Abstract:
Traditional citation analysis has been widely applied to detect patterns
of scientific collaboration, map the landscapes of scholarly
disciplines, assess the impact of research outputs, and observe
knowledge transfer across domains. It is, however, limited, as it
assumes all citations are of similar value and weights each equally.
Content-based citation analysis (CCA) addresses a citation's value by
interpreting each one based on its context at both the syntactic and
semantic levels. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of CAA
research in terms of its theoretical foundations, methodical approaches,
and example applications. In addition, we highlight how increased
computational capabilities and publicly available full-text resources
have opened this area of research to vast possibilities, which enable
deeper citation analysis, more accurate citation prediction, and
increased knowledge discovery.

Abstract:
Literature citation analysis plays a very important role in
bibliometrics and scientometrics, such as the Science Citation Index
(SCI) impact factor, h-index. Existing citation analysis methods assume
that all citations in a paper are equally important, and they simply
count the number of citations. Here we argue that the citations in a
paper are not equally important and some citations are more important
than the others. We use a strength value to assess the importance of
each citation and propose to use the regression method with a few useful
features for automatically estimating the strength value of each
citation. Evaluation results on a manually labeled data set in the
computer science field show that the estimated values can achieve good
correlation with human-labeled values. We further apply the estimated
citation strength values for evaluating paper influence and author
influence, and the preliminary evaluation results demonstrate the
usefulness of the citation strength values.

Abstract:
Properties of a percentile-based rating scale needed in bibliometrics
are formulated. Based on these properties, P100 was recently introduced
as a new citation-rank approach (Bornmann, Leydesdorff, & Wang, 2013).
In this paper, we conceptualize P100 and propose an improvement which we
call P100'. Advantages and disadvantages of citation-rank indicators are
noted.

Abstract:
Introduction: Our previous scientometric review of regenerative medicine
provides a snapshot of the fast-growing field up to the end of 2011. The
new review identifies emerging trends and new developments appearing in
the literature of regenerative medicine based on relevant articles and
reviews published between 2000 and the first month of 2014.
Areas covered: Multiple datasets of publications relevant to
regenerative medicine are constructed through topic search and citation
expansion to ensure adequate coverage of the field. Networks of co-cited
references representing the literature of regenerative medicine are
constructed and visualized based on a combined dataset of 71,393
articles published between 2000 and 2014. Structural and temporal
dynamics are identified in terms of most active topical areas and cited
references. New developments are identified in terms of newly emerged
clusters and research areas. Disciplinary-level patterns are visualized
in dual-map overlays.
Expert opinion: While research in induced pluripotent stem cells remains
the most prominent area in the field of regenerative medicine, research
related to clinical and therapeutic applications in regenerative
medicine has experienced a considerable growth. In addition, clinical
and therapeutic developments in regenerative medicine have demonstrated
profound connections with the induced pluripotent stem cell research and
stem cell research in general. A rapid adaptation of graphene-based
nanomaterials in regenerative medicine is evident. Both basic research
represented by stem cell research and application-oriented research
typically found in tissue engineering are now increasingly integrated in
the scientometric landscape of regenerative medicine. Tissue engineering
is an interdisciplinary field in its own right. Advances in multiple
disciplines such as stem cell research and graphene research have
strengthened the connections between tissue engineering and regenerative
medicine.

Abstract:
The acknowledgments in scientific publications are an important feature
in the scholarly communication process. This research analyzes funding
acknowledgment presence in scientific publications and introduces a
novel approach for discovering text patterns by discipline in the
acknowledgment section of papers. First, the presence of acknowledgments
in 38,257 English-language papers published by Spanish researchers in
2010 is studied by subject area on the basis of the funding
acknowledgment information available in the Web of Science database.
Funding acknowledgments are present in two thirds of Spanish articles,
with significant differences by subject area, number of authors, impact
factor of journals, and, in one specific area, basic/applied nature of
research. Second, the existence of specific acknowledgment patterns in
English-language papers of Spanish researchers in 4 selected subject
categories (cardiac and cardiovascular systems, economics, evolutionary
biology, and statistics and probability) is explored through a
combination of text mining and multivariate analyses. Peer interactive
communication predominates in the more theoretical or social-oriented
fields (statistics and probability, economics), whereas the recognition
of technical assistance is more common in experimental research
(evolutionary biology), and the mention of potential conflicts of
interest emerges forcefully in the clinical field (cardiac and
cardiovascular systems). The systematic inclusion of structured data
about acknowledgments in journal articles and bibliographic databases
would have a positive impact on the study of collaboration practices in
science.

