Abstract:
Introduction: The aim of this study was to analyze the productivity and visibility of Spanish authors in gastroenterology and hepatology between 2000 and 2009 and to compare the results with those for other countries.
Methods: The Web of Science database was used. The analysis (annual and 5-yearly) was restricted to citable documents. The bibliometric indicators used were the number of documents published, the total number of citations received, the median and interquartile range of the citations received and the Hirsch h index.
Results: We identified 82,740 documents, with an increase of 18.2% between 5-year periods. Seventeen countries published more than 1,000 documents in the decade and received more than 20,000 citations. A total of 14.5% of the documents were international collaborations (20.6% of all citations) and 37.3% were published in journals in the first quartile (66.3% of all citations). The median number of citations received by all the publications was 9 (interquartile range: 3-21) and their h index was 246. Spain ranked ninth for the number of documents and eighth for citations received and for the h index. The countries showing the greatest increase in the percentage of citations contributing to the world total were Canada and Spain, with an increase between 5-yearly periods of 1.16% and 0.95%, respectively.
Conclusions: From 2000 to 2009, the production of Spanish authors in gastroenterology and hepatology was high, achieving a notable position in the total number of citations received. (C) 2012 Elsevier Espana, S.L. and AEEH y AEG. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: The qualitative and quantitative scientific output of Brazilian dermatologists in journals of high impact factor is little known.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the scientific output of dermatologists from Brazilian institutions in journals of high impact factor.
METHODS: The five journals with the highest impact factor in dermatology were analyzed. All articles produced from Brazilian institutions between 1986 and 2010 were compiled and the following aspects were analyzed: position of Brazilian researchers in the list of authors, selected theme, experimental design, studied disease, area of interest and year of publication.
RESULTS: Seventy-four articles written with the participation of Brazilian dermatologists have been identified. Upon grouping the articles in five-year periods, an important increase was observed in the Brazilian production from the year 2006 onwards. The dermatologists were placed as second authors in the majority of cases (53.66%). According to the selected theme to be studied, the majority of the articles had a laboratory focus (45.95%). The majority of the articles reported cross-sectional studies or non-controlled clinical trials (both at 17.57%), and pemphigus foliaceus was the most studied disease (29.73%).
CONCLUSION: The increase in the number of publications by Brazilian dermatologists over the last years is encouraging, but it is still small in comparison to the total number of articles published in these five periodicals.

Abstract:
The two major functions of a scientific publishing system are to provide access to and evaluation of scientific papers. While open access (OA) is becoming a reality, open evaluation (OE), the other side of the coin, has received less attention. Evaluation steers the attention of the scientific community and thus the very course of science. It also influences the use of scientific findings in public policy. The current system of scientific publishing provides only journal prestige as an indication of the quality of new papers and relies on a non-transparent and noisy pre-publication peer-review process, which delays publication by many months on average. Here I propose on OE system, in which papers are evaluated post-publication in an ongoing fashion by means of open peer review and rating. Through signed ratings and reviews, scientists steer the attention of their field and build their reputation. Reviewers are motivated to be objective, because low-quality of self-serving s!
igned evaluations will negatively impact their reputation. A core feature of this proposal is a division of powers between the accumulation of evaluative evidence and the analysis of this evidence by paper evaluation functions (PEFs). PEFs can be freely defined by individuals or groups (e.g., scientific societies) and provide a plurality of perspectives on the scientific literature. Simple PEFs will use average of ratings, weighting reviewers (e.g., by H-index), and rating scales (e.g., by relevance to a decision process) in different ways. Complex PEFs will use advanced statistical techniques to infer the quality of a paper. Papers with initially promising ratings will be more deeply evaluated. The continual refinement of PEFs in response to attempts by individuals to influence evaluations in their own favor will make the system ungameable. OA and OE together have the power to revolutionize scientific publishing and usher in a new culture of transparency, constructive crit!
 icism, and collaboration.

