
sleeping-beauty. Based on practical datasets of high-quality and
high-impact publications, the five types of citation patterns are fitted
well at statistical level. The results reveal that high-quality
publications usually appear irregular citation curves (wave-type and
sleeping-beauty) and high-impact publications tend to show regular ones
(lognormal-type, exponential-type and polynomial-type).

Abstract:
Journal rankings published by Journal Citation Reports (JCR) are widely
used to assess research quality, which influences important decisions by
academic departments, universities, and countries in the allocation of
research funds. We study refereed law journal rankings by JCR and
Washington and Lee Law Library (W&L). JCR's rankings are uncorrelated
with W&L's. The differences appear to be attributable to
underrepresentation of law journals in JCR's database. We illustrate the
effects of database bias on rankings through case studies of three elite
journals, the Journal of Law and Economics, Supreme Court Review, and
the American Law and Economics Review.

IDENTIFYING THE EFFECT OF OPEN ACCESS ON CITATIONS USING A PANEL OF SCIENCE JOURNALS

Abstract:
An open-access journal allows free online access to its articles,
obtaining revenue from fees charged to submitting authors or from
institutional support. Using panel data on science journals, we are able
to circumvent problems plaguing previous studies of the impact of open
access on citations. In contrast to the huge effects found in these
previous studies, we find a more modest effect: moving from paid to open
access increases cites by 8% on average in our sample. The benefit is
concentrated among top-ranked journals. In fact, open access causes a
statistically significant reduction in cites to the bottom-ranked
journals in our sample, leading us to conjecture that open access may
intensify competition among articles for readers' attention, generating
losers as well as winners.

Abstract:
Objectives: This paper compares the journal coverage of the British
Nursing Index (BNI) and the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied
Health Literature (CINAHL). The main objectives are to assess whether
BNI is a useful source of UK publications and to consider the
implications for information professionals.
Methods: Lists of the journals indexed in BNI and CINAHL, CINAHL Plus
and CINAHL Complete were compared. The date coverage and article entry
date of a selection of UK nursing journals were also compared.
Results: One hundred and fifty-nine journals are uniquely indexed in BNI
compared with the basic version of CINAHL. Eighty-one journals are
uniquely indexed in BNI compared with all versions of CINAHL. Fifty-one
of these journals are UK publications. Most of the selected UK nursing
journals have earlier start and entry dates in CINAHL than BNI.
Conclusion: BNI is smaller than CINAHL, and BNI indexes a relatively
small number of unique journals. An information professional with access
to CINAHL Plus or CINAHL Complete could reasonably not search BNI for a
nursing topic, particularly if the topic is not UK specific. UK nursing
research is more likely to benefit from using BNI, although the
acquisition of BNI by ProQuest could impact this finding.

Abstract:
We used bibliometric analysis methodology in the expanded Science
Citation Index to identify highly-cited electrocardiogram (ECG)-related
articles with total citations (TC2012) exceeding 100 from the
publication year to 2012. Web of Science search tools were used to
identify the highly-cited articles. The aspects analyzed for highly
cited publications included effect of time on citation analysis,
journals and Web of Science categories, number of authors per
publication, originating institutions and countries, total citation and
total citation per year life cycles of articles (C2012) and research
hotspots. Results showed that a total of 467 electrocardiogram-related
publications were regarded as the highly-cited publications. TC2012
ranged from 101 to 2879, with 215 as the average number of citations. No
highly-cited publications have emerged yet during the first two years of
the present 2010 Decade. All 11 countries and institutions originating
highly-cited ECG-related publications were developed countries, USA in 9
of them. Four subject categories were identified as hotspots by total
citations TC2012 and C2012: atrial fibrillation, long QT syndrome,
angina and myocardial infarction, and risk factor analysis and health
evaluation. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
Background: Methodological search filters are tools for retrieving
database records reporting studies which use a specific research method.
Choosing a filter is likely to be based on filter performance data. This
review examines which measures are reported, and the way that filter
performance is presented, in filter comparisons.
Methods: Studies were identified from the current content and pending
update (2010) of a filter website. Eligible studies compared two or more
methodological search filters designed to identify randomised controlled
trials, diagnostic test accuracy studies, systematic reviews or economic
evaluations.
Results: Eighteen studies met the inclusion criteria. The number of
filters compared in a single study ranged from 2 to 38. The most
commonly reported measures were sensitivity/recall and precision. All
studies displayed results in tables and gave results as percentages or
proportions. Two studies supplemented results tables with graphical
displays of data: a bar graph of the proportion of retrieved and missed
gold standard references per filter; a forest plot of the overall
sensitivity and specificity of each filter.
Conclusions: Sensitivity/recall and precision are the most frequently
reported performance measures. This review highlights the potential for
presenting results in novel and innovative ways to aid filter selection.

