Abstract:
*Zipf-Mandelbrot* (ZM) model, linking the evenness and predictability of
communities (parameter gamma) to environmental diversification
(parameter beta), was fitted on a phytoplankton dataset, representing a
wide productivity spectrum characteristic of Eastern Mediterranean. To
reveal community characteristics explaining observed patterns in gamma
and beta, ZM model was also fitted on simulated assemblages generated by
three niche-based models. Parameter gamma showed a decreasing trend with
evenness in agreement with theory and related field studies. High gamma
values corresponded to phytoplankton assemblages characterized by the
presence of a dominant species, the rest being evenly distributed,
whereas low gamma was observed for even assemblages. For ZM beta with
evenness, a characteristic U-shaped relationship was observed in field
and simulated assemblages, implying that high environmental
diversification may lead to either high or low evenness. These
assemblages are described by MacArthur fraction and dominance decay
niche-based models and their only difference is the dominance of a
single species, the rest being evenly distributed. At intermediate
environmental diversification, more often encountered in the field,
phytoplankton assemblages are described by random fraction model
resulting to slightly steeper RADs. Two-way fitting approach on field
and simulated assemblages provided useful insights on both ZM model
behavior and its underlying hypotheses.

Abstract:
The large-crowned emergent tree Microberlinia bisulcata dominates rain
forest groves at Korup National Park, Cameroon, along with two
codominants, Tetraberlinia bifoliolata and T. korupensis. M. bisulcata
has a pronounced modal size frequency distribution around similar to 110
cm stem diameter: its recruitment potential is very poor. It is a
long-lived light-demanding species, one of many found in African
forests. Tetraberlinia species lack modality, are more shade tolerant,
and recruit better. All three species are ectomycorrhizal. M. bisulcata
dominates grove basal area, even though it has similar numbers of trees
(>= 50 cm stem diameter) as each of the other two species. This
situation presented a conundrum that prompted a long-term study of grove
dynamics. Enumerations of two plots (82.5 and 56.25 ha) between 1990 and
2010 showed mortality and recruitment of M. bisulcata to be very low
(both rates similar to 0.2% per year) compared with Tetraberlinia (2.4%
and 0.8% per year), and M. bisulcata grows twice as fast as the
Tetraberlinia. Ordinations indicated that these three species determined
community structure by their strong negative associations while other
species showed almost none. Ranked species abundance curves fitted the
*Zipf-Mandelbrot* model well and allowed "overdominance" of M. bisulcata
to be estimated. Spatial analysis indicated strong repulsion by clusters
of large (50 to <100 cm) and very large (>= 100 cm) M. bisulcata of
their own medium-sized (10 to <50 cm) trees and all sizes of
Tetraberlinia. This was interpreted as competition by M. bisulcata
increasing its dominance, but also inhibition of its own replacement
potential. Stem coring showed a modal age of similar to 200 years for M.
bisulcata, but with large size variation (50-150 cm). Fifty-year model
projections suggested little change in medium, decreases in large, and
increases in very large trees of M. bisulcata, accompanied by overall
decreases in medium and large trees of Tetraberlinia species.
Realistically increasing very-large-tree mortality led to grove collapse
without short-term replacement. M. bisulcata most likely depends on
climatic events to rebuild its stands: the ratio of disturbance interval
to median species' longevity is important. A new theory of transient
dominance explains how M. bisulcata may be cycling in abundance over
time and displaying nonequilibrium dynamics.

Abstract:
Emerging Emerging technologies embrace the very early stages of
socio-technological evolution. Despite their appealing nature, they have
been loosely defined and operationalized. In particular,
operationalization approaches based on bibliometric methods have often
tended to emphasize the exponential growth and the potential impacts of
emerging technologies while overlooking their inherent uncertainty and
'fluidity'. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the
operationalization of emerging technologies by presenting an approach
for quantitatively interpreting technologies of an emerging nature along
both dimensions. We do so by looking into the dynamic properties of
scientific knowledge bases in terms of their rates and directions of
change. Our approach integrates bibliometric indicators, social network
analysis and multivariate statistical methods on scientific
publications, and their citing and cited references. The empirical case
of micro/nanoelectromechanical systems technologies (MEMS/NEMS), which
embrace micro- and nano-sensors and actuators, is used. A total of
thirteen MEMS/NEMS technologies are evaluated. Overall, our results
provide a quantitative framework for discerning technological emergence
through the evaluation of the dynamics of scientific knowledge bases.
These results highlight the coupled intense patterns of growth and
cognitive fluidity characterizing emerging technologies. We also provide
a glimpse into the difficulties encountered by specific nanotechnology
fields in bringing forward nano-enabled devices. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc.

