SYSTEM BETA RELEASE =================== REFSEER: Citation Recommendation based on Topic Modeling (http://refseer.ist.psu.edu) DESCRIPTION: RefSeer (http://refseer.ist.psu.edu), a beta release Citation Recommendation System, is hosted at the Pennsylvania State University. Given either text from an abstract/description or a pdf document of a paper or part of a paper, RefSeer recommends documents from the CiteSeerX repository as citations. RefSeer internally computes from the text a topical composition based on topic modeling. Based upon this composition, recommended citations for majority topics are ranked and shown in a faceted interface. Refseer uses documents in CiteSeerX for both its offline training and online recommendation. It is currently trained with over 1.5 million documents and new documents are added monthly in its citation database. Citation analysis of meta-analysis articles on posttraumatic stress disorder. CHINESE MEDICAL JOURNAL 124 (7): 1088-1093 Message-ID: Liao, XM; Chen, PY. 2011. Citation analysis of meta-analysis articles on posttraumatic stress disorder. CHINESE MEDICAL JOURNAL 124 (7): 1088-1093. Author Full Name(s): Liao Xi-ming; Chen Ping-yan Language: English Document Type: Article Author Keywords: meta-analysis; posttraumatic stress disorder; bibliometric analysis KeyWords Plus: CONTROLLED CLINICAL-TRIALS; TRAUMA-EXPOSED ADULTS; HIPPOCAMPAL VOLUME; EFFECT-SIZES; PTSD; SURVIVORS; JOURNALS; PHARMACOTHERAPY; INTERVENTION; PUBLICATIONS Abstract: Background In the past two decades enormously scientific researches on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been undertaken and many related meta-analyses have been published. Citation analysis was used to get comprehensive perspectives of meta-analysis articles (MA articles) on PTSD for the purpose of facilitating the researchers, physicians and policy- makers to understand the PTSD. Methods MA articles on PTSD in any languages from January 1980 to March 2009 were included if they presented meta-analytical methods and received at least one citation recorded in the Web of Science (WoS). Whereas studies, in which any effect sizes of PTSD were not distinguished from other psychological disorders, were excluded. Citations to and by identified MA articles were documented basing on records in WoS. Citation analysis was used to examine distribution patterns of characteristics and citation impact of MA articles on PTSD. Canonical analysis was used to explore the relationship between the characteristics of MA articles and citation impact. Results Thirty-four MA articles published during 1998 and 2008 were identified and revealed multiple study topics on PTSD: 10 (29.4%) were about epidemiology, 13 (38.2%) about treatment or intervention, 6 (17.6%) about pathophysiology or neurophysiology or neuroendocrine, 3 (8.8%) about childhood and 2 (5.9%) about psychosocial adversity. Two articles cited most frequently with 456 and 145 counts were published in Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology by Brewin (2000) and Psychological Bulletin by Ozer (2003), respectively. Mean cited count was 7.48 +/- 10.56 and mean age (year 2009 minus article publication year) was (4.24 +/- 2.91) years. They had been cited approximately by 67 disciplines and by authors from 42 countries or territories. Characteristics of meta-analysis highly correlated with citation impact and reflected by canonical correlation of 0.899 (P<0.000 01). Conclusions The age of MA articles predicted their citation impact. Citation analysis would serve to capture the global perspectives and topics of MA articles on PTSD. The hybrid clustering method is extended on the basis of modularity based Louvain method. We introduce two different approaches, graph coupling and graph fusion. The weights of these combined graphs are optimized with the criterion of maximizing the Average Normalized Mutual Information(ANMI). The methods are applied to obtain structural mapping of large scale Web of Science (WoS) journal database by integrating attribute based textual information and relation based citation information. From the experimental, the proposed graph combination scheme is compared with individual graph clustering, spectral clustering and Vector Space Model(VSM) based clustering methods. We discussed four intellectual debates formed by these studies, namely whether nanotechnology is an interdisciplinary field, whether nanoscience and nanotechnology are closely interlinked, whether nanotechnology development is path dependent and who is winning the global nanorace. We also conduct a comparative analysis of bibliometric search strategies used in the literature to harvest the publications and patents, including lexical queries, evolutionary lexical queries, citation analysis, and the use of core journal sets to identify nanotechnology articles. Because most of the compared strategies, except the one using 10 core journals in the field, share a core set of keywords and thus harvest a common batch of publications, they produce very similar ranking tables of the top subject areas and journals and the most prolific countries and institutions. Moreover, the core journal strategy does not provide a robust delineation of an emerging field such as nanotechnology due to the fact that nanotechnology related articles are published in a wide range of journals. Also, the different criteria for selecting the core journals will affect the analytical results dramatically. Initial methods rely greatly on experts specification of analytical parameters, without making use of valuable information embedded in collected data. Given this insight, fuzzy rule induction has recently been studied as a data-driven alternative. Despite its efficiency and reported performance, the fuzzy subsethood metric representing the strength of relations between system variables is only used at a coarse level, with the underlying semantics being Unfortunately distorted via a local cc scaling scheme. To overcome this problem, a novel fuzzy classification system is introduced in this paper, in which the existing measure is used to its full potential via the methodology of qualitative link analysis. With a network representation where variables and their relations are encoded as graph nodes and edges, the classification of a new instance conceptually becomes a problem of link-based similarity estimation that can be effectively resolved using the proposed fuzzy qualitative model. This new approach has been evaluated against the existing rule-based met hod, revealing significant advantages of the present work. The analysis used the Scopus (Elsevier) database of scientific literature, calculating bibliometric indices (primary production, average citations per document, percentage variation, SJR, etc.) for the geographical domain of Europe during the period 2002-2007. The aim of the study is to supplement previous works on the subject which have mostly been limited to a particular type of energy without addressing the area as a whole, as well as to expand their methodological approaches in both the data retrieval strategy and the calculation of indices. The results show Europe to be well positioned globally in this scientific field - in production, in citations, and in impact. