Abstract:

ObjectiveThe field of pain-related research has gained more attention as

the prevalence of chronic pain increased over the years. The objective

of this research was to identify highly cited papers, as well as

contributors, to pain-related research.

DesignPain-related articles published from 1900 to 2011 were screened,

and highly cited papers, with at least 100 citations since publication,

were identified and selected for a bibliometric analysis. The total

number of papers, authorship, and collaboration statistics are presented

for countries, institutions, and authors. To assess contributions, a new

indicator, the major contributor index (MCI), was used. Citation trends

for all papers, as well as for top papers, are presented.

ResultsA total of 7,327 articles, 2.4% of all pain-related articles, had

received at least 100 citations since publication. In recent decades,

top-cited articles have reached a citation peak more quickly, and have

shown a more-rapid decreasing trend, compared with top-cited articles

from earlier decades. The leading countries were United States, UK,

Canada, and Germany. The leading institutions were Harvard University,

University of California, San Francisco, University of Texas, and

University of Washington. MCI varied among leading institutions, as well

as among individual authors.

ConclusionsAn indicator like the MCI can provide a proxy for the

contributions made by an individual or institution. It reflects the

independent research ability and leadership. In future evaluations of

institution or individual performances, the MCI should be included,

together with the number of total papers, to provide a better profile of

research performance.

Abstract:

Writing a thesis is mandatory for getting a postgraduate medical degree

in Turkey. Publication of the results of the thesis in an indexed

journal makes the results available to researchers, however publication

rate is usually low. The aim of this retrospective observational study

was to investigate the publication rate of Turkish Infectious Diseases

and Clinical Microbiology, Medical Microbiology specialty theses and

Microbiology doctorate theses in international peer-review journals. On

August 17th 2007, the thesis database of the Council of Higher Education

of the Republic of Turkey (YOK) where all specialization and doctorate

theses are recorded obligatorily, was searched for Infectious Diseases

and Clinical Microbiology and Medical Microbiology specialty and

Microbiology doctorate theses. Assuming that publication of a thesis

would last at least six months, theses dated to February 2007 and after

were excluded. The publication rate of those theses was found out by

searching Science Citation Index-Expanded database for thesis author and

supervisor between August 17-September 12, 2007. Chisquare test was used

for statistical analysis. Our search yielded a total of 834 theses dated

from 1997 to 2007, however 10 of them were excluded, since they were

dated to February 2007 or after. It was found that the overall

publication rate was 11.4% (94/824). The publication rates for

Microbiology doctorate, Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases and

Clinical Microbiology specialty theses were 13.7% (34/249), 10.7%

(33/309) and 10.2% (27/266), respectively, with no statistical

significance (p > 0.05). It was determined that nine (9.6%) of the 94

published theses belonged to 1997-2001 period, whereas 85 (80.4%) were

in 2002-2007 period (p < 0.05). The probable reason for this increase

was thought to be related with the updated criteria of YOK carried out

in 2000 for academic promotions, nevertheless the publication rate of

the investigated theses in international peer-review journals was still

low. Thesis is an important part of specialty and doctorate education

and necessitates intense work. The created knowledge usually contains

important data about the country and the world. Publication of the

theses supplies dissemination of new knowledge and completes the process

of a scientific study. Solutions must be generated to promote the

publication of specialty and doctorate theses.

Abstract:

Objectives Respiratory disease remains one of the leading causes of

morbidity and mortality in China. However, little is known about the

research status of respirology in three major regions of ChinaMainland

(ML), Hong Kong (HK) and Taiwan (TW). A 10-year survey of literature was

conducted to compare the three regions' outputs in the research of

respirology.

Design A bibliometric study.

Setting China.

Participants and outcome measures A literature search in PubMed

database, updated as of September 2012, led to the identification of the

related articles from 2000 to 2009. The number of total articles,

randomised controlled trials, case reports, meta-analysis, impact

factors (IF), citations and articles published in top general medicine

journals was collected for quantity and quality comparisons.

Results 2208 articles were collected, 814 from ML, 909 from TW and 485

from HK. The total number of articles from the three regions has

increased significantly from 2000 to 2009. The number of articles

published per year from ML has exceeded that from HK in 2005 and TW in

2008. The accumulated IF of articles from TW (3192.417) was much higher

than that from ML (2409.956) and HK (1898.312). HK got the highest

average IF of respirology articles and the majority of articles were

published in top general medicine journals.

