Abstract:
The notion of complex-valued information entropy measure is presented. It applies in particular to directed networks (digraphs). The corresponding statistical physics notions are outlined. The studied network, serving as a case study, in view of illustrating the discussion, concerns citations by agents belonging to two distinct communities which have markedly different opinions: the Neocreationist and Intelligent Design Proponents, on one hand, and the Darwinian Evolution Defenders, on the other hand. The whole, intra-and inter-community adjacency matrices, resulting from quotations of published work by the community agents, are elaborated and eigenvalues calculated. Since eigenvalues can be complex numbers, the information entropy may become also complex-valued. It is calculated for the illustrating case. The role of the imaginary part finiteness is discussed in particular and given some physical sense interpretation through local interaction range consideration. It is conc!
luded that such generalizations are not only interesting and necessary for discussing directed networks, but also may give new insight into conceptual ideas about directed or other networks. Notes on extending the above to Tsallis entropy measure are found in an Appendix.

Abstract:
This article analyzes the reception of Ettore Majorana's articles by tracing all the references made to them since the beginning of the 1930s. This methodology allows me to show that Ettore Majorana's 1937 piece on spin-1/2 particles was largely rediscovered during the 1960s, but also to identify the people who actively promoted Majorana's work, which has loomed larger in scientific debates since the 1970s. Analyzing co-citations, this article shows the conceptual network in which Majorana's work fits.

Abstract:
This paper examines the bibliometric impact of JASSS on other ISI- and Scopus-indexed sources by examining inward and outward citations and their inter-relation. Given the prestige of JASSS, this analysis can measure the growth and dynamics of social simulation and give us an indication of the direction in which social simulation is moving. Results show that the impact of JASSS is higher in computer sciences, physics and ecology than it is in the social sciences, even though JASSS-indexed articles tend to be more concerned with social science-related topics. Looking at inter-journal citations revealed an interesting citation structure: JASSS collected its largest percentage of citations from non-social science-focused journals while directing more citations within its own articles toward works published in social science journals. On the one hand, this would confirm that social simulation is not yet recognised in the social science mainstream. On the other hand, this may ind!
icate that the cross-disciplinary nature of JASSS allows it to promulgate social science theories and findings in other distant communities.

Abstract:
Standard bibliometric indices were re-defined using a generalized concept of "successful paper". A family-tree based upon the new definitions provides new insights into the relationships between the standard indices, and empty boxes in the family-tree may inspire design of new indices. Abstract:
In the last decade, the main Brazilian research funding agencies, CNPq and CAPES, have introduced gender projects aimed to understand the situation of women in general and in science in particular. These projects have led to an increased awareness of the problem. There is still a long way to go in the quest for equal access to opportunities and resources. This paper compares the production and quality of work of female scientists with their male colleagues in the physics and astronomy grant-funded research community in Brazil.