Abstract:
This present study endeavors to discover the scholarly communication
structure in the CSCL knowledge domain. To explore the intellectual
structure of contemporary literature of CSCL research from 2006 to 2013,
over a thousand research papers indexed in the leading journal
publications and conference proceedings were retrieved from WOS.
Accordingly, this paper adopted a series of methods to analyze these
research articles from macro to micro level, including document
co-citation analysis (DCA), exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and
social network analysis (SNA). As a result, a total of 7,552 and 2,180
co-citation ties were obtained from 403 to 66 source papers,
respectively. In addition, six intellectual subfields within the CSCL
literature were extracted, namely: (1) representation, discourse &
pattern, (2) factors influencing CSCL, (3) intervention and comparison,
(4) critical reasoning, (5) process of social construction, and (6)
design and modeling of CSCL. Central documents and publications within
contemporary CSCL research were identified and presented in the
undirected co-citation networks from both macro and micro perspectives.
Furthermore, the dissemination of underlying subfields and pivotal
documents serving as a boundary-spanning role were discussed. This is
the very first attempt to integrate the bibliographical method,
statistical analysis, and visualization techniques in relation to
contemporary CSCL research. Further discussion and research directions
for future CSCL study are provided.

Authors attain comparable or slightly higher rates of citation publishing in an open access journal (CytoJournal) compared to traditional cytopathology journals - A five year (2007-2011) experience

Abstract:
Background: The era of Open Access (OA) publication, a platform which
serves to better disseminate scientific knowledge, is upon us, as more
OA journals are in existence than ever before. The idea that
peer-reviewed OA publication leads to higher rates of citation has been
put forth and shown to be true in several publications. This is a
significant benefit to authors and is in addition to another relatively
less obvious but highly critical component of the OA charter, i.e.
retention of the copyright by the authors in the public domain. In this
study, we analyzed the citation rates of OA and traditional non-OA
publications specifically for authors in the field of cytopathology.
Design: We compared the citation patterns for authors who had published
in both OA and traditional non-OA peer-reviewed, scientific,
cytopathology journals. Citations in an OA publication (CytoJournal)
were analyzed comparatively with traditional non-OA cytopathology
journals (Acta Cytologica, Cancer Cytopathology, Cytopathology, and
Diagnostic Cytopathology) using the data from web of science citation
analysis site (based on which the impact factors (IF) are calculated).
After comparing citations per publication, as well as a time adjusted
citation quotient (which takes into account the time since publication),
we also analyzed the statistics after excluding the data for meeting
abstracts. Results: Total 28 authors published 314 publications as
articles and meeting abstracts (25 authors after excluding the
abstracts). The rate of citation and time adjusted citation quotient
were higher for OA in the group where abstracts were included (P < 0.05
for both). The rates were also slightly higher for OA than non-OA when
the meeting abstracts were excluded, but the difference was
statistically insignificant (P = 0.57 and P = 0.45). Conclusion : We
observed that for the same author, the publications in the OA journal
attained a higher rate of citation than the publications in the
traditional non-OA journals in the field of cytopathology over a 5 year
period (2007-2011). However, this increase was statistically
insignificant if the meeting abstracts were excluded from the analysis.
Overall, the rates of citation for OA and non-OA were slightly higher to
comparable.

Abstract:
This article discusses potential consequences of implementing
bibliometrics as an institutionalized practice in academic libraries.
Results are reported from a survey among libraries in Sweden with
organized bibliometric activities. Incorporating bibliometric activities
is one way of redefining and widening the role of the library.
Implementation of bibliometric practice is motivated by ambitions to
provide more complete scholarly communication-related services, as well
as to increase the visibility and status of libraries. Underlying
reasons are professional competencies such as metadata and bibliographic
database management; and bibliometrics being strong within library and
information science. Incorporating bibliometrics in academic libraries
is also seen as a way of widening the professional profile of
librarianship. The new role should, however, also be considered from the
viewpoint of potential changes in how academic libraries are perceived
when incorporating a monitoring function through bibliometric analyses
of research performance in addition to traditional service-oriented
functions.

