ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to describe the patterns
of peer-reviewed general radiology publication rates with reference to
deaneries in the UK. This was a retrospective bibliometric analysis of
publications in the six highest cited general radiology journals.
Publications were identified using a manual search in PubMed between 2005
and 2009. Publications originating from UK radiology departments were
identified and subcategorised into primary institution of origin, deanery
and publication type. The total number of radiology trainees in each
deanery was obtained from the General Medical Council. 913 publications
were included in the study. Original papers constituted 48.7% (n=445),
review articles 30.3% (n=277) and case reports 17.4% (n=159). The median
number of publications in each deanery was 27 [interquartile range (IQR)
11-60], and the median number of publications per trainee was 0.49 (IQR
0.31-0.88). The largest proportion of publications came from the London
deanery (n=354, 38.8%), followed by Eastern 86 (9.4%), Oxford and
Yorkshire 70 (7.7% each). Relative to the number of trainees within each
deanery, Oxford had the highest number of publications per trainee
(1.78), followed by East Midlands (1.5), London (1.25) and Eastern
(0.99). There was a significantly higher publication rate for those
deaneries with academic radiologists (p<0.0001). There is a marked
difference in the volume of published work in the general radiology
literature among UK deaneries, even accounting for differences in the
number of trainees. This probably means that opportunities for training
in research are similarly non-uniform.

ABSTRACT: Objective: To present an international view of the
scientific production in the field of primary care in the period 1985-
2004.

Design: Retrospective, observational study. Bibliometric analysis.

Location: Medline database. WebSPIRS access through version 4.3. We
analysed two periods: 2000-2004 (cross-sectional) and 1985-2004
(developmental). Search based on "MeSH Major" with descriptors: Primary
Care or Primary Health Care, Family Practice, Family Physicians, Nurse
Practitioners, and Entry Terms associated with these.

Key Measures: We analysed the bibliometric indicators of production,
circulation, dispersion, and visibility.

Results: In 2000-2004, published 20911 articles were published, 0.73% of
total production. There was a growth rate (1985-2004) of 221%, which was
2.4 times more than average. Transience rate was 83.17%. The English
language is predominant (88.81%) over 34 languages, with Spanish being
the next (2.6%). Sixteen countries produce 95.67% of the articles. Spain
occupies the 7th place. Universities (52%) are the most productive
institutions. There are 1074 different journals with the 10 most
productive being: Br J Gen Pract, Adv Nurse Pract, Aust Fam Physician,
Fam Pract, Fam Med, BMJ, Aten Primary Health Serv J, Can Fam Physician, J
Fam Pract. The proportion of trials (5.43%) in PC is similar to other
disciplines and has increased by 453% (1985-2004).

Conclusions: The production of Primary care is about 1% of the total
scientific output, with a noticeable and higher than average growth over
20 years. The proportion of clinical trials is similar to other
disciplines. Although Anglo-Saxon countries and journals are the highest
producers, Spain and the journal ATEN PRIMARIA is among those
highlighted. (C) 2011 Elsevier Espana, S.L. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT: The journal impact factor (JIF), and how best to rate the
performance of a journal and the articles they contain, are areas of
great debate. The aim of this paper was to assess various ranking methods
of journal quality for mental health nursing journals, and to list the
top 10 articles that have received the most number of citations to date.
Seven mental health nursing journals were chosen for the analysis of
citations they received in 2010, as well as their current impact factors
from two sources, and other data for ranking purposes. There was very
little difference in the top four mental health nursing journals and
their overall rankings when combining various bibliometric indicators.
That said, the International Journal of Mental Health Nursing is
currently the highest ranked mental health nursing journal based on JIF,
but publishes fewer articles per year compared to other journals.
Overall, very few articles received 50 or more citations. This study
shows that researchers need to consider more than one ranking method when
deciding where to send or publish their research.

ABSTRACT: Objective: To conduct a bibliometric analysis of eating
disorder journals to guide journal readers and researchers when
submitting their manuscripts.

Method: Several indices were used to compare journal impact and citations
of articles appearing between 1996 and 2010 in six eating disorders
journals and six leading general psychiatry journals.

