Abstract:
Although the field of Communication Sciences has been slower to organize
in Spain than in other European countries and the United States, in
recent years it has shown a clear tendency to growth. One way to trace
this process is by analyzing scientific production, and this paper
focuses on this aspect. Using bibliometric methods, we analyze
scientific journals and papers indexed in Thomson Reuter's international
database, the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) for Communication.
While the focus of the study is Spanish scientific output, the results
are related to international activities in this field. The three Spanish
journals included in SSCI in recent years: "Comunicar", "Comunicacion y
Sociedad" and "Estudios sobre el Mensaje Periodistico" were studied in
detail. The results show that Spain plays an important role in
Communcation journal publishing (4th in the world) and as a producer of
scientific papers (6th in the world), with a remarkable evolution, in
quantitative terms, especially in the last five years. The inclusion of
these three Spanish journals in the international database has been an
important contribution to the country's visibility in this field, but
there is still a need to promote international collaboration to achieve
greater impact and openness in the scientific community.

Abstract:
Google Scholar Metrics' launch in April 2012, a new bibliometric tool
for the evaluation of scientific journals by means of citation counting,
has ended with the duopoly exerted by the Web of Science and Scopus
databases. This paper aims at comparing the coverage of these three
databases and the similarity their journal rankings may have. We
selected a sample of journals from the field of Communication Studies
indexed in the three databases. Data was recollected on 17-20 November,
2012. 277 journals were identified to which we calculated their h-index
and ranked them according to such indicator. Then, we analyzed the
correlation between the rankings generated. Google Scholar Metrics
dobles the coverage of the other databases, reducing the bias toward
English language both; web of Science and Scopus have. Google Scholar
Metrics shows higher h-index values (an average 47% higher than Scopus
and 40% higher than Web of Science), allowing to better rank journals.
We conclude that Google Scholar Metrics is a tool capable of identifying
the main journals in Communication Studies offering results as reliable
and valid as the ones Web of Science and Scopus show.

Abstract:
The media in general, and advertising in particular, are considered as
important agents of socialization, including gender-related issues. Thus
the legislator has focused on the regulation of the images of women and
men in advertisements. However, regulations prohibiting sexist
advertising in Spain pay specific attention to audiovisual media. The
objective of this study is to check whether this unequal interest also
takes place in academic research. This paper analyzes the differences in
the scientific literature (national and international) on the sexism in
advertising depending on the media. Specifically we examine the
methodology, techniques and ways to measure concepts. In order to do
this, we conducted a systematic review of studies on gender and
advertising published in Spanish or English between 1988 and 2010 in
seven databases -Spanish (Dialnet, Compludoc, ISOC), or international
(Scopus, Sociological Abstracts, PubMed and Eric)-. The main results of
the 175 texts analyzed show that, unlike legislative controls, the
academy has studied mainly sexism in advertising in print media,
although interest by analysis of the treatment of gender in the
discourse of advertising audiovisual seems to be increasing.

Abstract:
Given the importance of cross-disciplinary research (CDR), facilitating
CDR effectiveness is a priority for many institutions and funding
agencies. There are a number of CDR types, however, and the
effectiveness of facilitation efforts will require sensitivity to that
diversity. This article presents a method characterizing a spectrum of
CDR designed to inform facilitation efforts that relies on bibliometric
techniques and citation data. We illustrate its use by the Toolbox
Project, an ongoing effort to enhance cross-disciplinary communication
in CDR teams through structured, philosophical dialogue about research
assumptions in a workshop setting. Toolbox Project workshops have been
conducted with more than 85 research teams, but the project's
extensibility to an objectively characterized range of CDR
collaborations has not been examined. To guide wider application of the
Toolbox Project, we have developed a method that uses multivariate
statistical analyses of transformed citation proportions from published
manuscripts to identify candidate areas of CDR, and then overlays
information from previous Toolbox participant groups on these areas to
determine candidate areas for future application. The approach supplies
3 results of general interest:
1. A way to employ small data sets and familiar statistical techniques
to characterize CDR spectra as a guide to scholarship on CDR patterns
and trends.
2. A model for using bibliometric techniques to guide broadly applicable
interventions similar to the Toolbox.
3. A method for identifying the location of collaborative CDR teams on a
map of scientific activity, of use to research administrators, research
teams, and other efforts to enhance CDR projects.

