Abstract:
Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a disabling pain condition with sensory, motor and autonomic manifestations. Uncertainty remains about how CRPS can be effectively managed. We conducted a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for treatment and prophylactic interventions for CRPS published during the period 20002012, building on previous work by another group reviewing the period 19662000. Bibliographic database searches identified 173 papers which were filtered by three reviewers. This process generated 29 trials suitable for further analysis, each of which was reviewed and scored by two independent reviewers for methodological quality using a 15-item checklist. A number of novel and potentially effective treatments were investigated. Analysing the results from both review periods in combination, there was a steep rise in the number of published RCTs per review decade. There is evidence for the efficacy of 10 treatments (3x strong bisphosphonates, !
repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and graded motor imagery, 1x moderate and 6x limited evidence), and against the efficacy of 15 treatments (1x strong, 1x moderate and x13 limited). The heterogeneity of trialled interventions and the pilot nature of many trials militate against drawing clear conclusions about the clinical usefulness of most interventions. This and the observed phenomenon of excellent responses in CRPS subgroups would support the case for a network- and multi-centre approach in the conduct of future clinical trials. Most published trials in CRPS are small with a short follow-up period, although several novel interventions investigated from 2000 to 2012 appear promising.

Abstract:
To meet the energy requirements of sustainable economic growth, policymakers, analysts, and business leaders have increasingly turned to the role that energy efficiency might play. This has resulted in a growing energy efficiency literature, which is examined in this paper. Using bibliometric techniques, we analyze the database of Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index covering the 1991-2010 period. Of the 8,244 publications, 78.8 % were journal articles, and about 95.5 % were published in English. Based on the h-index, an evaluative indicator, the USA has produced the most influential set of publications on energy efficiency, followed by Canada, UK, Japan, and China. In contrast, China is second to the USA in the volume of its publications. Correspondingly, the University of California at Berkeley, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Tsinghua University were the most productive research organizations. The three most common subjects examined in this !
body of research were "energy and fuels", "environmental sciences", and "electrical and electronic engineering". Energy Policy has been the most productive journal, and "A water and heat management model for proton-exchange-membrane fuel-cells", has had the most citations (587 through May 2012). Based on an analysis of article titles and keywords, we conclude that the hotspots of energy efficiency research have been green communications, renewable energy, and energy sustainability; green communications, in particular, has developed rapidly as a focus of energy efficiency publications in recent years.

Abstract:
In this paper the relationship between symmetric minitive, maxitive, and modular aggregation operators is considered. It is shown that the intersection between any two of the three discussed classes is the same. Moreover, the intersection is explicitly characterized.
It turns out that the intersection contains families of aggregation operators such as OWMax, OWMin, and many generalizations of the widely-known Hirsch's h-index, often applied in scientific quality control. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
The generation of research involves producers (study authors and funders), products (studies and arising publications) and consumption (measured through readership and citation). Bibliometric analyses of research producers, products and consumption over time can be used to describe the evolution of health professions as captured in professional journal publications. Numerous bibliometric studies have been conducted however few have sampled nursing and allied health professional journals. This is despite a growing health workforce and socioeconomic pressures. The aim of this study was to use bibliometric analyses to track change in the producers, products and consumption of seven Australian nursing and allied health professional journals from 1985 through 2010. An analysis of all original research articles published in these journals was performed using a reliable bibliometric audit tool. Articles were sampled every 3 months and at 5 year intervals over a 25 year period. Info!
rmation relating to authorship, the research methods used and citation patterns was collected. Data were analysed descriptively. Over the study period, all journals shifted towards publishing research that used higher study designs, reported more quantitative data, and were authored by larger research teams. The rate at which this transition occurred (greater evidence base, quantitation and collaboration) differed among the journals sampled. The changes seen in the research published in these journals are likely to be a function of the strategic purpose of each publication (to its professional readership) as well as reflect wider socioeconomic phenomena. Therefore these trends are likely to continue in the future.

Abstract:
The advance of mobile and wireless technologies in recent years is permitting the development of new and more complex context-aware and pervasive systems. These applications cover a wide spectrum of problems, sectors, scenarios, and environments that aim to build smart environments, such as educative innovation. In this paper we present a proposal for a pervasive system providing students the access to bibliographic sources recommended by teachers on the subjects or courses on which the students are enrolled. In order to define the educational contents of a subject or course the IMS Learning Design standard has been used. Finally, we describe the use of NFC (Near Field Communication) for the development of the proposed pervasive system, showing the usefulness of the proposal and user acceptance.

Abstract:
A small number of studies have sought to establish that research papers with more funding acknowledgements achieve higher impact and have claimed that such a link exists because research supported by more funding bodies undergoes more peer review. In this paper, a test of this link is made using recently available data from the Web of Science, a source of bibliographic data that now includes funding acknowledgements. The analysis uses 3,596 papers from a single year, 2009, and a single journal, the Journal of Biological Chemistry. Analysis of this data using OLS regression and two ranks tests reveals the link between count of funding acknowledgements and high impact papers to be statistically significant, but weak. It is concluded that count of funding acknowledgements should not be considered a reliable indicator of research impact at this level. Relatedly, indicators based on assumptions that may hold true at one level of analysis may not be appropriate at other levels.

