Abstract:
The World Bank claims to be a "knowledge bank," but do its knowledge products influence development thinking, or is the Bank merely a proselytizer? The World Bank is a prolific publisher; for example, it has published more journal articles in economics than any university except Harvard. But what about their impact on development thinking? Using citation data from Google Scholar it is hard to discern more than a negligible impact for a great many Bank publications. However, a sizeable minority of its journal articles and books have been highly cited. Compared to leading research universities and other international institutions, the Bank's ranking in terms of widely-used citation-based indices is no lower than for its journal article counts. This suggests that the Bank's research does much more than proselytize.

Abstract:
Using co-citation analysis, the present study attempts to rationalize and organize the combined alliance and innovation literature in order to determine its intellectual structure (i.e. its shared attributes such as models, theories, methods, findings, and implications), as well as to gain a deeper understanding of the most important research trends. More specifically, our goals are: (1) to delineate the intellectual structure of research on alliance and innovation, as represented in the academic literature; (2) to determine the subfields that constitute the intellectual structure and the relationships, if any, between these subfields; (3) to identify contributions that play a pivotal role in bridging two or more conceptual domains of research; and finally, (4) to map the intellectual structure in a two-dimensional space in order to visualize spatial distances between intellectual themes. Implications for future studies are then drawn.

Abstract:
Proposed by Hirsch as a quantitative measure of the total output of a researcher, the h index does not work well in the field of life sciences, where an author's position on a paper typically depends on the author's contribution. We revise the h index by weighing first and last authorship papers four times heavier than middle authorship papers. The revised index (r) signifies a shift in how we evaluate the research output in biology and medicine: it places more value on conducting and directing original, independent investigations as compared with contributing to projects conducted and directed by others.

Abstract:
We introduce a novel methodology for mapping academic institutions based on their journal publication profiles. We believe that journals in which researchers from academic institutions publish their works can be considered as useful identifiers for representing the relationships between these institutions and establishing comparisons. However, when academic journals are used for research output representation, distinctions must be introduced between them, based on their value as institution descriptors. This leads us to the use of journal weights attached to the institution identifiers. Since a journal in which researchers from a large proportion of institutions published their papers may be a bad indicator of similarity between two academic institutions, it seems reasonable to weight it in accordance with how frequently researchers from different institutions published their papers in this journal. Cluster analysis can then be applied to group the academic institutions, and!
dendrograms can be provided to illustrate groups of institutions following agglomerative hierarchical clustering. In order to test this methodology, we use a sample of Spanish universities as a case study. We first map the study sample according to an institution's overall research output, then we use it for two scientific fields (Information and Communication Technologies, as well as Medicine and Pharmacology) as a means to demonstrate how our methodology can be applied, not only for analyzing institutions as a whole, but also in different disciplinary contexts.

Abstract:
Based on new comparison principles that take into account both the volume of scientific production and its impact, this paper proposes a method for defining reference classes of universities. Several tools are developed in order to enable university managers to define the value system according to which their university shall be compared to others. We apply this methodology to French universities and illustrate it using the reference classes of the best ranked universities according to several value systems.

Focusing on three main branches-"diseases," "drugs and chemicals," and "techniques and equipment"-we use base maps and overlay techniques to investigate the translations and interactions and thus to gain a bibliometric perspective on the dynamics of medical innovations. To this end, we first analyze the MEDLINE database, the MeSH index tree, and the various options for a static mapping from different perspectives and at different levels of aggregation. Following a specific innovation (RNA interference) over time, the notion of a trajectory which leaves a signature in the database is elaborated. Can the detailed index terms describing the dynamics of research be used to predict the diffusion dynamics of research results? Possibilities are specified for further integration between the MEDLINE database on on!
e hand, and the Science Citation Index and Scopus (containing citation information) on the other.