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. Author Full Name(s): Auer, Matthew R.; Cox, Michael Language: English Document Type: Article Author Keywords: Global warming; Information retrieval; Research organizations; Research results; United States of America KeyWords Plus: SCIENCE; POLICY Abstract: Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to analyze the sources and qualities of information on climate change commissioned by the US Congress from its affiliated research bodies. Design/methodology/approach - Cited material in reports commissioned by Congress from three legislative research bodies were categorized and tallied for the years 1990-2005. Qualities of cited material, such as indicators of primary- level data analysis and references to peer-reviewed academic scholarship were considered. Findings - Of the three agencies, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) makes reference to peer-reviewed academic scholarship most often. Nevertheless, only around a quarter of all cited material in CBO reports are from academic journals and comparatively few cites are to articles in top-tier journals. The Congressional Research Service (CRS) cites its own past publications more often than it cites peer-reviewed scholarship. Research limitations/implications - Refereed academic journals are not the only source of rigorous scientific information in the reference materials used by the three legislative research bodies. Primary-level data are found in governmental gray literature, and these data are analyzed by the legislative research bodies in their reports to Congress. The research bodies also make use of peer- reviewed research by private research organizations, though these latter materials may not be published in academic journals. Further research is needed to determine whether and to what extent the legislative research bodies' reports are consequential in shaping lawmakers' deliberations versus other sources of information and persuasion, e.g. reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, news reportage, constituent perspectives, witness testimony in hearings, campaign contributions, etc. Practical implications - Legislative research organizations are official conveyors of policy-relevant information to Congress. It is reasonable to expect these organizations to provide competent analyses derived from peer-reviewed science. The present paper suggests that commissioned reports by these organizations vary in terms of the range of source materials relied on, but reference materials are seldom derived from top-tier academic journals. At least one research body, the CRS, frequently refers to its own reports as a major source for information on climate change. Two out of three of the legislative support bodies make greater use of governmental gray literature versus academic scholarship. Originality/value - References to purported shortcomings in the legislative research bodies' technical/analytical capacities exist in the public affairs literature, but are anecdotal. The present paper offers an empirical exploration of this concern, focusing on the most important environmental problem of the time. Key to supporting these knowledge building activities is the development of an infrastructure that supports effective knowledge management. This paper presents the framework for an information management technology called DesignWebs, which assimilates the product structures from the evolving set of documents and discussions about an engineering artifact. A Design Web enables users to see evolving connections between concepts by using a navigable web-based interface that synthesizes the design knowledge from multiple sources of information. The recent inclusion of Computational and Mathematical Organization Theory (CMOT) into the Social Science Citation Index offers a good reason to take stock of what has happened since the foundation of the journal and to analyze its intellectual structure and development from 1995 to 2008. We identify the most influential publications by means of citation analysis and show that a core of codified knowledge has developed over time. Additionally, we provide empirical support for the characteristics generally ascribed to the journal such as multidisciplinarity. Finally, we depict the main research foci in CMOT's intellectual structure employing a co-citation analysis of publications and investigate their development over time. Overall, our quantitative review shows CMOT to be thematically focused on organizations, groups and networks while being remarkably diverse in terms of theoretical approaches and methods used. METHODS: From the Portal da Coordenacao de Aperfeicoamento de Pessoal de Nivel Superior (Portal of Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel), 934 authors were identified in 2008, of whom 819 were analyzed. The h-index of each professor was obtained through the Web of Science using search algorithms controlling for namesakes and alternative spellings of their names. For each Brazilian region and for the country as a whole, we adjusted an exponential probability density function to provide the population parameters and rate of decline by region. Ranking measures were identified using the complement of the cumulative probability function and the hierarchy function among authors according to the h-index by region. RESULTS: Among the professors