Abstract:
Recent studies have demonstrated that wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) significantly alter the magnitude and distribution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in receiving environments, indicating that wastewater treatment represents an important node for limiting ARG dissemination. This study examined the potential for membrane treatment of microconstituent ARGs and the effect of native wastewater colloids on the extent of their removal. Plasmids containing vanA (vancomycin) and bla(TEM) (beta-lactam) ARGs were spiked into three representative WWTP effluents versus a control buffer and tracked by quantitative polymerase chain reaction through a cascade of microfiltration and ultrafiltration steps ranging from 0.45 mu m to 1 kDa. Significant removal of ARGs was achieved by membranes of 100 kDa and smaller, and presence of wastewater colloids resulted in enhanced removal by 10 kDa and 1 kDa membranes. ARG removal was observed to correlate significantly with the correspond!
ing protein, polysaccharide, and total organic carbon colloidal fractions. Alumina membranes removed ARGs to a greater extent than polyvinylidene fluoride membranes of the same pore size (0.1 mu m), but only in the presence of wastewater material. Control studies confirmed that membrane treatment was the primary mechanism of ARG removal, versus other potential sources of loss. This study suggests that advanced membrane treatment technology is promising for managing public health risks of ARGs in wastewater effluents and that removal may even be enhanced by colloids in real-world wastewaters. Abstract:
Faculty who publish in interdisciplinary areas may be faced with the challenge of justifying research published in journals that are not considered important by their home department. This paper uses corporate governance (an academic area in business) as an example of an interdisciplinary research area. A core list of journals is developed using citations from Corporate Governance: An International Review, that demonstrates the interdisciplinary nature of corporate governance research. This core list can be used by both corporate governance academics and business librarians to help justify faculty publishing decisions. The process devised for developing a core list is applicable to other interdisciplinary areas. The paper concludes by exploring the implications of departmental journal lists and provides suggestions for both faculty and librarians.

Abstract:
Patent maps showing competition trends in technological development can provide valuable input for decision support on research and development (R&D) strategies. By introducing semantic patent analysis with advantages in representing technological objectives and structures, this paper constructs dynamic patent maps to show technological competition trends and describes the strategic functions of the dynamic maps. The proposed maps are based on subject-action-object (SAO) structures that are syntactically ordered sentences extracted using the natural language processing of the patent text; the structures of a patent encode the key findings of the invention and expertise of its inventors. Therefore, this paper introduces a method of constructing dynamic patent maps using SAO-based content analysis of patents and presents several types of dynamic patent maps by combining patent bibliographic information and patent mapping and clustering techniques. Building on the maps, this pa!
per provides further analyses to identify technological areas in which patents have not been granted ("patent vacuums"), areas in which many patents have actively appeared ("technological hot spots"), R&D overlap of technological competitors, and characteristics of patent clusters. The proposed analyses of dynamic patent maps are illustrated using patents related to the synthesis of carbon nanotubes. We expect that the proposed method will aid experts in understanding technological competition trends in the process of formulating R&D strategies.

Abstract:
In this paper we discuss the construction of a new parametric statistical hypothesis test for the equality of probability distributions. The test bases on the difference between Hirsch's h-indices of two equal-length i.i.d. random samples. For the sake of illustration, we analyze its power in case of Pareto-distributed input data. It turns out that the test is very conservative and has wide acceptance regions, which puts in question the appropriateness of the h-index usage in scientific quality control and decision making.

Abstract:
A new semi-automatic method is presented to standardize or codify addresses, in order to produce bibliometric indicators from bibliographic databases. The hypothesis is that this new method is very trustworthy to normalize authors' addresses, easy and quick to obtain. As a way to test the method, a set of already hand-coded data is chosen to verify its reliability: 136,821 Spanish documents (2006-2008) downloaded previously from the Web of Science database. Unique addresses from this set were selected to produce a list of keywords representing various institutional sectors. Once the list of terms is obtained, addresses are standardized with this information and the result is compared to the previous hand-coded data. Some tests are done to analyze possible association between both systems (automatic and hand-coding), calculating measures of recall and precision, and some statistical directional and symmetric measures. The outcome shows a good relation between both methods. Al!
though these results are quite general, this overview of institutional sectors is a good way to develop a second approach for the selection of particular centers. This system has some new features because it provides a method based on the previous non-existence of master lists or tables and it has a certain impact on the automation of tasks. The validity of the hypothesis has been proved taking into account not only the statistical measures, but also considering that the obtaining of general and detailed scientific output is less time-consuming and will be even less due to the feedback of these master tables reused for the same kind of data. The same method could be used with any country and/or database creating a new master list taking into account their specific characteristics.

