Abstract: Hydropower fuels the overall societal development by contributing a notable proportion to the whole global power generation. Although much attention has been paid to the development of hydropower, few of them attempted to gather global systematic data and conduct a large-scale review of scientific studies. In such situation, a bibliometric approach is employed in this study to quantitatively evaluate global scientific research on hydropower sustainable development, with a long time span ranging from 1991 to 2012. 434 publications in accordance with the search criteria from Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-Expanded) database are analyzed statistically, and assessments on research development, current trends, and future directions are conducted in regard to eight categories. By synthetically analyzing the keywords, the dominant hotspots of hydropower sustainable research could be concluded as "Turkey", "Eco-", "Small hydro-", and "Fish". Along with a comparable number of publications to the United State, the keyword "Turkey" has exhibited a notable increase since 2000, revealing its predominance in the research on the hydropower sustainable development. Increasing attention has also been directed to the prefixes "Small hydro-" and "Eco-" in recent years. The keywords related to fish are identified from the keyword analyses as well, suggesting that the significance of fish studies has been recognized by researchers. Given the trend during the past several years, these topics are likely to become primary research focuses in the coming period. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Research evaluation, which is an increasingly pressing issue, invariably relies on citation counts. In this contribution we highlight two concerns that the research community needs to pay attention to. One, in the world of search engine facilitated research, factors such as ease of Web discovery, ease of access, and content relevance, rather than quality, influence what gets read and cited. Two, research evaluation based on citation counts works against many types of high-quality works. We also elaborate on the implications of these points by examining a recent nationwide evaluation of researchers performed in Italy. We focus on our discipline (computer science), but we believe that our observations have relevance for a broad audience.

Abstract: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide. The primary aim of this work was to provide an in-depth evaluation of research publications in the field of diets and breast cancer. The impact of economic outcome on national academic productivity was also investigated. Data were retrieved using Pubmed for English-language publications. The search included all research for which articles included words relating to "diets and breast cancer". Population and national income data were obtained from publicly available databases. Impact factors for journals were obtained from Journal Citation Reports (R) (Thomson Scientific). There were 2,396 publications from 60 countries in 384 journals with an impact factor. Among them, 1,652 (68.94%) publications were Original articles. The United States had the highest quantity (51% of total) and highest of mean impact factor (8.852) for publication. Sweden had the highest productivity of publication when adjusted for number of population (6 publications per million population). Publications from the Asian nation increased from 5.3% in 2006 to 14.6% in 2012. The Original article type was also associated with geography (p<0.001; OR=2.183; 95% CI=1.526-3.123), Asian countries produced more proportion of Original articles (82%) than those of rest of the world (67.6%). Diets and breast cancer-associated research output continues to increase annually worldwide including publications from Asian countries. Although the United States produced the most publications, European nations per capita were higher in publication output.

Abstract: A bibliometric analysis based on the Science Citation Index Expanded was conducted to provide insights into the publication performance and research trend of quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) and quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) from 1993 to 2012. The results show that the number of articles per year quadrupled from 1993 to 2006 and plateaued since 2007. Journal of Chemical Information and Modeling was the most prolific journal. The internal methodological innovations in acquiring molecular descriptors and modeling stimulated the articles' increase in the research fields of drug design and synthesis, and chemoinformatics; while the external regulatory demands on model validation and reliability fueled the increase in environmental sciences. "Prediction endpoints", "statistical algorithms", and "molecular descriptors" were identified as three research hotspots. The articles from developed countries were larger in number and more influential in citation, whereas those from developing countries were higher in output growth rates.

Abstract: This paper explores the effects of distance as well as subnational and national borders on international and intranational knowledge spillovers through patent citations across the 39 most patent-cited countries and 319 metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) within the U.S. In contrast to previous findings that knowledge localization fades over time, border and distance effects increase over time for the same-age citations. This increasing effect of borders and distance is associated with strengthened knowledge agglomeration over time. Nevertheless, both border and distance effects decrease with the age of patents. Aggregate border effects are often overestimated due to various aggregation bias. Moreover, business travels and knowledge quality effectively attenuate the effect of subnational borders in knowledge flows. (c) 2014 Elsevier BM. All rights reserved.

