Thank you for the recommendation.

As for the particular problem I am looking at it might assist if I quote Carnap "An Introduction to The Philosophy of Science".  Carnap argued that there are three kinds of concepts in science, as well as in everyday life: 'classificatory', 'comparative' and 'quantitative'.