Abstract:
This study aims to propose a methodology that describes the technology fronts evolution and compares the temporal gaps between two specialties. Using the patent documents of a local country, the United States (US), as well as the global context in the smart grid technology as the example, highly cited patents were collected from 2001 to 2010 and divided into a series of overlapping snapshots in which patent citation networks were constructed through bibliographic coupling (BC) analysis. A rolling clustering and features extraction procedure were applied for segmenting networks into clusters and then mapping these clusters into the technology trajectory maps. Next we describe the state of global and the US smart grid development, and then place the US trajectories in the global context to explore the temporal relationship between them. Technology fronts in this study can be categorized into four types - frontrunner, follower, uniquer, and behinder - according to the matching !
criteria and the temporal gap index. The results show that a high percentage of US technology fronts can be classified as frontrunners or uniquers; the nation occupies a leading position worldwide in developing each sub-domain of smart grid technology. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
The paper presents a methodology called hybrid documents co-citation analysis, for studying the interaction between science and technology in technology diffusion. Our approach rests mostly on patent citation, cluster analysis and network analysis. More specifically, with the patents citing Smalley RE in Derwent innovations index as the data sets, the paper implemented hybrid documents co-citation network through two procedures. Then spectrum cluster algorithm was used to reveal the knowledge structure in technology diffusion. After that, with the concordance between network properties and technology diffusion mechanisms, three indicators containing degree, betweenness and citation half-life, were calculated to discuss the basic documents in the pivotal position during the technology diffusion. At last, the paper summarized the hybrid documents co-citation analysis in practise, thus concluded that science and technology undertook different functions and acted dominatingly in!
the different period of technology diffusion, though they were co-activity all the time.

Abstract:
Previous studies have repeatedly demonstrated that the relevance of a citing document is related to the number of times with which the source document is cited. Despite the ease with which electronic documents would permit the incorporation of this information into citation-based document search and retrieval systems, the possibilities of repeated citations remain untapped. Part of this under-utilization may be due to the fact that very little is known regarding the pattern of repeated citations in scholarly literature or how this pattern may vary as a function of journal, academic discipline or self-citation. The current research addresses these unanswered questions in order to facilitate the future incorporation of repeated citation information into document search and retrieval systems. Using data mining of electronic texts, the citation characteristics of nine different journals, covering the three different academic fields (economics, computing, and medicine & biology),!
were characterized. It was found that the frequency (f) with which a reference is cited Nor more times within a document is consistent across the sampled journals and academic fields. Self-citation causes an increase in frequency, and this effect becomes more pronounced for large N. The objectivity, automatability, and insensitivity of repeated citations to journal and discipline, present powerful opportunities for improving citation-based document search. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:
In many data sets, articles are classified into subfields through the journals in which they have been published. The problem is that while many journals are assigned to a single subfield, many others are assigned to several. This article discusses a multiplicative and a fractional strategy to deal with this situation. The empirical part studies different aspects of citation distributions under the two strategies, namely: the number of articles, the mean citation rate, the broad shape of the distribution, their characterization in terms of size- and scale-invariant indicators of high and low impact, and the presence of extreme distributions, that is, distributions that behave very differently from the rest. We found that, despite large differences in the number of articles according to both strategies, the similarity of the citation characteristics of articles published in journals assigned to one or several subfields guarantees that choosing one of the two strategies may no!
t lead to a radically different picture in practical applications. Nevertheless, the characterization of citation excellence through a high-impact indicator may considerably differ depending on that choice.

Abstract:
Empirical studies of obliteration by incorporation (OBI) may be conducted at the level of the database record or the fulltext citation-in-context. To assess the difference between the two approaches, 1,040 articles with a variant of the phrase "evolutionarily stable strategies" (ESS) were identified by searching the Web of Science (Thomson Reuters, Philadelphia, PA) and discipline-level databases. The majority (72%) of all articles were published in life sciences journals. The ESS concept is associated with a small set of canonical publications by John Maynard Smith; OBI represents a decoupling of the use of the phrase and a citation to a John Maynard Smith publication. Across all articles at the record level, OBI is measured by the number of articles with the phrase in the database record but which lack a reference to a source article (implicit citations). At the citation-in-context level, articles that coupled a non-Maynard Smith citation with the ESS phrase (indirect cita!
tions) were counted along with those that cited relevant Maynard Smith publications (explicit citations) and OBI counted only based on those articles that lacked any citation coupled with the ESS text phrase. The degree of OBI observed depended on the level of analysis. Record-level OBI trended upward, peaking in 2002 (62%), with a secondary drop and rebound to 53% (2008). Citation-in-context OBI percentages were lower with no clear pattern. Several issues relating to the design of empirical OBI studies are discussed.

