Abstract:
Commonly, bibliometric analysis at the national level measures the
scientific performance through the complete production of articles and
citations and through productivity related to the number of inhabitants.
In our study we also report on efficiency as the scientific output
obtained related to the available financing. The results indicate that
only two African countries (South Africa and Tunisia) have covered a
learning process and become mature entities in the R&D process, the
productivity being doubled by efficiency.

Abstract:
The present study reports on the research performance of the Botanical
Survey of India (BSI) between 1971 and 2010, based on number of
parameters, including publications, citations, impact in terms of
average citation per paper, international and national collaboration
output, share of publication by different circles of BSI, type of
communication, most preferred journals, highly cited papers, authorship
pattern and most productive authors. The study analyses 40 years
(1971-2010) of publication data drawn from Web of Science
(SCI-Expanded). A total of 423 papers were published in 40 years (10.57
papers per year), which received 892 citations with an average of 2.1
citations per paper, h-index of 12 and a p-index of 12.34. It has been
observed that during 1977-1986, number of publications was comparatively
better. Between 1987 and 2005, a long recession was observed; again it
is on rise from 2006 onwards, the citations were following almost the
same trend. BSI has published 72 and 38 collaborative papers with
involvement of 56 national and 22 foreign institutions respectively.
Current Science is the most preferred journal, Council of Scientific and
Industrial Research is major domestic collaborator (21 papers),
University of Rhode Island, Kingston is the major foreign collaborator
(11 papers), USA is the major collaborator country (16 papers) and BSI,
Kolkata has contributed maximum number of publications (41%).

Abstract:
Bibliometric rankings are quite common in the field of software
engineering. For example, there are a series of ranking repeated every
year which identify the top researchers and institutions at the
international level in the field. There are also other studies to
determine the most cited articles in software engineering journals, the
most popular research topics in this area, or identify the top
researchers and institutions in regional levels. However, there exists
no existing bibliometric quantitative analysis of publications in the
area of software engineering (SE), including relative and absolute
growth in the number of all SE publications as well as an analysis among
countries. This is the main goal and motivation of this article.
Besides, this study intends to provide an overall quantitative trend of
the software engineering papers, and compare that trend to research
output in other areas of science.
The bibliometric study reported in this paper is motivated by the fact
that understanding the amount of geographical research contributions to
the field of software engineering can help identify different countries'
level of commitment to support research activities in this area over
years. We analyze how the contribution levels of top-ranked countries
have changed over the years and how SE compares to other disciplines of
engineering and science. Among the most interesting findings of this
study are: (1) Over 40 years, in total about 60% of the SE literature
has been contributed by only 7% of all countries, (2) the SE research
output of different countries does not necessarily correlate with their
GDPs, (3) the share of contributions to the SE discipline by the
American researchers has declined from 71.43% ( in 1980) to 14.90% ( in
2008), and ( 4) China is the country with the biggest share growth in
the number of publications ( from 0.82% of the entire SE publications in
1991 to 13.82% in 2009).

Abstract:
Fuzzy similarity relations form the basis for many developments and
applications of fuzzy systems. Measures of fuzzy similarity have been
proposed in the literature for comparing objects. In this paper,
aggregated fuzzy relations are generated between academic journals to
compare their performance with respect to different journal impact
indicators. In particular, various indicators may be employed to
construct several distinctive fuzzy similarity relations, which may be
subsequently combined via the use of the Ordered Weighted Average (OWA)
operator. This proposed aggregated measure preserves reflexivity and
symmetry, with T - transitivity conditionally preserved if appropriate
weighting vectors are selected. Different similarity measures and
weighting vectors are compared for the task of journal clustering, in an
effort to estimate the ranking of academic journals. The results of
experimental evaluation demonstrate that by using OWA- aggregated
relations, simple techniques such as C - means can perform well in terms
of standard accuracy and within- 1 accuracy. The proposed method also
exhibits the advantages of being more intuitive and interpretable.

