Abstract:
Metrics of success or impact in academia may do more harm than good. To explore the value of citations, the reported efficacy of treatments in ecology and evolution from close to 1,500 publications was examined. If citation behavior is rationale, i.e. studies that successfully applied a treatment and detected greater biological effects are cited more frequently, then we predict that larger effect sizes increases study relative citation rates. This prediction was not supported. Citations are likely thus a poor proxy for the quantitative merit of a given treatment in ecology and evolutionary biology-unlike evidence-based medicine wherein the success of a drug or treatment on human health is one of the critical attributes. Impact factor of the journal is a broader metric, as one would expect, but it also unrelated to the mean effect sizes for the respective populations of publications. The interpretation by the authors of the treatment effects within each study differed dependi!
ng on whether the hypothesis was supported or rejected. Significantly larger effect sizes were associated with rejection of a hypothesis. This suggests that only the most rigorous studies reporting negative results are published or that authors set a higher burden of proof in rejecting a hypothesis. The former is likely true to a major extent since only 29 % of the studies rejected the hypotheses tested. These findings indicate that the use of citations to identify important papers in this specific discipline-at least in terms of designing a new experiment or contrasting treatments-is of limited value.

Abstract:
The definition assigned to self-citations is nontrivial. This decision can affect research outputs in a number of ways. The current paper considers the self-citation definition used by the Web of Science, and compares this with an alternative definition, advanced in the present study, within the context of the work of an individual researcher. A discussion follows.

Abstract:
Based on the concept that scientific research is an important component of a country's knowledge-based economy, this study aims to answer the question "Are CIVETS the next BRICs" by comparing a series of scientometrics indicators using data from the Essential Science Indicators database and the World Bank Report 2009. The main findings are that at the country group level, there is no significant difference between CIVETS and BRICs in knowledge-based economy performance, scientific research quality and scientific research structure and that the number of scientific research papers is the clear gap between them. The results may be of use to find the answer to the question "Are CIVETS the next BRICs" at least from the perspective of scientometrics.

Abstract:
This article examines the extent to which specific features of interdisciplinary research are accurately reflected in selected bibliometric measures of scholarly publications over time. To test the validity of these measures, we compare knowledge of research processes and impact based on ethnographic studies of a well-established researcher's laboratory, together with personal interview data, against bibliometric indicators of cognitive integration, diffusion, and impact represented in the entire portfolio of papers produced by this researcher over time.

Abstract:
Purpose: To provide up-to-date bibliometric reference data describing the output and success of psychology researchers in the German-speaking countries, including lifetime publication and citation numbers, and to investigate associations of bibliometric measures with academic status and gender as well as the department characteristics of size and quota of senior researchers. Method Queried literature databases using an extensive online register of academic psychologists in the German-speaking countries, obtaining valid data for 85 % (N = 1742) of the population of interest. Findings Skewed distributions for publications and citations; maximum number of German-language (=native) publications much higher than maximum number of English-language publications; relatively large part of population publishing almost exclusively in German; publication count predictable by academic status, gender, department size, and quota of senior researchers; citation count predictable by publicat!
ion count, status, department size, and quota of senior researchers; department characteristics interact with individual characteristics to produce specific conditions under which publication count and citation count are higher or lower than expected: combination of female gender, small department size and large quota of senior researchers is associated with particularly increased publication count; female gender and large department size are associated with decreased publication count; high publication count, large department size and low quota of senior researchers are associated with increased citation count; low publication count and large quota of senior researchers are associated with decreased citation count. Conclusions Reference values for scientific output provided in this study provide an anchor for monitoring and international comparison; despite considerable noise in data, we show that interactions of individual and organizational characteristics are relevant f!
or scientific success and should be investigated further, e.g.!
  by adop
ting various measures of organizational diversity and tracing a population longitudinally.

Abstract:
Since machine-readable documents have become widespread, some recent studies have proposed retrieval methods using a combination of citation linkage and its context. In the case of co-citation linkage, there have been attempts to discern 'strong' co-citations from 'weak' ones by examining the positions of citations in a document. However, this promising concept has not yet been sufficiently evaluated, and it remains unclear whether search performance is significantly improved. Therefore, this paper explores the effects of using co-citation context more deeply and more widely by comparing the search performance of six retrieval methods, which differ as to whether co-citation context and normalization using cited frequency are used. For empirically evaluating the effects, a special test collection was created from CiteSeer Metadata, and the search performances of the six retrieval methods were compared by two IR metrics (AP and nDCG). The main conclusions of this paper are: (1!
) co-citation context has a positive effect on co-citation searching; (2) the normalization technique using cited frequency is useful for context-based co-citation searching; (3) approaches of using co-citation context tend to affect the characteristics of search performance.