Abstract:
Information systems permeate every business function, thereby requiring holistic Information Systems (IS) approaches. Much academic research is still discipline specific. More interdisciplinary research is needed to inform both industry and academe. Interdisciplinary research has been positively associated with increased levels of innovation, productivity and impact. IS research contributes to the knowledge creation and innovation within IS and other College of Business (COB) disciplines. This research defines the intellectual structures within IS and between IS and other COB disciplines. We use a large scale, diachronic bibliometric analysis of COB journals to assess reciprocal knowledge exchange and also to identify potential intra- and interdisciplinary publication outlets. Our findings show an increase in IS knowledge contributions to other COB disciplines, which supports the discussion that IS is a reference discipline. Our research also visually depicts the intellectua!
l structures within IS and between IS and other COB disciplines. Anyone exploring research in IS and allied COB disciplines can peruse the proximity maps to identify groups of similar journals. The findings from this research inform decisions related to which journals to read, target as publication outlets, and include on promotion and tenure lists.

We find evidence for the universality of two relative bibliometric indicators of the quality of individual scientific publications taken from different data sets. One of these is a new index that considers both citation and reference counts. We demonstrate this universality for relatively well cited publications from a single institute, grouped by year of publication and by faculty or by department. We show similar behaviour in publications submitted to the arXiv e-print archive, grouped by year of submission and by sub-archive. We also find that for reasonably well cited papers this distribution is well fitted by a lognormal with a variance of around sigma(2) = 1.3 which is consistent with the results of Radicchi et al. (Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 105:17268-17272, 2008). Our work demonstrates that comparisons can be made between publications from different disciplines and publication dates, regardless of their citation count and without expensive access to the whole world-wide !
citation graph. Further, it shows that averages of the logarithm of such relative bibliometric indices deal with the issue of long tails and avoid the need for statistics based on lengthy ranking procedures.

Abstract:
Journal impact factors (JIF) have been an accepted indicator of ranking journals. However, there has been increasing arguments against the fairness of using the JIF as the sole ranking criteria. This resulted in the creation of many other quality metric indices such as the h-index, g-index, immediacy index, Citation Half-Life, as well as SCIMago journal rank (SJR) to name a few. All these metrics have their merits, but none include any great degree of normalization in their computations. Every citation and every publication is taken as having the same importance and therefore weight. The wealth of available data results in multiple different rankings and indexes existing. This paper proposes the use of statistical standard scores or z-scores. The calculation of the z-scores can be performed to normalize the impact factors given to different journals, the average of z-scores can be used across various criteria to create a unified relative measurement (RM) index score. We use !
the 2008 JCR provided by Thompson Reuters to demonstrate the differences in rankings that would be affected if the RM-index was adopted discuss the fairness that this index would provide to the journal quality ranking.

Abstract:
This paper proposes a method for classifying true papers of a set of focal scientists and false papers of homonymous authors in bibliometric research processes. It directly addresses the issue of identifying papers that are not associated ("false") with a given author. The proposed method has four steps: name and affiliation filtering, similarity score construction, author screening, and boosted trees classification. In this methodological paper we calculate error rates for our technique. Therefore, we needed to ascertain the correct attribution of each paper. To do this we constructed a small dataset of 4,253 papers allegedly belonging to a random sample of 100 authors. We apply the boosted trees algorithm to classify papers of authors with total false rate no higher than 30% (i.e. 3,862 papers of 91 authors). A one-run experiment achieves a testing misclassification error 0.55%, testing recall 99.84%, and testing precision 99.60%. A 50-run experiment shows that the median !
of testing classification error is 0.78% and mean 0.75%. Among the 90 authors in the testing set (one author only appeared in the training set), the algorithm successfully reduces the false rate to zero for 86 authors and misclassifies just one or two papers for each of the remaining four authors.

Abstract:
The paper deals with quality of economic research in Slovakia, which is strongly connected with quality of economic education at Slovak universities. Quality of economic research is described by publication activity of Slovak professors of economics, who are usually the leaders in number of publications and citations and used to be internationally recognised.
The paper does not seek for possible roots or explanations of the situation. It only tries to describe the status quo and provide useful data and comparisons.

Abstract:
We use the 2010 Google Scholar citations of academic economists working in France in 2008 to draw a panorama of research in economics in France. This allows us to test whether using a broader support than Econlit publication records changes the assessment of research productivity. We compare different citation indexes, as the number of citations per author, the H-index or the G-index, which we calculate at the individual and at the department levels, with some Econlit publication scores. The latter take more or less into account the quality of journals and the analysis is performed for several time periods.
The hierarchy of universities obtained through Google Scholar citation indexes is relatively close to that observed when using Econlit publication scores. However we also observe some dramatic changes for a couple of universities, positive mainly when economics is not the research core of these institutions.

