Abstract:
Background: Knowledge translation is attracting different professional, educational and institutional strategies mainly focused on how new knowledge should be tailored and transferred at bedside. Less attention is dedicated to the antecedent of knowledge translation, which is the availability of the knowledge itself. Knowledge diffusion is a process by which an innovation is communicated through certain channels among members of a social system over time. Publishing in peer review journals is recognised as the main method for knowledge diffusion: nevertheless publication efficiency has received little attention to date.
Objectives: Describing publication efficiency via nursing journals as the time occurring between data collection and manuscript publication was the main aim of the study. The secondary aim was to discover the differences, if any, in publication efficiency within manuscripts reporting results from different study designs.
Design: A retrospective study design was adopted in 2010. Methods: The 2009 *Impact Factor* List of Nursing Journals published by the ISI web of Knowledge in 2010 was obtained. The first top ten IF Nursing Journals available as a full text and for which the overall ISI 5-Year *Impact Factor* was also available, was eligible. The articles published on paper by the selected journals, from 1st January to 31st December 2009, were then included. Commentaries, editorials and book reviews were excluded. For each article included, the following were evaluated: (a) the time occurring between each step of publication, from data collection to article submission, acceptance and publication online and on paper; and (b) the differences in the publication efficiency within articles reporting different study designs.
Results: 1152 articles were included. From the end of data collection to manuscript publication online/on paper it takes an average of 981 days [CI95% 929-1032] (2.5-3 years). Meta-analysis and systematic reviews have demonstrated the fastest process, requiring an average 1.3 years and 1.9 years respectively. Case-control, cohort and quasi-experimental studies have required more time to enjoy publication in nursing journals, 4 years, 3.5 years and 3.2 years respectively.
Conclusions: The production time of an article from its data collection involves significant processes and skills. However, the time may also be lengthened by factors not related to the processes of research, such as the time available to researchers. The scientific world needs to reflect on publication efficiency because lateness can potentially have a negative impact on patients and on further research. In the future, the same emphasis given to the evaluation of knowledge translation effectiveness should be given also to the complex process of knowledge diffusion, discovering facilitators and barriers. Abstract:
There are several ways for the international scientific community to recognize the quality of a scholarly journal. Although controversial, the most widely used and reliable methodology. to identify the importance of a journal is through the citation it receives. This paper identifies the performance of scholarly journals published by Malaysian publishers in the Web of Science and reports the number of citations to Malaysian journals in terms of the cited and the citing journals. A search using the Thomson-Reuters citation database (Web of Science) was performed to identify highly cited Malaysian journals from 2006 to 2010. We identified 212 cited journals that received 9675 cited-papers, and a total of 9427 articles contributing to the 3184 journals citing Malaysian journals. More than fifty percent of all the articles that cited Malaysian journals were published in journals ranked in the first or second quartile by the journal Citation Report. Further analysis was done on t!
he top 50 cited and citing journal titles. A steady growth of citations with a total increase of 56.9% was evident between the five year period examined. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The impact of SSCI and SCI on Taiwan's academy: an outcry for fair play

Abstract:
The increasing importance of the competition in global university ranking has resulted in a paradigm shift in academic governance in East Asia. Many governments have introduced different strategies for benchmarking their leading universities to facilitate global competitiveness and international visibility. A major trend in the changing university governance is the emergence of a regulatory evaluation scheme for faculty research productivity, reflected by the striking features of the recent changing academic profile of publication norms and forms that go beyond the territories of nation-states in the East and West. With the expansion of the Taiwanese higher education system in the last two decades, the maintenance of quality to meet the requirements for international competitiveness has become a key concern for policy makers. Since 2005, the Ministry of Education has introduced a series of university governance policies to enhance academic excellence in universities and esta!
blished a formal university evaluation policy to improve the competitiveness and international visibility of Taiwanese universities. In so doing, the government has legalized a clear link between evaluation results and public funding allocation. Research performance is assessed in terms of the number of articles published in journals indexed by the Science Citation Index (SCI), the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI), and the Arts and Humanities Citation Index and in terms of citation rates and associated factors. Therefore, evaluation has taken on a highly quantitative dimension. Despite the efforts of concerned parties to encourage academic excellence, the abovementioned quantitative evaluation indicators have resulted in bitter complaints from the humanities and social sciences, whose research accomplishments are devalued and ignored by the current quantitative indicators. In this paper, the authors describe the recent petition for collective action initiated by univers!
ity faculty to protest the privileging of SSCI and SCI publica!
 tions as
critical indicators for academic performance regardless of faculty discipline and specialization. The article concludes its argument with a group petition calling for more diverse and reliable indicators in recognizing the research of different natures and disciplines while creating culturally responsive evaluation criteria for social sciences and humanities in the Taiwanese academe. The article not only sheds light on academic evaluation literature, especially on the uncertain paradox of globalization and market economy, but also proposes alternatives to the evaluation system for humanities and social sciences in higher education.