Abstract:
How scientific progress functions in detail and what the specific prerequisites for scientific breakthroughs in a given research area are, is still unclear today. According to philosopher of science Thomas S. Kuhn, scientific advancement takes place via paradigm shift. As a principle supplementing Kuhn's theory, we proposed the Anna Karenina principle: a new paradigm can be successful only when several key prerequisites are fulfilled (e.g., verified by means of independent data and methods). If any one of these prerequisites is not fulfilled, the paradigm will not be successful. Aiming at investigating the schema of paradigm shift supplemented by the Anna Karenina principle with the aid of concrete examples from science, in this study we analyze one of the most important scientific revolutions: the shift from a fixed to a mobile worldview in geoscientific thinking. This paradigm shift will be explained based on key papers that played a decisive role, selected carefully from !
reviews in the literature. The account of the development will be complemented by empirical findings that were produced based on publication and citation data using the software Histcite.

Abstract:
In this paper, I analyze the 'best paper' prizes given by economics and finance journals to the best article published in their journal in a given year. More specifically, I compare the citations received by best paper prize-winning papers to citations received by papers that are awarded runner up prizes and to citations received by non-winning papers. In this way, I evaluate to what extent evaluation outcomes based on peer review correspond to evaluation outcomes based on citation counts. The data show that the paper that gets the 'best paper' prize, is rarely the most cited paper; is, in a small majority of cases, cited more than the runner up papers and is, in most cases, cited more than the median paper. I also explore whether characteristics of the prizes or the papers correlate with this difference in outcomes between peer review and citation counts and find there is no easy way to reduce the difference in outcomes between these two evaluation methods (C) 2012 Elsevier!

Abstract:
Science is principally driven by the efforts of a vanishingly small fraction of researchers publishing the majority of scientific research and garnering the majority of citations. Despite this well-established trend, knowledge of exactly how many articles these researchers publish, how highly they are cited, and how they achieved their distinctive accomplishments is meager. This article examines the publication and citation patterns of the world's most highly cited environmental scientists and ecologists, inquiring into their levels of scientific productivity and visibility, examining relationships between scientific productivity and quality within their research programs, and considering how different publication strategies contribute to these distinctive successes. Generally speaking, highly cited researchers are also highly productive, publishing on average well over 100 articles each. Furthermore, articles published by this group are more highly cited on average than art!
icles published in premier generalist journal like Nature and Science, and their citation to publication ratios are more equitably distributed than is typical. Research specialization and primacy of authorship are important determinants of citation frequency, while geographic differences and collaborative propensity matter less. The article closes with a set of suggestions for those wishing to increase the use of their research by the scientific community.

Abstract:
Negative results are commonly assumed to attract fewer readers and citations, which would explain why journals in most disciplines tend to publish too many positive and statistically significant findings. This study verified this assumption by counting the citation frequencies of papers that, having declared to "test" a hypothesis, reported a "positive" (full or partial) or a "negative" (null or negative) support. Controlling for various confounders, positive results were cited on average 32 % more often. The citation advantage, however, was unequally distributed across disciplines (classified as in the Essential Science Indicators database). Using Space Science as the reference category, the citation differential was positive and formally statistically significant only in Neuroscience & Behaviour, Molecular Biology & Genetics, Clinical Medicine, and Plant and Animal Science. Overall, the effect was significantly higher amongst applied disciplines, and in the biological comp!
ared to the physical and the social sciences. The citation differential was not a significant predictor of the actual frequency of positive results amongst the 20 broad disciplines considered. Although future studies should attempt more fine-grained assessments, these results suggest that publication bias may have different causes and require different solutions depending on the field considered.

Abstract:
Ozcakar L, Franchignoni F, Negrini S, Frontera W: Writing a case report for the American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and the European Journal of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine. Am J Phys Med Rehabil 2013; 92: 183-186.
Case reports (CRs) have led to the description and discovery of new diseases, syndromes, therapeutic complications or side effects, and previously unknown potential benefits of pharmacologic agents. CRs may also be used as an effective training strategy for novice authors to develop the skills needed for medical writing. However, too often, CRs do not follow standards for excellence in scientific writing. Therefore, in this article, the American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and the European Journal of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine collaborate with the purpose of providing guidance to authors in selecting CRs that might be appropriate for publication. In addition, the authors discuss different aspects of the preparation of a well written CR in accordance with the mission and editorial views of both journals.