The "*impact factor* style of thinking": A new theoretical framework

Abstract:
Over the last few years, university policy in developed countries has
placed too much emphasis on assessing publications on the basis of the
*impact factor*. Any scientific material that has not been published in
a journal indexed in the Journal Citation Reports is academically
irrelevant. Hence, researchers strive hard to publish in such journals.
Failure to achieve this means not having a successful career or
receiving any academic recognition. A thorough analysis of the effects
of this phenomenon on the researcher community leads to the conclusion
that the overestimation of the *impact factor* is likely to cause
disappointment among many researchers. Researchers only have two
options: adopting a politically correct behavior, that is, following the
"*impact factor* style of thinking", or accepting the futility of their
research regardless of its relevance. This is an example of the
involvement of university policy habitus obsessed impact index. O policy
impact index is accepted, or is doomed to academic ostracism, and
exclusion from participation in all university policy. (C) 2014

Abstract:
We carry out a citation-based bibliometric profiling of the journal
Current Science. A three-dimensional approach breaks down scholarly
performance into three primary components quantity, quality and
consistency. The citation data are retrieved from the Web of Science. We
quantify the evolution of these primary indicators with time, and along
with two additional secondary indicators, the h-index and the z-index,
identify the most productive authors, cities and states that have
published articles and notes in Current Science in the recent past.

Abstract:
This article is an update of that one which was published 10 years ago
called "PMR-relevant Journals. A list of journals for Physical Medicine
and Rehabilitation and other related fields" (Piek et al. 2004). This is
important for illustrating the actual state.
This piece of paper aims to provide the reader with a comprehensive
overview concerning relevant journals due to the field of Physical
-Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) as well as related medical sections.
German- but also English-language journals are included and acquired
with the corresponding *Impact Factor* of 2012, publisher, editor and
website.
Representative for PMR is the correlation with further medical fields
like e. g., orthopaedics, neurology or rheumatology. Consequently the
list is extended by these journals, in which -meaningful articles
respecting PMR are published. The revised list of 124, formerly 132,
titles will be allocated on the DGPMR Website (www.dgpmr.de).

Abstract:
Objectives: To evaluate the quantity and quality of published vascular
surgery research articles from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)
countries so as to identify areas for improvement.
Design: Descriptive study.
Materials: Published MEDLINE articles on vascular surgery from the GCC
countries (1960-2010).
Methods: Critical analysis of the articles.
Results: A total of 146 articles were studied, majority of which were
case series/case reports (55.5%); 33% of the articles were prospective.
The first author was from a university in 67.1% of the articles. Only
one randomized controlled trial was found. The median (range) *impact
factor* of the journals was 1.16 (0.16-12.64). Kuwait had the highest
number of publications/country, standardized/100,000 inhabitants. There
were 11 experimental studies, which were all from Kuwait. More
statistically significant, experimental vascular surgery papers were
published prior to 1993 (11/30 compared with 0/111 afterward, p <
0.0001; Fisher exact test). The GCC countries had the lowest vascular
surgery research output compared with Turkey, Hong Kong, Singapore, and
Japan when standardized by the population. The h index of the GCC
countries' vascular research publications was the lowest (19) compared
with the other four countries (29-97). Furthermore, the average citation
of the GCC countries (5.81) was similar to Turkey (5.66), but less than
Hong Kong (17.38), Singapore (12.79), and Japan (11.75).
Conclusion: The quality and quantity of vascular surgery research in the
GCC countries should be improved to answer important local questions
related to vascular diseases. This needs better strategic planning and
more collaboration between various institutions. Copyright (C) 2013,

Abstract:
Background: The report of the fifth national tuberculosis ( TB)
epidemiological survey in P. R. China, 2010, roughly showed that
pulmonary TB (PTB) prevalence was higher in western China than in
central and eastern China. However, accurately estimating the continuous
spatial variations of PTB prevalence and clearly understanding factors
impacting on spatial variations of PTB prevalence are important for
allocating limited resources of national TB programme (NTP) in P. R.
China.
Methods: Using ArcGIS Geostatistical Wizard (ESRI, Redlands, CA), an
evaluation was performed to decide that which kriging and cokriging
methods along with different combinations of types of detrending,
semivariogram models, anisotropy and covariables (socio-economic and
geographic factors) can accurately construct spatial distribution
surface of PTB prevalence using statistic data sampled from the fifth
national TB epidemiological survey in P. R. China, 2010, and then the
evaluation results were used to explore factors of spatial variations.
Results: The global cokriging with socio-economic and geographic factors
as covariables proved to be the best geostatistical methods for
accurately estimating spatial distribution surface of PTB prevalence.
The final continuous surfaces of PTB prevalence distribution
demonstrated that PTB prevalence were lower in Beijing, Tianjin,
Shanghai and southeastern coast China, higher in western and
southwestern China, and crossed between low and high in central China.
Conclusions: The predicted continuous surface perspicuously illustrated
the spatial variations of PTB prevalence that were co-impacted by
socio-economic and geographic factors, which can be used to better
allocate the always limited resources of NTP in P. R. China.