Abstract:
Historically, co-citation models have been based only on bibliographic
information. Full-text analysis offers the opportunity to significantly
improve the quality of the signals upon which these co-citation models
are based. In this work we study the effect of reference proximity on
the accuracy of co-citation clusters. Using a corpus of 270,521 full
text documents from 2007, we compare the results of traditional
co-citation clustering using only the bibliographic information to
results from co-citation clustering where proximity between reference
pairs is factored into the pairwise relationships. We find that
accounting for reference proximity from full text can increase the
textual coherence (a measure of accuracy) of a co-citation cluster
solution by up to 30% over the traditional approach based on
bibliographic information.

Abstract:
In this article, we use innovative full-text citation analysis along
with supervised topic modeling and network-analysis algorithms to
enhance classical bibliometric analysis and publication/author/venue
ranking. By utilizing citation contexts extracted from a large number of
full-text publications, each citation or publication is represented by a
probability distribution over a set of predefined topics, where each
topic is labeled by an author-contributed keyword. We then used
publication/citation topic distribution to generate a citation graph
with vertex prior and edge transitioning probability distributions. The
publication importance score for each given topic is calculated by
PageRank with edge and vertex prior distributions. To evaluate this
work, we sampled 104 topics (labeled with keywords) in review papers.
The cited publications of each review paper are assumed to be "important
publications" for the target topic (keyword), and we use these cited
publications to validate our topic-ranking result and to compare
different publication-ranking lists. Evaluation results show that
full-text citation and publication content prior topic distribution,
along with the classical PageRank algorithm can significantly enhance
bibliometric analysis and scientific publication ranking performance,
comparing with term frequency-inverted document frequency (tf-idf),
language model, BM25, PageRank, and PageRank + language model (p <
.001), for academic information retrieval (IR) systems.

Abstract:
This article analyzes the context of citations within the full text of
research articles. It studies articles published in a single journal:
the Journal of Informetrics (JOI), in the first year the journal was
published, 2007. The analysis classified the citations into in-and
out-disciplinary content and looked at their use within the articles'
sections such as introduction, literature review, methodology, findings,
discussion, and conclusions. In addition, it took into account the age
of cited articles. A thematic analysis of these citations was performed
in order to identify the evolution of topics within the articles
sections and the journal's content. A matrix describing the
relationships between the citations' use, and their in- and
out-disciplinary focus within the articles' sections is presented. The
findings show that an analysis of citations based on their in-and
out-disciplinary orientation within the context of the articles'
sections can be an indication of the manner by which cross-disciplinary
science works, and reveals the connections between the issues, methods,
analysis, and conclusions coming from different research disciplines.

STATISTICAL SIGNIFICANCE; SUBMISSION; TRIALS
Abstract:
Objective: Publication speed of peer-reviewed journals may play a major
role in early dissemination of knowledge and may raise the citation
index. In this study, we evaluated the publication speed of
ophthalmology journals.
Design: Observational study.
Participants: Observational study of bibliometric data in published
ophthalmology journals.
Methods: A list of ophthalmic journals featured in the 2010 Journal
Citation Report was obtained on September 1, 2011. A total of 12
articles were chosen randomly from each of these journals published
between January and December 2010. Median publication time and
interquartile range (IQR) were obtained from the full texts of the
published articles.
Main Outcome Measures: Time lag between submission and revision,
acceptance, and publication of the manuscripts was calculated.
Correlation between publication time lag and journal impact factor as
well as advance online publication was analyzed.
Results: A total of 51 ophthalmic journals were included. There was no
statistically significant difference in the impact factors of journals
based on their reporting of submission, revision, or acceptance times of
the manuscripts (both P>0.05, Wilcoxon test). The median peer review and
publication time of all ophthalmology journals was 133 days (IQR,
100.5-171.5) and 100 days (IQR, 62.9-166.3), respectively. There was no
correlation between the journal impact factors and publication time lag
(Spearman correlation). Approximately half of the ophthalmology journals
(n = 26; 50.98%) published online in advance. Journals with advance
online publication had higher impact factors compared with those without
this feature (median, 1.692 [IQR, 1.05-2.80] vs. 1.02 [0.39-1.53]; P =
0.015, Manne-Whitney U test). For journals with advance online
publication, the median time from acceptance to advance online
publication (74.3 days [IQR, 48.3-115 days]) was significantly shorter
than the median time between acceptance and print publication (170.75
days [IQR, 101.4-217 days]; P<0.001, Wilcoxon test).
Conclusions: Publication time lag in ophthalmology journals was not
correlated with journal impact factors. Advance online publication
facility was provided by only half of the ophthalmology journals
published in 2010. Journals with advance online publication had a higher
impact factor compared with those without this feature. (c) 2013 by the