Abstract:
A Kuhnian approach to research assessment requires us to consider that the important scientific breakthroughs that drive scientific progress are infrequent and that the progress of science does not depend on normal research. Consequently, indicators of research performance based on the total number of papers do not accurately measure scientific progress. Similarly, those universities with the best reputations in terms of scientific progress differ widely from other universities in terms of the scale of investments made in research and in the higher concentrations of outstanding scientists present, but less so in terms of the total number of papers or citations. This study argues that indicators for the 1% high-citation tail of the citation distribution reveal the contribution of universities to the progress of science and provide quantifiable justification for the large investments in research made by elite research universities. In this tail, which follows a power low, the !
number of the less frequent and highly cited important breakthroughs can be predicted from the frequencies of papers in the upper part of the tail. This study quantifies the false impression of excellence produced by multinational papers, and by other types of papers that do not contribute to the progress of science. Many of these papers are concentrated in and dominate lists of highly cited papers, especially in lower-ranked universities. The h-index obscures the differences between higher- and lower-ranked universities because the proportion of h-core papers in the 1% high-citation tail is not proportional to the value of the h-index.

Abstract:
In academia, publication productivity, defined as the number of peer-reviewed articles published and the frequency of citations, is a primary factor in the assessment of tenure and promotion. One of the most cited gender differences in academia is the "productivity puzzle," which suggests that women publish less than men, thereby affecting every aspect of a woman's academic career. Peer-reviewed articles published in the Annals of the Association of American Geographers (Annals) and The Professional Geographer (PG) between 1995 and 2006, and in four subdisciplinary journals between 2005 and 2009, as well as citation reports, were used to explore whether gender differences are present in publication productivity. Gender differences were evident in the proportion of women authors, the frequency of collaboration, and the number of citations across a broad range of prestigious geographic journals. For all journals studied, women were underrepresented, especially in the authorshi!
p positions that equate to notions of respect and merit. Although the number of collaborative articles increased during the study period, single-authored papers are the dominant mode of publication for both men and women for most geographic journals. The authorship patterns for frequently cited articles generally mirror those for all articles. Because the frequency of collaborative publication was high for women, the dual trends of a general increase in publication collaboration and increasing participation of women in academic geography bodes well for increased female productivity as it relates to publishing. Nevertheless, it is important to note that, currently, males as lead or single authors represent the predominant voice of geography within the journals examined in this study.

ABSTRACT: Objective: In recent years, significant growth has been
seen in the field of emergency medicine. However, the national
productivity to the field of emergency medicine remains unknown. This
study aimed to reveal the national contributions in the field of
emergency medicine.

Methods: Articles published in 13 highly cited journals in emergency
medicine in 2006 to 2010 were retrieved from PubMed and Science Citation
Index. The number of total articles, the per-capita numbers, impact
factors (IFs), and citations were tabulated to assess the contribution of
different countries.

Results: A total number of 9775 articles were published in the 13
journals from 2006 to 2010 worldwide. West Europe, North America, and
East Asia were the most productive regions. High-income countries
published 87.9% of the total articles. United States published the most
number of articles in 2006 to 2010 (4523/9775, or 46.3%), followed by
United Kingdom, Australia, China, and Canada. Besides, United States also
had the highest total IFs (8729.73) and total citations (22 117). When
normalized to population size, Australia had the highest number of
articles per million persons (26.00). Germany had the highest mean IF
(2.27) and mean citations (6.87).

