Abstract:
In this paper, an artificial neural network (ANN)-based methodology is proposed to determine the probability of inter-arrival time (IAT) of main shock of six broad seismic regions of India. Initially, classical methodology using exponential distribution is applied to IAT of earthquake events computed from earthquake catalog data. From the goodness-of-fit test results, it has been found that exponential distribution is not adequate. In this paper, a more efficient ANN-based methodology is proposed, and two ANN models are developed to determine the probability of IAT of earthquake events for a specified region, specified magnitude range or magnitude greater than the specified value. The performance of ANN models developed is validated with number of examples and found to predict the probability with minimal error compared to exponential distribution model. The methodology developed can be applied to any other region with the database of the respective regions.

Abstract:
An evaluation exercise was performed involving 313 papers of research staff (66 persons) of the Deutsche Rheuma-Forschungszentrum (DRFZ) published in 2004-2008. The records and citations to them were retrieved from the Web of Science (Thomson Reuters) in March 2010. The authors compared productivity and citedness of "group leaders" vs. "regular scientists", of "male scientists" vs. "female scientists" using citation-based indexes. It was found that "group leaders" are more prolific and cited more often than "regular scientists", the same is true considering "male" vs. "female scientists". The greatest contrast is observed between "female leaders" and "female regular scientists". The above mentioned differences are significant in indexes related to the number of papers, while values of indexes characterizing the quality of papers (average citation rate per paper and similar indexes) are not substantially different among the groups compared. The mean value of percentile rank i!
ndex for all the 313 papers is 58.5, which is significantly higher than the global mean value of about 50. This fact is evidence of a higher citation status, on average, of the publications from the DRFZ.

ABSTRACT: Purpose

Clinicians may read only the abstract of an article to keep abreast of
newly published randomized controlled trials (RCTs). However,
discordances have been noticed in summary conclusions in the abstracts
and the main body of some articles. This article evaluated such
discordances in detail.

Methods

RCTs of systemic therapy for lung cancer published between 2004 and 2009
were considered. Conclusions in the body of the articles and those in the
abstracts were graded by using a 7-point Likert scale; 1 for strong
endorsement of the control arm, 4 for a neutral statement, and 7 for
strong endorsement of the experimental arm. Conclusions were classified
as discordant if the difference in scores was >= 2. chi(2) tests and
logistic regression were used to identify factors associated with
discordance.

Results

>From among 114 eligible RCTs identified (90 for non-small-cell and 24 for
small-cell lung cancer), 11 (10%) articles presented discordant
conclusions in the abstract and in the body of the articles. Discordance
was most common when the experimental arm was strongly supported in the
abstract but not in the body of the article (nine of 11; 82%); however,
the converse was much less common (two of 11; 18%; P < .001). Intraclass
correlations for the two reviewers were >= 0.9. The discordances were
found to be independent of trial-related factors.

Conclusion

Conclusive statements in the abstract can differ from those in the full
text. Clinicians should use caution when they consider making changes in
their practice on the basis of reading only the abstract of a published
RCT. J Clin Oncol 30:3552-3557. (C) 2012 by American Society of Clinical

ABSTRACT: Background Despite the increasing prevalence of celiac
disease (CD), the rate of diagnosis remains low. This may be related to
the lack of research and publications on CD compared with other
gastrointestinal conditions. We hypothesized that CD publications are
underrepresented as compared with other gastrointestinal illnesses, and
are particularly underrepresented in the USA.

Goal To explore the rate of CD publication output, comparing it with
other gastrointestinal conditions, and to assess for changes over time.

Study We used an iterative search process to identify all articles in
PubMed from 1980 to 2009, and compared the number of publications
featuring CD to Crohn's disease and Helicobacter pylori. We analyzed CD
publication output with respect to its degree of diffusion among journals
and authors, and assessed for an association between economic parameters
and output.

Results The number of publications has increased steadily since 1980,
with acceleration in the rate of increase beginning in 1995; this trend
was also observed in the number of publications in Crohn's disease,
whereas the number of publications for H. pylori has begun to decline.
The 10 journals with the largest number of Crohn's disease publications
were responsible for 29% of all Crohn's disease research output in 1995-
1999 and 30% in 2005-2009. In contrast, the top 10 CD journals were
responsible for 34% of CD output in 1995-1999, but only 25% in 2005-2009
(P<0.0001). Publication output per nation was moderately associated with
gross domestic product (r=0.59, P<0.0001).