Abstract:
Background: There is growing interest in the use of omega-3 fatty acid (n-3FA) lipid emulsions to prevent complications associated with parenteral nutrition. The authors systematically reviewed the evidence on the benefits and safety of n-3FA compared with standard lipid emulsions in children with intestinal disease, critical illness, trauma, or postoperative complications. Materials and Methods: The authors searched 4 bibliographic databases from their inception to March 2011, conference proceedings, trial registries, and reference lists. Two reviewers independently selected studies, assessed methodological quality, and rated the strength of the evidence. One reviewer extracted and a second reviewer verified data. The authors summarized findings qualitatively and conducted meta-analysis when appropriate. Results: Five randomized controlled trials with unclear risk of bias and 3 high-quality prospective cohort studies were included. The studies examined premature, low birth !
weight infants (n = 6) and children with heart disease (n = 1) or intestinal failure (n = 1). The strength of evidence was consistently low or very low across all lipid emulsion comparisons and outcomes. In young children, n-3FA emulsions resulted in improvement in some biochemical outcomes of intestinal failure-associated liver disease but no difference in mortality. Few studies examined patient-important outcomes, such as length of hospital and intensive care stay; need for transplantation, growth, and cognitive development; or the long-term effects and potential harms associated with these therapies. Conclusions: Currently, there is a lack of sufficient high-quality data to support the use of parenteral n-3FA lipid emulsions in children. Future trials examining long-term clinical outcomes and harms are needed. (JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr. 2013;37:44-55)

Abstract:
This paper proposes a citation rank based on spatial diversity (SDCR) in terms of cities and countries, focusing on the measurement of the "spatial" aspect in citation networks. Our main goal is to solve the citation bias caused by different geographical locations of citations. We empirically investigate spatial properties of citing distances, citation patterns and spatial diversity to understand geographical knowledge diffusion, based on the data from "Transportation Science and Technology" subject category in the Web of Science (1966-2009). We also compare the proposed ranking method with other bibliometric measures, and conduct a case study to figure out the recent ranks of the well-established authors in Transportation research. It is found that the SDCR of a focal author is highly correlated with the sum of spatial diversity weights ("strength") of all his in-links, and it is better to set the damping factors smaller than 0.75 when ranking authors with various initial a!
cademic years by SDCR. The cases show that Hong Kong is becoming a cluster in Transportation research.

Abstract:
The main methods for the determination of the temperature rise in calorimetric experiments corrected of heat losses to surroundings (called adiabatic temperature rise) are described thereafter. This corrected temperature rise is obtained analytically from experimental temperature-time curves. The general scheme reported by Henri R,gnault and Leopold Pfaundler for the first time in the 19th century is considered as the basis for all methods elaborated afterwards. A bibliographical study raised five methods including R,gnault-Pfaundler's. These methods have been applied on five experimental temperature-time curves obtained with an isoperibolic reference gas calorimeter at the French national metrology and testing institute (LNE) on combustion of pure methane. This paper deeply details a new analytical method elaborated at LNE exposing best heat transfer phenomena representation occurring in the water bath calorimeter. A comparative study of the five methods of the temperature !
rise determination and of their associated uncertainties is here presented.

The interest in using phase change slurry (PCS) media as thermal storage and heat transfer fluids is increasing and thus leading to an enhancement in the number of articles on the subject. In air-conditioning and refrigeration applications, PCS systems represent a pure benefit resulting in the increase of thermal energy storage capacity, high heat transfer characteristics and positive phase change temperatures which can occur under low pressures. Hence, they allow the increase of energy efficiency and reduce the quantity of thermal fluids. This review describes the formation, thermo-physical, rheological, heat transfer properties and applications of four PCS systems: Clathrate hydrate slurry (CHS), Microencapsulated Phase Change Materials Slurry (MPCMS), shape-stabilized PCM slurries (SPCMSs) and Phase Change Material Emulsions (PCMEs). It regroups a bibliographic summary of important information that can be very helpful when such systems are used. It also gives interesting !
and valuable insights on the choice of the most suitable PCS media for laboratory and industrial applications. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
To analyze the keywords used in articles published in eating disorder journals indexed in MEDLINE to determine their correspondence with the MeSH or the APA-Terms. Descriptive bibliometric study. We established three inclusion criteria: articles had to be original, to contain keywords, and to have been in the MEDLINE database in the last 5 years. 918 original with 1,868 different keywords were studied. Eight original articles (0.87 %) presented complete correspondence between the keywords used and the indexing terms. Of the keywords studied, 300 (16.06 %) coincided with MeSH and 366 (19.59 %) with APA-Terms. The comparison between keywords matching MeSH and those matching APA-Terms, we found significant differences indicating greater agreement with APA-Terms (p < 0.001). The weak agreement between keywords and indexing terms may hinder the cataloguing of eating disorder articles. The authors of these studies made greater use of keywords related to APA-Terms.

Abstract:
Two kinds of bibliographic tools are used to retrieve scientific publications and make them available online. For one kind, access is free as they store information made publicly available online. For the other kind, access fees are required as they are compiled on information provided by the major publishers of scientific literature. The former can easily be interfered with, but it is generally assumed that the latter guarantee the integrity of the data they sell. Unfortunately, duplicate and fake publications are appearing in scientific conferences and, as a result, in the bibliographic services. We demonstrate a software method of detecting these duplicate and fake publications. Both the free services (such as Google Scholar and DBLP) and the charged-for services (such as IEEE Xplore) accept and index these publications.

Abstract:
In this study we present an analysis of the research trends in Pakistan in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. Starting with just seven publications in the year 2000, this number has steadily increased to 542 for the year 2011. Among the top 15 institutions with publications in nanotechnology 13 are universities and only two are R&D organizations. Almost 35 % of the research publications are in the field of material sciences followed by chemistry and physics in that order. The growth in the publications for period 2000-2011 is studied through relative growth rate and doubling time. The authorship pattern is measured by different collaboration parameters, like collaborative index, degree of collaboration, collaboration coefficient and modified collaboration coefficient. Finally the quality of papers is assessed by means of the h-index, g-index, hg-index and p-index.