Abstract:
This study was conducted to explore a bibliometric approach to quantitatively assess current research trends in cisplatin-containing chemotherapy for small cell lung cancer (SCLC), using related literature in the Science Citation Index Expanded database from 1992 to 2011. Articles were analyzed by the scientific output and research performances of countries and institutions. The distribution of key words in the article title and author-selected keywords were used to evaluate research trends. It was observed that the number of articles devoted to cisplatin-containing chemotherapy for SCLC did not increase with time. The USA and Japan were the top two countries with the highest number of articles devoted to cisplatin-containing chemotherapy for SCLC. In both countries, the number of articles did not increase with time, and a decreasing trend was identified in the USA over the last 10 years. This study demonstrates trends in cisplatin-containing chemotherapy for SCLC. The clini!
cal application of novel drugs is required for successful SCLC treatment.

Abstract:
The photon impact factor for the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov pomeron is calculated in the next-to-leading order approximation using the operator expansion in Wilson lines. The result is represented as a next-to-leading order k(T)-factorization formula for the structure functions of small-x deep inelastic scattering. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevD.87.014013

Abstract:
Articles including multicultural content published in the Journal of Counseling Psychology (JCP), from 1954 to 2009, were examined for themes. Multicultural content in this study was broadly defined to include the following identities: race/ethnicity, gender/sex, religion/spirituality, sexual orientation, social status, disability, age, and intersections. Inclusion of articles focused on each of these identity domains was reported by decade. Gender/sex was the most prevalent multicultural identity found in the JCP, followed by race/ethnicity. The most common themes for multicultural articles, in order, were counseling process, vocation/career, and psychological processes/interventions. Academic achievement, discrimination/minority stress, and research methodology were the other common themes that were found across multicultural research. Implications of these findings are discussed.

Abstract:
The reading response journal has been valued as an effective tool for involving students in authentic reading and writing activities. As the internet has become an essential medium in today's English classroom, it is advisable to integrate both the web and the journal when approaching our EFL students. In order to motivate and engage my low-achieving students, I implemented a reading response electronic journal in my freshman English course. This article presents the rationale behind the use of a reading response e-journal in language learning and the context of my instruction. Data collection focused on the participating students' journal entries and their perceptions of their reading and journal-writing experiences. Findings obtained from data analysis show that my goals for the course design were generally achieved, and that more attempts of such an implementation in EFL classrooms should be endeavored in the future.

Abstract:
This article presents a numerical investigation and some experimental results supporting evidence on the flow structure and the pressure distribution in a hydrostatic journal bearing with six equidistant pockets. The parametric studies are of both operational and geometric nature. The operational ones include shaft's angular speed and inlet pressure. The geometric ones include pocket depth, eccentricity, clearance and restrictor diameter. The latter two are instrumental in changing the ratio of the restrictor to clearance hydraulic resistance (R). The flow regime in the bearing is kept in the laminar range (Rebrg < 60). It was found that for the deep pocket the pressure is uniformly distributed across its circumferential length, whereas for the shallow pocket it increases in a ramp fashion along the direction of rotation. The oil injected through the restrictor forms a penetrating jet that constitutes the driver of the upstream and downstream vortical cells that eventually i!
nteract with the Couette effect generated by the rotating shaft. This latter effect deforms both the upstream and downstream vortical cells, causing the downstream one to elongate and occupy a large portion of the pocket center. A direct consequence is the formation of a central vortical cell located at the mouth of the restrictor. It has become evident that the flow in the restrictor has to be modeled when simulating the flow in the pockets, because it represents an influential boundary condition that significantly alters the structure of the flow in the pocket itself. A novel modeling feature is the introduction of large sink-type reservoirs upstream of the restrictors. This allows prescription of the same pressure at the inlet of these sinks, thus simulating a common and constant pressure manifold for all restrictors. For high speeds of rotation the pressure on the lands between the pockets is dominated by hydrodynamic effects, which cause pressures higher than the hydro!
static pressure in the convergent zone. This situation has imp!
 ortant c
onsequences on the overall flow structure in pockets adjacent to these large hydrodynamic pressures, as the flow may be completely shut off at the circumferential and partially at the axial exits of the pocket. The change in the resistance R is associated with the change in the hydrodynamic to hydrostatic pressure component dominance in the bearing. Some validating qualitative experimental results concerning the numerical simulation of the flow in the pockets and associated feed mass flows are also presented.

