Abstract:
Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine whether the distribution of publications among academic radiology departments in the United States is Gaussian (ie, the bell curve) or Paretian.
Methods: The search affiliation feature of the PubMed database was used to search for publications in 3 general radiology journals with high Impact Factors, originating at radiology departments in the United States affiliated with residency training programs. The distribution of the number of publications among departments was examined using chi(2) test statistics to determine whether it followed a Pareto or a Gaussian distribution more closely.
Results: A total of 14,219 publications contributed since 1987 by faculty members in 163 departments with residency programs were available for assessment. The data acquired were more consistent with a Pareto (chi(2) = 80.4) than a Gaussian (chi(2) = 659.5) distribution. The mean number of publications for departments was 79.9 +/- 146 (range, 0-943). The median number of publications was 16.5. The majority (>50%) of major radiology publications from academic departments with residency programs originated in <10% (n = 15 of 178) of such departments. Fifteen programs likewise produced no publications in the surveyed journals.
Conclusion: The number of publications in journals with high Impact Factors published by academic radiology departments more closely fits a Pareto rather than a normal distribution.

Abstract:
What are the statistical practices of articles published in journals with a high impact factor? Are there differences compared with articles published in journals with a somewhat lower impact factor that have adopted editorial policies to reduce the impact of limitations of Null Hypothesis Significance Testing? To investigate these questions, the current study analyzed all articles related to psychological, neuropsychological and medical issues, published in 2011 in four journals with high impact factors: Science, Nature, The New England Journal of Medicine and The Lancet, and three journals with relatively lower impact factors: Neuropsychology, Journal of Experimental Psychology Applied and the American Journal of Public Health. Results show that Null Hypothesis Significance Testing without any use of confidence intervals, effect size, prospective power and model estimation, is the prevalent statistical practice used in articles published in Nature, 89%, followed by article!
s published in Science, 42%. By contrast, in all other journals, both with high and lower impact factors, most articles report confidence intervals and/or effect size measures. We interpreted these differences as consequences of the editorial policies adopted by the journal editors, which are probably the most effective means to improve the statistical practices in journals with high or low impact factors.