Abstract:
The frequent appearance of empirical rank-frequency laws, such as
*Zipf*'s law, in a wide range of domains reinforces the importance of
understanding and modeling these laws and rank-frequency distributions
in general. In this spirit, we utilize a simple stochastic cascade
process to simulate several empirical rank-frequency distributions
longitudinally. We focus especially on limiting the process's complexity
to increase accessibility for non-experts in mathematics. The process
provides a good fit for many empirical distributions because the
stochastic multiplicative nature of the process leads to an often
observed concave rank-frequency distribution (on a log-log scale) and
the finiteness of the cascade replicates realworld finite size effects.
Furthermore, we show that repeated trials of the process can roughly
simulate the longitudinal variation of empirical ranks. However, we find
that the empirical variation is often less that the average simulated
process variation, likely due to longitudinal dependencies in the
empirical datasets. Finally, we discuss the process limitations and
practical applications.

Abstract:
Bibliometric indexes are customary used in evaluating the impact of
scientific research, even though it is very well known that in different
research areas they may range in very different intervals. Sometimes,
this is evident even within a single given field of investigation making
very difficult (and inaccurate) the assessment of scientific papers. On
the other hand, the problem can be recast in the same framework which
has allowed to efficiently cope with the ordering of web-pages, i.e., to
formulate the PageRank of Google. For this reason, we call such a
problem the PaperRank problem, here solved by using a similar approach
to that employed by PageRank. The obtained solution, which is
mathematically grounded, will be used to compare the usual heuristics of
the number of citations with a new one here proposed. Some numerical
tests show that the new heuristics is much more reliable than the
currently used ones, based on the bare number of citations. Moreover, we
show that our model improves on recently proposed ones (Bini (2010)). We
also show that, once the PaperRank problem is correctly solved, one
obtains, as a by-product, the ranking of both authors and journals. (C)

Abstract:
We introduce a new class of measures of scholarly influence, which we
term step-based indices. This class includes the prominent h-index, the
publication count, and the i10-index. We show that the class of
step-based indices is characterized by two axioms, consistency with
worse scientists and consistency with better scientists. We also
introduce a new index, the junior/senior-index, which is a step-based
index that combines the best features of the h-index with those of the
i10-index. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
The measurement of the quality of academic research is a rather
controversial issue. Recently Hirsch has proposed a measure that has the
advantage of summarizing in a single summary statistics the information
that is contained in the citation counts of each scientist. From that
seminal paper, a huge amount of research has been lavished, focusing on
one hand on the development of correction factors to the h index and on
the other hand, on the pros and cons of such measure proposing several
possible alternatives. Although the h index has received a great deal of
interest since its very beginning, only few papers have analyzed its
statistical properties and implications. In the present work we propose
a statistical approach to derive the distribution of the h index. To
achieve this objective we work directly on the two basic components of
the h index: the number of produced papers and the related citation
counts vector, by introducing convolution models. Our proposal is
applied to a database of homogeneous scientists made up of 131 full
professors of statistics employed in Italian universities. The results
show that while "sufficient" authors are reasonably well detected by a
crude bibliometric approach, outstanding ones are underestimated,
motivating the development of a statistical based h index. Our proposal
offers such development and in particular confidence intervals to
compare authors as well as quality control thresholds that can be used
as target values.

