Thank you all for the reference to the Haustein book as well as the extra hyperlinks to the sources on the impact factor revolt, i.e.,

http://am.ascb.org/dora/<http://ASCB.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT0yMzYxNjc4JnA9MSZ1PTc2ODM2MDYwNCZsaT0xMjExNTkwMw/index.html>.

http://scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2013/05/21/impact-crater-does-dora-need-to-attack-the-impact-factor-to-reform-how-the-it-is-used-in-academia/

I did not know of these when I sent out the Chronicle article almost as a practical joke to ruffle a lot of feathers.

For myself I mentally signed the DORA declaration a long time ago at least as the impact factor has been used for evaluative purposes. Thus, for me, this all is beating on a horse that has long been dead—basically killed by Seglen in the 1990s. For some odd reason, I have become to regarded as leading expert on the impact factor, and editors always give me impact factor papers to referee. It is hard to referee papers, whose mathematics are incomprehensible and whose premises are false. You cannot impose your views, because that would be imposing censorship, and everybody has a right to be stupid, including myself. (My life has been based on this premise). These articles are serious efforts and part of a major controversy, and the argument needs to be aired, even though I think it is silly. I call all this stuff “artifacts of the impact factor industry.” Now if I ever get more impact factor articles to referee, I can ask the authors to take a position in respect to DORA. That should allow some fresh air to enter their thinking.

Respectfully,

FWIW, here is a critical response to the DORA initiative: http://scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2013/05/21/impact-crater-does-dora-need-to-attack-the-impact-factor-to-reform-how-the-it-is-used-in-academia/

Dear ASCB Current and Lapsed Members,

ASCB is leading a “scholarly insurrection,” with the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment, DORA for short, to reduce the impact of journal impact factors (JIF) on scientific assessment. Our allies include AAAS, HHMI, EMBO, and numerous other societies, institutions, and individuals. JIF were created for buying library subscriptions, but they have been misused as an all-purpose metric to assess the quality of science. This is deeply flawed, so the coalition wants to steer the scientific community back to a focus on the content of papers, not the impact factor of the journal where they happen to be published.

Please help us spread the word about DORA: http://am.ascb.org/dora/<http://ASCB.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT0yMzYxNjc4JnA9MSZ1PTc2ODM2MDYwNCZsaT0xMjExNTkwMw/index.html>. We hope you will sign the declaration, and encourage all your scientific colleagues to do so as well.

We started with 155 individual and 78 institutional signers. In three business days, the numbers have grown to over 800 and over 100, respectively. But we are aiming for 5,000 signers, so we need your help!

Thanks for helping ASCB and the entire scientific community with this important initiative.