Title: Borders and distance in knowledge spillovers: Dying over time or dying with age?-Evidence from patent citations

Launched in October of 2012 on the Web of science research platform, its aims include linking published research articles to their underlying data sets and tracking the citation of the data, as well as encouraging bibliographic citation of data. Cross-disciplinary search capabilities in the Index enable new possibilities for data discovery and synthesis. Data repositories are evaluated with respect to various selection criteria, with particular attention to their relevance to scientific and scholarly research. Index content reflects current data deposition practices. As data citation standards and practices continue to move toward widespread formalization and adoption, the initiative seeks to address issues of data citation, reuse, and author credit in a developing climate.

Abstract: We discuss the concept of recasting the data-rich scientific journal article into two components, a narrative and separate data components, each of which is assigned a persistent digital object identifier. Doing so allows each of these components to exist in an environment optimized for purpose. We make use of a poorly-known feature of the handle system for assigning persistent identifiers that allows an individual data file from a larger file set to be retrieved according to its file name or its MIME type. The data objects allow facile visualization and retrieval for reuse of the data and facilitates other operations such as data mining. Examples from five recently published articles illustrate these concepts.

Title: Research Performance Measurement in Business Administration: The Link between Journal Rankings and Direct Citations Depending on Article and Author Age

Abstract: This paper addresses the relation between research performance measurement based on journal quality assessment on the one hand and direct citations on the ether hand as a function of the age of the article or the respective author. If the connection between both measures of research output becomes stronger with growing age of the article or author, journal quality assessments may serve as an indicator for future citation success in business administration. We look at single papers by German scholars and single German authors and examine the relationship between the number of citations of single papers as well as single authors and the corresponding journal quality assessments. We find that up to medium-term time horizons this relationship becomes closer on both the level of single articles and of single authors. However, for rather old papers and authors this connection is getting weaker again.

Title: Do Managers Use Meeting Analyst Forecasts to Signal Private Information? Evidence from Patent Citations

Abstract: This study examines whether firms manage earnings to meet analyst forecasts to signal superior future performance. Prior research finds that firms use earnings management to just meet analyst forecasts and that these firms have a positive association with future performance (Bartov etal., 2002). There are two potential explanations for the positive association - signaling and attaining benefits that allow for better future performance (i.e., the real benefits explanation). Prior studies cannot provide evidence of signaling because they do not control for the real benefits explanation. Our research design enables us to control for the real benefits explanation because we can identify potential signaling firms within the sample of firms that just meet analyst forecasts. We use a unique database from the National Bureau of Economic Research to construct a proxy for the manager's belief about future firm value due to patents. We find that firms with more patent citations are more likely to just meet the analyst forecast and manage earnings to achieve this goal. We also find firms that just meet analyst forecasts with more patent citations have significantly better performance than firms with fewer patent citations, which is consistent with signaling and not the real benefits explanation.

Abstract: Despite nearly 350years of practice, we still do a fairly poor job of measuring the quality and impact of scholarly papers and the work of individual researchers. Much of our system for determining funding and career advancement revolves around one metric: the impact factor. Technology has progressed to a point where we can do better. We can now track the life of each individual paper after it has been published and better understand how it is read and how it is used. This creates a tremendous opportunity for new alternative metrics ("altmetrics") to give us a much better sense of a paper's true impact. At the same time, we are now faced with an overwhelming quantity of information and seemingly unlimited ways to analyze a researcher's work. How do we separate out the digital needles from the haystack-the signal from the noise-and create useful tools for research assessment?

