Abstract:
This bibliometric analysis aims to check the status and evolution of
research activity from 1997 to 2011 within the fields of study of the
category "Agronomy" of the Web of Science database. With a focus on
articles and reviews, almost 88,000 publications were found (92.4% in
English); of which 88% were carried out by research centers of the
thirty countries with the highest production. For each article,
quantitative and qualitative parameters (number of publications,
international collaborations, authors, research centers, year *impact
factor*, and number of citations per article) were analyzed,
establishing rankings of countries and research centers. The study is
complemented by an analysis of the evolution of the principal research
topics through the study of keywords and with an analysis of the
journals in the category. An increase in collaboration on all scales
(authors, centers, and countries) indicates a greater globalization and
structuration of the research carried out, with more complex and
articulated research networks. The USA is the most important country in
publication productivity with 22.5% of the total publications and
thirty-five of the 100 most productive research centers. The spectacular
growth in research carried out in emerging countries, such as Brazil,
the People's Republic of China, or India, challenges this leadership. In
Europe, the levels of production have experienced a moderate increase,
with high levels in indicators of impact and collaboration standing out.

Abstract:
Background: There has been a rapid expansion in the number of research
papers published on clinical epilepsy topics and the number of journals
in the medical field. In this expanding publishing environment, the
question arises as to how much of the published medical literature has
'enduring value' in terms of advancing knowledge in any significant way.
Methods: We developed a methodology to assess the enduring value of
papers published in the field of clinical epilepsy and established its
internal validity. We studied 300 research papers published in 1981,
1991, and 2001 (100 in each year) and assessed their enduring value in
four domains: citations in the last year, citations in the last 10
years, citations in the standard epilepsy textbook, and a subjective
assessment by an experienced epileptologist.
Results: Of the 300 papers, 214 (71%) were categorized as having 'no
enduring value', and only 11(4%) were identified as having 'high
enduring value'. The 'high enduring value' papers could generally be
identified immediately on publication, by high initial citation values,
and were also more likely to be published in journals with a high
*impact factor*. The commonest characteristics of a paper with no
enduring value were that they reported research that was inherently
unimportant (55.6%), not novel (38.8%), or had significant
methodological flaws (22.0%).
Conclusions: Although there are other reasons for publishing papers, the
fact that the great majority of published papers lack enduring value in
terms of advancing knowledge should be a concern to the medical and
scientific community. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
The objective of this paper is to analyse the scientific activity of
dental sciences over the last 30 years.
Dental-research output was identified by retrieving all citable dental
documents in the Web of Science (WoS) database in the periods 1986-1988,
1996-1998, and 2006-2008. For this, a two-phase search strategy was
designed: firstly, output in Dentistry, Oral Surgery, and Medicine
(DOSM) Journal Citation Reports (JCR) category journals were compiled;
secondly, for journal documents of other JCR categories but related to
Dentistry (Non-DOSM), an innovative search strategy was designed based
on a double criterion, thematic and institutional.
The results showed that DOSM production increased in absolute but
decreased in relative terms over the last 30 years. The JCR categories
where dental researchers publish also varied. Surprisingly, the
geographic distribution of the production shows a growing concentration
of the steadily fewer countries, a previously undescribed phenomenon,
while the thematic analysis reveals that this production continued to
form four broad thematic areas encompassing the remaining specialties:
Dental Materials Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, and General Dentistry.
Scientific production in dentistry has changed in the past three decades
both quantitatively and qualitatively, as well as their geographical
distribution despite being structured around the same specialties.
In this study, along with some key messages about the key shifts in
publication trends, in terms of subject, where published and by whom, we
propose a new methodology which could be useful to professionals as well
as researchers, in which the exhaustivity and precision rates for
scientific information retrieval improve.

Title:
Why Has the Number of *Scientific* Retractions Increased?

Abstract:
Background: The number of retracted scientific publications has risen
sharply, but it is unclear whether this reflects an increase in
publication of flawed articles or an increase in the rate at which
flawed articles are withdrawn.
Methods and Findings: We examined the interval between publication and
retraction for 2,047 retracted articles indexed in PubMed.
Time-to-retraction (from publication of article to publication of
retraction) averaged 32.91 months. Among 714 retracted articles
published in or before 2002, retraction required 49.82 months; among
1,333 retracted articles published after 2002, retraction required 23.82
months (p<0.0001). This suggests that journals are retracting papers
more quickly than in the past, although recent articles requiring
retraction may not have been recognized yet. To test the hypothesis that
time-to-retraction is shorter for articles that receive careful
scrutiny, time-to-retraction was correlated with journal *impact factor*
(IF). Time-to-retraction was significantly shorter for high-IF journals,
but only similar to 1% of the variance in time-to-retraction was
explained by increased scrutiny. The first article retracted for
plagiarism was published in 1979 and the first for duplicate publication
in 1990, showing that articles are now retracted for reasons not cited
in the past. The proportional impact of authors with multiple
retractions was greater in 1972-1992 than in the current era (p<0.001).
>From 1972-1992, 46.0% of retracted papers were written by authors with a
single retraction; from 1993 to 2012, 63.1% of retracted papers were
written by single-retraction authors (p<0.001).
Conclusions: The increase in retracted articles appears to reflect
changes in the behavior of both authors and institutions. Lower barriers
to publication of flawed articles are seen in the increase in number and
proportion of retractions by authors with a single retraction. Lower
barriers to retraction are apparent in an increase in retraction for
"new" offenses such as plagiarism and a decrease in the
time-to-retraction of flawed work.

