Abstract:
The quality of presentations at medical conferences is of major importance. The publication rate (PR) following congress presentation is an indicator of the extent and quality of a scientific society's activity. The purpose of this study was to investigate publication rates in the Spine Society of Europe (SSE), compare them with the results for American spine societies, and determine factors affecting publication.
All 839 abstracts of podium and poster presentations at SSE congresses held in 2000-2003 were investigated. PRs in peer-reviewed journals within a period of 5 years were assessed. Subgroup analyses were performed for different study types. The consistency of abstracts with publications was also analyzed.
The overall PR was 37.8%, with a mean of 17.7 +/- A 15.7 months between congress and publication and a mean *impact factor* of 1.8 +/- A 1.0 at the time of publication. Comparatively high PRs were found for podium presentations versus posters, studies with higher versus lower levels of evidence, experimental versus clinical studies, prospective versus retrospective studies, randomized versus nonrandomized studies, studies reporting significant main results versus those without, and multicenter studies versus single-center studies. Biomechanical studies also achieved high PRs.
The PR was similar to that of NASS (40%) and only slightly inferior to that of SRS (47%) and ISSLS (45%). This shows the high quality of presentations at SSE congresses. The fate of unpublished abstracts is worth further consideration. It is questionable whether it is acceptable to cite abstracts that have not passed a journal's peer-review process and to implement their results in clinical practice.

Abstract:
Spine-related research has evolved dramatically during the last century. Significant contributions have been made by thousands of authors. A citation rank list has historically been used within a particular field to measure the importance of an article. The purpose of this article is to report on the 100 most cited articles in the field of spine.
Science Citation Index Expanded was searched for citations in 27 different journals (as of 30 November 2010) chosen based on the relevance for all cited spine publications. The top 100 most cited articles were identified. Important information such as journal, date, country of origin, author, subspecialty, and level of evidence (for clinical research) were compiled.
The top 100 publications ranged from 1,695 to 240 citations. Fifty-three articles were of the lumbar, 17 were of the thoracolumbar, and 15 of the cervical spine. Eighty-one of the articles were clinical and 19 were basic science in nature. Level of evidence varied for the clinical papers, however, was most commonly level IV (34 of 81 articles). Notably, the 1990-1999 decade was the most productive period with 43 of the top 100 articles published during this time.
Identification of the most cited articles within the field of spine recognizes some of the most important contributions in the peer-reviewed literature. Current investigators may utilize the aspects of their work to guide and direct future spine-related research.

*Impact factor* trends for general medical journals: non-English-language journals are lagging behind

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: The *impact factor* (IF) is a common citation metric used for evaluating and comparing scientific journals within a certain field. Previous studies have shown that IFs are increasing. However, rates may depend on journal publication language.
The aim of this study was to determine IF values and trends for general medical journals, comparing non-English-language with English-language journals.
METHODS: For all journals categorised as "medicine, general and internal" (n = 150) in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR), publication language, country of origin and IFs for the last 10 years were recorded (2001-2010). Data were classified, analysed descriptively and compared using non-parametric tests.
RESULTS: From 2001 to 2010, IFs increased for English-language and non-English-language journals (p <0.001). During the 10-year study period, IFs were higher for English-language than for non-English-language journals (p <0.001).
The proportion of non-English-language journals included in the JCR was 12.2% in 2001 and 18.0% in 2010 (p =0.28).
INTERPRETATION: From 2001 to 2010, IFs increased significantly for English-language and non-English-language journals. When comparing IF values year-by-year (2001-2010), IFs were significantly higher for English-language than for non-English-language journals.
In an international scientific community with English as the universal language of science, non-English-language journals should consider changing publication language, and adopt either a bi- or a monolingual approach. Publishing in English will increase citation counts and thus IFs, but, more importantly, scientific findings will be accessible to a much wider audience.

Abstract:
Context: Because positive biomedical observations are more often published than those reporting no effect, initial observations are often refuted or attenuated by subsequent studies.
Objective: To determine whether newspapers preferentially report on initial findings and whether they also report on subsequent studies.
Methods: We focused on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Using Factiva and PubMed databases, we identified 47 scientific publications on ADHD published in the 1990s and soon echoed by 347 newspapers articles. We selected the ten most echoed publications and collected all their relevant subsequent studies until 2011. We checked whether findings reported in each "top 10" publication were consistent with previous and subsequent observations. We also compared the newspaper coverage of the "top 10" publications to that of their related scientific studies.
Results: Seven of the "top 10" publications were initial studies and the conclusions in six of them were either refuted or strongly attenuated subsequently. The seventh was not confirmed or refuted, but its main conclusion appears unlikely. Among the three "top 10" that were not initial studies, two were confirmed subsequently and the third was attenuated. The newspaper coverage of the "top 10" publications (223 articles) was much larger than that of the 67 related studies (57 articles). Moreover, only one of the latter newspaper articles reported that the corresponding "top 10" finding had been attenuated. The average *impact factor* of the scientific journals publishing studies echoed by newspapers (17.1 n = 56) was higher (p < 0.0001) than that corresponding to related publications that were not echoed (6.4 n = 56).
Conclusion: Because newspapers preferentially echo initial ADHD findings appearing in prominent journals, they report on uncertain findings that are often refuted or attenuated by subsequent studies. If this media reporting bias generalizes to health sciences, it represents a major cause of distortion in health science communication.

Abstract:
Background Despite the increasing prevalence of celiac disease (CD), the rate of diagnosis remains low. This may be related to the lack of research and publications on CD compared with other gastrointestinal conditions. We hypothesized that CD publications are underrepresented as compared with other gastrointestinal illnesses, and are particularly underrepresented in the USA.
Goal To explore the rate of CD publication output, comparing it with other gastrointestinal conditions, and to assess for changes over time.
Study We used an iterative search process to identify all articles in PubMed from 1980 to 2009, and compared the number of publications featuring CD to Crohn's disease and Helicobacter pylori. We analyzed CD publication output with respect to its degree of diffusion among journals and authors, and assessed for an association between economic parameters and output.
Results The number of publications has increased steadily since 1980, with acceleration in the rate of increase beginning in 1995; this trend was also observed in the number of publications in Crohn's disease, whereas the number of publications for H. pylori has begun to decline. The 10 journals with the largest number of Crohn's disease publications were responsible for 29% of all Crohn's disease research output in 1995-1999 and 30% in 2005-2009. In contrast, the top 10 CD journals were responsible for 34% of CD output in 1995-1999, but only 25% in 2005-2009 (P<0.0001). Publication output per nation was moderately associated with gross domestic product (r=0.59, P<0.0001).
Conclusion The number of publications in CD is increasing, out of proportion to the overall growth of the peer-reviewed medical literature. CD publications are spread throughout a larger number of journals, but are more dominated by high-volume authors. Economic factors are associated with national contributions to the world literature in CD. Abstract:
To solve grey *impact factor* in matrix series, an improved Partial Grey Model based on PGM(1,3), called PGM(1,3+m(2)), is proposed here. Meanwhile, partial grey derivative is introduced. Finally, an example is used to illustrate that PGM(1,3+m(2)) is superior to the existing grey models when simulating or predicting the multi-stream or long data series.