Results: The International Journal of Eating Disorders (IJED) had the
highest journal impact factor (JIF, 2.278) of the six eating disorders'
journals. The general psychiatry journals had higher JIFs and received
more citations per eating disorder article than the specialized journals.
However, IJED published the highest number of eating disorder articles
between 1996 and 2010, and 35 of these articles received at least 100
citations.

Discussion: Using the JIF alone to decide where to submit a manuscript is
a poor strategy, as this does not take into consideration the impact an
article can have within the eating disorder's field over time. (c) 2012

ABSTRACT: Purpose: This study compares the articles cited in
CINAHL, Scopus, Web of Science (WOS), and Google Scholar and the h-index
ratings provided by Scopus, WOS, and Google Scholar.

Methods: The publications of 30 College of Nursing faculty at a large
urban university were examined. Searches by author name were executed in
Scopus, WOS, and POP (Publish or Perish, which searches Google Scholar),
and the h-index for each author from each database was recorded. In
addition, the citing articles of their published articles were imported
into a bibliographic management program. This data was used to determine
an aggregated h-index for each author.

Results: Scopus, WOS, and Google Scholar provided different h-index
ratings for authors and each database found unique and duplicate citing
references.

Conclusions: More than one tool should be used to calculate the h-index
for nursing faculty because one tool alone cannot be relied on to provide
a thorough assessment of a researcher's impact. If researchers are
interested in a comprehensive h-index, they should aggregate the citing
references located by WOS and Scopus. Because h-index rankings differ
among databases, comparisons between researchers should be done only
within a specified database. Cite this article: De Groote, S.L., &

ABSTRACT: Objective. To determine yearly (phase 1) and cumulative
(phase 2) publication records of pharmaceutical science faculty members
at research-intensive colleges and schools of pharmacy.

Methods. The publication records of pharmaceutical science faculty
members at research-intensive colleges and schools of pharmacy were
searched on Web of Science. Fifty colleges and schools of pharmacy were
randomly chosen for a search of 1,042 individual faculty members'
publications per year from 2005 to 2009. A stratified random sample of
120 faculty members also was chosen, and cumulative publication counts
were recorded and bibliometric indices calculated.

Results. The median number of publications per year was 2 (range, 0-34).
Overall, 22% of faculty members had no publications in any given year,
but the number was highly variable depending on the faculty members'
colleges or schools of pharmacy. Bibliometric indices were higher for
medicinal chemistry and pharmaceutics, with pharmacology ranking third
and social and administrative sciences fourth. Higher bibliometric
indices were also observed for institution status (ie, public vs private)
and academic rank (discipline chairperson vs non-chairperson and
professor vs junior faculty member) (p<0.01 for each). The median number
of cumulative publications per faculty member was 34 (range, 0-370).

Conclusion. Significant differences exist in yearly and cumulative
publication rates for faculty members and bibliometric indices among
pharmaceutical science disciplines and academic ranks within research-
intensive colleges and schools of pharmacy. These data may be important
for benchmarking purposes.

ABSTRACT: Objective: To evaluate the level of evidence published in
infertility journals with the highest impact factors.

Design: Systematic review. We searched in PubMed identifying potential
systematic reviews with meta-analysis (SRs) and randomized controlled
trials (RCTs) between 2006 and 2010 in the five fertility journals with
highest impact factor.

Setting: Academic institution.

Patient(s): None. Intervention(s): None.

Main Outcomes Measure(s): Number and proportion of potential SRs and RCTs
published in 2006-2011, and quality assessment of real RCTs published in
2010.

Result(s): Among evaluated articles, 1.5% and 6.8% were SRs and RCTs.
Fertility and Sterility has been the journal with more potential SRs and
RCTs, and Human Reproduction Update was the only one with an increasing
trend in the number of potential SRs (from 5.3% in 2006 to 24.4% in
2011). Among confirmed RCTs, for each quality assessment item, between
50% and 85% were classified as having low risk of bias, and the most
common high risk of bias was related to allocation concealment. Only 23%
had a trial registration, which were associated with higher quality
assessment classifications. Only 10% of RCTs reported pharmaceutical
industry funding.