Conclusions The total number of published articles from the three major

regions of China has increased notably from 2000 to 2009. The annual

number of publications by ML researchers exceeded those from TW and HK.

However, the quality of articles from TW and HK is better than that from

ML.

Abstract:

This is a review of my work published in the papers of Skakala (JHEP

1201:144, 2012; JHEP 1206:094, 2012) and Chirenti et al. (Phys. Rev. D

86:124008, 2012; Phys. Rev. D 87:044034, 2013). It offers a more

detailed discussion of the results than the accounts in those papers,

and it links my results to some conclusions recently reached by other

authors. It also offers some new arguments supporting the conclusions in

the cited articles. The fundamental idea of this work is that the

semiclassical quantization of the black hole entropy, as suggested by

Bekenstein (Phys. Rev. D 7:2333-2346, 1973), holds (at least)

generically for the spacetime horizons. We support this conclusion by

two separate arguments: (1) we generalize Bekenstein's lower bound on

the horizon area transition to a much wider class of horizons than only

the black-hole horizon, and (2) we obtain the same entropy spectra via

the asymptotic quasi-normal frequencies of some particular spherically

symmetric multi-horizon spacetimes (in the way proposed by Maggiore

(Phys. Rev. Lett. 100:141301, 2008)). The main result of this paper

supports the conclusions derived by Kothawalla et al. (Phys. Rev. D

78:104018, 2008) and Kwon and Nam (Class. Quant. Grav. 28:035007, 2011),

on the basis of different arguments.

Abstract:

As pressure to publish increases in the academic nursing world, journal

submission numbers and rejection rates are soaring. The review process

is crucial to journals in publishing high quality, cutting-edge

knowledge development, and to authors in preparing their papers to a

high quality to enable the nursing world to benefit from developments in

knowledge that affect nursing practice and patient outcomes and the

development of the discipline. This paper does not intend to contribute

to the debate regarding the ethics of reviewing, but rather seeks to

explore notions of how the quality of the reviewing process can be

enhanced to benefit authors, the reviewers, and the state of nursing

knowledge. Furthermore, a call is made to editors to devise strategies

for aiding reviewers to attain higher validity and reliability within

the reviewing process by establishing clear standards and expectations

and to ensure published work is judged against industry norms for

quality.

Abstract:

The purpose of this paper is to study the hierarchical structure of the

Canadian urban system and to determine the growth processes. Zipf's law

is rejected for the whole country for all periods because of a clear

size-domination by a few big cities such as Toronto, Montreal and

Vancouver. It appears that the dynamics of growth follow a deterministic

process related to existing urban size, previous growth and spatial

structure. Splitting the Canadian urban system into twoeast and

westpermits the identification of differences that were not observable

when studying the country as a whole. While size and previous growth are

still important explanatory variables of growth patterns, these two

systems may be distinguished one from the other from the point of view

of spatial patterns of distribution of growth rates.

Abstract:

A content analysis was conducted of research published in the Journal of

Black Psychology (JBP) during a 12-year period (2000-2011). A total of

276 articles were classified into 17 content categories. Similar to the

previous JBP content analysis, the most frequently published authors and

institutions were identified and ranked. The most highly cited articles

were also identified. In addition, gender-focused articles and articles

involving racial/ethnic group comparisons were identified. The most

popular areas of research and publication in the JBP were in mental

health and well-being, personality and identity (i.e., racial identity),

culture, and physiological functioning and health psychology. These four

categories accounted for 57% of the articles published. Results of this

content analysis indicate a sharp increase in research on mental health

and culture, while other areas remained consistent with the previous JBP

content analysis. The dearth of African-centered psychological research

was also noted. Implications for the field of Black psychology in the

areas of African-centered research, defining Black psychology, and

conducting race comparative research are discussed.

Abstract:

Purpose This study aimed to analyze gender differences in rank, career

duration, publication productivity, and research funding among radiation

oncologists at U.S. academic institutions.

Method For 82 domestic academic radiation oncology departments, the

authors identified current faculty and recorded their academic rank,

degree, and gender. The authors recorded bibliographic metrics for

physician faculty from a commercially available database (Scopus,

Elsevier BV), including numbers of publications from 1996 to 2012 and

h-indices. The authors then concatenated these data with National

Institutes of Health (NIH) funding per Research Portfolio Online

Reporting Tools. The authors performed descriptive and correlative

analyses, stratifying by gender and rank.