Abstract:
The SNIP (source normalized impact per paper) indicator is an indicator of the citation impact of scientific journals. The indicator, introduced by Henk Moed in 2010, is included in Elsevier's Scopus database. The SNIP indicator uses a source normalized approach to correct for differences in citation practices between scientific fields. The strength of this approach is that it does not require a field classification system in which the boundaries of fields are explicitly defined.
In this paper, a number of modifications that were recently made to the SNIP indicator are explained, and the advantages of the resulting revised SNIP indicator are pointed out. It is argued that the original SNIP indicator has some counterintuitive properties, and it is shown mathematically that the revised SNIP indicator does not have these properties. Empirically, the differences between the original SNIP indicator and the revised one turn out to be relatively small, although some systematic differences can be observed. Relations with other source normalized indicators proposed in the literature are discussed as well. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
In this paper we provide the reader with a visual representation of relationships among the impact of book chapters indexed in the Book Citation Index using information gain values and published by different academic publishers in specific disciplines. The impact of book chapters can be characterized statistically by citations histograms. For instance, we can compute the probability of occurrence of book chapters with a number of citations in different intervals for each academic publisher. We predict the similarity between two citation histograms based on the amount of relative information between such characterizations. We observe that the citation patterns of book chapters follow a Lotkaian distribution. This paper describes the structure of the Book Citation Index using 'heliocentric clockwise maps' which allow the reader not only to determine the grade of similarity of a given academic publisher indexed in the Book Citation Index with a specific discipline according to !
their citation distribution, but also to easily observe the general structure of a discipline, identifying the publishers with higher impact and output. (c) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
Evaluative bibliometrics is concerned with comparing research units by using statistical procedures. According to Williams (2012) an empirical study should be concerned with the substantive and practical significance of the findings as well as the sign and statistical significance of effects. In this study we will explain what adjusted predictions and marginal effects are and how useful they are for institutional evaluative bibliometrics. As an illustration, we will calculate a regression model using publications (and citation data) produced by four universities in German-speaking countries from 1980 to 2010. We will show how these predictions and effects can be estimated and plotted, and how this makes it far easier to get a practical feel for the substantive meaning of results in evaluative bibliometric studies. An added benefit of this approach is that it makes it far easier to explain results obtained via sophisticated statistical techniques to a broader and sometimes no!
n-technical audience. We will focus particularly on Average Adjusted Predictions (AAPs), Average Marginal Effects (AMEs), Adjusted Predictions at Representative Values (APRVs) and Marginal Effects at Representative Values (MERVs). (c) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to analyse and describe the topological properties of the institutional and national collaboration network from the profiles extracted from Google Scholar Citations (GSC). 19,912 unique profiles with "co-authors" were obtained from a web crawl performed in March 2012. Several statistical and network analysis techniques were used to map and analyse these collaboration relationships at the country and institution level. Results show that The United States dominates the world scientific map and that every research institution is grouped by national, geographical and cultural criteria. A clustering phenomenon based on the self-similarity and fractal properties of scale-free networks is also observed. We conclude that GSC is a suitable tool for collaboration studies only at macro level between countries and institutions. (c) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
Academic productivity and research funding have been hot topics in biomedical research. While publications and their citations are popular indicators of academic productivity, there has been no rigorous way to quantify co-authors' relative contributions. This has seriously compromised quantitative studies on the relationship between academic productivity and research funding. Here we apply an axiomatic approach and associated bibliometric measures to revisit a recent study by Ginther et al. (Ginther et al., 2011a,b) in which the probability of receiving a U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) R01 award was analyzed with respect to the applicant's race/ethnicity. Our results provide new insight and suggest that there is no significant racial bias in the NIH review process, in contrast to the conclusion from the study by D. K. Ginther et al. Our axiomatic approach has a potential to be widely used for scientific assessment and management. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights r!

Abstract:
Since its introduction, the Journal Impact Factor has probably been the most extensively adopted bibliometric indicator. Notwithstanding its well-known strengths and limits, it is still widely misused as a tool for evaluation, well beyond the purposes it was intended for. In order to shed further light on its nature, the present work studies how the correlation between the Journal Impact Factor and the (time-weighed) article Mean Received Citations (intended as a measure of journal performance) has evolved through time. It focuses on a sample of hard sciences and social sciences journals from the 1999 to 2010 time period. Correlation coefficients (Pearson's Coefficients as well as Spearman's Coefficients and Kendall's tau(alpha)) are calculated and then tested against several null hypotheses. The results show that in most cases Journal Impact Factors and their yearly variations do not display a strong correlation with citedness. Differences also exist among scientific areas.!

Abstract:
The data of F1000 and InCites provide us with the unique opportunity to investigate the relationship between peers' ratings and bibliometric metrics on a broad and comprehensive data set with high-quality ratings. F1000 is a post-publication peer review system of the biomedical literature. The comparison of metrics with peer evaluation has been widely acknowledged as a way of validating metrics. Based on the seven indicators offered by InCites, we analyzed the validity of raw citation counts (Times Cited, 2nd Generation Citations, and 2nd Generation Citations per Citing Document), normalized indicators (journal Actual/Expected Citations, Category Actual/Expected Citations, and Percentile in Subject Area), and a journal based indicator (Journal Impact Factor). The data set consists of 125 papers published in 2008 and belonging to the subject category cell biology or immunology. As the results show, Percentile in Subject Area achieves the highest correlation with F1000 ratings!
; we can assert that for further three other indicators (Times Cited, 2nd Generation Citations, and Category Actual/Expected Citations) the "true" correlation with the ratings reaches at least a medium effect size. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
Sustainability Science has been widely accepted as an important research field all over the world. However, Sustainability Science is widespread to many research field such as Environment Science and Engineering, Architecture, Material Sciences, Civil Engineering, etc., therefore, it is important to discover hidden connections between sustainability science and other technologies. At the same time, with increasingly strong determination towards sustainable society, the tools for supporting discovering the linkage between technologies are necessary. This paper investigates the relationships between Sustainability Science and Complex Networks based on the citation network analysis. First, citation networks are generated based on academic paper datasets, and conducted the clustering for understanding the research fields to the Sustainability Science and other technologies. Next, we measure the textual similarities between clusters in Sustainability Science and Complex Networks.!
After that, we find the middle layer research area for connecting Complex Networks and Sustainability Science using analysis of the shared terms. These results could offer overviews of how Complex Networks contributes to the sustainability science, and assist in forming policies to promote key technologies towards the future of sustainable society.