Conclusion(s): This is the first study assessing the methodologic quality
of publications in the top five fertility journals. More than 90% of all
the publications were neither SRs nor RCTs. It is remarkable that the
risk of bias was generally low. Enhancing trial registration and funding
source statements represent opportunities to improve the quality of
reporting. We hope this information is useful to researchers, editorial
boards, and clinicians moving forward with research in our field. (Fertil

ABSTRACT: This paper seeks to examine how federal financial support
of academic scientists shapes their collaborative behavior. More
specifically, it investigates two questions: (i) are there threshold
sizes of federal grants that have effects on collaboration? and (ii) do
the threshold sizes differ by discipline? To test and model these
questions, this paper uses data collected in a 20042005 survey by the
Research Valuing Mapping Project (a project based at Georgia Tech and led
by Barry Bozeman) of 2,086 academically based research scientists and
engineers. The analysis in this paper reaffirms the positive relationship
between federal funding and collaboration seen in previous works, but the
findings suggest that there is in fact a threshold effectas the positive
relationship has a diminishing influence. The findings of this paper are
more limited with respect to how academic disciplines threshold levels
differ. The results indicate a difference in the threshold levels between
disciplines for three of the eight models.

KEYWORDS+: IMPACT FACTOR

ABSTRACT: CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Impact factors are currently the
bibliometric index most used for evaluating scientific journals. However,
the way in which they are used, for instance concerning the study or
journal types analyzed, can markedly interfere with estimate reliability.
This study aimed to analyze the citation distribution pattern in three
Brazilian journals of general medicine.

DESIGN AND SETTING: This was a descriptive study based on numbers of
citations of scientific studies published by three Brazilian journals of
general medicine.

METHODS: The journals analyzed were Sao Paulo Medical Journal, Clinics
and Revista da Associacao Medica Brasileira. This survey used data
available from the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) platform,
from which the total number of papers published in each journal in 2007-
2008 and the number of citations of these papers in 2009 were obtained.
>From these data, the citation distribution was derived and journal impact
factors (average number of citations) were estimated. These factors were
then compared with those directly available from the ISI Journal of
Citation Reports (JCR).

RESULTS: Respectively, 134, 203 and 192 papers were published by these
journals during the period analyzed. The observed citation distributions
were highly skewed, such that many papers had few citations and a small
percentage had many citations. It was not possible to identify any
specific pattern for the most cited papers or to exactly reproduce the
JCR impact factors.

CONCLUSION: Use of measures like "impact factors", which characterize
citations through averages, does not adequately represent the citation
distribution in the journals analyzed.

ABSTRACT: In the individual assessment of a scientific performance,
five scientometric indices have been used most: the h-index, the index g,
the h-major index, the contemporary h-index and the normalized h-index.
We propose an alternative index ("Index h-fac"), which considers
positively the participation of the first author and that, by having a
dynamic characteristic, continuously monitors his/her performance and is
easily adaptable to particular or individual situations from different
research groups. Results from the geometric mean between the original h-
index as proposed by Hirsh and a correction factor ("fac", "first author
commitment") and, in turn, this value is divided by the mean interval (in
years) of all studies. The index emphasizes two scores (X and Y). These
scores X and Y were obtained by asking to all 83 cardiovascular surgeons
from Southern Brazil (Parana, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul) and
Specialists, how they realistically estimated, in percentage, their
effective contribution in each published paper in which they appeared as
first author. Of the total, 80 (96.4%) responded. The average obtained
was 78.0% and on this basis, the X score was established as 0.75 and the
score Y as 0.25. The new index also considers the total number of
citations as first author and as co-author, the average number of
coauthors per publication and the total number of papers published.
Theoretical examples are presented, discussing the main advantages of
application. Serial evaluations in real world situations should be
instituted to confirm the diagnostic and prognostic utility of this new
index.

ABSTRACT: This study examines the contributors, subject contents,
and methodologies of public policy scholarship in Taiwan. Through an
analysis of 192 articles published in five journals between 1996 and
2007, it suggests that a professional journal solely devoted to public
policy analysis is necessary to connect academic researchers and
practitioners, and that policy studies in Taiwan must continuously raise
the level of methodological rigor. The studys results help public policy
communities in other countries to have a better understanding of Taiwans
public policy research; furthermore, by drawing attention to the problems
and weaknesses in the development of Taiwanese public policy scholarship,
the study is meant to advance the current discussion on ways to
strengthen the quality of policy research around the world.

