Abstract:
To shed light on the general patterns and trends in urban sprawl
research, and to provide reference for future study, bibliometric
analysis and refined analysis are conducted for publications in this
area from 1991 to 2011. The general publication output, the global
geographical distribution of the authors, the funding and institutions
involved, the research areas, and the source titles are analyzed and
discussed. Scholars in the United States and China have produced most of
the documents in urban sprawl and these two countries are also the
largest contributors in terms of funding and institutions.
'Environmental Sciences & Ecology', 'Urban Studies', and 'Geography' are
the most common research areas, and the journal titled Urban Studies has
contributed the most articles. Furthermore, the refined analyses on the
500 top-cited and most relevant publications have revealed that research
on urban sprawl is closely associated with the categories of 'Urban form
and development', 'Land use/land development' and
'environment/ecology/biology'. Conclusions are made with respect to the
basic paradigm of research on urban sprawl. The multi-disciplinary
research into urban sprawl are expected to be more diversified and
integrated.

Abstract:
Background: We sought to analyze the growing worldwide trends of
intracranial aneurysm research, investigate China's recent contribution,
and compare the contributions of mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
Methods: Global and China intracranial aneurysm-related publications
were retrieved from the Web of Science database from 1991 to 2012. Excel
2007, Matlab, and Thomson Data Analyzer (TDA) software were used to
analyze the search results for number of publications, cited frequency,
h-index, and organization contributions.
Results: 16468 global papers were identified that were cited 273500
times until 2013-08-15. The United States accounted for 31.497% of the
articles, 58.64% of the citations, and the highest h-index (127). Japan
and Germany followed in frequency. China's articles ranked eighth (third
in 2012) in total number, with most of the contributions occurring since
2002 (91.33%). China was at the early stage of the logic growth curve
(exponential growth), with the citation frequency and h-index per year
increasing. The quality of the publications was low. The main research
centers were located in Beijing, Shanghai, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. The
main Asian funding body was the National Natural Science Foundation of
China. The number of publications and frequency of citations of papers
from mainland China was greater than that of Taiwan or Hong Kong.
Conclusion: Global intracranial aneurysm research has been developing
swiftly since 1991, with the United States making the largest
contribution. Research in China started later, in 2002. Since then,
China has increased its rate of publication, and became the third
largest contributor by 2012.

The impact factor of a journal is a poor measure of the clinical relevance of its papers

Abstract:
We evaluated the top 13 journals in trauma and orthopaedics by impact
factor and looked at the longer-term effect regarding citations of their
papers.
All 4951 papers published in these journals during 2007 and 2008 were
reviewed and categorised by their type, subspecialty and
super-specialty. All citations indexed through Google Scholar were
reviewed to establish the rate of citation per paper at two, four and
five years post-publication. The top five journals published a total of
1986 papers. Only three (0.15%) were on operative orthopaedic surgery
and none were on trauma. Most (n = 1084, 54.5%) were about experimental
basic science. Surgical papers had a lower rate of citation (2.18) at
two years than basic science or clinical medical papers (4.68). However,
by four years the rates were similar (26.57 for surgery, 30.35 for basic
science/medical), which suggests that there is a considerable time lag
before clinical surgical research has an impact.
We conclude that high impact journals do not address clinical research
in surgery and when they do, there is a delay before such papers are
cited. We suggest that a rate of citation at five years post-publication
might be a more appropriate indicator of importance for papers in our
specialty.

Abstract:
Science journal impact indicators are not comparable because of inherent
differences in publication and citation behaviors from field to field. A
breakdown of the field aggregate impact factor of databases shows that
for the 22 fields and four areas considered by Thomson Reuters, the
leading provider of science indicators, five variables largely explain
variance in impact factor of a given field. Therefore, it is necessary
to consider all these sources of variance in the standardization process
of the impact indicators. A Principal Component Analysis is employed to
find the sources of the variance and a Cluster Analysis is used to
detect similarities.

Abstract:
Background: Research antibodies are used by thousands of scientists
working in diverse disciplines, but it is common to hear concerns about
antibody quality. This means that researchers need to carefully choose
the antibodies they use to avoid wasting time and money. A well accepted
way of selecting a research antibody is to identify one which has been
used previously, where the associated data has been peer-reviewed and
the results published.
Description: CiteAb is a searchable database which ranks antibodies by
the number of times they have been cited. This allows researchers to
easily find antibodies that have been used in peer-reviewed publications
and the accompanying citations are listed, so users can check the data
contained within the publications. This makes CiteAb a useful resource
for identifying antibodies for experiments and also for finding
information to demonstrate antibody validation. The database currently
contains 1,400,000 antibodies which are from 90 suppliers, including 87
commercial companies and 3 academic resources. Associated with these
antibodies are 140,000 publications which provide 306,000 antibody
citations. In addition to searching, users can also browse through the
antibodies and add their own publications to the CiteAb database.
Conclusions: CiteAb provides a new way for researchers to find research
antibodies that have been used successfully in peer-reviewed
publications. It aims to assist these researchers and will hopefully
help promote progress in many areas of life science research.

Abstract:
In an article in the pages of this journal five years ago, we described
a method for predicting which scientific papers will be highly cited in
the future, even if they are currently not highly cited. Applying the
method to real citation data we made predictions about papers we
believed would end up being well cited. Here we revisit those
predictions, five years on, to see how well we did. Among the over 2000
papers in our original data set, we examine the fifty that, by the
measures of our previous study, were predicted to do best and we find
that they have indeed received substantially more citations in the
intervening years than other papers, even after controlling for the
number of prior citations. On average these top fifty papers have
received 23 times as many citations in the last five years as the
average paper in the data set as a whole, and 15 times as many as the
average paper in a randomly drawn control group that started out with
the same number of citations. Applying our prediction technique to
current data, we also make new predictions of papers that we believe
will be well cited in the next few years.Copyright (c) EPLA, 2014