Conclusions: United States is the most productive country in the field of
emergency medicine. (c) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT: The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise in the UK involved
the peer review of over 12,500 research outputs in Business and
Management, of which 92% were journal articles. Each output was graded on
a 4-point scale from "world leading" to "national" with a fifth point
being unclassified. These grades were accumulated for each department to
provide an overall quality profile in terms of the proportions of its
outputs in each category. The assessments of individual papers were not
made public but the papers submitted by each department were. This data
provides a major opportunity for addressing issues of concern about the
evaluation of research and the effects of journal rankings, as well as
the possibility of reconstructing the judgements made by the Panel about
journal quality. Given the submission details and the resulting grade
profile for each department, we have used linear programming to produce
the best estimate of the grades awarded to papers from each journal that
had more than three entries. This provides both a grade profile for each
journal and a single quality estimate. The results are shown to have good
validity in comparison with other journal rankings. Apart from providing
a ranking of 700 journals based on the RAE results, the paper is also
able to shed light on issues such as the accuracy and coverage of the ABS
ranking; the degree of selectivity of submissions; the dispersion of
grades for a journal; and differences between different subject areas.

ABSTRACT: Previous studies have repeatedly demonstrated that the
relevance of a citing document is related to the number of times with
which the source document is cited. Despite the ease with which
electronic documents would permit the incorporation of this information
into citation-based document search and retrieval systems, the
possibilities of repeated citations remain untapped. Part of this under-
utilization may be due to the fact that very little is known regarding
the pattern of repeated citations in scholarly literature or how this
pattern may vary as a function of journal, academic discipline or self-
citation. The current research addresses these unanswered questions in
order to facilitate the future incorporation of repeated citation
information into document search and retrieval systems. Using data mining
of electronic texts, the citation characteristics of nine different
journals, covering the three different academic fields (economics,
computing, and medicine & biology), were characterized. It was found that
the frequency (f) with which a reference is cited Nor more times within a
document is consistent across the sampled journals and academic fields.
Self-citation causes an increase in frequency, and this effect becomes
more pronounced for large N. The objectivity, automatability, and
insensitivity of repeated citations to journal and discipline, present
powerful opportunities for improving citation-based document search. (C)

ABSTRACT: The status and activity of technological development in
the field of biofuel and biohydrogen energy from the year 2000-2011 were
investigated utilizing patent bibliometric analysis. Based on the
reports, the current status indicates that the key technologies for
biofuel energy have reached technological maturity in the United States.
However, the principal or predominant technologies for biohydrogen energy
need a great deal of work to accelerate the development of biohydrogen
technology. In addition, three important subjects were found from
citation techniques, which are related to biodiesel fuel, biological fuel
cell, and the biohydrogen. These patents described that the focus of key
techniques of energy production should be established towards low energy
demand technologies, and biohydrogen was found to be a potential
candidate of the future. Finally, this proposed model can be applied to
all high-technology cases, and particularly to green energy field.

ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVES We sought a method for any reader to quantify
the limit, imposed by variability, to sustainably observable R-2 between
any baseline predictor and response marker. We then apply this to
echocardiographic measurements of mechanical dyssynchrony and response.

BACKGROUND Can mechanical dyssynchrony markers strongly predict
ventricular remodeling by biventricular pacing (cardiac resynchronization
therapy)?

METHODS First, we established the mathematical depression of observable R-
2 arising from: 1) spontaneous variability of response markers; and 2)
test-retest variability of dyssynchrony measurements. Second, we
contrasted published R-2 values between externally monitored randomized
controlled trials and highly skilled single-center studies (HSSCSs).

RESULTS Inherent variability of response markers causes a contraction
factor in R-2 of 0.48 (change in left ventricular ejection fraction
[Delta LVEF]), 0.50 (change in end-systolic volume [Delta ESV]), and 0.40
(change in end-diastolic volume [Delta EDV]). Simultaneously, inherent
variability of mechanical dyssynchrony markers causes a contraction
factor of between 0.16 and 0.92 (average, 0.6). Therefore the combined
contraction factor, that is, limit on sustainably observable R-2 between
mechanical dyssynchrony markers and response, is similar to 0.29 (Delta
LVEF), similar to 0.24 (Delta ESV), and similar to 0.30 (Delta EDV). Many
R-2 values published in HSSCSs exceeded these mathematical limits; none
in externally monitored trials did so. Overall, HSSCSs overestimate R-2
by 5- to 20-fold (p = 0.002). Absence of bias-resistance features in
study design (formal enrollment and blinded measurements) was associated
with more overstatement of R-2.