ABSTRACT: A number of liaison librarians were closely engaged with
the UK's Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in 2008 and found this an
important new direction in which to develop. Susan Ashworth had
responsibility for the team within Research and Learning Support Services
at the University of Glasgow Library, which worked on the Glasgow
University submission and had the job of checking for accuracy the
outputs of all research-active academic staff. She describes the stresses
and strains of the exercise, as well as its satisfactions, and suggests
that liaison and other librarians can have a significant role to play,
not only in ensuring the accuracy of the bibliographic input but also in
resolving the many queries and difficulties which arise during the RAE
process.

ABSTRACT: Many real world applications can be naturally formulated
as a directed graph learning problem. How to extract the directed link
structures of a graph and use labeled vertices are the key issues to
infer labels of the remaining unlabeled vertices. However, directed graph
learning is not well studied in data mining and machine learning areas.
In this paper, we propose a novel Co-linkage Analysis (CA) method to
process directed graphs in an undirected way with the directional
information preserved. On the induced undirected graph, we use a Green's
function approach to solve the semi-supervised learning problem. We
present a new zero-mode free Laplacian which is invertible. This leads to
an Improved Green's Function (IGF) method to solve the classification
problem, which is also extended to deal with multi-label classification
problems. Promising results in extensive experimental evaluations on real
data sets have demonstrated the effectiveness of our approach.

Abstract:
Objective: The purpose of this study is to analyse Iranian scientific publications in the neuroscience subfields by librarians and neuroscientists, using Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) via Web of Science data over the period, 20022008. Methods: Data were retrieved from the SCIE. Data were collected from the subject area of the database and classified by neuroscience experts into 14 subfields. To identify the citation patterns, we applied the impact factor and the number of publication. Data were also analysed using HISTCITE, Excel 2007 and SPSS. Results: Seven hundred and thirty-four papers have been published by Iranian between 2002 and 2008. Findings showed a growing trend of neuroscience papers in the last 3 years with most papers (264) classified in the neuropharmacology subfield. There were fewer papers in neurohistory, psychopharmacology and artificial intelligence. International contributions of authors were mostly in the neurology subfield, and Collaboration !
Coefficient for the neuroscience subfields in Iran was 0.686 which is acceptable. Most international collaboration between Iranians and developed countries was from USA. Eighty-seven percent of the published papers were in journals with the impact factor between 0 and 4; 25% of papers were published by the researchers affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Conclusion: Progress of neuroscience in Iran is mostly seen in the neuropharmacology and the neurology subfields. Other subfields should also be considered as a research priority by health policymakers. As this study was carried out by the collaboration of librarians and neuroscientists, it has been proved valuable for both librarians and policymakers. This study may be encouraging for librarians from other developing countries.

Abstract:
Introduction. Research activity related to different aspects of diagnosis, epidemiology and treatment of glioblastoma has increased during recent years. Authors of scientific publications are able to choose between different formats including case reports. Little is known about their influence on advancement of the field or scientific merits. Do glioblastoma case reports attract attention or do they go largely unrecognized? Methods. Different measures of impact, visibility and quality of published research are available, each with its own pros and cons. For the present evaluation (to the best of our knowledge the first one on this subject), article citation rate was chosen. The databases PubMed and Scopus were searched for articles that were published during the 5-year time period between 2006 and 2010. Results. We identified 5831 articles dealing with glioblastoma. Of these, 286 (4.9%) reported on single patient cases and 15 (0.26%) were reports of two cases. The median num!
ber of citations was 1 (range 0-37). Stratified by year of publication, the median number ranged from 0 for those published in 2010 to 3 for those published in 2006. Citations appeared to gradually increase during the first 2-3 years after publication. As compared to other articles, case reports were significantly less likely to receive a large number of citations. Conclusion. Compared to other formats, the proportion of case reports was limited and few of them were highly cited. It cannot be excluded that case reports without citation provide interesting information to some readers. However, their educational value is difficult to quantify.

