Abstract: The current descriptive study analyzes the h index of the presidents
of the American Psychological Association (APA) since 1940 to the present.
The h index is calculated from the number of articles published in journals
included in the Web of Science (WOS) database and the citations received by
the articles in the same database. There was no established period of time for
the search and thus, all the results included in the WOS were analyzed. The
total number of results was of 16 676 from which 3 734 were of the presidents
of the APA. The results are shown as a rank-ordered list. It was found that
Albert Bandura and Alan Kazdin are the presidents with the highest h indexes
and that there is an important difference between those and the rest. The
results of the study lead to speculate that the productivity in scientific articles
was not the most important criterion to take into account for the election of
the presidents in the history of the APA.