Abstract:
In this paper we analyze a collection of bibliographic networks,
constructed from the data from the Web of Science on works (papers,
books, etc.) on the topic of topological indices and on relating
scientific fields. We present the general outlook and more specific
findings about authors, works and journals, subtopics and keywords and
also important relations between them based on scientometric approaches
like the strongest and main citation paths, the main themes on citation
path based on key-words, results of co-authorship analysis in form of
the most prominent islands of citing authors, groups of collaborating
authors, two-mode cores of authors and works. We investigate the nature
of citing of authors, important journals and citing of works between
them, journals preferred by authors and expose hierarchy of similar
collaborating authors, based on keywords they use. We perform temporal
analysis on one important journal as well. We give a comprehensive
scientometric insight into the field of topological indices.

Abstract:
We examine the distributions of Chinese and Indian city sizes for seven
decades (1950s to 2010s) using lognormal, Pareto, and general Pareto
distributions. We ascertain which distribution fits the data and how the
city size distributions change during these periods. The Chinese city
size distribution is represented by lognormal in the early periods
(1950-1990) and by Pareto in 2010, but is not characterized by Zipf,
which could be attributed to Chinese government's restrictions of
migration from rural to urban areas and the one-child policy. In
contrast, the Indian city size distribution transitions from lognormal
in the earlier periods to Zipf in the later periods. (C) 2014 The

Abstract:
The leading role of English as the international language of scientific
communication has been extensively studied. Available data show that
English exerts powerful effects in publication praxis since the use of a
common idiom, or Lingua Franca, serves two main assets: to gain
international visibility, funding and career advancement and to cater
for the worldwide communication of ideas among subjects with different
linguistic backgrounds. Aim of this paper is to discuss contemporary
publication praxis following specific datasets: the growth of scholarly
journals, the publication output in English compared to other national
languages, how this situation affects communication in writing and in
reading for scholarly research.

IMPACT FACTORS

Abstract:
A total of 7,707 agronomy papers (2006 to 2011) by Chinese, Indian, and
Japanese authors were identified in the Web of Science (WoS) database.
The impact factors (IFs) of papers and the uncited paper rate (UPR) in a
particular journal with a given country's authorship was calculated as
IFs calculated in Journal Citation Reports. For India, the impact
factors of articles authored within one country (within-country impact
factor) were significantly lower than the overall IF. The impact factors
of collaborative articles (collaborative impact factor) and
within-country impact factors for the three countries differed
significantly. The uncited rates of collaborative papers (uncited
collaborative paper rate) and uncited rates of papers authored within
one country (uncited within-country paper rate) of China and Japan were
significantly different. However, for India, the uncited collaborative
paper rate was significantly lower than the uncited within-country paper
rate; collaboration (mostly with developed countries) exerted a negative
effect.

Abstract:
The present article intends to contextualize the concept of memory in
the universe of information science, since this conceptual polysemy is
marked by changes that pervade the trenches of society. Thus, we aimed
to point out axiomatically a specific memory concept for Information
Science. Through a theoretical and bibliographical investigation, we
tried to clarify the possibility of an axiom between the lines of
contemporary Information Science. Therefore, the memory in Information
Science can be dissociated from an interconnection with the evocation of
historical memory (space and time), because the memory of Information
Science is revitalized by informational traces via a potentially
produced memory that is mnemonically structured in the contours of
society through the bifurcation with organization, access and use of
information and later in the process of information representation and
retrieval.

Abstract:
The Semantic Web journal by IOS Press follows a unique open and
transparent process during which each submitted manuscript is available
online together with the full history of its successive decision
statuses, assigned editors, solicited and voluntary reviewers, their
full text reviews, and in many cases also the authors' response letters.
Combined with a highly-customized, Drupal-based journal management
system, this provides the journal with semantically rich manuscript time
lines and networked data about authors, reviewers, and editors. These
data are now exposed using a SPARQL endpoint, an extended Bibo ontology,
and a modular Linked Data portal that provides interactive
scientometrics based on established and new analysis methods. The portal
can be customized for other journals as well.