Results Of 1,031 faculty, 293 (28%) women and 738 (72%) men, men had a

higher median m-index, 0.58 (range 0-3.23) versus 0.47 (0-2.5) (P <

.05); h-index, 8 (0-59) versus 5 (0-39) (P < .05); and publication

number, 26 (0-591) versus 13 (0-306) (P < .05). Men were more likely to

be senior faculty and receive NIH funding. After stratifying for rank,

these differences were largely nonsignificant. On multivariate analysis,

there were correlations between gender, career duration and academic

position, and h-index (P < .01).

Conclusions Determinants of a successful career in academic medicine are

multifactorial. Data from radiation oncologists show a systematic gender

association, with fewer women achieving senior faculty rank. However,

women achieving seniority have productivity metrics comparable to those

of male counterparts. This suggests that early career development and

mentorship of female faculty may narrow productivity disparities.

Abstract:

Background: Journal publication is the traditional means of

disseminating research. Few top-ranked general medical and health

services and policy research journals publish qualitative research.

Objectives: This study examined qualitative research publication rates

in top-ranked nursing journals with varying characteristics (general vs.

specialty focus, number of issues per year) and compared publication

rates with those previously reported for journals in related fields.

Methods: A bibliometric approach was used to identify and quantify

qualitative articles published in 10 top-ranked nursing journals from

2002 to 2011.

Results: The percentage of qualitative empirical studies varied within

and across nursing journals with no apparent association with journal

characteristics. Although variable, qualitative research appears more

common in high-ranking nursing journals than in general medical and

health services and policy research journals.

Discussion: Examining factors that contribute to inconsistent rates may

identify strategies to optimize qualitative research reporting and

publication.

Abstract:

The needs of lesbians and gay men appear to be minimally represented in

social work literature. This study applied content analysis to four

major social work journals published between 1998 and 2012, and it

served to update the work of Van Voorhis and Wagner that examined

content in the same four journals between 1988 and 1997. Of the 2,335

articles published in Child Welfare, Families in Society, Social Service

Review, and Social Work during the 15-year period, 55 met the criteria

for inclusion. Results reflect a significant decrease in the quantity of

articles when compared with the previous report, with the largest

decrease noticed in articles that addressed HIV/AIDS. The need to expand

the type and amount of content related to this population continues.

Abstract:

Whether a scientific paper is cited is related not only to the influence

of its author(s) but also to the journal publishing it. Scientists,

either proficient, or less experienced, usually submit their most

important work to prestigious journals which receive more citations than

others. How to model the role of scientific journals in citation

dynamics is of great importance. In this paper we address this issue

through two approaches. One is the intrinsic heterogeneity of a paper

determined by the impact factor of the, journal publishing it. The other

is the mechanism of a paper being cited which depends on its citations

and prestige. We develop a model for citation networks via an intrinsic

nodal weight function and an intuitive aging, mechanism. The node's

weight is drawn front the distribution of impact factors of journals and

the aging transition is a function of the citation and the prestige. The

node-degree distribution of resulting networks shows nonuniversal

scaling: the distribution decays exponentially for small degree and has

a power-law tail for large degree, hence the dual behavior. The higher

the impact factor of the journal, the larger the tipping point and the

smaller the power exponent that are obtained. With the increase of the

journal rank, this phenomenon will fade and evolve to pure power laws.

Abstract:

Several plant species belonging to the genus Aspidosperma are

traditionally used in Brazil and other Meso- and South American

countries for the treatment of malaria and fevers. These traditional

uses were motivation for this review. A literature survey completed for

this review has identified scientific bibliographical references to the

use of 24 Aspidosperma species to treat malaria/fevers and to 19 species

that have had their extracts and/or alkaloids evaluated, with good

results, for in vitro and/or in vivo antimalarial activity. Indole

alkaloids are typical constituents of Aspidosperma species. However,

only 20 out of more than 200 known indole alkaloids isolated from this

genus have been assayed for antimalarial activity. These data support

the potential of Aspidosperma species as sources of antimalarials and

the importance of research aimed at validating their use in the

treatment of human malaria.