For each article,
quantitative and qualitative parameters (number of publications,
international collaborations, authors, research centers, year impact
factor, and number of citations per article) were analyzed, establishing
rankings of countries and research centers. The study is complemented by
an analysis of the evolution of the principal research topics through
the study of keywords and with an analysis of the journals in the
category. An increase in collaboration on all scales (authors, centers,
and countries) indicates a greater globalization and structuration of
the research carried out, with more complex and articulated research
networks. The USA is the most important country in publication
productivity with 22.5% of the total publications and thirty-five of the
100 most productive research centers. The spectacular growth in research

Abstract:
Objective
Online health knowledge resources contain answers to most of the
information needs raised by clinicians in the course of care. However,
significant barriers limit the use of these resources for
decision-making, especially clinicians' lack of time. In this study we
assessed the feasibility of automatically generating knowledge summaries
for a particular clinical topic composed of relevant sentences extracted
from Medline citations.
Methods
The proposed approach combines information retrieval and semantic
information extraction techniques to identify relevant sentences from
Medline abstracts. We assessed this approach in two case studies on the
treatment alternatives for depression and Alzheimer's disease.
Results
A total of 515 of 564 (91.3%) sentences retrieved in the two case
studies were relevant to the topic of interest. About one-third of the
relevant sentences described factual knowledge or a study conclusion
that can be used for supporting information needs at the point of care.
Conclusions
The high rate of relevant sentences is desirable, given that clinicians'
lack of time is one of the main barriers to using knowledge resources at
the point of care. Sentence rank was not significantly associated with
relevancy, possibly due to most sentences being highly relevant.
Sentences located closer to the end of the abstract and sentences with
treatment and comparative predications were likely to be conclusive
sentences. Our proposed technical approach to helping clinicians meet
their information needs is promising. The approach can be extended for
other knowledge resources and information need types.

Abstract:
Aims: Since the publication of the 2006 International Children's
Continence Society (ICCS) guidelines on terminologies for lower urinary
tract dysfunction in children, little is known of their impact. In this
study, we aim to quantify the adherence to the guidelines in the
published literature, and to examine whether Medical Subject Headings
(MeSH) in MEDLINE reflect the recommended "new" ICCS terminology.
Methods: Seven pairs of pre-specified paired terms (obsolete and
recommended by the ICCS) were searched, limited to paediatric literature
published between 2002 and 2010. Their use in the literature was
compared between the pre-guideline (2002-2005) and post-guideline
(2007-2010) period and across geographical regions. MeSH in MEDLINE were
examined for the use of ICCS preferred terminology. Results:
Publications in paediatric urinary incontinence have shown a 49%
increase from 2002-2005 to 2007-2010 (55-82 per year). There was about a
fourfold increase in the likelihood of usage of ICCS recommended
terminologies post ICCS guideline publication (OR: 4.19, 95% CI:
3.04-5.78, P < 0.001). Approximately 25% of the studies published
between 2007 and 2010 used obsolete terminologies. Analysis indicated
satisfactory uptake for most terms, with the exception of "urotherapy."
There was no significant geographical variation in uptake. More than
half of the ICCS-recommended terms (4/7) did not appear in the current
MeSH indexing tree and scope notes. Conclusions: Overall uptake of
recommended terms following release of ICCS terminology guidelines was
encouraging although it remains suboptimal for certain terms. Efforts
need to be made to improve the current MEDLINE indexing so that MeSH
terms reflect terminology recommended by the ICCS. Neurourol. Urodynam.

The 'Economy of Memory': Publications, Citations, and the Paradox of Effective Research Governance

Abstract:
More recent advancements in digital technologies have significantly
alleviated the dissemination of new scientific ideas as well as the
storing, searching and retrieval of large amounts of published research
findings. While not denying the benefits of this novel 'economy of
memory,' this paper endeavors to shed light on the ways in which the use
of digital technologies may be linked to a distortion of the system of
formal publications that facilitates the effective dissemination and
collaborative building of scientific knowledge. Through combining three
different strands of discussion that are often left separate - those
pertaining to the cognitive effects of new technological memory systems,
those pertaining to citation and publishing practices, and those
regarding the effects of formalizing modes of research governance - it
is also shown that this distortion is not merely a consequence of
technological developments alone. Rather, such a distortion is
inseparable from and potentially aggravated by the spreading of
increasingly dysfunctional, formalizing research governance mechanisms.
It is argued that these mechanisms run the risk of fostering the
proliferation of knowledge practices that are characterized by an
increasing degree of superficiality as well as the strategic publication
of research that is of a decreasing degree of originality. If left
unaddressed, this may pose a serious threat to the efficiency and
effectiveness of the formal record of scientific knowledge as a tool for
the dissemination of original research. By extension, this may in the
long run seriously undermine the capacity of the publicly funded
research system more generally.