Abstract:
Because some cited references are not relevant to the citing patent and not all the relevant references are cited, the study attempts to use the bibliographic coupling (BC) approach to filter the irrelevant patent citations and supplement the relevant uncited patent citations to construct a patent citation network (PCN). The study selected the field of electric vehicle technology to explore the phenomenon and examined the characteristics of PCNs in terms of the average BC strength and the average citation time lag. Four PCNs were constructed in this study. The aggregated PCN (APCN) excluded the irrelevant patent citations and added the relevant uncited patent citations, which has brought out significant improvement. The APCN became more concentrated and the information which reserved in the APCN was the most current. Additionally, some invisible technology clusters and relationships were also manifested in the APCN.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: To identify global research trends in transplantation of neural stem cells, Schwann cells and olfactory ensheathing cells for spinal cord injury.
DATA RETRIEVAL: We performed a bibliometric analysis of studies on transplantation of neural stem cells, Schwann cells and olfactory ensheathing cells for spinal cord injury published from 2002 to 2011 and retrieved from the Web of Science, using the key words spinal cord injury along with either neural stem cell, Schwann cell or olfactory ensheathing cell.
SELECTION CRITERIA: Inclusion criteria: (a) peer-reviewed published articles on neural stem cells, Schwann cells or olfactory ensheathing cells for spinal cord injury indexed in the Web of Science; (b) original research articles, reviews, meeting abstracts, proceedings papers, book chapters, editorial materials and news items; and (c) published between 2002 and 2011. Exclusion criteria: (a) articles that required manual searching or telephone access; (b) documents that were not published in the public domain; and (c) corrected papers.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: (1) Annual publication output, distribution by journal, distribution by institution and top-cited articles on neural stem cells; (2) annual publication output, distribution by journal, distribution by institution and top-cited articles on Schwann cells; (3) annual publication output, distribution by journal, distribution by institution and top-cited articles on olfactory ensheathing cells.
RESULTS: This analysis, based on articles indexed in the Web of Science, identified several research trends among studies published over the past 10 years in transplantation of neural stem cells, Schwann cells and olfactory ensheathing cells for spinal cord injury. The number of publications increased over the 10-year period examined. Most papers appeared in journals with a focus on neurology, such as Journal of Neurotrauma, Experimental Neurology and Glia. Research institutes publishing on the use of neural stem cells to repair spinal cord injury were mostly in the USA and Canada. Those publishing on the use of Schwann cells were mostly in the USA and Canada as well. Those publishing on the use of olfactory ensheathing cells were mostly in the UK, the USA and Canada.
CONCLUSION: On the basis of the large number of studies around the world, cell transplantation has proven to be the most promising therapeutic approach for spinal cord injury.

Abstract:
Background: Dementia is a chronic and evolutive disease, for which no curative treatment exists. Evaluating the quality of life of patients suffering from dementia is therefore an important component of management. Aims: To summarise existing literature regarding quality of life instruments specific to dementia, and to identify factors associated with quality of life. Methods: We analysed studies published between November 1996 and December 2010 and referenced in PubMed, and focusing on the development and/or validation of quality of life instruments specific to dementia, or studies having used any such instrument to evaluate a therapeutic intervention. Results: Nine quality of life instruments were identified. Place of residence and level of education do not appear to play any significant role. Results were conflicting for age and sex. There appears to be a relation, albeit a weak one, with cognitive function. The factors most frequently associated with lower quality of lif!
e were behavioural disorders, dependence, and caregiver burden. Quality of life of patients under pharmacological treatment is poorly documented, while occupational therapy and cognitive stimulation appear to have moderate positive effects.

Abstract:
We study the cost-minimization problem posed by Ferrer i Cancho and Sole in their model of communication that aimed at explaining the origin of Zipf's law (2003 Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. 100 788). Direct analysis shows that the minimum cost is min{lambda, 1 - lambda}, where lambda determines the relative weights of speaker's and hearer's costs in the total, as shown in several previous works using different approaches. The nature and multiplicity of the minimizing solution change discontinuously at lambda = 1/2, being qualitatively different for lambda < 1/2, lambda > 1/2, and lambda = 1/2. Zipf's law is found only in a vanishing fraction of the minimum-cost solutions at lambda = 1/2 and therefore is not explained by this model. Imposing the further condition of equal costs yields distributions substantially closer to Zipf's law ones, but significant differences persist. We also investigate the solutions reached with the previously used minimization algorithm and find that they !
correctly recover global minimum states at the transition.