Abstract:
Knowledge management (KM) and data mining (DM) have become more important today, however, there are few comprehensive researches and categorization schemes to discuss the characteristics for both of them. Using a bibliometric approach, this paper analyzes KM and DM research trends, forecasts and citations from 1989 to 2009 by locating headings "knowledge management" and "data mining" in topics in the SSCI database. The bibliometric analytical technique was used to examine these two topics in SSCI journals from 1989 to 2009, we found 1393 articles with KM and 1181 articles with DM. This paper implemented and classified KM and DM articles using the following eight categories publication year, citation, country/territory, document type, institute name, language, source title and subject area for different distribution status in order to explore the differences and how KM and DM technologies have developed in this period and to analyze KM and DM technology tendencies under the a!
bove result. Also, the paper performs the K-S test to check whether the distribution of author article production follows Lotka's law. The research findings can be extended to investigate author productivity by analyzing variables such as chronological and academic age, number and frequency of previous publications, access to research grants, job status, etc. In such a way characteristics of high, medium and low publishing activity of authors can be identified. Besides, these findings will also help to judge scientific research trends and understand the scale of development of research in KM and DM through comparing the increases of the article author. Based on the above information, governments and enterprises may infer collective tendencies and demands for scientific researcher in KM and DM to formulate appropriate training strategies and policies in the future. This analysis provides a roadmap for future research, abstracts technology trend information and facilitates kn!
owledge accumulations, therefore the future research can conce!
 ntrated
in core categories. This implies that the phenomenon "success breeds success" is more common in higher quality publications. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
In 1981, James R. Karr's paper 'Assessment of biotic integrity using fish communities' provided the first description of a multimetric procedure to assess the biotic integrity of aquatic ecosystems. To assess the contribution of the Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) and ideas proposed by Karr for the management of aquatic ecosystems, we carried out a scientometric analysis of the papers published from 1981 to 2011 that cited Karr's study. The papers were obtained from Thomson Reuters' database (ISI Web of Knowledge) in October 2011. We used all papers that cited 'Karr, 1981' to assess temporal trends in citations and to identify which journals cited the index most frequently. A total of 93 papers were selected from the two journals that most frequently cited Karr's study, namely Hydrobiologia and Ecological Indicators. For each paper selected, we determined whether the study was empirical, theoretical, or methodological. For empirical papers we assessed the type of environment!
where the study was carried out, the indicator organisms used, and whether the IBI was applied. To identify which ideas suggested by Karr have been discussed in the literature, we assessed all papers found. In the time frame studied, 734 papers cited 'Karr, 1981'. The number of citations increased significantly with time. Most papers that cited 'Karr, 1981' were empirical, carried out in rivers and streams, and used fish as bioindicators. The main ideas discussed in these studies were related to the creation and use of the IBI, as well as to limitations and difficulties in its application. Our results suggest that the ideas proposed by Karr have contributed to the conservation of aquatic ecosystems. However, criteria for choosing different metrics, as well as the definition of reference conditions, are issues that need to be addressed in order to make the IBI a more robust index. Abstract:
Objective: The bibliometrics of the anesthesiology literature has shifted substantially during the past 3 decades. The present authors analyzed the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia (JCVA) at selected time intervals from 1990 to 2011 to quantify temporal variations in geographic publication patterns. The authors also determined whether previously described reductions in North American research productivity were accompanied by similar decreases in the number of other forms of publication in JCVA.
Design: An observational study.
Setting: Internet analysis.
Interventions: None.
Measurements and Main Results: The number of research articles, case reports and conferences, review articles, and letters in each issue of the journal were quantified in each of 4 time intervals consisting of consecutive 4-year periods (1990-1993, 1996-1999, 2002-2005, and 2008-2011). Forty-three countries published a total of 2,587 articles (ie, 1,141 research articles, 735 case reports, 175 review articles, and 536 letters) during the 4 time periods examined. Progressive decreases in the percentage of research articles, case reports, and letters, but not review articles, from North America were observed over time. Significant increases in the percentage of research articles and letters contributed by European authors in 2008 to 2011 were observed compared with 1990 to 1993. The percentage of all publications from the Middle East and Australasia increased significantly, whereas South America and Africa were relatively minor contributors to JCVA throughout the study period.
Conclusions: The present bibliometric analysis indicates that JCVA has changed from a journal that primarily published work from countries in North America and Europe to one in which the Middle East and Australasia now make a substantial number of contributions. These results suggest that JCVA has evolved into a truly international journal since its inception in 1987. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
This paper has two aims: (i) to introduce a novel method for measuring which part of overall citation inequality can be attributed to differences in citation practices across scientific fields, and (ii) to implement an empirical strategy for making meaningful comparisons between the number of citations received by articles in 22 broad fields. The number of citations received by any article is seen as a function of the article's scientific influence, and the field to which it belongs. A key assumption is that articles in the same quantile of any field citation distribution have the same degree of citation impact in their respective field. Using a dataset of 4.4 million articles published in 1998-2003 with a five-year citation window, we estimate that differences in citation practices between the 22 fields account for 14% of overall citation inequality. Our empirical strategy is based on the strong similarities found in the behavior of citation distributions. We obtain three m!
ain results. Firstly, we estimate a set of average-based indicators, called exchange rates, to express the citations received by any article in a large interval in terms of the citations received in a reference situation. Secondly, using our exchange rates as normalization factors of the raw citation data reduces the effect of differences in citation practices to, approximately, 2% of overall citation inequality in the normalized citation distributions. Thirdly, we provide an empirical explanation of why the usual normalization procedure based on the fields' mean citation rates is found to be equally successful.

Abstract:
Using the InCites tool of Thomson Reuters, this study compares normalized citation impact values calculated for China, Japan, France, Germany, United States, and the UK throughout the time period from 1981 to 2010. InCites offers a unique opportunity to study the normalized citation impacts of countries using (i) a long publication window (1981 to 2010), (ii) a differentiation in (broad or more narrow) subject areas, and (iii) allowing for the use of statistical procedures in order to obtain an insightful investigation of national citation trends across the years. Using four broad categories, our results show significantly increasing trends in citation impact values for France, the UK, and especially Germany across the last thirty years in all areas. The citation impact of papers from China is still at a relatively low level (mostly below the world average), but the country follows an increasing trend line. The USA exhibits a stable pattern of high citation impact values acr!
oss the years. With small impact differences between the publication years, the US trend is increasing in engineering and technology but decreasing in medical and health sciences as well as in agricultural sciences. Similar to the USA, Japan follows increasing as well as decreasing trends in different subject areas, but the variability across the years is small. In most of the years, papers from Japan perform below or approximately at the world average in each subject area.