Conclusion The number of publications in CD is increasing, out of
proportion to the overall growth of the peer-reviewed medical literature.
CD publications are spread throughout a larger number of journals, but
are more dominated by high-volume authors. Economic factors are
associated with national contributions to the world literature in CD. Eur

ABSTRACT: In an example of Enlightenment 'engaged research' and
public intellectual practice, Euler established the basis of topology and
graph theory through his solution to the puzzle of whether a stroll
around the seven bridges of 18th-century Konigsberg (Kaliningrad) was
possible without having to cross any given bridge twice. This 'Manifesto'
argues that, born in a form of cultural studies, topology offers 21st-
century researchers a model for mapping the dynamics of time as well as
space, allowing the rigorous description of events, situations, changing
cultural formations and social spatializations. Law and Mol's network
spaces, Serre's folded time, Massey's 'power geometries', Lefebvre's
'production of space' and 'rhythmanalysis' can be developed through a
cultural topological sensitivity that allows time to be understood as not
only progressive but cyclical, relationships and the 'reach' of power can
be understood through 'knots', and a topology of experience to model the
'plushness of the Real' via extra- and over-dimensioned time-spaces that
capture nuance while drawing on systematic conceptual resources.

ABSTRACT: Spine-related research has evolved dramatically during
the last century. Significant contributions have been made by thousands
of authors. A citation rank list has historically been used within a
particular field to measure the importance of an article. The purpose of
this article is to report on the 100 most cited articles in the field of
spine.

Science Citation Index Expanded was searched for citations in 27
different journals (as of 30 November 2010) chosen based on the relevance
for all cited spine publications. The top 100 most cited articles were
identified. Important information such as journal, date, country of
origin, author, subspecialty, and level of evidence (for clinical
research) were compiled.

The top 100 publications ranged from 1,695 to 240 citations. Fifty-three
articles were of the lumbar, 17 were of the thoracolumbar, and 15 of the
cervical spine. Eighty-one of the articles were clinical and 19 were
basic science in nature. Level of evidence varied for the clinical
papers, however, was most commonly level IV (34 of 81 articles). Notably,
the 1990-1999 decade was the most productive period with 43 of the top
100 articles published during this time.

Identification of the most cited articles within the field of spine
recognizes some of the most important contributions in the peer-reviewed
literature. Current investigators may utilize the aspects of their work
to guide and direct future spine-related research.

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: The impact factor (IF) is a common citation
metric used for evaluating and comparing scientific journals within a
certain field. Previous studies have shown that IFs are increasing.
However, rates may depend on journal publication language.

The aim of this study was to determine IF values and trends for general
medical journals, comparing non-English-language with English-language
journals.

METHODS: For all journals categorised as "medicine, general and internal"
(n = 150) in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR), publication language,
country of origin and IFs for the last 10 years were recorded (2001-
2010). Data were classified, analysed descriptively and compared using
non-parametric tests.

RESULTS: From 2001 to 2010, IFs increased for English-language and non-
English-language journals (p <0.001). During the 10-year study period,
IFs were higher for English-language than for non-English-language
journals (p <0.001).

The proportion of non-English-language journals included in the JCR was
12.2% in 2001 and 18.0% in 2010 (p =0.28).

INTERPRETATION: From 2001 to 2010, IFs increased significantly for
English-language and non-English-language journals. When comparing IF
values year-by-year (2001-2010), IFs were significantly higher for
English-language than for non-English-language journals.

In an international scientific community with English as the universal
language of science, non-English-language journals should consider
changing publication language, and adopt either a bi- or a monolingual
approach. Publishing in English will increase citation counts and thus
IFs, but, more importantly, scientific findings will be accessible to a
much wider audience.

ABSTRACT: According to the link relative ratio, stationarity and
cointegration relationship between the variables, this paper makes the
unit root test(URT) and Granger causality test(GRT) of cointegration
causality between the resource inflation rate and its main factors from
1991 to 2009 just like China's money supply(M-2), total final consumption
expenditure, total investment in fixed assets, national average wage,
total imports and exports. Then the paper makes a conclusion: there is a
long-term equilibrium relationship between these six factors and resource
price index. Meanwhile China's money supply(M-2), total final consumption
expenditure and average wage show a dynamic positive influence on the
resource inflation rate, there is also a negative interaction effect with
long-term stability and none contradiction between investment in fixed
assets and resources price index, import and export volume have a
relatively weak influence on the resource price index then. The above
conclusions can be a stabilizing and scientific effect on policy
decisions for inhibition of resource prices.

ABSTRACT: In recent years, with the widespread use of e-commerce
and survey research, web surveys have developed rapidly. Based on the
realistic background of rapid development of Chinese e-commerce, this
paper gave a bibliometric analysis of domestic relevant articles on web
surveys from January, 2005 to October, 2010 on annual distribution of
articles, frequency condition, research subjects and methods, and
revealed the new trends and changes in this area. It summarized Mainland
China research condition on web surveys in nearly 6 years by comparing
domestic research with foreign research. The result shows that only few
researchers devote to web surveys; annual articles are fewer and they are
vulnerable to the impact of domestic and international environment; the
quality of articles is poor, and download frequency and citation
frequency are low; studies are relatively simple, and interdisciplinary
researches are less; quantitative and empirical studies are little, and
research methods are not scientific and standardized. Finally, according
to the conclusion this paper proposed practical suggestions to provide
reference to the future domestic researches of web surveys.