Abstract:
This article aims to explain the current state of DNA Repair studies'
global geography by focusing on the genesis of the community.
Bibliometric data is used to localize scientific activities related to
DNA Repair at the city level The keyword "DNA Repair" was introduced
first by American scientists. It started to spread after 1964 that is to
say, after P. Howard-Flanders (Yale University), P. Hanawalt (Stanford
University) and R. Setlow (Oak Ridge Laboratories) found evidence for
Excision Repair mechanisms. It was the first stage in the emergence of
an autonomous scientific community. In this article, we will try to
assess to what extent the geo-history of this scientific field is
determinant in understanding its current geography. In order to do so,
we will localize the places where the first "DNA Repair" publications
were signed fifty years ago and the following spatial diffusion process,
which led to the current geography of the field. Then, we will focus on
the evolution of the research activity of "early entrants" in relation
to the activity of "latecomers". This article is an opportunity to share
with DNA Repair scientists some research results of a dynamic field in
Science studies: spatial *scientometrics*. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All

Abstract:
Impact factors (IFs) are scores based on the frequency with which
articles in a journal have been cited in other journals during a 2-year
or 5-year period. Impact factors vary across disciplines and even within
fields because of differences in citing behaviors, types of
publications, and other factors. Nurses need to understand IFs and the
implications for them as authors, particularly in light of the small
number of nursing journals with IFs. This article describes journal IFs,
the current state of IFs for nursing journals, and considerations in
selecting a journal for submission of an article.

Abstract:
1. Species abundance distributions of moth and beetle assemblages, in
addition to beetle feeding guilds, were examined using data collected by
light traps in a cool-temperate deciduous forest at Hokkaido, Japan.
2. Four types of species abundance distributions with a continuous shift
in shape (broken stick, log-normal, power function, and
dispersal-limited multinomial) were fitted and compared, and then the
deviation of observed data from that expected for the neutral model
(dispersal-limited multinomial distribution) was tested using species
evenness and richness.
3. Significantly better fits were obtained for the neutral model than
for the other models for all assemblages and all beetle guilds. This
result implies that the better fits of the neutral model might be
characteristic of transient assemblages having an excess of rare
species.
4. The evenness of species abundance distributions for assemblages and
guilds, except for moths associated with the understorey and predatory
beetles, significantly deviated from that expected by the neutral model.
The departure of beetle guilds (detritivores, herbivores, and
xylophages) from the neutral model suggests their microhabitat
dependence.
5. The neutral model may prove to be a viable null hypothesis for
examining the species abundance distributions of insect assemblages. In
this study, we found that although stochastic dynamics appeared to have
an increasing influence on insect community assembly, there are also
complex biological processes still likely to be present.
6. The fits of the neutral model suggest that habitat connectivity and
microhabitat diversity are potentially important for conserving moth and
beetle diversity in a temperate forest.

Abstract:
This article presents the potential of bibliometrics as a more
functional practice in public libraries. Bibliometrics laws and models
are seen as a way of redefining and widening of the role of the library.
The news applications of bibliometrics in library practice is motivated
by ambitions to provide more complete services in public libraries, as
well as to increase the visibility and status of libraries, not the
least in relation to good management. The usage of Bibliometrics in
public libraries is also seen as a way of widening of the professional
profile of librarianship. The new applications should, however, also be
considered from the viewpoint of potential changes in how libraries are
perceived when using a monitoring function through bibliometric analyses
of research performance in addition to traditional service oriented
functions. (C) 2013 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Selection