Abstract:

This essay challenges what Sarah Cardwell calls the 'centre-based model

of adaptation' by reinstating a chain of literary texts between a

passage in Emma Tennant's The Ballad of Sylvia and Ted (2001) and the

entry in Sylvia Plath's journals that is Tennant's ostensible source. By

demonstrating that the intervening works are intertextual and adaptive

and that the journals themselves adapt lived experience, the essay

contributes to the troubling of "originality" as an appropriate critical

standard. It concludes that the act of adaptation enhances the aura

surrounding the extratextual event by appending a mythological status,

renewed with each successive adaptation.

Abstract:

The scaling exponent of a hierarchy of cities used to be regarded as a

fractional dimension. The Pareto exponent was treated as the fractal

dimension of size distribution of cities, while the Zipf exponent was

considered to be the reciprocal of the fractal dimension. However, this

viewpoint is not exact. In this paper, I will present a new

interpretation of the scaling exponent of rank-size distributions. The

ideas from fractal measure relation and the principle of dimension

consistency are employed to explore the essence of Pareto's and Zipf's

scaling exponents. The Pareto exponent proved to be a ratio of the

fractal dimension of a network of cities to the average dimension of

city population. Accordingly, the Zipf exponent is the reciprocal of

this dimension ratio. On a digital map, the Pareto exponent can be

defined by the scaling relation between a map scale and the

corresponding number of cities based on this scale. The cities of the

United States of America in 1900, 1940, 1960, and 1980 and Indian cities

in 1981, 1991, and 2001 are utilized to illustrate the geographical

spatial meaning of Pareto's exponent. The results suggest that the

Pareto exponent of city-size distributions is a dimension ratio rather

than a fractal dimension itself. This conclusion is revealing for

scientists to understand Zipf's law on the rank-size pattern and the

fractal structure of hierarchies of cities.

Abstract:

Scientists who do not speak English as their mother tongue report

difficulties in bringing their manuscripts to successful publication in

English-language journals. Writing is found to be 21 % more difficult,

on average, than writing a scientific paper in their native language.

Barriers include sentence-level elements of vocabulary and syntax;

however, issues of manuscript organization, methodological criticisms,

and devaluation of non-English bibliographic references are also

reported. The increased variation in the English that is publishable

indicates that the language is growing as a lingua franca.

Abstract:

Dr. David Mark is widely regarded as a path-breaking researcher in

geographic information science. What are the structural and temporal

characteristics of his intellectual contributions, as seen through the

eyes of the broader academic community? Aiming to answer that question,

this article presents a scientometric analysis of publications that have

been cited alongside David Mark's papers. In deliberate contrast to the

widespread focus on using citation data to condense scientific impact

into a handful of indicators, the methodological contribution of this

study lies in its mix of computational and visualization approaches. In

the search for latent domain structures, state-of-the-art practices in

information science, bibliometrics, and network visualization are

combined and extended. An initial network of 50,000+ publications and

4,000,000+ document co-citations undergoes a series of transformations

reducing it to 9000 publications that are then clustered in a two-stage

process, leading to 678 communities whose co-citation linkages are used

to delineate 19 super-communities. To enable replication of this

approach for other studies, much focus in this article is on detailed

discussion of that workflow as well as on highlighting the reasoning

behind the choices made among data sources and analytical methods. The

topical evolution of David Mark's domain of influence is explored in

some detail, based on tabular and graphic representations of extracted

community structures. Results confirm not only the enormous overall

breadth of his influence but also how lasting and recurrent it has been

in some areas.

ML.

Abstract:

The rise of metrics that measure scientific production and impact is

increasingly important. The system of determining 'impact' of a journal

was created 50 years ago and the now ubiquitous 'impact factor'

dominates much scientific publishing. The impact factor is used for

judging journal importance although criticisms of this metric abound.

Indices that count the number of scientific articles produced around the

world indicate that the U. S. is no longer in first position, outplaced

by Europe, and China has growing visibility in science article

production.

Abstract:

David M. Mark published his first journal article in 1970. Since then,

he has written or coauthored more than 220 publications over a period of

40 years as of 28 May 2012. Based on data from Web of Science (WoS) and

Google Scholar, Mark's publications have been cited over 7410 times by

researchers in more than 80 countries or regions as of 28 May 2012, when

this paper was first prepared. The geographic extent of Mark's scholarly

influence is truly global. An examination of his 20 most cited articles

reveals that his work in diverse areas as digital elevation models,

geomorphology, geographic cognition, and ontology of the geospatial

domain enjoyed a lasting impact worldwide.