Abstract: Traditional citation analysis has been widely applied to detect patterns of scientific collaboration, map the landscapes of scholarly disciplines, assess the impact of research outputs, and observe knowledge transfer across domains. It is, however, limited, as it assumes all citations are of similar value and weights each equally. Content-based citation analysis (CCA) addresses a citation's value by interpreting each one based on its context at both the syntactic and semantic levels. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of CAA research in terms of its theoretical foundations, methodical approaches, and example applications. In addition, we highlight how increased computational capabilities and publicly available full-text resources have opened this area of research to vast possibilities, which enable deeper citation analysis, more accurate citation prediction, and increased knowledge discovery.

Abstract: Experts have more difficulty identifying reverse salients in R&D because of increasing technological complexity and a shortened technology lifecycle. As an alternative, we suggest a new and systematic method of identifying and forecasting reverse salients using QED (quality function deployment), bibliometric analysis, and TIA (trend impact analysis). QED allows users to systematically identify and prioritize reverse salients. An integration of QFD, bibliometric analysis, and TIA makes it possible to specify key performance indicators of reverse salient in order to identify the performance gap between current and market-required performance and to make a probabilistic forecast about when reverse salients will be corrected. Our method will help managers identify a top priority reverse salient, forecast its future, and thus make better R&D decisions with regard to market requirements. A carbon nanotube biosensor technology is used as an example. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Chemistry is the biggest area of research in which India publishes and it is the second biggest for China in recent years. Within this broad research area, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is India's biggest single academic research contributor, while the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) is China's biggest player. In this communication, we use field-normalized bibliometric indicators from the latest (2013) release of SCImago Institutions Rankings World Reports to show that while the leading institutions from CSIR are showing a declining trend in the quality of research output, their counterparts from CAS are rapidly improving on both quality and quantity terms.

Abstract:
Patent analysis has become important for management as it offers timely
and valuable information to evaluate R&D performance and identify the
prospects of patents. This study explores the scattering patterns of
patent impact based on citations in 3 distinct technological areas, the
liquid crystal, semiconductor, and drug technological areas, to identify
the core patents in each area. The research follows the approach from
Bradford's law, which equally divides total citations into 3 zones.
While the result suggests that the scattering of patent citations
corresponded with features of Bradford's law, the proportion of patents
in the 3 zones did not match the proportion as proposed by the law. As a
result, the study shows that the distributions of citations in all 3
areas were more concentrated than what Bradford's law proposed. The
Groos (1967) droop was also presented by the scattering of patent
citations, and the growth rate of cumulative citation decreased in the
third zone.

Abstract:
It is heuristically valuable to distinguish between citation and other
forms of repetition, such as copying, imitating, or emulating. The
characteristic of citation is simultaneous reference to two or more
incompatible styles in open opposition to the unified styles required
for replication. This requires the insight that all styles are products
of a particular historical moment. Naturalistic styles, then, become
just another kind of period style. This essay examines the theory and
practice of citation during the Song era and argues that such practices
were founded on broader historical theories that identified the engine
of historical change as natural, social, and institutional forces rather
than the actions of great men or gods. Such theories made it possible to
view each historical period as the product of specific historical
changes and so one could view period styles, likewise, as pictorial
tokens of particular moments in the history of art.

Abstract:
Over the years, a trend for very low numbers of scientific publications
from Africa has emerged. There has been no evaluation of pain research
publications from this region. This study was conducted to determine the
African pain research spectrum over the last 10 years, to identify
trends in the number of publications from different countries, to
identify currently underexplored areas of pain research, and to
stimulate renewed interest in quality pain research in Nigeria and
Africa.
The English- and non-English-language medical literature on pain from
July 2002 to May 2012 was studied using Medline, the Ovid database, and
by performing hand searches of relevant references using Google.
Publications on pain by Africans and/or non-Africans conducted in Africa
on Africans living in Africa within the study period were included. The
total number of articles per country, publication types, and impact
factors of the respective journals were tabulated to determine the
quantity and quality of research in this field.
Two hundred twenty-eight (228) articles from 25 African countries that
were published in 129 different journals were identified. The majority
were epidemiological studies (43.9 %), experimental studies (20.2 %),
randomized controlled trials (2.2 %), and systematic reviews (1.8 %).
Nigeria, South Africa, and Uganda topped the list of the most-published
articles, with 76 (33.3 %), 71 (31.1 %), and 12 (5.3 %), respectively.
The total number of journals with impact factors was 81, of which 29
were high-impact-factor journals.
Pain research publications from Africa should be encouraged. Given the
underexplored frontiers of pain research, there is a need to engage in
rigorous research in this field to enhance the contribution of the
African continent ("the African Voice") to worldwide advances in this
respect.