CONCLUSIONS Reports of R-2 > 0.2 in response prediction arose exclusively
from studies without formally documented enrollment and blinding. The
HSSCS approach overestimates R-2 values, frequently breaching the
mathematical ceiling on sustainably observable R-2, which is far below
1.0, and can easily be calculated by readers using formulas presented
here. Community awareness of this low ceiling may help resist future
claims. Reliable individualized response prediction, using methods
originally designed for group-mean effects, may never be possible because
it has 2 currently unavailable and perhaps impossible prerequisites: 1)
excellent blinded test-retest reproducibility of dyssynchrony; and 2)
response markers reproducible over time within nonintervened individuals.
Dispassionate evaluation, and improvement, of test-retest reproducibility
is required before any further claims of strong prediction. Prediction
studies should be designed to resist bias. (J Am Coll Cardiol Img 2012;

and number of meanings can also be derived from term x document analysis.
This supports the idea put forward by Ding that Zipfian distributions and
SVD carry similar hidden (latent) semantics.

ABSTRACT: To capture a competitor's innovation performance, both in
terms of its productivity and impact, we propose to characterize its
patent portfolio, including both cited and un-cited patents, by a pair of
numbers. This pair of numbers, one related to the productivity and the
other to the impact of the competitor, is obtained from the centroid of a
so-called h-complement area of the citation distribution of the
competitor's portfolio. As such, a large number of competitors'
innovation performance embodied in their portfolios can be simultaneously
captured and panoramically observed in a two-dimensional coordinate
system. In addition to its simplicity and effectiveness, this approach
provides us significant insight into where performance difference among
these competitors lies, and allows us to track their performance
evolution over time.

ABSTRACT: The paper discuss fundamentals of semantic evaluation of
information retrieval systems. Semantic evaluation is understood in two
ways. Semantic evaluation sensu strict consists of automatic global
methods of information retrieval evaluation which are based on knowledge
representation systems. Semantic evaluation sensu largo includes also
evaluation of retrieved results presented using new methods and comparing
them to previously used which evaluated unordered set of documents or
lists of ranked documents. Semantic information retrieval methods can be
treated as storing meaning of words which are basic building blocks of
retrieved texts. In the paper, ontologies are taken as,systems which
represent knowledge and meaning. Ontologies serve as a basis for semantic
modeling of information needs, which are modeled as families of concepts.
Semantic modeling depends also on algorithmic methods of assigning
concepts to documents. Some algebraic and partially ordered set methods
in semantic modeling are proposed leading to different types of semantic
modeling. Then semantic value of a document is discussed, it is
relativized to a family of concepts and essentially depends on the used
ontology. The paper focuses on sematic relevance of documents, both
binary and graded, together with semantic ranking of documents. Various
types of semantic value and semantic relevance are proposed and also some
semantic versions of information retrieval evaluation measures are given.

ABSTRACT: Technology has evolved through the dynamic process of
knowledge transfer. The exploration of technological evolution from a
quantitative perspective has often been mentioned in the intellectual
pursuit. The study applies bibliometric method to the articles published
in the field of mechanism and machine theory (MMT). Afterward we analyzed
the trends of MMT articles during the 30 years. We found that the ratios
of the MMT papers in each journal have a trend of growth and have been
centered on the certain two magazines. The articles of MMT exhibit a
trend of growth. The USA, China and Canada are the major countries which
frequently published the papers in the field of MMT and have significant
performance in citations. China has rapidly grown in the quantity and the
ratios of papers. In addition, the top 10 researchers with the highest h-
index in the field of MMT are primarily affiliated with institutions in
English-spoken countries, trumping the other countries.