Abstract:
Recently there has been huge growth in the number of articles displayed on the Web of Science (WoS), but it is unclear whether this is linked to a growth of science or simply additional coverage of already existing journals by the database provider. An analysis of the category of journals in the period of 2000-2008 shows that the number of basic journals covered by Web of Science (WoS) steadily decreased, whereas the number of new, recently established journals increased. A rising number of older journals is also covered. These developments imply a crescive number of articles, but a more significant effect is the enlargement of traditional, basic journals in terms of annual articles. All in all it becomes obvious that the data set is quite instable due to high fluctuation caused by the annual selection criteria, the impact factor. In any case, it is important to look at the structures at the level of specific fields in order to differentiate between "real" and "artificial" g!
rowth. Our findings suggest that even-though a growth of about 34 % can be measured in article numbers in the period of 2000-2008, 17 % of this growth stems from the inclusion of old journals that have been published for a longer time but were simply not included in the database so far.

Abstract:
Here we show a comparison of top economics departments in the US and EU based on a summary measure of the multidimensional prestige of influential papers in 2010. The multidimensional prestige takes into account that several indicators should be used for a distinct analysis of structural changes at the score distribution of paper prestige. We argue that the prestige of influential articles should not only consider one indicator as a single dimension, but in addition take into account further dimensions, since several different indicators have been developed to evaluate the impact of academic papers. After having identified the multidimensionally influential articles from an economics department, their prestige scores can be aggregated to produce a summary measure of the multidimensional prestige of research output of this department, which satisfies numerous properties.

Abstract:
"Publish or perish" is the time-honored "principle" for academicians who race to accumulate lines under the "publications" section of a curriculum vitae. The original intent of publication-to inform others of findings and further scientific knowledge-has been corrupted by factors including (1) exponential growth of journals and the journal industry, fueled in part by intrusion of the Internet into all aspects of academic life; and (2) adoption of journal metrics (rather than written content) as the measure of scientific quality. The proprietary Thomson Reuters Impact Factor is the most pernicious metric, having caused editors and publishers to change editorial practices to boost the number. At the same time, gullible administrators and government agencies have been persuaded that metrics for the journal in which materials are published can be used as a measure of the worth of individual investigators (and institutions) and their research efforts: simple numbers can be substi!
tuted for the burdensome effort required to read and assess research quality. Thus, granting of research funds, awarding of academic rank and tenure, and determination of salaries (including bonus payments) have become tied to manipulable journal metrics rather than the significance or quality of reported research. Therefore, it is no wonder that the integrity of science is more often being questioned. How should a young investigator approach the "publish or perish" dilemma? Performing sound research and preparing optimal materials for publication must remain the overriding goals: properly articulate the question addressed by the study; thoroughly document all methods and case information; carefully describe results including any conflicting or negative findings; discuss the importance of the findings along with how the results address the initial question and whether findings refute or confirm previous studies; prepare properly cited bibliographic references; list all auth!
or contributions, potential conflicts of interest, financial s!
 upport,
and required ethical approvals; and provide a catchy title and an abstract containing sufficient information that other investigators perusing scientific indices will be enticed to read the published article. Submit the completed manuscript to the most appropriate journal based on that journal's previously published content and relevance to the field of study regardless of journal metrics. On publication, notify investigators in the same field to ask for their comments on the work. Thus, an individual will become known for the quality of his or her work product and the worshiping of publication metrics will be unnecessary.

Abstract:
An index system for evaluating academic papers is constructed and verified based on the empirical analysis of papers that has gained the 6th Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Award for Outstanding Achievements. Some new index, such as paper discipline impact factor, discipline average cited rate per paper and discipline average downloaded rate per paper have been put forward in this paper. The empirical research results show that the ranking of papers calculated by this evaluation index system is in conformity with the awards determined by peer review in general, but still needs to be verified and improved in practice.

Abstract:
The journal impact factor (JIF), and how best to rate the performance of a journal and the articles they contain, are areas of great debate. The aim of this paper was to assess various ranking methods of journal quality for mental health nursing journals, and to list the top 10 articles that have received the most number of citations to date. Seven mental health nursing journals were chosen for the analysis of citations they received in 2010, as well as their current impact factors from two sources, and other data for ranking purposes. There was very little difference in the top four mental health nursing journals and their overall rankings when combining various bibliometric indicators. That said, the International Journal of Mental Health Nursing is currently the highest ranked mental health nursing journal based on JIF, but publishes fewer articles per year compared to other journals. Overall, very few articles received 50 or more citations. This study shows that research!
ers need to consider more than one ranking method when deciding where to send or publish their research.