Abstract:
We propose an indicator to "measure" the extent to which co-publication through international collaboration enhances the value of scientific output of an organisation or agency performing academic research. A second order approach is used which combines a quality proxy (impact) and a quantity or size proxy (number of papers published) to yield a trinity of energy like scalar proxies. From these it is possible to define an index of foreign collaboration and another evenness indicator that shows the size and unevenness of the role foreign collaboration plays in the total academic output of the organization.

Abstract:
The journal *Impact Factor* (IF) is not comparable among fields of science and social science because of systematic differences in publication and citation behaviour across disciplines. In this work, a decomposing of the field aggregate *impact factor* into five normally distributed variables is presented. Considering these factors, a principal component analysis is employed to find the sources of the variance in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) subject categories of science and social science. Although publication and citation behaviour differs largely across disciplines, principal components explain more than 78 % of the total variance and the average number of references per paper is not the primary factor explaining the variance in impact factors across categories. The categories normalized *impact factor* based on the JCR subject category list is proposed and compared with the IF. This normalization is achieved by considering all the indexing categories of each journa!
 l. An empirical application, with one hundred journals in two or more subject categories of economics and business, shows that the gap between rankings is reduced around 32 % in the journals analyzed. This gap is obtained as the maximum distance among the ranking percentiles from all categories where each journal is included.

Abstract:
This paper analyzes the relationship among research collaboration, number of documents and number of citations of computer science research activity. It analyzes the number of documents and citations and how they vary by number of authors. They are also analyzed (according to author set cardinality) under different circumstances, that is, when documents are written in different types of collaboration, when documents are published in different document types, when documents are published in different computer science subdisciplines, and, finally, when documents are published by journals with different *impact factor* quartiles. To investigate the above relationships, this paper analyzes the publications listed in the Web of Science and produced by active Spanish university professors between 2000 and 2009, working in the computer science field. Analyzing all documents, we show that the highest percentage of documents are published by three authors, whereas single-authored doc!
uments account for the lowest percentage. By number of citations, there is no positive association between the author cardinality and citation impact. Statistical tests show that documents written by two authors receive more citations per document and year than documents published by more authors. In contrast, results do not show statistically significant differences between documents published by two authors and one author. The research findings suggest that international collaboration results on average in publications with higher citation rates than national and institutional collaborations. We also find differences regarding citation rates between journals and conferences, across different computer science subdisciplines and journal quartiles as expected. Finally, our impression is that the collaborative level (number of authors per document) will increase in the coming years, and documents published by three or four authors will be the trend in computer science literat!

Abstract:
Context: Although qualitative studies are becoming more appreciated in healthcare, the number of publications of quality studies remains low. Little is known about the frequency and characteristics of citation in qualitative studies.
Objective: To compare the academic impact of qualitative studies to that of two quantitative studies: systematic reviews and randomized controlled trials.
Methods: Publications in BMJ between 1997 and 2006 (BMJ's median *impact factor* was 7.04 during this period) employing qualitative methods were matched to two quantitative studies appearing the same year using PubMed. Using Web of Science, citations within a 24-month publication period were determined. Additionally, three hypotheses were examined: qualitative studies are 1) infrequently cited in original articles or reviews; 2) rarely cited by authors in non-English-speaking countries; and 3) more frequently cited in non-medical disciplines (e. g., psychology or sociology).
Results: A total of 121 qualitative studies, 270 systematic reviews, and 515 randomised controlled trials were retrieved. Qualitative studies were cited a total of 1,089 times, with a median of 7.00 times (range, 0-34) for each study. Matched systematic reviews and randomized controlled trials were cited 2,411times and 1,600 times, respectively. With respect to citing documents, original articles and reviews exceeded 60% for each study design. Relative to quantitative studies, qualitative studies were cited more often by authors in English-speaking countries. With respect to subject area, medical disciplines were more frequently cited than non-medical disciplines for all three study designs (>80%).
Conclusion: The median number of citations for qualitative studies was almost the same as the median of BMJ's *impact factor* during the survey period. For a suitable evaluation of qualitative studies in healthcare, it will be necessary to develop a reporting framework and include explicit discussions of clinical implications when reporting findings. Coordination between researchers and editors will be needed to achieve this goal.

Abstract:
The Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database of Thomson Reuters is widely used to evaluate and identify important, high-impact papers, but few researches have looked at attributes of the ESI database. Using the category of "chemical engineering" as an example, characteristics of the ESI database were described, and distributions of document type, language of the paper, and journal of publication were reported. Five indicators, total number of papers, first-author papers, corresponding-author papers, independent papers, and collaborative papers, were applied to evaluate publications by country, institution, and author. In addition, the number of authors cited, number of institutions cited, number of countries cited, number of subject areas cited, and number of journals cited were also used to evaluate highly-cited ESI papers. Results showed that journals with a higher *impact factor* did not necessarily to have more papers in the ESI. The most highly cited ESI papers had f!
ewer authors, were more likely to be single-country papers, and in general had not yet reached a citation peak, or had an extended citation peak over several years. Self-citation does not appear to be an issue among them. The ESI database only includes papers that were published within the last ten years, and likely excludes some top-cited papers even before their citation peak is reached. We suggest that ESI criteria should be amended to include all papers but only consider citation frequencies within the last ten years.

