Abstract:
Green roof research is a multidisciplinary and new research area. We
conducted a bibliometric quantification to assess the rate of
publications in specific areas of research for this novel research area
based on the scientific literature as available from the Web of Science.
Bibliometric research can provide valuable information about changes in
the trends within a particular area of research. For example, we found
that the number of publications in this field increased in the last two
decades at very similar pace to other pre-established academic
disciplines. We also found that papers on green roofs were classified
into 32 research areas. There was very little change in the frequency of
most research areas through time. The percentages of plant sciences,
forestry, marine and freshwater biology and biodiversity conservation of
the total research areas classifications used each year increased
significantly with time, while architecture decreased significantly with
time signifying an increased interest in environmental issues and less
focus on architectural issues. The distribution of publications between
countries has been skewed, with the USA and the EU conducting 66% of the
research, and thus allocation of research effort is focused in those
continents and predominantly in temperate ecosystems. However, there has
been a sharp increase in the number of countries that conduct green roof
research. Our work provides a suite of indicators that can be combined
to give a useful picture of the development of green roof research and
identifies the challenges which lie ahead for this novel research area.

Abstract:
The spatial distribution and density of scientists can have important
implications for key aspects of scientific processes, such as
innovation, networking, rates of knowledge exchange and success in large
competitive grants. In this paper, we examine the research output of
different research organizations and universities in Australia, with the
aim of identifying hotspots of ecological research and how these
hotspots have changed over the last 20 years. We used publications from
10 reputable peer-reviewed international journals as a measure of
research output. We identified a number of ecology hotspot clusters.
Some clusters have developed significantly over the last 20 years, while
others have declined in output over time. The University of Sydney,
University of Queensland, James Cook University and Melbourne University
had the largest output levels among universities. Results also showed
large increases in output over the last 5-year period (2006-2010),
possibly because of the impending introduction of the Excellence in
Research for Australia.

PLAGIARISM

Abstract:
Conference proceedings are one of the most important forms of
communication for computer scientists. This study investigated the
policies of a large number of computer science journals with regard to
the republication of papers which had already appeared in conference
proceedings. Nearly one-quarter of journal editors would not republish
such papers other than in special circumstances (such as a special
conference issue), and almost all of the remainder would do so only
after substantial updating and expansion of the original paper. Many
specified the amount of content that should be new: 30% was the
proportion most frequently mentioned. Thus, many sections of text may be
identical to the original paper. However, some journal editors do not
appear to consider this self-plagiarism provided the original
publication is properly cited. Nevertheless, such (re)publication is
likely to lead to high similarity scores in CrossCheck; in this field,
therefore, journal editors need to exercise particular discretion when
evaluating CrossCheck results.

Abstract:
A large literature following Hirsch (2005) has proposed citation-based
indexes of individuals' research output. This paper views Hirsch's index
as one member of a larger class and examines how well different indexes
align with labor market outcomes for young, tenured economists at 50 US
departments. Variants that emphasize smaller numbers of highly-cited
papers are more aligned with labor market outcomes than is Hirsch's
original index. It also examines how the market assesses jointly
authored work, and how indexes can be adjusted for differences in
citations across fields and years of experience. (JEL A14, C43)

Abstract:
The Australian Medical Journal is important to Australian anaesthesia in
that, as well as associated editorials, it recorded the first use of
ether for surgical operations. Though it survived from 1 August 1846
until 1 October 1847, its first issue was surrounded with mystery,
referring to an earlier publication. Proof of this earlier issue of
April 1846 has been discovered though no copy remains extant.