Abstract:

This paper describes PSALM, a recently developed software tool for

business intelligence and its functionality through several case

studies. Patent Search and Analysis for Landscaping and Management

(PSALM) tool assembles patent data from publicly available data bases,

collects and analyses bibliographic parameters of patents but also does

text mining. High-dimensional data contained in the patent documents are

transformed into much lower dimensionality space (2D or 3D), clustered

and visualized. The PSALM functionality and usability is demonstrated

through three case studies of analyzing, comparing and evaluating

strengths and weaknesses of different patent portfolios. (C) 2014 The

Abstract:

The aim of the paper is to analyze with data the consolidation of corpus

methods in translation and to specify which issues are under research

and the features that characterize these studies. To that end, different

contributions to corpus linguistics research, teaching and practice of

translation were compiled to build a sufficiently representative sample:

389 bibliographic records on corpus linguistics applied to translation.

This study deals with the identification and analysis of different data

from the records: lines of research, applied and theoretical, language

pairs, and in sum, if Corpus Linguistics is a well-established

methodology in research in translation and in which way. (C) 2013 The

Abstract:

This article is an update of that one which was published 10 years ago

called "PMR-relevant Journals. A list of journals for Physical Medicine

and Rehabilitation and other related fields" (Piek et al. 2004). This is

important for illustrating the actual state.

This piece of paper aims to provide the reader with a comprehensive

overview concerning relevant journals due to the field of Physical

-Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) as well as related medical sections.

German- but also English-language journals are included and acquired

with the corresponding *Impact Factor* of 2012, publisher, editor and

website.

Representative for PMR is the correlation with further medical fields

like e. g., orthopaedics, neurology or rheumatology. Consequently the

list is extended by these journals, in which -meaningful articles

respecting PMR are published. The revised list of 124, formerly 132,

titles will be allocated on the DGPMR Website (www.dgpmr.de).

One is the intrinsic heterogeneity of a paper

determined by the *impact factor* of the, journal publishing it. The

other is the mechanism of a paper being cited which depends on its

citations and prestige. We develop a model for citation networks via an

intrinsic nodal weight function and an intuitive aging, mechanism. The

node's weight is drawn front the distribution of impact factors of

journals and the aging transition is a function of the citation and the

prestige. The node-degree distribution of resulting networks shows

nonuniversal scaling: the distribution decays exponentially for small

degree and has a power-law tail for large degree, hence the dual

behavior. The higher the *impact factor* of the journal, the larger the

tipping point and the smaller the power exponent that are obtained. With

the increase of the journal rank, this phenomenon will fade and evolve

to pure power laws.

Abstract:

The rise of metrics that measure scientific production and impact is

increasingly important. The system of determining 'impact' of a journal

was created 50 years ago and the now ubiquitous '*impact factor*'

dominates much scientific publishing. The *impact factor* is used for

judging journal importance although criticisms of this metric abound.

Indices that count the number of scientific articles produced around the

world indicate that the U. S. is no longer in first position, outplaced

by Europe, and China has growing visibility in science article

production.

Title: A Bibliometric Analysis on Top-Cited Articles in Pain Research

Abstract: ObjectiveThe field of pain-related research has gained more attention as the prevalence of chronic pain increased over the years. The objective of this research was to identify highly cited papers, as well as contributors, to pain-related research. DesignPain-related articles published from 1900 to 2011 were screened, and highly cited papers, with at least 100 citations since publication, were identified and selected for a bibliometric analysis. The total number of papers, authorship, and collaboration statistics are presented for countries, institutions, and authors. To assess contributions, a new indicator, the major contributor index (MCI), was used. Citation trends for all papers, as well as for top papers, are presented. ResultsA total of 7,327 articles, 2.4% of all pain-related articles, had received at least 100 citations since publication. In recent decades, top-cited articles have reached a citation peak more quickly, and have shown a more-rapid decreasing trend, compared with top-cited articles from earlier decades. The leading countries were United States, UK, Canada, and Germany. The leading institutions were Harvard University, University of California, San Francisco, University of Texas, and University of Washington. MCI varied among leading institutions, as well as among individual authors. ConclusionsAn indicator like the MCI can provide a proxy for the contributions made by an individual or institution. It reflects the independent research ability and leadership. In future evaluations of institution or individual performances, the MCI should be included, together with the number of total papers, to provide a better profile of research performance.