Abstract:
Objective: To compare two premier Pakistani medical journals for errors in references of original articles published in the year 2008.
Methods: All original articles of the Journal of Pakistan Medical Association and the Journal of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan published in 2008 were included in the study. References pertaining to journals were included in the study, whereas references pertaining to other sources such as books, internet articles, websites and newspapers were excluded. Errors were categorised into author error, article title error, journal title error, year of publication error, volume error and page number error. The data was analysed through SPSS 16.0.
Results: References from 200 original articles (100 each from both journals) were evaluated. Only 19 (9.5%) articles were found to be free of error with no significant difference between the two journals. On evaluation of 3783 references, the overall reference error was found to be 1015 (26.8%): 531 (31%) in JPMA and 484 (23.4%) in JCPSP. The author error was the commonest error among these references (n=490; 13%), followed by page error (n=297; 7.9%), article title error (n=222; 5.9%), and journal title error (n=189; 5%). JCPSP had statistically significant more article errors, whereas JPMA had statistically significant more journal title and page errors.
Conclusion: Reference errors constitute an avoidable but substantial lapse of medical literature. The magnitude of reference errors is much higher than expected.

Abstract:
High-speed flow research has been sponsored and performed at differing levels of effort since the late 1800s. For example, hypersonic research has experienced numerous cycles since the 1950s, with various periods of high research activity, followed by equally long periods of very low activity. This lack of continuity in high-speed flow research has led to a situation where researchers of one "generation" often do not know what the researchers of previous "generations" have done, mainly due to large losses of institutional knowledge in government, industry, and academic organizations. Therefore, a chronically weak area in research papers, reports, and reviews is the complete identification of critical background documents that form the building blocks and intellectual heritage for modern compressible flow research. A method for systematically determining these critical references is presented in the context of its application to high-speed flow using Citation-Assisted Backgro!
und, which is based on the assumption that many critical documents tend to be highly cited within the literature, although not necessarily recently. While Citation-Assisted Background is a highly systematic approach for identifying critical references, it is not a substitute for the judgement of the researchers, but rather complements their expertise. In this critical review of high-speed compressible flow, important documents have been identified using Citation-Assisted Background, but other documents have been added by the authors to enhance the picture provided by the highly-cited documents. Abstract:
The future of scientific journals in Latin America is uncertain. The inability to calculate bibliometric indicators to classify and homologate journals according to globally-used quartiles reduces journal visibility. For instance, Colombian journals classified in the National *Bibliographic* Database Publindex (BBNP) under categories A1, A2, B and C, have low rates of indexing in international databases, such as Web of Science or Scopus, thus limiting the estimation of bibliometric indicators for comparison at an international level. In this case study, articles published between 2003 and 2007 were taken from 211 journals selected from the BBNP-2008. Using Google Scholar, Publish or Perish software and the Scopus database, impact and productivity indicators were quantified and compared creating a regional ranking (Q1-Q4). They were subsequently homologated internationally with the Scimago Journal Ranking (SJR). The h index proved the best indicator to generate the ranking of!
170 Colombian journals based on quartiles (Q1-Q4) able to be homologated with SJR quartiles. We propose this methodology for classifying and homologating Latin American journals that are not indexed internationally, as a useful tool for publishers, publishing houses, information agencies and public policy decision-makers concerning education, science and technology, both regionally and globally.