Abstract:
In 1981, James R. Karr's paper 'Assessment of biotic integrity using fish communities' provided the first description of a multimetric procedure to assess the biotic integrity of aquatic ecosystems. To assess the contribution of the Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) and ideas proposed by Karr for the management of aquatic ecosystems, we carried out a *scientometric* analysis of the papers published from 1981 to 2011 that cited Karr's study. For empirical papers we assessed the type of environme!
nt where the study was carried out, the indicator organisms used, and whether the IBI was applied. Abstract:
We discuss a mechanism through which inversion symmetry (i.e., invariance of a joint probability density function under the exchange of variables) and Gibrat's law generate power-law distributions with different tail exponents. Using a dataset affirm size variables, that is, tangible fixed assets K, the number of workers L, and sales Y, we confirm that these variables have power-law tails with different exponents, and that inversion symmetry and Gibrat's law hold. Based on these findings, we argue that there exists a plane in the three dimensional space (log K, log L, logy), with respect to which the joint probability density function for the three variables is invariant under the exchange of variables. We provide empirical evidence suggesting that this plane fits the data well, and argue that the plane can be interpreted as the Cobb Douglas production function, which has been extensively used in various areas of economics since it was first introduced almost a century ago. !

Abstract:
Herein, we applied statistical physics to study incomes of three (low-, medium- and high-income) society classes instead of the two (low- and medium-income) classes studied so far. In the frame of the threshold nonlinear Langevin dynamics and its threshold Fokker-Planck counterpart, we derived a unified formula for description of income of all society classes, by way of example, of those of the European Union in years 2006 and 2008. Hence, the formula is more general than the well known formula of Yakovenko et al.. That is, our formula well describes not only two regions but simultaneously the third region in the plot of the complementary cumulative distribution function vs. an annual household income. Furthermore, the known stylised facts concerning this income are well described by our formula. Namely, the formula provides the Boltzmann Gibbs income distribution function for the low-income society class and the weak Pareto law for the medium-income society class, as expect!
ed. Importantly, it predicts (to satisfactory approximation) the *Zipf* law for the high-income society class. Moreover, the region of medium-income society class is now distinctly reduced because the bottom of high-income society class is distinctly lowered. This reduction made, in fact, the medium-income society class an intermediate-income society class. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
The impact factors (IF) of orthopaedic journals is an important component in determining the future of orthopaedic research funding. We aim to characterise the trend in journal IF over the last decade and draw comparisons with other surgical specialties.
We conducted an analysis of impact factors from Journal Citation Reports between 2000 and 2010.
Between 2000 and 2010 the number of orthopaedic journals increased from 24 to 41, more than any other surgical specialty and the mean IF increased from 0.842 to 1.400. Journals printed in the English language had a significantly higher IF in the year 2010 (1.64 vs. 0.33, p = 0.01) than those printed in other languages. English language journals published in the US had significantly higher mean 2010 IF (1.932 vs. 1.243, p = 0.025) than those published in Europe, and this had changed compared with 2000 mean IF (0.978 Vs. 0.704, p = 0.360). Orthopaedics was ranked sixth out of 11 surgical subspecialties in 2000 but dropped to seventh out of 11 in 2010.
The quality of orthopaedic journals has significantly increased over the last decade and this has been accompanied by a rise in mean IF. It is important that orthopaedics continues to improve the quality of research, which may help orthopaedic researchers secure funding in the future.

Abstract:
Many scholars question the purportedly international character of the most prestigious journals of geography, particularly those concerned with human geography. These, in their opinion, are dominated by British and American geography. The goal of this article is to assess the affiliation distribution of the authors of articles and the editorial boards of selected geographical publications and to compare the results with previous assessments of a similar kind. The analysis pertains to those geographical journals that received the highest impact rating from the Institute for Scientific Information. The results confirm those obtained by previous studies; over 70% of all articles published in highly respected geographical journals were written by authors representing British and American academic institutions. This trend carries over to the structure of the respective publications' editorial boards and staff, also Anglo-American in their majority. It would appear, as is argued, !
that maintaining such a structure creates numerous threats to the development of a global discourse in the area of geography. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