Abstract:
This paper details the development and implementation of CiteGraph, a
system for constructing large-scale citation and co-authorship networks
from full-text biomedical articles. CiteGraph represents articles and
authors by uniquely identified nodes, and connects those nodes through
citation and co-authorship relations. CiteGraph network encompasses over
1.65 million full-text articles and 6.35 million citations by 1.37
million unique authors from the Elsevier full-text articles. Our
evaluation shows 98%similar to 99% F1-score for mapping a citation to
the corresponding article and identifying MEDLINE articles. We further
analyzed the characteristics of CiteGraph and found that they are
consistent with assumptions made using small-scale bibliometric
analysis. We also developed several novel network-based methods for
analyzing publication, citation and collaboration patterns. This is the
first work to develop a completely automated system for the creation of
a large-scale citation network in the biomedical domain, and also to
introduce novel findings in researcher publication histories. CiteGraph
can be a useful resource to both the biomedical community, and
bibliometric research.

Abstract:
The rising star of scholarly publishing is Open Access (OA). Even some
traditional journals now offer this option on author payment, and many
full freely accessible journals are now available to scholars, providing
relief to research institutions increasingly unable to afford the
escalating subscription rates of serials. However, proper recognition of
full OA journals by the community remains a major obstacle to overcome
if they are to become a viable alternative for scholarly communication.
Through a survey, this work investigates economics scholars' attitudes
to OA, and attempts to outline the state of practices and norms
governing individuals' publication choices.

gaining prominence as countries adopt regular research assessment
exercises that especially reward publication in high-impact journals.
Yet even within a rankings-oriented discipline like economics there is
no agreement on how aggressively lower-ranked journals are down-weighted
and in how wide is the universe of journals considered. Moreover, since
it is typically less costly for authors to cite superfluous references,
whether of their own volition or prompted by editors, than it is to
ignore relevant ones, rankings based on citations may be easily
manipulated. In contrast, when the merits of publication in one journal
or another are debated during hiring, promotion, and salary decisions,
the evaluators are choosing over actions with costly consequences. We
therefore look to the academic labor market, using data on economists in
the University of California system to relate their lifetime
publications in 700 different academic journals to salary. We test
amongst various sets of journal rankings, and publication discount
rates, to see which are most congruent with the returns implied by the
academic labor market.

Abstract:
Objectives: We aimed to provide an up-to-date contemporary bibliometric
view of the Received in revised form telemedicine and telehealth
literature and a longitudinal analysis of changes in content 30 June
2014 themes. Accepted 2 July 2014
Methods: Software tools were used to extract and process MEDLINE
entries. Frequencies of papers by year of publication and outlet were
calculated, ranked, charted and tabulated. Keywords: Frequency of
publication by author was also calculated, ranked and tabulated. The
process was repeated for two time periods to examine change: (i)
1970-1995 and (ii) 2009-2013. Telehealth Content analysis of abstracts
was conducted and tag clouds were generated. This visual Bibliometric
analysis representation was used to identify key words and prominent
themes. Content analysis
Results: 17,932 records relating to articles published in 2523 unique
outlets were analyzed. In the cumulative literature, 3152 (18%) articles
were published in specialist telemedicine journals while most articles
(14,780 [82%]) were published in mainstream outlets. This pattern was
observed in both epochs. Clinical journals were not highly represented.
Over time 46,066 unique authors have contributed to the field, with
21,109 of them publishing in the period 2009-2013.
Discussion: Telemedicine is a large and growing field with most
publication occurring outside of the specialist journals. Content
analysis suggested a change of focus from the technical to the clinical
between the two epochs. As a healthcare setting, the home also appears
to be emergent.
Conclusion: This study updates the findings of previous studies. The
emphasis within the literature suggests a move from technical issues to
clinical applications and evaluation. The maturity of the field and its
accessibility to clinicians and policy makers remains unclear. (C) 2014

Abstract:
In this editorial, we assess the cross-disciplinary connections of JIBS
by examining its citation network, which spreads across no less than 36
disciplines or fields. Using a citation network of 166 citing and 645
cited journals, we investigate JIBS' interdisciplinarity using the
intermediation and integration approaches of network analysis. Our
analyses of citation patterns for a 12-year time period (2001-2012)
suggests that JIBS is helping bridge disciplines that do not often
otherwise talk to each other a task of critical importance for new
knowledge creation. We also find that JIBS is enabling integration of
knowledge from a diverse set of disciplines in comparison to other
prominent leading management journals.