IMPACT FACTORS

Abstract:
Purpose: To determine the association between language and number of
citations of ophthalmology articles published in Brazilian journals.
Methods: This study was a systematic review. Original articles were
identified by review of documents published at the two Brazilian
ophthalmology journals indexed at Science Citation Index Expanded - SCIE
["Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia (ABO)" and "Revista Brasileira de
Oftalmologia (RBO)"]. All document types ("articles" and "reviews")
listed at SCIE in English (English Group) or in Portuguese (Portuguese
Group) from January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2009 were included, except:
"editorial materials"; "corrections"; "letters"; and "biographical
items". The primary outcome was the number of citations through the end
of second year after publication date. Subgroup analysis included
likelihood of citation (cited at least once versus no citation),
journal, and year of publication.
Results: The search at the web of science revealed 382 articles [107
(28%) in the English Group and 275 (72%) in the Portuguese Group]. Of
those, 297 (77.7%) were published at the ABO and 85 (23.3%) at the RBO.
The citation counts were statistically significantly higher (P<0.001) in
the English Group (1.51 - SD 1.98-range 0 to 11) compared with the
Portuguese Group (0.57 - SD 1.06 - range 0 to 7). The likelihood
citation was statistically significant higher (P<0.001) in the English
Group (70/107 - 65.4%) compared with the Portuguese Group (89/275 -
32.7%). There were more articles published in English at the ABO (98/297
- 32.9%) than at the RBO (9/85 - 10.6%) [P<0.001]. There were no
significant difference (P=0.967) at the proportion of articles published
in English at the years 2008 (48/172 - 27.9%) and 2009 (59/210 - 28.1%).
Conclusion: The number of citations of articles published in Portuguese
at Brazilian ophthalmology journals is lower than the published in
English. The results of this study suggest that the editorial boards
should strongly encourage the authors to adopt English as the main
language in their future articles.

Abstract:
Many bibliometric studies have been conducted to examine the factors
that influence citation frequency based on multiple regression analysis,
targeting academic papers. As for patents, on the other hand, there are
few studies in which citation frequency is explained/predicted as the
response variable. This study executed a multiple regression analysis
that explains citation frequency of patents with multiple feature values
derived from the patent data set as explanatory variables, i.e., the
numbers of inventors, classifications, pages, figures, tables, claims,
priority claims, countries for priority claims, and classifications
associated with backward citations (patents cited in the subject
patent). The data on 5,253,614 patent applications were analyzed on the
basis of the full text of the official gazette for patent applications
published in Japan between 1993 and 2007. The results suggested that the
influence of diversity of backward citations on citation frequency is
large compared to those of the other factors. (C) 2013 The Authors.

Abstract:
The European Reference Index for the Humanities (ERIH) has been proposed
(and officially recognized in our country) as a European alternative to
the dominant indices that have a known Anglo-Saxon bias. The aim is to
raise the visibility of European research in the Humanities and in
various areas of the Social Sciences, in order to improve coverage of
the cultural and linguistic diversity of our continent. We analyze some
of the circumstances affecting the results of the recently updated list
of ERIH (' revised '), with special emphasis on the field of education.
The results demonstrate the need to improve the criteria for entry into
the index (completeness and quality) if ERIH is to achieve its goals.

Abstract:
This paper examines impact of gender both on publication productivity
and on patterns of scientific collaborations in social sciences in
Turkey. *Bibliographic* data on local publications in Turkey is used. It
consists of 7835 papers written by 6738 scientists. Findings suggest
that (1) there are gender differences at publication productivity,
participation, presence and contribution; that (2) there are
significantly different tendencies at keeping established co-authorship
ties for inter-gender and intra-gender pairs; that (3) there are
significant gender differences at positions of individuals in the
network structure. It is seen that while female scientists are seen to
be embedded in cliques more often than males, males are more active at
bridging different components in the network. This study exemplifies an
integrated approach to better examine role of gender in scientific
collaborations.

Abstract:
Researchers have discovered, in recent years, the advantages of modeling
complex systems using heterogeneous information networks. These networks
are comprised of heterogeneous sets of nodes and edges that better
represent the different entities and relationships often found in the
real world. Although heterogeneous networks provide a richer semantic
view of the data, the added complexity makes it difficult to directly
apply existing techniques that work well on homogeneous networks.
In this paper, we propose a graph modification process that alters an
existing heterogeneous *bibliographic* network into another network,
with the purpose of highlighting the important relations in the
*bibliographic* network. Several importance scores, some adopted from
existing work and others defined in this work, are then used to measure
the importance of links in the modified network. The link prediction
problem is studied on the modified network by implementing a random
walk-based algorithm on the network. The importance scores and the
structure of the modified graph are used to guide a random walker
towards relevant parts of the graph, i.e. towards nodes to which new
links will be created in the future. The different properties of the
proposed algorithm are evaluated experimentally on a real world
*bibliographic* network, the DBLP. Results show that the proposed method
outperforms the state-of-the-art supervised technique as well as various
approaches based on topology and node attributes.