Abstract:
We report the results of hypotheses tests about the effects of several measures of research, teaching, and service on the likelihood of achieving the ranks of associate and full professor. In conducting these tests, we control for institutional and individual background characteristics. We focus our tests on the link between productivity and academic rank and explore whether this relationship reveals a gender dimension. The analyses are based on an APSA-sponsored survey of all faculty members in departments of political science (government, public affairs, and international relations) in the United States.

Abstract:
In this paper, we establish a evaluation approach system of science and technology, and analyze five evaluation approaches of linear objective weighting. A new evaluation approach of science and technology to objective weighting is then put forward on these bases- Weight Giving Based on Data Independence and Data Fluctuation. It is also tested and verified by data from papers in agricultural journals of Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China. The method is to calculate the deviation ratio of evaluation index and the index's independent information rate by the improved multiple correlation coefficient, then multiply the standardized eviation. ratio by the standardized index's independent mformation n rate and normalize the product to get weight. It is a synthesis of advantages of all approaches of linear objective weighting by now and it has enriched objective weighting theory. The applicable conditions for objective weighting are analyzed and discussed as!
well. The results show that the entropy weight method and discrete coefficient method have similarities in computing the weight of indices.

Abstract:
Technology has evolved through the dynamic process of knowledge transfer. The exploration of technological evolution from a quantitative perspective has often been mentioned in the intellectual pursuit. The study applies bibliometric method to the articles published in the field of mechanism and machine theory (MMT). Afterward we analyzed the trends of MMT articles during the 30 years. We found that the ratios of the MMT papers in each journal have a trend of growth and have been centered on the certain two magazines. The articles of MMT exhibit a trend of growth. The USA, China and Canada are the major countries which frequently published the papers in the field of MMT and have significant performance in citations. China has rapidly grown in the quantity and the ratios of papers. In addition, the top 10 researchers with the highest h-index in the field of MMT are primarily affiliated with institutions in English-spoken countries, trumping the other countries.

Abstract:
A bibliometric method was developed to investigate the aerosol research based on the papers from 1991 to 2009 in Science Citation Index Expanded, the Thomson Reuters. The analysed aspects covered scientific output and citation tracking on the basis of journal patterns; country; institute and author research performances. Improved indicators Peak-Year Citation per Publication and Relative Peak-Year Rate were applied. A significant share of the citation impact and the most cited articles distribution were identified. Lotka's law held good in author performance. Finally, the paper discusses the imperfect nature of the indicators and proposes complementary methods for research evaluation procedures.

ABSTRACT: In this paper, the machine learning tools were used to
identify key features influencing citation impact. Both the papers'
external and quality information were considered in constructing papers'
feature space. Based on the feature space, the soft fuzzy rough set was
used to generate a series of associated feature subsets. Then, the KNN
classifier was used to find the feature subset with the best
classification performance. The results show that citation impact could
be predicted by objectively assessed factors. Both the papers' quality
and external features, mainly represented as the reputation of the first
author, are contributed to future citation impact.

ABSTRACT: This paper demonstrates the potential of bibliometric
analysis in the context of urban studies. After a brief discussion of the
measurement of knowledge production, we provide an analysis of how the
field of urban studies is constructed. We do this in three contexts:
first, in the narrowly defined population of journals that constitutes
the Thomson Reuters classification of urban studies: second, in the
larger population of journals deemed to be within the social and
behavioral sciences: and third, in a subset of the applied sciences. We
find that, by using keyword analysis, it is possible to identify three
distinct spheres of 'urban knowledge' that contain some overlap but also
significant differences. We explore the significance of that for the
development of urban studies. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT: For a journal manager, boosting a journal's impact factor
is an important objective. The impact factor is a measure of the
frequency with which the average article in a journal is cited in a given
period. The dynamics of impact factors are caused by the interplay of
several concepts, such as seniority of authors and reviewers, journal
policies, online availability of journals and quality of contributions.
This paper's objective is to discuss three strategies to sustainably
improve both a journal's impact factor and its underlying resources. To
this end, a journal's assets and resources are captured in a structural
simulation model, which is used for strategy experiments. The paper
offers three insights: It provides a dynamic hypothesis about the causal
structures underlying a journal impact factor; it highlights the fact
that the levels and growth rates of the crucial resources, authors and
reviewers, must be developed in dynamic correspondence. Finally,
developing the stock of high-quality reviewers requires time and
resources but is more stable than the stock of authors and, hence, has a
higher potential for guiding the journal into a regime of sustainable
development. Limitations and future paths are discussed. Copyright (c)

ABSTRACT: Assessing scientific activity is a crucial factor for
development agencies and research institutes. That is why a new
bibliometric indicator has been gaining grounds in the scientific
community - the h-index. This study analyzes the variability/persistence
of the index value in different areas of knowledge and its application as
a tool for science and technology policy.