Abstract: The article explores bibliometric features of the Serbian psychology journal Psihologija in the 2001-2012 period. Several basic indicators of the journal's impact were generated and compared between two periods, before and after 2007 when Psihologija was included in Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI). Journal's output was evaluated in regard to other psychology journals included in SSCI in the same year. The results have shown that Psihologija's impact factor has raised following the increased internationalization of the journal, quantified as the proportion of articles published in English and/or written by foreign authors. However, Psihologija and other South East European (SEE) journals still lack a solid international communication network, which is reflected in the absence of related journals and large proportion of citations from local authors. The article concludes with several suggestions for authors, journal editors, and science policy institutions.

Abstract: Recommending information across domains has recently gained much attention among research and academic communities. Traditionally, a cross-domain recommender system has emerged to assist users in finding relevant information from the target domain given the initial information from the source domain. However, in the area of citation recommendation, mapping terms across different domains could be problematic due to the term mismatch. In this paper, we propose a cross-domain citation recommendation framework to suggest relevant research publications given a patent as the source domain. Two main approaches are implemented and compared in this study. The first is a baseline approach which is based on simple keyword mapping technique. The second approach, Co-Citation Selection (CCS), is based on the collaborative filtering in which neighboring papers is selected and weighted into publication citation prediction. To compare between two approaches, we adopt the Cosine, Jaccard, and KL-Divergence as the similarity measurement. The evaluation results are reported in terms of mean precision, recall, F-measure, and reciprocal rank. The best improvement of 22.6% in mean reciprocal rank was achieved with the Jaccard similarity.

Abstract: Bibliometric analyses were used to identify journals that are representative of the authors' research institutes. Methods to semiautomatically collect data for an institute's publications and which journals they cite are described. Citation analyses of lists of articles and their citations can help librarians to quickly identify the preferred journals in terms of the number of publications, and the most frequently cited journals. Librarians can use these data to generate a list of journals that an institute should subscribe to.

Abstract: Repositories collect a variety of statistics incorporating content coverage and item usage. These statistics are of value to a range of stakeholders, including researchers, institutions, funding bodies and repository managers. Repositories also play a role in the scholarly communication life cycle, as they disseminate and make discoverable scholarly outputs. In recent years, scholarly communication channels have undergone transformation. In addition to traditional channels centred on formal publication, such as journal articles, scholars are making increasing use of a range of social media to discuss, share and promote their ideas and outputs. Additionally, the range of scholarly output has expanded to include other products, such as research data and multimedia. In adapting to the changing research landscape, repositories need to incorporate a wider range of scholarly output. Stakeholders will benefit from a progression into the deployment of newer types of statistics, which reflect the broadening of scholarly communication channels. In this chapter, we provide an overview of repository statistics and efforts to standardise statistics relating to repositories and their software platforms. Altmetrics is discussed, and we explore the debates around purpose, scope and value in this fast-moving and emerging field.

Abstract: Reputation is an important social construct in science, which enables informed quality assessments of both publications and careers of scientists in the absence of complete systemic information. However, the relation between reputation and career growth of an individual remains poorly understood, despite recent proliferation of quantitative research evaluation methods. Here, we develop an original framework for measuring how a publication's citation rate Delta c depends on the reputation of its central author i, in addition to its net citation count c. To estimate the strength of the reputation effect, we perform a longitudinal analysis on the careers of 450 highly cited scientists, using the total citations C-i of each scientist as his/her reputation measure. We find a citation crossover c(x), which distinguishes the strength of the reputation effect. For publications with c < c(x), the author's reputation is found to dominate the annual citation rate. Hence, a new publication may gain a significant early advantage corresponding to roughly a 66% increase in the citation rate for each tenfold increase in C-i. However, the reputation effect becomes negligible for highly cited publications meaning that, for c >= c(x), the citation rate measures scientific impact more transparently. In addition, we have developed a stochastic reputation model, which is found to reproduce numerous statistical observations for real careers, thus providing insight into the microscopic mechanisms underlying cumulative advantage in science.