Abstract:
Research on management with regard to religion became a growing field of interest in the last decades. Nevertheless, the impact of religion on actor's economic behavior is also an old research topic, as the writings of Max Weber (The protestant ethic and the spirit of capitalism, Allen and Unwin, London, 1930) underline. The purpose of this contribution is to highlight the developments of this topic and to guide scholars to identify possible gaps. The structuring and investigation on this topic will help us to advance and better understand past research, while leading to some further reflections. We conduct a citation analysis of 215 articles and 7,968 cited references to examine the citation structure and make out the most-influential publications that have shaped research most so far. On the basis of the analysis it is to be assumed that three research streams affect progress: Best practices regarding performance issues, religion at work as well as religion, and personal e!
thics. Finally, the publications that each topic-clusters contains are reflected and discussed to achieve a structural overview of the state of the art of research.

Abstract:
Australia was an active member of the Colombo Plan for aid to South and Southeast Asia, beginning in 1951 as a loosely organized umbrella of multiple bilateral aid agreements between Commonwealth countries and quickly expanding in geographical reach and membership. Towards the end of the 1950s, as members of this 'plan' geared up for a new wave of aid projects, they also attached new importance to information activities associated with aid. In this Australian case study, journalists were thrust to the fore of story-generation relating to Australia's involvement in the Colombo Plan. These written stories, and also still and moving images, were aimed at both domestic Australian audiences and also overseas audiences. Thus began some of the first important steps in what today is called 'public diplomacy', and what, at the time, was a new experiment in foreign policy and reputation-making.

Abstract:
Disease biomarkers are defined to diagnose various phases of diseases, monitor severities of diseases and responses to therapies, or predict prognosis of patients. Disease-specific biomarkers should benefit drug discovery and development, integrate multidisciplinary sciences, be validated by molecular imaging. The opportunities and challenges in biomarker development are emphasized and considered. The Journal of Translational Medicine opens a new Section of Disease Biomarkers to bridge identification and validation of gene or protein-based biomarkers, network biomarkers, dynamic network biomarkers in human diseases, patient phenotypes, and clinical applications. Disease biomarkers are also important for determining drug effects, target specificities and binding, dynamic metabolism and pharmacological kinetics, or toxicity profiles.

Abstract:
This paper evaluates the factors on which depends the appearance in literature of the articles that treats the survey interviewer characteristics topic. For this purpose we do a bibliometric analysis. Our research is based on 234 articles which were published during 1949-2010, which approaches the topic of the survey interviewer characteristics and which can be find in the online articles databases. We aim to estimate the association of factors that can influence the appearance of an article on this topic in prestigious journals and to evaluate the influence of those factors. In the data analysis we used data association analysis and logit regression model. Data were processed in the statistical programs R. The results of statistical analyses have shown that, for the analyzed articles, the time period when the articles had been elaborated and the geographical area where the author is from are factors influencing the publication of the studied articles in a prestigious journa!

Abstract:
A thorough search of the literature to find the best evidence is central to the practice of evidence-based veterinary medicine. This requires knowing which databases to search to maximize journal coverage. The aim of the present study was to compare the coverage of active veterinary journals by nine bibliographic databases to inform future systematic reviews and other evidence-based searches. Coverage was assessed using lists of included journals produced by the database providers. For 121 active veterinary journals in the "Basic List of Veterinary Medical Serials, Third Edition," the percentage coverage was the highest for Scopus (98.3%) and CAB Abstracts (97.5%). For an extensive list of 1,139 journals with significant veterinary content compiled from a variety of sources, coverage was much greater in CAB Abstracts (90.2%) than in any other database, the next highest coverage being in Scopus (58.3%). The maximum coverage of the extensive journal list that could be obtained!
in a search without including CAB Abstracts was 69.8%. It was concluded that to maximize journal coverage and avoid missing potentially relevant evidence, CAB Abstracts should be included in any veterinary literature search.

Abstract:
Objective: To perform a bibliometric analysis of theses and dissertations on prematurity in the Capes database from 1987 to 2009.
Methods: This is a descriptive study that used the bibliometric approach for the production of indicators of scientific production. Operationally, the methodology was developed in four steps: 1) construction of the theoretical framework; 2) data collection sourced from the abstracts of theses and dissertations available in the Capes Thesis Database which presented the issue of prematurity in the period 1987 to 2009; 3) organization, processing and construction of bibliometric indicators; 4) analysis and interpretation of results.
Results: Increase in the scientific literature on prematurity during the period 1987 to 2009; production is represented mostly by dissertations; the institution that received prominence was the Universidade de Sao Paulo. The studies are directed toward the low birth weight and very low birth weight preterm newborn, encompassing the social, biological and multifactorial causes of prematurity.
Conclusions: There is a qualified, diverse and substantial scientific literature on prematurity developed in various graduate programs of higher education institutions in Brazil. J Pediatr (Rio J). 2012;88(6):479-82.