Abstract:
A bibliometric research based on the Science Citation Index Expanded was
carried out to provide insights into research activities on
bioinformatics in China. Annual publication output has been on
continuous increase both worldwide and for China from 1998 to 2012. In
recent years, China showed faster growth rates than world average. As
the second productive country in the field of bioinformatics, China did
not do equally well in terms of citation counts and h-index. Chinese
Academy of Sciences and Shanghai Jiao Tong University were among the ten
most productive institutes in the world, and their basic metrics and
collaboration patterns were compared with other institutes, especially
two institutes from Japan. The journal PLoS One was found to have
published the most papers from China. In addition, this paper compared
the most active categories in Web of Science worldwide with those of
China. Personal perspectives of bioinformatics research in China were
also presented.

Abstract:
The family of indicators presented in this paper includes indices
created by taking into account not only the direct but also the indirect
impact of citations and references. Three types of citation graphs are
presented, namely, the Paper-Citation graph, the Author-Citation graph
and the Journal-Citation graph, along with different methods for
constructing them. In addition, the concept of generations of citations
is examined in detail, again by presenting various methods for defining
them found in the literature. Finally, a number of indirect indicators
for papers, authors and journals are discussed, which among others,
include PageRank, CiteRank, indirect h-index and the EigenFactor score.

The meaning of the h-index

Abstract:
The h-index originates from the assumption that the number of citations
received by a scientist is a better indicator of the relevance of his or
her work than the number of papers he or she publishes or the journals
where they are published. It takes into account the number of papers
published and the citations to those papers in a balanced way, and thus
is useful to make comparisons between scientists. The present paper
addresses the most frequent questions about the h-index. Specifically,
it explains its origin, its advantages compared to other indices, the
factors that can influence it (e.g. age, field of knowledge, topic of
research and language of publication), its variants, and the injustices
it may lead to. In short, this paper provides a clear exposition of the
hoped-for role of the h-index in the evaluation of scientists: that it
serves as a useful complement to other indicators that are more
subjective, and that it contributes to the progress of science by aiding
decision-making on allocation of research resources in a more effective
way, and on rewarding researchers who contribute to scientific progress
in a more fair way. (C) 2014 Asociacion Espanola de Psicologia

Abstract:
Several publication metrics are used for the evaluation of academic
productivity. h index and g index are relatively new statistics for this
purpose. Our aim is to evaluate academic psychiatrists' h and g indices
at different academic ranks in the United States. 30 psychiatry programs
from the American Medical Association's FREIDA online database were
included to the study. From each academic rank, the total number of
papers (P (total)), the single authored papers (P (single)) and the h
and g indexes of faculty members were calculated by using one way ANOVA
for multiple comparisons as primary analysis test. The metric medians as
follows; P (total) = 34.5, P (single) = 13, g index = 19.5 and h index =
9. h index significantly differed between academic ranks except
chairperson-professor. The other indices failed to distinguish junior
academic ranks (associated professor-assistant professor) in addition to
chairperson-professor. The strongest correlation was between h index and
g indexes. Of the indices evaluated, the h-index is best tracked with
academic ranking in psychiatry programs studied.

The median (range) impact
factor of the journals was 1.16 (0.16-12.64).

Abstract:
In this literature search assignment, the concept of six degrees of
separation is used to highlight the interconnectivity of research
papers. This assignment challenges students to link two papers together
only through references. Through this assignment, students get hands-on
experience with various library and online literature searching tools,
specifically Web of Science's cited reference search. The assignment
also develops students' ability to comprehend the evolution and
communication of scientific information, as well as teaching them how to
think critically about information in order to evaluate it, draw
conclusions, and follow a logical path of inquiry. Finally, students can
be introduced to how citation information is often used (and misused) to
evaluate journals, papers, and researchers. [Abstract graphic image is

Abstract:
This article studies the role of extremely highly cited articles in two
instances: the measurement of citation inequality and mean citation
rates. Using a data set, acquired from Thomson Scientific, consisting of
4.4 million articles published in 1998-2003 in 22 broad fields with a
5-year citation window, the main results are the following. First, both
within each of 22 broad fields and in the all-sciences case, citation
inequality is strongly affected by the presence of a handful of extreme
observations, particularly when it is measured by citation inequality
indices that are very sensitive to citation differences in the upper
tail of citation distributions. Second, the impact of extreme
observations on citation averages is generally much smaller. The
concluding section includes some practical lessons for students of
citation inequality and/or users of high-impact indicators.