Abstract:
Purpose - This paper aims to provide a new insight into the reasons why
authors cite.
Design/methodology/approach - The authors argue that, based on
philosophical ideas about the essence of things, pure rational thinking
about the role of citations leads to the answer.
Findings - Citations originate from the interestingness of the
investigated phenomenon. The essence of citation lies in the interaction
between different ideas or perspectives on a phenomenon addressed in the
citing as well as in the cited articles.
Research limitations/implications - The findings only apply to ethical
(not whimsical or self-serving) citations. As such citations reflect
interactions of scientific ideas, they can reveal the evolution of
science, revive the cognitive process of an investigated scientific
phenomenon and reveal political and economic factors influencing the
development of science.
Originality/value - This article is the first to propose interestingness
and the interaction of ideas as the basic reason for citing. This view
on citations allows reverse engineering from citations to ideas and
hence becomes useful for science policy.

Title:
How can *journal* impact factors be normalized across fields of science? An assessment in terms of percentile ranks and fractional counts

Abstract:
Using the CD-ROM version of the Science Citation Index 2010 (N = 3,705
journals), we study the (combined) effects of (a) fractional counting on
the impact factor (IF) and (b) transformation of the skewed citation
distributions into a distribution of 100 percentiles and six percentile
rank classes (top-1%, top-5%, etc.). Do these approaches lead to
field-normalized impact measures for journals? In addition to the 2-year
IF (IF2), we consider the 5-year IF (IF5), the respective numerators of
these IFs, and the number of Total Cites, counted both as integers and
fractionally. These various indicators are tested against the hypothesis
that the classification of journals into 11 broad fields by
PatentBoard/NSF (National Science Foundation) provides statistically
significant between-field effects. Using fractional counting the
between-field variance is reduced by 91.7% in the case of IF5, and by
79.2% in the case of IF2. However, the differences in citation counts
are not significantly affected by fractional counting. These results
accord with previous studies, but the longer citation window of a
fractionally counted IF5 can lead to significant improvement in the
normalization across fields.

Abstract:
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to relate the problems identified
about scholarly journal publishing in Malaysia to establish motivation
for the system development; to describe the design of MyCite, a
Malaysian citation indexing system and to highlight the added value to
journals and articles indexed through the generation of bibliometrics
performance reports.
Design/methodology/approach - The system uses a rapid prototyping
method, modeling the functions identified in the Web of Science
databases and Scopus, as the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia
requires the system to be ready within a year, mainly to help improve
the quality, accessibility and performance of Malaysian scholarly
journals.
Findings - The paper shows the relational tables and module functions in
MyCite; highlights the value added to bibliographic data through
performance reports of authors, journals, institutions, country and
bibliographical control of Malaysian journals; and provides performance
tables of top authors, rank list of 75 journals by yearly impact factor,
and other bibliometric indices.
Research limitations/implications - The paper highlight the problems in
gaining access to full contents of journals, authors' adoption of
variant names, and the vast variations in referencing style adopted by
publishers, which may result in inaccurate counting and lost citations.
Originality/value - The strength of MyCite is in its reference editor
module, which is a programme that segments article references into
manageable chunks that helps speed up the data preparation for citation
counting. MyCite improves the availability and visibility of Malaysian
journals, enriches national research content, and provides better
knowledge of national research outputs funded by universities and
research institutions.

Abstract:
Purpose - In addition to quantitative analysis, the purpose of this
paper is to measure the quality of articles published in foreign LIS
journals by Pakistani authors based on their Impact Factor (IF) scores
reported in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) of 2010; also to discuss
the significance and implications of this study for the current and
potential authors in Pakistan and other developing countries.
Design/methodology/approach - The data for this study were collected
from two sets of sources: first, online sources of Google Scholar, LISA,
LISTA, an online 50-year cumulative index of Pakistani LIS literature,
and web pages of several authors; and second, printed indexes and
bibliographies. The data collected were manually entered into MS Excel
for tabulation and created nine tables, which formed the basis of
discussion in the paper.
Findings - The contribution of Pakistani authors to foreign LIS journals
is reasonable in number and below average in quality, according to the
JCR IF scores. The authorship patterns show that there is a shift from
single-authorship to collaborative authorship. The contribution of
academics is several times higher than that of library practitioners.
Likewise the non-resident Pakistani authors' share in the global LIS
literature is much larger as compared to their counterparts living in
Pakistan.
Originality/value - This is the first study that evaluates the quality
of Pakistani LIS literature using the more popular journal ranking
method, JCR IF. The results of this study are expected to have a
positive impact on Pakistani authors as they start preparing articles
according to the quality requirements of JCR-ranked journals in the
future.