Abstract:
Introduction. - Approximately, 30% of kidney cancers are diagnosed in patients over 75 years, mostly by fortuitously. This review had identified the indications of ablative treatment among others options for kidney cancer in these elderly patients.
Materials and methods. - A bibliographic research in French and English using Medline (R) with the keywords "tumor"; "kidney"; "radio frequency" and "cryoablation" was performed.
Results. - The expected benefits were less morbidity, reduced hospital stay and preservation of renal function. Ablative techniques have allowed a satisfactory cancer control but lower than that obtained by surgical excision at the cost of a lower morbidity. Cryoablation has allowed better oncological results than the radiofrequency. A decision tree for management of small renal tumors in patients defining a role for these treatments depending on the patient's life expectancy, its comorbidities (Charlson index) and tumor size was proposed.
Conclusion. - The preferential indications for cryoablation and radiofrequency treatments in elderly patients are tumors under 3 cm and less than 4 cm respectively, when life expectancy is between 3 and 7 years. (C) 2012 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
Introduction. - Intravesical BCG immuno-therapy with maintenance therapy is considered as the standard treatment for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer with high risk of recurrence and progression. In practice, adverse events (AEs) of BCG therapy could restrict its prescription by urologists. The aim of this article was to present a review of these AEs and of their management.
Materials and methods. - A bibliographic research in French and English using Medline (R) and Embase (R) with the keywords "BCG", "bladder", "complication", "toxicity", "adverse reaction", "prevention" and "treatment" was performed.
Results. - The main mechanism of AEs of BCG are infectious (cystitis, fever), immuno-allergic (granulomatous prostatitis, epididynno-orchitis, and granulomatous reactions) and auto-immune (arthralgies, rash). Management of AEs is based on their pathophysiological mechanisms. Classifications of BCG therapy AEs based on clinical features allow to adapt their treatments.
Conclusion. - The combination of antibiotics directed against BCG, steroid or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication and symptomatic treatment is currently the triad on which is set up the appropriate treatment of severe AEs. Reductions of BCG doses and ofloxacin medication after instillation decrease the frequency and severity of minor and moderate AEs. Severe or more than 7 days long infectious AEs, immuno-allergic AEs or auto-immune during more than 7 days impose cessation of BCG immuno-therapy. (C) 2012 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
This paper extends a previous study (Coniam, 2011) into a corpus of manuscript (MS) reviews conducted for the journal System by one reviewer in the eight-year period 2003-2011. The current paper highlights additional facets of the review process that focus on issues involving authors themselves. The study examines two related sets of research questions. The first set concerns the relationship between verdict (whether the MS is accepted or rejected) with the geographical area in which the study is situated and with the 'International English' quality of submissions. The second set explores the distribution of comments across the different categories of analysis together with the ratio of negative to positive comments produced by the reviewer. The paper closes with the reassurance to authors that reviews appear to be written individually and with respect for the MS in hand, rather than external criteria or biases- at least from the perspective of the current reviewer. Authors !
contemplating article submission may wish to consider the extent to which the number of negative comments in a particular category reflects aspects of their own writing in that area. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
The methodology proposed by Ioannides and Overman (2003 Regional Science and Urban Economics 33 127-137) is applied to estimate a local Zipf exponent using data for the entire 20th century of the complete distribution of cities (incorporated places) without any size restrictions in the US. First, kernel regressions are run using the Nadaraya-Watson estimator, excluding some atypical observations (5.66% of the sample). The results reject Zipf's law from a long-term perspective, but the evidence supports Gibrat's law. In the short term, decade by decade, the evidence in favour of Zipf's law is stronger. Second, to consider the whole sample the LOcally WEighted Scatter plot Smoothing (LOWESS) algorithm is applied. From a long-term perspective the evidence supporting Zipf's law increases, but the evidence supporting Gibrat's law is weaker, as small cities exhibit higher variance than the other cities. Finally, the estimated values by decade are again closer to Zipf's law.

Abstract:
We conducted a scientometric analysis to determine the main trends and gaps of studies on the use of ecological niche models (ENMs) to predict the distribution of invasive species. We used the database of the Thomson Institute for Scientific Information (ISI). We found 190 papers published between 1991 and 2010 in 82 journals. The number of papers was low in the 1990s, but began to increase after 2003. One-third of the papers were published by researchers from the United States of America, and consequently, the USA was also the most studied region. The majority of studies were carried out in terrestrial environments, while only a few investigated aquatic systems, probably because important aquatic predictor variables are scarce or unavailable for most regions in the world. Species-occurrence records were mainly composed of presence-only records, and almost 70% of the studies were carried out with plants and insects. Twenty-three different distribution modelling methods were !
used. The Genetic Algorithm for Rule-set Production (GARP) was used most often. Our scientometric analysis showed a growing interest in the use of ENMs to predict the distribution of invasive species, especially in the last decade, which is probably related to the increase in species introductions worldwide. Among some important gaps that need to be filled, the relatively small number of studies conducted in developing countries and in aquatic environments deserves careful attention.