Abstract:
The objective of this paper is to enhance understanding of the evolution
of convergence. Previous research has shown that the technological
interfaces between distinct industries are one of the major sources of
new radical cross-industry innovations. The study creates novel patent
analysis methods to analyze technological convergence and provide tools
for anticipating the early stages of convergence. Our case study is
based historically on two very distinct industries of the paper and
electronics companies as a test environment to evaluate the importance
of emerging business sectors and technological convergence as a source
of industry transformation. Patent data include citations to previous
patents and to the non-patent literature. These citations open up the
possibility of tracing technological trajectories of the industries.
Patent data was collected from the 84 main players operating in the
radio-frequency identification value chain. The test environment of
selected patent data base is only used to use, develop and illustrate
the patent analysis tools for researching convergence of industries.
Patent citation indicators, like citations made and received to patents
and non-patent literature, pioneering innovations and technology cycle
time are used to evaluate importance of this technology based industry
transformation. Overall results from the study are that the citation
analysis method shed light of the future technology competitive arena.
Further research is needed to understand more deeply the relations and
interaction between different stages in the convergence or fusion
process. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
The concept of service innovation is significant for innovation strategy
and economic growth. However, since the term "service innovation"
represents a broad sense, there does not exist common understanding
about what is service innovation even among experts. We developed a
methodology to determine the structure and geographical distribution of
knowledge, as well as to reveal the structure of research collaboration
in such an interdisciplinary area as service innovation by performing
journal information analysis, citation network analysis and
visualization. Our results show that there are mainly two groups
relating to service innovation. Knowledge in these areas has been
growing rapidly in recent years. In particular, the fields of ecosystem
and IT & Web are exhibiting high growth. We also demonstrated that the
global network of knowledge is formed around the powerful hub of the US.
The research competency of Asian countries lags behind that of the US
and EU. With respect to research collaboration, we identify room for
enhancing international collaboration. Our methodology could be useful
in forming policies to promote service innovation. Finally, we propose
the creation of an international collaboration fund. (C) 2012 Elsevier

Abstract:
Impact factors (IFs) are scores based on the frequency with which
articles in a journal have been cited in other journals during a 2-year
or 5-year period. Impact factors vary across disciplines and even within
fields because of differences in citing behaviors, types of
publications, and other factors. Nurses need to understand IFs and the
implications for them as authors, particularly in light of the small
number of nursing journals with IFs. This article describes journal IFs,
the current state of IFs for nursing journals, and considerations in
selecting a journal for submission of an article.

Abstract:
Background: This study was designed to assess and compare the quantity
and quality of Iranian and Turkish researchers working in the field of
Parasitology from bibliometric point of view.
Methods: To assess the contributions and achievements of the Iranian and
Turkish parasitologists, bibliometric analysis was carried out based on
the citation data retrieved from Web of Science.
Results: The absolute productivity of Turkish and Iranian
parasitologists' papers has almost tripled for Turkey, from 12 papers in
2002 to 36 papers in 2011, and decuple for Iran, from 10 papers to 123
from 2002 to 2010. The average number of citation per article is about
5.8 and 4 for Turkish and Iranian parasitologists' papers, respectively.
The "Veterinary Parasitology" journal was the most cited journal in both
countries. The majority (more than 90%) of cited items was foreign
journal articles and one half of all references in journals articles
dated 11 and 12 years while one half of cited books was dated within 14
to16 years for Turkish and Iranian papers, respectively.
Conclusion: Based on observed data and applied model, it is anticipated
that the total number of Iranian and Turkish parasitologists'
publications in Web of Science will exceed of 2512 and 240 articles per
annum for Iranian and Turkish in 2020, respectively.

Abstract:
Objective: To compare basic bibliometric indicators on the topic of
smoking by Spanish authors in Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus (2000 to
2009). Methods: The search was performed in SCI-Expanded and Scopus (key
words "smok*" OR "tobac*"). Results: Total annual mean of documents was
41 +/- 12 for WoS vs 60 +/- 16 for Scopus (p = 0.007). The collaboration
index (CI) increased during the study period in both databases. The CI
annual mean was 9.41 +/- 2.73 in WoS vs 7.12 +/- 1.52 in Scopus (p =
0.029). The number of citations rose over time in both databases, but
citations were more recent in Scopus, although the citation/articles
index was higher in WoS (14,47 vs 11,50). Conclusions: We found a higher
number of journals, articles, signing authors and total citations in
Scopus, but the signing authors/articles and institutions/articles
indices were higher in WoS. The CI increased annually during the study
period in both databases (the CI annual mean was higher in WoS).
Citations were higher for older articles but more recent in Scopus
(citation/articles index was higher in WoS).