Abstract:
This study analyzes the evolution of the research field of industrial
symbiosis (IS). We elucidate its embedding in industrial ecology (IE),
trace the development of research themes, and reveal the evolution of
the research network through analysis of the core literature and
journals that appeared from 1997 to 2012 by citation analysis,
cocitation analysis, and network analysis.
In the first period (1997-2005), IS research held a minority share in
the IE literature. The research revolved around the concept of IS, the
assessment of eco-industrial park projects, and the establishment of
waste treatment and recycling networks. In the second period
(2006-2012), diverse research approaches and theories enriched the
field, which has led to a maturation in theory building. Our findings
clearly illustrate that IS evolved from practice-oriented research
toward coherent theory building through a systematic underpinning and
linking of diverse topics. As scientific attention shifted from
exploring a phenomenon to elucidating underlying mechanisms, IS
knowledge found worldwide practical implementation. The coauthorship
network shows that the academic communities of IS are distributed
worldwide and that international collaboration is widespread.
Through bibliometric and network analysis of IS, we have created a
systemic, quantitative image of the evolution of the IS research field
and community, which gives IS researchers an underpinned overview of the
IS research and may help them to identify new directions and synergy in
worldwide research.

Abstract:
This paper presents a unique approach to translating a complex citation
network into simple main paths. We apply this approach to explore the
knowledge diffusion paths of corporate social responsibility (CSR)
literature over the past 40 years. ISI Web of Science (WOS) is used as
the data source for retrieving the CSR papers and their citation data.
We then apply main path analysis to identify and visualize the local,
global, and key-route main paths. The local and global main paths
identify those papers that play a key role in the knowledge diffusion of
CSR. The key-route main path clearly exhibits the divergence-convergence
pattern of CSR development. Although the divergence-convergence pattern
of a theory's development has been hinted at in previous literature, we
propose the key-route main path to systematically identify and exhibit
it. This approach provides a useful method for researchers to figure out
the development cycles of a target field. Copyright (c) 2013 John Wiley

Abstract:
Research problem: This study explores the use of bibliometric indicators
to objectively evaluate IEEE scientific journals from two different
perspectives: (1) journal impact and diffusion and (2) the academic
reputation of journal authors. Research questions: (1) Which journals
are better at selecting articles with high scientific impact (measured
by average citations per article), and publishing authors with strong
reputations (measured by h-indices)? (2) Does the impact of journal
articles correlate positively with the reputations of their authors? and
(3) Can bibliometric indicators provide a simple way for journal editors
to monitor journal performance in a manner complementary to traditional
ISI impact factor (IF)? Literature review: This paper reviews literature
on citation analysis, a bibliometric method of measuring impact based on
the number of times a work is cited, and explains such bibliometric
indicators as, Hirsch index, and IF which measure the impact of a
journal, and introduces a new indicator called h-spectrum to objectively
measure the reputation of a journal's author group. Methodology: This
quantitative study performed citation analysis on 250,000 authors in 110
IEEE journals using citation statistics from the Google Scholar, Web of
Science, and Scopus databases to construct the h-spectrum indicator. The
authors used automated filtering techniques to exclude questionable
author data. Results and conclusions: The first phase of analysis
indicated significant differences among IEEE publications in journal
impact, and found that the h-index and were suitable for evaluating
journals except in their most recent five years where annual rankings
are proposed instead. The second phase of analysis found that h-spectra
distributions of author reputation differ among journals in a single
year, and are generally stable for a single journal over five years.
Maps were constructed to locate journals graphically based on the
complementary indicators of impact and reputation, and to show changes
in impact and reputation over time. The maps indicated that journals
with high impact tend to have authors with high reputations but the
opposite is not necessarily true. Suggestions were made to explain
different combinations of high and low impact and reputation for
journals. The use of maps complements IF and provides a simple tool to
monitor journal reputation at the time of most recent publication. The
study is limited by assumptions about the value of citations, the
reliability of search engine statistics, and the homogeneity of IEEE
journal citation practices, as well as the failure to account for
coauthors, article age, and authors who publish multiple times per year
in the same journal. Future research could examine non-IEEE journals and
normalize subfields within IEEE journals to avoid favoring fields that
use more citations.