Abstract:
Background & aims: By means of this update, the GARIN working group aims to define its position regarding the treatment of patients with diabetes or stress hyperglycaemia and artificial nutrition. In this area there are many aspects of uncertainty, especially in non-critically ill patients.
Methods: Bibliographical review, and specific questions in advance were discussed and answered at a meeting in the form of conclusions.
Results: We propose a definition of stress hyperglycaemia. The indications and access routes for artificial nutrition are no different in patients with diabetes/stress hyperglycaemia than in non-diabetics. The objective must be to keep pre-prandial blood glucose levels between 100 and 140 mg/dl and post-prandial levels between 140 and 180 mg/dl. Hyperglycemia can be prevented through systematic monitoring of capillary glycaemias and adequately calculate energy-protein needs. We recommend using enteral formulas designed for patients with diabetes (high monounsaturated fat) to facilitate metabolic control. The best drug treatment for treating hyperglycaemia/diabetes in hospitalised patients is insulin and we make recommendations for adapt the theoretical insulin action to the nutrition infusion regimen. We also addressed recommendations for future investigation.
Conclusions: This recommendations about artificial nutrition in patients with diabetes or stress hyperglycaemia can add value to clinical work. (Nutr Hosp. 2012;27:1837-1849) DOI:10.3305/nh.2012.27.6.6076

Abstract:
Cadernos do Nosso Tempo and the National Interest The aim of this article was to investigate how Brazil's national interest was interpreted by authors and editors of Cadernos do Nosso Tempo [Reports of Our Time], published by the Brazilian Institute of Economics, Sociology, and Politics (IBESP) from December 1953 to March 1956. Based on a systematic reading of Cadernos and the related bibliographic references, the author discusses the understandings of the political state-of-the-art, the nation's potential development, the obstacles to such development, and Getulio Vargas' political legacy. According to IBESP intellectuals, nationalism constituted the only means for overcoming fragmented political experience.

Abstract:
The road design Rules often refer to information, values and methodologies recommended in bibliographic references: the driver eye height from ground is one of these. In this work a series of height values was obtained by cross pictures of travelling cars; a second data set comes from scale sketches of passenger cars. The results, even though partial, have made possible to study sides of the road safety due to real values of the driver eye height. This is one of the parameters to estimate the minimum radius in vertical crest and marginally be considered also to check the minimum lateral distance of an obstacle to visibility in horizontal curves. Abstract:
Introduction: The objective of this study was to identify and characterize the most highly cited clinical research articles published on sepsis.
Methods: A comprehensive list of citation classics in sepsis was generated by searching the database of Web of Science-Expanded (1970 to present) using keywords 'sepsis' or 'septic shock'. The top 50 cited clinical research papers were retrieved by reading the abstract or full text if needed. Each eligible article was reviewed for basic information, including country of origin, article type, journals, authors, and funding sources.
Results: A total of 2,151 articles were cited more than 100 times; the 50 top-cited clinical articles were published between 1974 and 2008. The number of citations ranged from 372 to 2,932, with a mean of 678 citations per article. These citation classics came from nine countries, of which 26 articles came from the United States. Rush University and the University of Pittsburgh lead the list of classics with six papers each. The 50 top-cited articles were published in 17 journals, with the New England Journal of Medicine and Journal of the American Medical Association topping the list. The top 50 articles consisted of 21 clinical trials and 29 observational studies.
Conclusions: Our bibliometric analysis provides a historical perspective on the progress of clinical research on sepsis. Articles originating from the United States and published in high-impact journals are most likely to be cited in the field of sepsis research.

Abstract:
Bioengineering has become one of the most promising fields in regenerative medicine. Many of its applications have been settled through stem cell research in order to develop innovative stimuli to differentiate the cells into a specific lineage via physical stimulation such as thermal, mechanical or electrical stimuli to avoid the use of biochemical products. Many examples are found in literature], however none of them could provide conclusive answers in this research field. Piezoelectric materials are able to combine mechanical and electrical stimulation. Environments mimicking in vivo conditions are supposed to be the best to induce differentiation process, but these mechanisms are still not fully mastered and very much dependent on cell type.
In this poster, we will introduce the experimental setup used to study the effects of physical (i.e. electrical and/or mechanical) stimulation on human mesenchymal stem cells. An overview of the thought process leading to our project is exposed, as well as a brief bibliographical study of electrical stimulation effects on cells. The emphasis will be focused on the piezoelectric materials used in this project. We selected a nanocomposite material, a copolymer P(VDF-TrFE) matrix charged with ZnO nanoparticles, in order to modulate the mechanical and piezoelectric properties of the matrix as well as to provide a better sticking surface favouring cell adhesion.

ABSTRACT: Business Process (BP) metrics are used for controlling
the quality and improving models. We give an overview of the existing
metrics for describing various aspects of BP models. We propose simple
yet practical square metrics for describing complexity of a BP model.
These metrics are easy to interpret and provide some basic information
about the structural complexity of the model. The proposed metrics are to
be used with models built with Business Process Model and Notation
(BPMN). It is currently the most widespread language used for BP modeling.