Abstract:
This article presents the potential of bibliometrics as a more
functional practice in public libraries. Bibliometrics laws and models
are seen as a way of redefining and widening of the role of the library.
The news applications of bibliometrics in library practice is motivated
by ambitions to provide more complete services in public libraries, as
well as to increase the visibility and status of libraries, not the
least in relation to good management. The usage of Bibliometrics in
public libraries is also seen as a way of widening of the professional
profile of librarianship. The new applications should, however, also be
considered from the viewpoint of potential changes in how libraries are
perceived when using a monitoring function through bibliometric analyses
of research performance in addition to traditional service oriented
functions. (C) 2013 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Selection

Name confusion, Web of Science, Citation indexes, Turkish Hospitals' names, standardization problem, unification of addresses

Abstract:
Effectiveness of academia has usually been evaluated by using the number
of publications. However, indexing with natural language on citation
indexes makes evaluation process problematic for author affiliation.
Affiliation information mistakes made by authors or editors can cause
confusion during the indexing period. Consequently, visibility of the
institutions in the citation indexes may reduce, different rankings for
institutions may emerge and bibliometric studies may generate inaccurate
results. It is important to understand these standardization problems in
citation indexes to be able to fix them. The main aim of this study is
to present name confusions of author affiliations within the citation
indexes by using the example of the names of Turkish Training and
Research Hospitals (TRH). In order to achieve this, 198,687 publications
within the Web of Science, addressed in Turkey and produced between 1928
and 2009 were evaluated. The preliminary findings show that there are 65
unique TRHs which were mentioned with several different formats in the
address section of the citation indexes. All these varying affiliation
information were unified as a standard format for this study. It is
observed that the names of these hospitals cause the main confusion. For
example, there are four different "Numune TRH"s in different cities of
Turkey. In such a case, if the author does not mention the city name in
the address field, confusion becomes inevitable. In addition to that,
affiliation information mistakes generally appear in the form of wrong
spelling, abbreviation and translation mistakes. Findings of this study
would bring up aforementioned confusion and present some recommendations
to solve it. (C) 2013 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Selection

Abstract:
It can be assumed that the attention paid to the research methodology of
a particular discipline or subject field is an indicator of the salience
of the research methodology with respect to the research dynamics of the
field. The prominence of research methodology is reflected in, among
other things, publications focusing on research methodology and relevant
sub-themes. This paper reports the results of a content analysis of
abstracts of journal articles in business and management studies where
at least one author had a South African address. The sample was drawn
from the Thomson Reuter's Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Web
of Knowledge database for the period 2007 to 2011. In the content
analysis, methodological themes (i.e. quantitative, qualitative,
mono-methodological, multi-methodological) that featured in the abstract
of each publication were used as the unit of analysis, while the title
and entire abstract of the publication served as the contextual unit.
Standard reliability checks were done on the thematic coding. Against
the background of an official review of the state of Master's of
Business Administration (MBA) degrees in South Africa, this study
includes an indication of the share of business and management studies
in South African knowledge production; the salience of methodological
themes in business and management publications; specific preferences in
the application of methodology in these fields, and selected demographic
characteristics of authors. The study found, firstly, that
multiple-authored publications dominate, secondly, that there is a
preference for mono-methodological research designs and quantitative and
empirical research methods, and thirdly that international collaboration
did not meaningfully influence the choice of research designs and
methods. The paper concludes by highlighting the implications of the
findings.

Abstract:
Many bibliometric studies have been conducted to examine the factors
that influence citation frequency based on multiple regression analysis,
targeting academic papers. As for patents, on the other hand, there are
few studies in which citation frequency is explained/predicted as the
response variable. This study executed a multiple regression analysis
that explains citation frequency of patents with multiple feature values
derived from the patent data set as explanatory variables, i.e., the
numbers of inventors, classifications, pages, figures, tables, claims,
priority claims, countries for priority claims, and classifications
associated with backward citations (patents cited in the subject
patent). The data on 5,253,614 patent applications were analyzed on the
basis of the full text of the official gazette for patent applications
published in Japan between 1993 and 2007. The results suggested that the
influence of diversity of backward citations on citation frequency is
large compared to those of the other factors. (C) 2013 The Authors.

Abstract:
Objectives: To quantify and describe the characteristics of scientific
production on the teaching of nursing leadership concerning the type of
publication, year, vehicle, country, language and theme. Methods: A
descriptive and bibliometric study conducted in databases of the BVS,
using descriptors: teaching, leadership and nursing. Results: Over 37
years, we identified 73 publications, mostly found in the MEDLINE
database and consisting of original articles published in North American
journals, written in English, and dealing with teaching strategies.
Conclusions: The scientific production was sparse but constant during
the study period, authored predominantly by North Americans, and
published in scientific journals in the United States, which indicated
the necessity to develop research on the subject in Brazil.