Abstract:
Purpose - The purpose of this study is to update a global ranking of knowledge management and intellectual capital (KM/IC) academic journals.
Design/methodology/approach - Two different approaches were utilized: a survey of 379 active KM/IC researchers; and the journal citation impact method. Scores produced by the application of these methods were combined to develop the final ranking.
Findings - Twenty-five KM/IC-centric journals were identified and ranked. The top six journals are: Journal of Knowledge Management, Journal of Intellectual Capital, The Learning Organization, Knowledge Management Research & Practice, Knowledge and Process Management and International Journal of Knowledge Management. Knowledge Management Research & Practice has substantially improved its reputation. The Learning Organization and Journal of Intellectual Capital retained their previous positions due to their strong citation impact The number of KM/IC-centric and KM/IC-relevant journals has been growing at the pace of one new journal launch per year. This demonstrates that KM/IC is not a scientific fad; instead, the discipline is progressing towards academic maturity and recognition.
Practical implications - The developed ranking may be used by various stakeholders, including journal editors, publishers, reviewers, researchers, new scholars, students, policymakers, university administrators, librarians and practitioners. It is a useful tool to further promote the KM/IC discipline and develop its unique identity It is important for all KM/IC journals to become included in Thomson Reuters' Journal Citation Reports.
Originality/value - This is the most up-to-date ranking of KM/IC journals.

Abstract:
Objective. - The amplification bias in the process of citing an article consists of exaggerating the results of a published study. This study seeks to identify the presence of amplification bias in the citation of a systematic review of the literature on the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy of psychotic symptoms. Indeed, if the amplification bias is well known in the world of industry. There is little study in the field of psychotherapy.
Method. - The search of articles citing a meta-analysis was performed on ISI Web of Knowledge (c) from April 2005 to February 2012. The citations were transcribed and evaluated independently by three judges based on a rating scale developed for the occasion.
Results. - The research led to the identification of 90 citations, 81 in English, five in German, two in French, one in Italian and one in Spanish. Inter-rater agreements between the three judges who assessed the citations measured with kappa are above 0.81. Amplification bias is observed for 11 % of the citations.
Discussion. - The bias of amplification obtained in this study is low and confirms the results of a recent study. It is true that the field of cognitive behavioral therapy of psychotic symptoms is free of commercial conflicts of interest. However, it is not protected through allegiance to the therapeutic model. The peer review seems to have a protective effect on the bias of citation in the studied area. (C) 2013 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
The present article analyzes the relationship between characteristics of the journal Neotropical Ichthyology and its impact factor (IF) between 2006 and 2011 using bibliometric descriptive quantitative methods. To perform this analysis, two samples of journals included in Journal Citation Reports (JCR) were studied. One sample was composed of journals classified within the subject of zoology, and the other contained journals from different areas published in Brazil. The instrument used for data collection was a database created in Microsoft Excel 2007 and the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 18. The results show that despite its short history, Neotropical Ichthyology has exhibited a distinctive impact, as manifested in a significant progression in the IF of this journal in the field of zoology during the investigated period.

Abstract:
The future of scientific journals in Latin America is uncertain. The inability to calculate bibliometric indicators to classify and homologate journals according to globally-used quartiles reduces journal visibility. For instance, Colombian journals classified in the National Bibliographic Database Publindex (BBNP) under categories A1, A2, B and C, have low rates of indexing in international databases, such as Web of Science or Scopus, thus limiting the estimation of bibliometric indicators for comparison at an international level. In this case study, articles published between 2003 and 2007 were taken from 211 journals selected from the BBNP-2008. Using Google Scholar, Publish or Perish software and the Scopus database, impact and productivity indicators were quantified and compared creating a regional ranking (Q1-Q4). They were subsequently homologated internationally with the Scimago Journal Ranking (SJR). The h index proved the best indicator to generate the ranking of 1!
70 Colombian journals based on quartiles (Q1-Q4) able to be homologated with SJR quartiles. We propose this methodology for classifying and homologating Latin American journals that are not indexed internationally, as a useful tool for publishers, publishing houses, information agencies and public policy decision-makers concerning education, science and technology, both regionally and globally.

Abstract:
By examining scientific journals, this paper attempts an analysis of how scientific articles are evaluated. The quality of a piece of science is not solely a function of the number of references it boasts or a given journal's reputation. There are other qualitative aspects that confer quality to a text, not the least of which is content. By means of a qualitative analysis of texts, the author offers a socio-hermeneutic approach to the evaluation of a scientific writing, in order to posit guidelines for solving correction problems.