ABSTRACT: . The Hirsch index (commonly referred to as h-index) is a
bibliometric indicator which is widely recognized as effective for
measuring the scientific production of a scholar since it summarizes size
and impact of the research output. In a formal setting, the h-index is
actually an empirical functional of the distribution of the citation
counts received by the scholar. Under this approach, the asymptotic
theory for the empirical h-index has been recently exploited when the
citation counts follow a continuous distribution and, in particular,
variance estimation has been considered for the Pareto-type and the
Weibull-type distribution families. However, in bibliometric
applications, citation counts display a distribution supported by the
integers. Thus, we provide general properties for the empirical h-index
under the small- and large-sample settings. In addition, we also
introduce consistent non-parametric variance estimation, which allows for
the implementation of large-sample set estimation for the theoretical h-
index.

ABSTRACT: Objectives A journal impact factor represents the mean
number of citations per article published. Designed as one tool to
measure the relative importance of a journal, impact factors are often
incorporated into academic evaluation of investigators. The authors
sought to determine how impact factors of emergency medicine (EM)
journals compare to journals from other medical and surgical specialties
and if any change has taken place over time. Methods The 2010 impact
factors and 5-year impact factors for each journal indexed by the Thomson
Reuters ISI Web of Knowledge Journal Citation Reports (JCR) were
collected, and EM, medical, and surgical specialties were evaluated. The
maximum, median, and interquartile range (IQR) of the current impact
factor and 5-year impact factor in each journal category were determined,
and specialties were ranked according to the summary statistics. The top
three impact factor journals for each specialty were analyzed, and growth
trends from 2001 through 2010 were examined with random effects linear
regression. Results Data from 2,287 journals in 31 specialties were
examined. There were 23 EM journals with a current maximum impact factor
of 4.177, median of 1.269, and IQR of 0.400 to 2.176. Of 23 EM journals,
57% had a 5-year impact factor available, with a maximum of 4.531, median
of 1.325, and IQR of 0.741 to 2.435. The top three EM journals had a mean
standard deviation (+/- SD) impact factor of 3.801 (+/- 0.621) and median
of 4.142 and a mean (+/- SD) 5-year impact factor of 3.788 (+/- 1.091)
and median of 4.297, with a growth trend of 0.211 (95% confidence
interval [CI] = 0.177 to 0.245; p < 0.001). By any criterion analyzed, EM
journals ranked no higher than 24th among 31 specialties. Conclusions
Emergency medicine journals rank low in impact factor summary statistics
and growth trends among 31 medical and surgical specialties.

ABSTRACT: We analyze the online response to the preprint
publication of a cohort of 4,606 scientific articles submitted to the
preprint database arXiv.org between October 2010 and May 2011. We study
three forms of responses to these preprints: downloads on the arXiv.org
site, mentions on the social media site Twitter, and early citations in
the scholarly record. We perform two analyses. First, we analyze the
delay and time span of article downloads and Twitter mentions following
submission, to understand the temporal configuration of these reactions
and whether one precedes or follows the other. Second, we run regression
and correlation tests to investigate the relationship between Twitter
mentions, arXiv downloads, and article citations. We find that Twitter
mentions and arXiv downloads of scholarly articles follow two distinct
temporal patterns of activity, with Twitter mentions having shorter
delays and narrower time spans than arXiv downloads. We also find that
the volume of Twitter mentions is statistically correlated with arXiv
downloads and early citations just months after the publication of a
preprint, with a possible bias that favors highly mentioned articles.

ABSTRACT: This paper proposes an approach to automatically extract
metadata from educational resources using citation chain. Tracing the
cited relationship between literatures, utilizing pattern matching
algorithm to determine the most appropriate pattern for resolution,
taking advantage of preorder traversal algorithm to query literature one
by one, the metadata of educational resources, which are cited by others,
can be extracted automatically. The experimental results show that the
approach we proposed is fast, efficient in metadata auto-extracting for
educational resources.