Abstract:
The aim of the study is to test a methodology to investigate the correlation between the models of electronic information usage and the scientific communication preferences reflected in two databases: Web of Science (WoS) from Thomson Reuters, and Scopus from Elsevier. The study is focused on the University of Vigo. Downloads of the articles distributed by ScienceDirect, SpringerLink and Wiley were analyzed at the University of Vigo (Spain) in the period 2006 to 2011. There is an ascending curve for the consumption of electronic scientific content and a preference for titles distributed by ScienceDirect. The study confirms that experimental and health sciences researchers are the most devoted users, to judge by the number of articles downloaded. Increase in scientific production was also analyzed by discipline. There was a direct correlation between the most productive disciplines and those in which higher numbers of journal articles were downloaded. Nevertheless, no direct !
correlation was observed between the titles preferred for scientific communication and the titles receiving greater use in the multidisciplinary platforms studied.

Abstract:
The Union of South American Nations (Unasur) can be considered as a new emergent region in the world. By using advanced bibliometric methods, the development of science and technology in Unasur is explored. Based on data from the InCites tool of Thomson Reuters, which facilitates national comparisons across long time periods using publication output and normalized citation impact values, we explored how this region (particularly the most productive individual countries within it) is developing. The publication output results reveal an increase in the scientific and technological activities in most of the Unasur countries (especially Brazil). Compared to the rest of the world, the citation impact trend is less favourable for all Unasur countries.

Abstract:
The present article deals with the issue of the quality of academic journals. After we have analyzed the current situation of the problems, we propose some solutions. Academic journals should try to attract the best articles by making an arrangement in advance with the writer or by contributions solicitation. At the same time, the amount of subscription should be enlarged and the academic quality of the editorial team should be improved. It is also important for striving for more financial support. We conclude that the coordination of the different aspects involved is the key to the improvement of the quality of academic journals.

Abstract:
Purpose Research with stem cells is a biomedical venture with great scientific impact, and whose development flows over into many other areas. This article aims to present a dual analysis of Spain's scientific output in this field during the period 1997-2007.
Design/methodology/approach - The authors used bibliometric indicators of a basic nature as well as techniques for the visualization and analysis of networks of scientific information based on a study of Key Words Plus.
Findings The output is mainly concentrated in Cataluna and Madrid, and hospitals are the most productive centres (followed by health institutes), where the main authors are affiliated. Main categories are hematology, oncology and biophysics. The outstanding areas of study revolve around the therapeutic use of transplant of hematopoietic progenitors, the processes of generation, proliferation and differentiation of lines of cells, and the study of neurosciences.
Originality/value - This study provides an overview of Spanish research involving stem cells, detecting and representing the main areas of research. The article considers the potential of Key Words Plus in combination with the proposed methodology as particularly useful for the analysis and delimitation of a scientific domain.

Abstract:
Purpose - The increasing availability of digital editions of journals, and/or the incorporation of the full-text versions of their papers in the largest aggregator databases, have been the highlights in the coming of age of digital libraries from many perspectives, ranging from collection development to preservation, from ready reference services to creating digital carrels. Full-text availability of research papers through several digital resources is not merely a great convenience for distributing knowledge, but also an indirect indicator of the acknowledgement of the popularity and importance of journals and other serial publications (such as conference proceedings) in many disciplines where such sources are the primary venues for scholarly and professional publishing. One of the purposes of the author's current research project was to find out how well three business databases reflect the popularity and familiarity of peer ranking and rating through 50 top rated marketin!
g-focused and marketing-related periodicals in the full-text coverage of those journals. This paper seeks to present some results.
Design/methodology/approach - The target journals were selected from the list of 50 marketing-focused and marketing-related journals ranked by nearly 630 faculty members from marketing departments of US and international universities in an outstanding large scale survey and research project by Hult et al. The presence and time-span of coverage of 50 journals and conference proceedings was analysed in three of the largest (partially) full-text business databases.
Findings - The research found that many highly rated and ranked journals in the sample were absent or very modestly present in the full-text subset even in the largest and most widely licensed three business databases tested.
Originality/value - The research adds a new dimension to evaluating databases by the specific criteria of full text availability of journals and other serial publications.

Abstract:
The non-technological types of innovation are neither clearly defined, nor are they differentiated from each other, from other forms of innovation, from innovation in general, and from creativity. Hence we use co-citation analysis based on bibliometrics to produce a quantitative literature review that results in identification of key areas of research within the non-technological innovation literature. It enables us to find out where the knowledge base comes from in each of the areas. By using authors as the units of analysis and incorporating all the citations that are included in the IS! Web of Science, we trace the evolution of the intellectual structure of the non-technological innovation field during the period 1975-2011.