Abstract:
As the preponderance of journal rankings becomes increasingly more frequent and prominent in academic decision making, such rankings in broad discipline categories is taking on an increasingly important role. The paper focuses on the robustness of rankings of academic journal quality and research impact using the widely-used Thomson Reuters ISI Web of Science citations database (ISI) for the Statistics & Probability category. The paper analyses 110 ISI international journals in Statistics & Probability using quantifiable research assessment measures (RAMs), and highlights the similarities and differences in various RAMs, which are based on alternative transformations of citations and influence. Alternative RAMs may be calculated annually or updated daily to determine when, where and how (frequently) published papers are cited (see Chang, McAleer and Oxley (2011a, b, c), Chang, Maasoumi and McAleer (2012)). The RAMs are grouped in four distinct classes that include *impact fa!
ctor*, mean citations and non-citations, journal policy, number of high quality papers, and journal influence and article influence. These classes include the most widely used RAMs, namely the classic 2-year *impact factor* including journal self citations (2YIF), 2-year *impact factor* excluding journal self citations (2YIF*), 5-year *impact factor* including journal self citations (5YIF), Eigenfactor (or Journal Influence), Article Influence, h-index, PI-BETA (Papers Ignored By Even The Authors), 5YD2 (= 5YIF/2YIF) as a measure of citations longevity, and escalating self citations as a measure of increasing journal self citations. The paper highlights robust rankings based on the harmonic mean of the ranks of RAMs across the 4 classes. It is shown that focusing solely on the 2YIF of a journal, which partly answers the question as to when published papers are cited, to the exclusion of other informative RAMs, which answer where and how (frequently) published papers are cit!
ed, can lead to a distorted evaluation of journal quality, imp!
 act and
influence relative to the more robust harmonic mean of the ranks.

Abstract:
Most biomedical journals accept original research articles in the form of "brief reports". We compared the citations to full papers versus brief reports in a sample of journals on Infectious Diseases, Clinical Microbiology, and Antimicrobial Agents. Brief reports were cited less often than full-size articles [regression coefficient: 10.94 (95 % CI: 5.19, 16.69)] even after adjustment for the journal's *impact factor*. Our findings may influence decisions of editors and authors regarding brief reports.

Abstract:
One is inclined to conceptualize impact in terms of citations per publication, and thus as an average. However, citation distributions are skewed, and the average has the disadvantage that the number of publications is used in the denominator. Using hundred percentiles, one can integrate the normalized citation curve and develop an indicator that can be compared across document sets because percentile ranks are defined at the article level. I apply this indicator to the set of 58 journals in the WoS Subject Category of "Nanoscience & nanotechnology," and rank journals, countries, cities, and institutes using non-parametric statistics. The significance levels of results can thus be indicated. The results are first compared with the ISI-impact factors, but this Integrated Impact Indicator (I3) can be used with any set downloaded from the (Social) Science Citation Index. The software is made publicly available at the Internet. Visualization techniques are also specified for eva!
luation by positioning institutes on Google Map overlays.

Abstract:
Objective.: To assess the scholarly output of grants funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) that published knowledge relevant to the impact of health information technologies on patient safety and quality of care outcomes.
Study design: We performed a bibliometric analysis of the identified scholarly articles, their journals, and citations. In addition, we performed a qualitative review of the full-text articles and grant documents.
Data collection/extraction methods: Papers published by AHRQ-funded investigators were retrieved from MEDLINE, journal impact factors were extracted from the 2010 Thompson Reuters Journal Citation Report, citations were retrieved from ISI's Web of Knowledge and Google Scholar.
Principal findings.: Seventy-two articles met the criteria for review. Most articles addressed one or more of AHRQ's outcome goals and focus priorities. The average *impact factor* for the journals was 4.005 (range: 0.654-28.899). The articles, and their respective grants, represented a broad range of health information technologies.
Conclusions.: This set of AHRQ-funded research projects addressed the goals and priorities of AHRQ, indicating notable contributions to the scientific knowledge base on the impact of information system use in healthcare.

Abstract:

We study models of the formation of citation networks in a setting where authors/firms care about their citations and are rational. The effect of these two features on the diffusion of useful ideas in a setting with complete information about past citations leads to multiplicity of equilibria. With field-specific norms, however, uniqueness obtains. Asymmetric information about quality may lead to earlier citations and the combination of asymmetric information about quality and strategic entry gives equilibria in which players signal quality by timing of entry. Ex post efficiency cannot be guaranteed, but ex ante efficiency is sometimes attainable.

ABSTRACT: Rankings based on counts are often presented to identify
popular items, such as baby names, English words, or Web sites. This
article shows that, in some examples, the, number of correctly identified
items can be very small. We introduce a standard error versus rank plot
to diagnose possible misrankings. Then to explain the slowly growing
number of correct ranks, we model the entire set of count data via a Zipf-
Poisson ensemble with independent Xi similar to Poi(Ni-alpha) for alpha >
1 and N > 0 and integers i >= 1. We show that as N -> infinity, the first
n'(N) random variables have their proper order X-1 > X-2 > ... > X-n',
relative to each other, with probability tending to 1 for n' up to
(AN/log(N))(1/(alpha+2)) for A = alpha(2)(alpha + 2)/4. We also show,that
the rate N1(alpha+2) cannot be achieved. The ordering of the first n'(N)
entities does not preclude X-m > X-n', for some interloping m > n'.
However, we show that the first n '' random variables are correctly
ordered exclusive of any interlopers, with probability tending to 1 if n
'' <= (BN/log(N))(1+(alpha+2)) for any B < A. We also show how to compute
the cutoff for alternative models such as a Zipf-Mandelbrot-Poisson
ensemble.

ABSTRACT: Objective: To perform a bibliometric analysis of theses
and dissertations on prematurity in the Capes database from 1987 to 2009.