This study examines the effect of international collaboration of Slovenian authors and the status of journals where papers are published (as determined by their impact factors) on the impact of papers as measured by the number of citations papers receive. Research programme groups working in Slovenia in the 2004-2008 period in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, biotechnology, and medical science were used for analyses. The results of the analyses show that the effects of the two factors differ among the fields. We discuss possible reasons for this, including the possibility that differences are the result of Slovenia's science policy.

Abstract:
The study of science-making is a growing discipline that builds largely on online publication and citation databases, while prepublication processes remain hidden. Here, we report on results from a large-scale survey of the submission process, covering 923 scientific journals from the biological sciences in years 2006 to 2008. Manuscript flows among journals revealed a modular submission network, with high-impact journals preferentially attracting submissions. However, about 75% of published articles were submitted first to the journal that would publish them, and high-impact journals published proportionally more articles that had been resubmitted from another journal. Submission history affected post-publication impact: Resubmissions from other journals received significantly more citations than first-intent submissions, and resubmissions between different journal communities received significantly fewer citations.

Abstract:
Objectives A journal impact factor represents the mean number of citations per article published. Designed as one tool to measure the relative importance of a journal, impact factors are often incorporated into academic evaluation of investigators. The authors sought to determine how impact factors of emergency medicine (EM) journals compare to journals from other medical and surgical specialties and if any change has taken place over time. Methods The 2010 impact factors and 5-year impact factors for each journal indexed by the Thomson Reuters ISI Web of Knowledge Journal Citation Reports (JCR) were collected, and EM, medical, and surgical specialties were evaluated. The maximum, median, and interquartile range (IQR) of the current impact factor and 5-year impact factor in each journal category were determined, and specialties were ranked according to the summary statistics. The top three impact factor journals for each specialty were analyzed, and growth trends from 2001 t!
hrough 2010 were examined with random effects linear regression. Results Data from 2,287 journals in 31 specialties were examined. There were 23 EM journals with a current maximum impact factor of 4.177, median of 1.269, and IQR of 0.400 to 2.176. Of 23 EM journals, 57% had a 5-year impact factor available, with a maximum of 4.531, median of 1.325, and IQR of 0.741 to 2.435. The top three EM journals had a mean standard deviation (+/- SD) impact factor of 3.801 (+/- 0.621) and median of 4.142 and a mean (+/- SD) 5-year impact factor of 3.788 (+/- 1.091) and median of 4.297, with a growth trend of 0.211 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.177 to 0.245; p < 0.001). By any criterion analyzed, EM journals ranked no higher than 24th among 31 specialties. Conclusions Emergency medicine journals rank low in impact factor summary statistics and growth trends among 31 medical and surgical specialties.

Abstract:
Objective: To present an international view of the scientific production in the field of primary care in the period 1985-2004.
Design: Retrospective, observational study. Bibliometric analysis.
Location: Medline database. WebSPIRS access through version 4.3. We analysed two periods: 2000-2004 (cross-sectional) and 1985-2004 (developmental). Search based on "MeSH Major" with descriptors: Primary Care or Primary Health Care, Family Practice, Family Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and Entry Terms associated with these.
Key Measures: We analysed the bibliometric indicators of production, circulation, dispersion, and visibility.
Results: In 2000-2004, published 20911 articles were published, 0.73% of total production. There was a growth rate (1985-2004) of 221%, which was 2.4 times more than average. Transience rate was 83.17%. The English language is predominant (88.81%) over 34 languages, with Spanish being the next (2.6%). Sixteen countries produce 95.67% of the articles. Spain occupies the 7th place. Universities (52%) are the most productive institutions. There are 1074 different journals with the 10 most productive being: Br J Gen Pract, Adv Nurse Pract, Aust Fam Physician, Fam Pract, Fam Med, BMJ, Aten Primary Health Serv J, Can Fam Physician, J Fam Pract. The proportion of trials (5.43%) in PC is similar to other disciplines and has increased by 453% (1985-2004).
Conclusions: The production of Primary care is about 1% of the total scientific output, with a noticeable and higher than average growth over 20 years. The proportion of clinical trials is similar to other disciplines. Although Anglo-Saxon countries and journals are the highest producers, Spain and the journal ATEN PRIMARIA is among those highlighted. (C) 2011 Elsevier Espana, S.L. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
Background Concepts for medicinal plants are represented by a variety of associated general terms with specific indexing patterns in databases, which may not consistently reflect growth of records. Objectives The objectives of this study are to assess the development in databases by identifying general terms that describe herbal medicine with optimal retrieval recall and to identify possible special trends in co-occurrence of specific and general concepts. Methods Different search strategies are tested in cab abstracts, medline and web of science. Specific terms (Origanum and Salvia) are employed. Relevant general terms (e.g. Plants, Medicinal, Phytotherapy, Herbal drugs) are identified, along with indexing trends and co-occurrences. Results Growth trends, in specific (narrower) terms, are similar among databases. General terms, however, exhibit dissimilar trends, sometimes almost opposing one another. Co-occurrence of specific and general terms is changing over time. Conclu!
sions General terms may not denote definite development of trends as the use of terms differs amongst databases, making it difficult to correctly assess possible numbers of relevant records. Perceived increase can, sometimes, be attributed to an increased occurrence of a more general term alongside the specific one. Thesaurus-controlled databases may yield more hits, because of up-posted (broader) terms. Use of broader terms is helpful as it enhances retrieval of relevant documents.