Abstract:
In the United States, geographic information system (GIS) has been
widely used and researched in thousands of organizations, including
academic institutions, government agencies, and businesses. Few efforts
have evaluated how much impact an organization has on the research
community. To fill this gap, I established collaboration and citation
networks among 2394 US organizations and calculated their impact scores
based on quantity, diversity, and spread of scholarly activities. I
reported top-ranking organizations between 1992 and 2011 and identified
spatio-temporal patterns of GIS growth over the United States. The
results are valuable for organizations to assess their strengths and
weakness and find a path to broaden the impact.

Abstract:
The organization of large collections of documents has become more
important with the increase in the amount of digital information
available. In certain constricted domains of knowledge, keywords and
subject descriptors tend to be similar and therefore insufficient to
differentiate documents. In this context, instead of relying only on the
presence of common terms, the identification of common cited references
can be useful to define semantic relationship among documents. The
purpose of this work is to add another instance on the research linking
information retrieval and bibliometric techniques aided by information
technology. A domain analytic method was developed to generate clusters
of documents, which uses self-organizing maps, in the scope of
artificial neural networks, to categorize documents. The results
obtained show that this approach successfully identified clusters of
authors and documents through their cited references. In addition,
further qualitative analysis of these clusters demonstrates the
existence of semantic relationships between the documents. This study
can contribute to the development of the field of knowledge organization
by evaluating the use of artificial neural networks in the automatic
categorization of documents in a constricted knowledge domain based on
the analysis of the references cited by these documents.

A note on the interpolated or real-valued h-index with a generalization for fractional counting

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to extend the h-index framework to
the case that articles are counted fractionally.
Design/methodology/approach Three restrictions related to the standard
h-index are explained: as the standard h-index is a natural number it is
a rather coarse indicator; if a scientist has published a relatively
small number of publications then the h-index is completely determined
by the number of publications; the standard h-index cannot be applied if
publications are counted fractionally, or when magnitude values smaller
than one occur.
Findings We recall solutions we proposed in earlier publications
regarding the first two problems (the use of the interpolated h-index
and of the pseudo h-index) and add a new proposal to solve the third
problem. The relation between the recently introduced
window/field-normalized h-type index (hwf-index) and the interpolated
h-index is described. A real-world example proves the feasibility of
this proposal.
Research limitations/implications Colleagues have shown that the h-index
and its variations have fatal flaws and hence should never be used. Yet,
not everyone agrees with this opinion.
Originality/value Assuming that the h-index still has some value, this
paper introduces a refinement of the interpolated h-index, called the
generalized interpolated h-index. In this way the h-index framework is
extended to incorporate, for instance, the case that fractional counting
for publications and citations is applied.

Abstract:
Background
The amount of scientific literature available is often overwhelming,
making it difficult for researchers to have a good overview of the
literature and to see relations between different developments.
Visualisation techniques based on bibliometric data are helpful in
obtaining an overview of the literature on complex research topics, and
have been applied here to the topic of patient safety (PS).
Methods
On the basis of title words and citation relations, publications in the
period 2000-2010 related to PS were identified in the Scopus
bibliographic database. A visualisation of the most frequently cited PS
publications was produced based on direct and indirect citation
relations between publications. Terms were extracted from titles and
abstracts of the publications, and a visualisation of the most important
terms was created. The main PS-related topics studied in the literature
were identified using a technique for clustering publications and terms.
Results
A total of 8480 publications were identified, of which the 1462 most
frequently cited ones were included in the visualisation. The
publications were clustered into 19 clusters, which were grouped into
three categories: (1) magnitude of PS problems (42% of all included
publications); (2) PS risk factors (31%) and (3) implementation of
solutions (19%). In the visualisation of PS-related terms, five clusters
were identified: (1) medication; (2) measuring harm; (3) PS culture; (4)
physician; (5) training, education and communication. Both analysis at
publication and term level indicate an increasing focus on risk factors.
Conclusions
A bibliometric visualisation approach makes it possible to analyse large
amounts of literature. This approach is very useful for improving one's
understanding of a complex research topic such as PS and for suggesting
new research directions or alternative research priorities. For PS
research, the approach suggests that more research on implementing PS
improvement initiatives might be needed.