Methods: This is a descriptive study that used the bibliometric approach
for the production of indicators of scientific production. Operationally,
the methodology was developed in four steps: 1) construction of the
theoretical framework; 2) data collection sourced from the abstracts of
theses and dissertations available in the Capes Thesis Database which
presented the issue of prematurity in the period 1987 to 2009; 3)
organization, processing and construction of bibliometric indicators; 4)
analysis and interpretation of results.

Results: Increase in the scientific literature on prematurity during the
period 1987 to 2009; production is represented mostly by dissertations;
the institution that received prominence was the Universidade de Sao
Paulo. The studies are directed toward the low birth weight and very low
birth weight preterm newborn, encompassing the social, biological and
multifactorial causes of prematurity.

Conclusions: There is a qualified, diverse and substantial scientific
literature on prematurity developed in various graduate programs of
higher education institutions in Brazil. J Pediatr (Rio J). 2012;

ABSTRACT: This paper evaluates the factors on which depends the
appearance in literature of the articles that treats the survey
interviewer characteristics topic. For this purpose we do a bibliometric
analysis. Our research is based on 234 articles which were published
during 1949-2010, which approaches the topic of the survey interviewer
characteristics and which can be find in the online articles databases.
We aim to estimate the association of factors that can influence the
appearance of an article on this topic in prestigious journals and to
evaluate the influence of those factors. In the data analysis we used
data association analysis and logit regression model. Data were processed
in the statistical programs R. The results of statistical analyses have
shown that, for the analyzed articles, the time period when the articles
had been elaborated and the geographical area where the author is from
are factors influencing the publication of the studied articles in a
prestigious journal.

Abstract:
Our aim deals with appraising the annual impact calculation of journals belonging to the JCR, in terms of the expected citation (with or without selfcitations) by published paper in a range of k-years. A Bayesian approach to the problem, should reflect not only the current prestige of a journal, but also taking into account its recent trajectory. In this wide context, credibility theory becomes an adequate mechanism deciding whether journal's *impact factor* calculation to be more or less plausible. Under prior belief that journal quality is determined by its *impact factor*, we model the citation-quality process by choosing a conjugated family of the exponential class in order to obtain a net impact credibility formula. Proposed weighting schema produces the effect of smoothing out any sudden increases or decreases in the year-by-year *impact factor*. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
A proposal is made in this paper for a broadening of perspective in evaluative bibliometrics by complementing the (standard) times cited with a cited reference analysis for a fieldspecific citation impact measurement. The times cited approach counts the citations of a given publication set. In contrast, we change the perspective and start by selecting all papers dealing with a specific research topic or field (the example in this study is research on Aspirin). Then we extract all cited references from the papers of this field-specific publication set and analyse which papers, scientists, and journals have been cited most often. In this study, we use the Chemical Abstracts registry number to select the publications for a specific field. However, the cited reference approach can be used with any other field classification system proposed up to now. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
We give a heuristic proof of the relation between the *impact factor* (IF) and the uncitedness factor (U), the fraction of the papers that are uncited: U = 1/1+IF This generalizes the proof of Hsu and Huang [Physica A 391, 2129-2134, 2012] who obtain the same result but based on the assumption of the validity of the Matthew-effect. This new informetric function opens the discussion on universal informetric laws, distribution dependent laws and parameter dependent laws of which examples from the informetrics literature are given. Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to test for the presence of order-effect bias in journal ranking surveys. Data were obtained from 379 active knowledge management and intellectual capital researchers who rated 25 journals on a 7-point scale. Five different versions of the survey instrument were utilized. Consistent with the cognitive elaboration model, the satisficing theory, and the Gricean maxim of orderliness, order-effect bias was observed in journal ranking surveys. Journals that appear in the beginning of the ranking list delivered to survey respondents consistently receive higher scores than journals at the end of the list. Overall, the position of the journal in the list explains over 10% of its score. Therefore, authors of journal ranking studies are recommended to use multiple versions of the survey instrument with randomized journal orders. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
Background: The aim of this study was to appraisal the effect of highly cited papers in the field of public health and find out whether the unusual citations affect the ranking order of the journals in this field or not. A total number of 142 journals titles were listed in Journal Citation Report (ISI Thomson) in the field of "Public, Environmental & Occupational Health". All but one of them had published papers at least for a year from 2009 to 2010. Journal title, number of citations and publication year of 45685 papers were collected from ISI web of knowledge database at December 25, 2011. About half of the papers (23226) had no citations and 89.4% (40835) had less than 6 citations. We concluded that the ranking of journals in the field of public health is not affected by the individual papers with unusual number of citations.

Abstract:
Authorship and citation practices evolve with time and differ by academic discipline. As such, indicators of research productivity based on citation records are naturally subject to historical and disciplinary effects. We observe these effects on a corpus of astronomer career data constructed from a database of refereed publications. We employ a simple mechanism to measure research output using author and reference counts available in bibliographic databases to develop a citation-based indicator of research productivity. The total research impact (tori) quantifies, for an individual, the total amount of scholarly work that others have devoted to his/her work, measured in the volume of research papers. A derived measure, the research impact quotient (riq), is an age-independent measure of an individual's research ability. We demonstrate that these measures are substantially less vulnerable to temporal debasement and cross-disciplinary bias than the most popular current measur!
es. The proposed measures of research impact, tori and riq, have been implemented in the Smithsonian/NASA Astrophysics Data System.