Abstract:
Objective: We performed a bibliometric study on scientific publications
on atypical antipsychotic drugs (AADs) from Australia.
Methods: Using the EMBASE and MEDLINE databases, we chose those
documents produced in Australia between 1993 and 2011, whose title
included the descriptors atypic* (atypical*), antipsychotic*,
second-generation antipsychotic*, clozapine, risperidone, olanzapine,
ziprasidone, quetiapine, sertindole, aripiprazole, paliperidone,
amisulpride, zotepine, asenapine, iloperidone, lurasidone, perospirone
and blonanserin. We applied bibliometric indicators of production as
well as dispersion.
Results: We identified 438 relevant publications. The most widely
studied AADs were clozapine (162 documents), olanzapine (103),
risperidone (77) and quetiapine (42). There was a lack of exponential
growth in publications over time, indicated by non-fulfilment of Price's
Law (correlation coefficient r=0.9195 after exponential adjustment vs.
r=0.9253 after linear adjustment). Publications appeared in 148
different journals, with four of the top nine journals having an impact
factor greater than 3; 84 of the articles appeared in the Australian and
New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry.
Conclusion: Despite Australian publications on AADs appearing in
reasonably high impact journals, most were confined to a single
Australian psychiatry journal and overall publications did not show
exponential growth over the period studied. This might reflect, inter
alia, the relative paucity of medication trials being performed in
Australia.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to gain a deeper understanding of the nexus
between the use of citation counts as a measure of scientific impact,
citations as indicator of scientific impact, citation distributions of
scientific papers, citation analysis as a tool in journal evaluation,
and the validity and reliability of citation counts in research
assessments. The mainstay of the paper is formed by an analysis of the
extent to which the impact factor indicates the quality of a journal,
the biases of the impact factor, excessive orientation towards the
impact factor, citation counts and impact factors as quality indicators
to judge journals, and the use of the impact factor as a metric of
journal status.

Abstract:
Historically, co-citation models have been based only on *bibliographic*
information. Full-text analysis offers the opportunity to significantly
improve the quality of the signals upon which these co-citation models
are based. In this work we study the effect of reference proximity on
the accuracy of co-citation clusters. Using a corpus of 270,521 full
text documents from 2007, we compare the results of traditional
co-citation clustering using only the *bibliographic* information to
results from co-citation clustering where proximity between reference
pairs is factored into the pairwise relationships. We find that
accounting for reference proximity from full text can increase the
textual coherence (a measure of accuracy) of a co-citation cluster
solution by up to 30% over the traditional approach based on
*bibliographic* information.

Sociology in a Transnational Perspective: Brussels, 1890-1925

Abstract:
In the late nineteenth century, numerous well-established university
disciplines progressively widened their geographical breadth from
national to international. In the case of sociology, an international
infrastructure was founded from the start of the process of
institutionalization of the discipline itself. Internationalist beliefs
and projects did not diminish the importance of being locally and
nationally embedded, however. This contribution explores one specific
case: the role of transnational discourses and practices at the Brussels
Institute of Sociology, which was founded in 1902. The transnational and
at the same time intellectually closed character of the institute is
traced back to older networks, ideas and institutions: the universalist
*bibliographical* initiatives of Paul Otlet and Henri La Fontaine, the
Universite nouvelle and its positivist ideal of science and education,
the peculiar scientific worldview of the institute's principal Maecenas,
Ernest Solvay, and the reinterpretation of this intellectual heritage by
its first director Emile Waxweiler. The latter two gave the Brussels
institute a clear intellectual profile but also caused a form of
academic isolation. That would change once the institute became fully
integrated in the Brussels' University after the war. The missionary
kind of internationalism that had characterized pre-war sociology faded
then as well.