Abstract:
In this paper, the method to detect the future highly-cited papers (HCPs) in citation network was discussed. Considering the growing process of one paper, the content features describing the "rewards" that papers obtained in their earlier stage were extracted to characterize their quality mechanism. Integrating the content features and the external features obtained from the social view of papers' communication process, the feature space used to model HCPs was established. Basing on the feature space, the typical features of HCPs were extracted by the framework of rough set reduction. It shows that the papers' inner qualities and the external features mainly presented as the reputation of authors and journals make joint efforts to generating HCPs in future.

Abstract:
This study uses bibliometric indicators - measuring activity, impact and co-authorship - to analyze the articles published by authors affiliated to the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), indexed at Web of Science (WOS) from 2000 to 2009. The literature review addresses science, evaluation and indicators of scientific production. The articles were classified according to the table of CAPES/CNPq in nine broad areas: Agrarian Sciences (CA), Life Sciences (CB), Exact and Earth Sciences (CET), Humanities (CH), Health Sciences (CS), Applied Social Sciences (CSA), Engineering (E), Languages, Linguistics & Arts (LLA) and Multidisciplinary (M). The sample was composed of 9,250 articles split into areas, authors, journals and cited articles. UFRGS production at WOS increased from 512 in 2000 to 9,250 in 2009, with an average annual growth rate of 12.69%. Most of the scientific production of UFRGS is published in English and in journals with impact. Seven highly cited a!
rticles were found, all written in English, with international collaboration and published in journals with high impact. CET appears with 33.19% cited articles, followed by CB and CS. There is a strong trend towards co-authorship showing that the scientific production of UFRGS is done mostly in co-authorship, from two to 10 authors working in collaboration.

Abstract:
The number of citations a scholarly work receives is a common measure of its impact on a field. Citation classics are works that are the most highly cited. The purpose of the present article is to describe and analyze citation classics in the journal Deviant Behavior (DB) and to compare them to classics in related academic journals. Data are from the Web of Science and refer to the number of citations each of the top 1% of articles in DB received since 1979. Data are also collected for three additional journals for comparative purposes. Of the 960 works published in DB, the median citations for DB citation classics were 55.5 with a range between 43 and 103. The impact of DB citation classics was in the middle of the three comparison journals. The principle themes of DB classics included delinquency (3) and sexual deviance (3). The other topics included one article each on suicide, dating violence, employee deviance, and involuntary childlessness. The classics represent a bal!
ance between qualitative and quantitative methods. Citation classics in DB represent a variety of topical areas in deviance, but with special attention paid to sexual and juvenile deviance. Future work is needed to assess what predicts which DB articles ultimately become citation classics.