Abstract:
Background: Substance use disorders, which include substance abuse and
substance dependence, are present in all regions of the world including
Middle Eastern Arab countries. Bibliometric analysis is an increasingly
used tool for research assessment. The main objective of this study was
to assess research productivity in the field of substance use disorders
in Arab countries using bibliometric indicators.
Methodology: Original or review research articles authored or
co-authored by investigators from Arab countries about substance use
disorders during the period 1900-2013 were retrieved using the ISI Web
of Science database. Research activity was assessed by analyzing the
annual research productivity, contribution of each Arab country, names
of journals, citations, and types of abused substances.
Results: Four hundred and thirteen documents in substance use disorders
were retrieved. Annual research productivity was low but showed a
significant increase in the last few years. In terms of quantity,
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (83 documents) ranked first in research about
substance use disorders while Lebanon (17.4 documents per million)
ranked first in terms of number of documents published per million
inhabitants. Retrieved documents were found in different journal titles
and categories, mostly in Drug and Alcohol Dependence Journal. Authors
from USA appeared in 117 documents published by investigators from Arab
countries. Citation analysis of retrieved documents showed that the
average citation per document was 10.76 and the h - index was 35. The
majority of retrieved documents were about tobacco and smoking (175
documents) field while alcohol consumption and abuse research was the
least with 69 documents.
Conclusion: The results obtained suggest that research in this field was
largely neglected in the past. However, recent research interest was
observed. Research output on tobacco and smoking was relatively high
compared to other substances of abuse like illicit drugs and medicinal
agents. Governmental funding for academics and mental health graduate
programs to do research in the field of substance use disorders is
highly recommended.

Overall, the rates of citation for OA and non-OA were slightly higher to
comparable.

Abstract:
Enlightened by Avramescu's studies, we classified the citation patterns
of high-quality and high-impact publications ito five mathematical
types: lognormal-type, exponential-type, polynomial-type, wave-type and
sleeping-beauty.

Abstract:
As one of the most authoritative journals in the field of quantitative
linguistics, the Journal of Quantitative Linguistics has just passed its
20th birthday. In this paper, we collect information from the 20 volumes
of this journal published so far (1994-2013) to build a corpus, then
extract different categories of information using corpus tools. By
quantitative analysis of the corpus data, complemented with information
extracted from abstract and citation index databases such as Scopus and
Web of Knowledge as important references, we aim to explore the objects,
aims and methodologies of quantitative linguistics, its focuses and
shifts in different periods, representative achievements in the past 20
years, and possible directions for the future. During the process, the
role of JQL both in the development of quantitative linguistics and the
wider scientific community are located and evaluated with
quantitative-based evidence. The findings are that JQL contributes
greatly to the development of quantitative linguistics and is in many
aspects representative of changes in this field, keeping close pace with
trends in the discipline and the ever-evolving characteristics of
quantitative linguistics over the years.

The new role should, however, also be considered from the
viewpoint of potential changes in how academic libraries are perceived
when incorporating a monitoring function through bibliometric analyses
of research performance in addition to traditional service-oriented
functions.

Abstract:
This study retrievals papers on autonomous learning published in 14 key
foreign linguistics journals 1 from 1998 to 2012 in CNKI. By using
bibliometric method, it conducted a statistical analysis of papers on
autonomous learning in three aspects: research contents, research
methods and subjects. The analysis reveals that China has made certain
progress in the filed of autonomous learning research during 15 years.
The number of published papers has been increasing. The research
contents are increasingly comprehensive. Moreover, the research methods
and subjects are gradually diversified. However, there are still some
problems. The research contents are over concentrated with less
innovative perspectives. The subjects are unbalanced and the empirical
research methods need to be strengthened. On this basis, suggestions on
future studies are proposed.