Abstract:
This paper demonstrates the potential of bibliometric analysis in the context of urban studies. After a brief discussion of the measurement of knowledge production, we provide an analysis of how the field of urban studies is constructed. We do this in three contexts: first, in the narrowly defined population of journals that constitutes the Thomson Reuters classification of urban studies: second, in the larger population of journals deemed to be within the social and behavioral sciences: and third, in a subset of the applied sciences. We find that, by using keyword analysis, it is possible to identify three distinct spheres of 'urban knowledge' that contain some overlap but also significant differences. We explore the significance of that for the development of urban studies. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
A taxonomic revision of Duboscia (Malvaceae) with two species, D. macrocarpa and D. viridiflora, is presented and used to demonstrate a mechanism for linking from revisions to specimens held in herbaria using HTTP URIs. The implementation of this mechanism at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (E) is used as an example. Advantages of this approach include near universal support amongst web-connected devices. Hindrances to widespread adoption of such an approach are also discussed.

Abstract:
We propose a new method to assess the merit of any set of scientific papers in a given field based on the citations they receive. Given a field and a citation impact indicator, such as the mean citation or the h-index, the merit of a given set of n articles is identified with the probability that a randomly drawn set of n articles from a given pool of articles in that field has a lower citation impact according to the indicator in question. The method allows for comparisons between sets of articles of different sizes and fields. Using a dataset acquired from Thomson Scientific that contains the articles published in the periodical literature in the period 1998-2007, we show that the novel approach yields rankings of research units different from those obtained by a direct application of the mean citation or the h-index.

Abstract:
We analyze the online response to the preprint publication of a cohort of 4,606 scientific articles submitted to the preprint database arXiv.org between October 2010 and May 2011. We study three forms of responses to these preprints: downloads on the arXiv.org site, mentions on the social media site Twitter, and early citations in the scholarly record. We perform two analyses. First, we analyze the delay and time span of article downloads and Twitter mentions following submission, to understand the temporal configuration of these reactions and whether one precedes or follows the other. Second, we run regression and correlation tests to investigate the relationship between Twitter mentions, arXiv downloads, and article citations. We find that Twitter mentions and arXiv downloads of scholarly articles follow two distinct temporal patterns of activity, with Twitter mentions having shorter delays and narrower time spans than arXiv downloads. We also find that the volume of Twitt!
er mentions is statistically correlated with arXiv downloads and early citations just months after the publication of a preprint, with a possible bias that favors highly mentioned articles.

Abstract:
For a journal manager, boosting a journal's impact factor is an important objective. The impact factor is a measure of the frequency with which the average article in a journal is cited in a given period. The dynamics of impact factors are caused by the interplay of several concepts, such as seniority of authors and reviewers, journal policies, online availability of journals and quality of contributions. This paper's objective is to discuss three strategies to sustainably improve both a journal's impact factor and its underlying resources. To this end, a journal's assets and resources are captured in a structural simulation model, which is used for strategy experiments. The paper offers three insights: It provides a dynamic hypothesis about the causal structures underlying a journal impact factor; it highlights the fact that the levels and growth rates of the crucial resources, authors and reviewers, must be developed in dynamic correspondence. Finally, developing the stock!
of high-quality reviewers requires time and resources but is more stable than the stock of authors and, hence, has a higher potential for guiding the journal into a regime of sustainable development. Limitations and future paths are discussed. Copyright (c) 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:
The objective of this study was to describe the patterns of peer-reviewed general radiology publication rates with reference to deaneries in the UK. This was a retrospective bibliometric analysis of publications in the six highest cited general radiology journals. Publications were identified using a manual search in PubMed between 2005 and 2009. Publications originating from UK radiology departments were identified and subcategorised into primary institution of origin, deanery and publication type. The total number of radiology trainees in each deanery was obtained from the General Medical Council. 913 publications were included in the study. Original papers constituted 48.7% (n=445), review articles 30.3% (n=277) and case reports 17.4% (n=159). The median number of publications in each deanery was 27 [interquartile range (IQR) 11-60], and the median number of publications per trainee was 0.49 (IQR 0.31-0.88). The largest proportion of publications came from the London dean!
ery (n=354, 38.8%), followed by Eastern 86 (9.4%), Oxford and Yorkshire 70 (7.7% each). Relative to the number of trainees within each deanery, Oxford had the highest number of publications per trainee (1.78), followed by East Midlands (1.5), London (1.25) and Eastern (0.99). There was a significantly higher publication rate for those deaneries with academic radiologists (p<0.0001). There is a marked difference in the volume of published work in the general radiology literature among UK deaneries, even accounting for differences in the number of trainees. This probably means that opportunities for training in research are similarly non-uniform.