analyzed, 29.8% had no citation record in Web of Science (h=0). The mean h for the country was 3.1, and the region with greatest mean was the southern region (h=4.7). The median h for the country was 3.1, and the greatest median was for the southern region (3.2). Standardizing populations to one hundred, the first rank in the country was h=16, but stratification by region shows that, within the northeastern, southeastern and southern regions, a greater value is necessary for achieving the first rank. In the southern region, the index needed to achieve the first rank was h=24. CONCLUSIONS: Most of the Brazilian Collective Health authors, if assessed on the basis of the Web of Science h-index, did not exceed h=5. Regional differences exist, with the southeastern and northeastern regions being similar and the southern region being outstanding. The web-based feature means that information propagation within each community is highly facilitated, promoting complex collective dynamics in view of information exchange. In this work, we focus on a community of scientists and study, in particular, how the awareness of a scientific paper is spread. Our work is based on the web usage statistics obtained from the PLoS Article Level Metrics dataset compiled by PLoS. The cumulative number of HTML views was found to follow a long tail distribution which is reasonably well- fitted by a lognormal one. We modeled the diffusion of information by a random multiplicative process, and thus extracted the rates of information spread at different stages after the publication of a paper. We found that the spread of information displays two distinct decay regimes: a rapid downfall in the first month after publication, and a gradual power law decay afterwards. We identified these two regimes with two distinct driving processes: a short-term behavior driven by the fame of a paper, and a long-term behavior consistent with citation statistics. The patterns of information spread were found to be remarkably similar in data from different journals, but there are intrinsic differences for different types of web usage (HTML views and PDF downloads versus XML). These similarities and differences shed light on the theoretical understanding of different complex systems, as well as a better design of the corresponding web applications that is of high potential marketing impact. Doctoral students' research productivity: An analysis of publications in tourism and hospitality journals. JOURNAL OF HOSPITALITY LEISURE SPORT & TOURISM EDUCATION 10 (1): 63-71. Author Full Name(s): Chung, Jin Young; Petrick, James Language: English Document Type: Article Author Keywords: research productivity; zero-truncated count model KeyWords Plus: RANKING Abstract: While some tourism and hospitality researchers have examined the research productivity at the level of institutions or scholars holding a PhD degree, few studies on PhD students' research productivity have been conducted. The reason for this absence could be because it is difficult to get comprehensive PhD student lists for all academic institutions. This study therefore attempted to overcome this obstacle. With an alternative regression model (zero-truncated count model), this study aimed to identify significant factors influencing the students' scholarly publications in major tourism and hospitality journals. The results showed that two variables - productivity of co- author(s) and US-model institutions - significantly influenced PhD student publications in the tourism literature. (WoS4 used a period for this.) It may therefore occur that it is not possible to parse unambiguously whether a new line is a continuation of the previous address or a new address. I used the following rules: If author names are coupled to the addresses, these are placed between brackets and these brackets can be used for an unambiguous delineation of the address information. The relations between authors and corporate addresses are stored in a file csau.dbf in this case. If there are no author names, the address field can be on one or two lines. The following rules are used: 1. if the line ends with a comma, the next line is considered as a continuation of the address information; 2. if the next line contains no commas or only a single one, this line is also considered as a continuation of the previous one; 3. in other cases, the two lines are each time concatenated and tested on the number of commas. If this number is five or larger, the two lines are considered as separate addresses. The number of five is chosen because in some cases four commas can still be considered as a single address, but six commas almost never. However, errors are possible on both sides because some addresses contain only two commas and some individual addresses more than four. In some cases of older records, the field for the responding author (RP) contains additional information (Costas & Iribarren-Maestro, Scientometrics, 2007). This field is tested on whether the first subfield (the organization) is the same and similarly for the country name. A new address is only added if this test fails. The number of this address (CSNR in CS.DBF) is 999 in order to distinguish it clearly from the other addresses numbered consecutively and harvested from the address fields (C1). The above procedure with the test for the five commas will unavoidably generate some error. However, this is a consequence of the restructuration of the address field in the new WoS5 interface. From the files which I tested, I also noted that short address information may be country specific (e.g., Germany). Most addresses, however, contain three or four commas. Two consecutive addresses with two commas (and no author information between brackets) can be erroneously concatenated. Addresses with five or more commas may erroneously be distinguished as two addresses (if the line break is not at a comma, etc.). I will react on feedback suggesting improvements. The different programs using the address field will be replaced as there is demand for this. All programs will now be Win32 although they keep the same user interface (using the C-prompt). The upgrade to Win32 is needed because 64-bits computers can no longer handle the 16-bits programs under DOS. I replaced this morning ISI.exe at http://www.leydesdorff.net/software/isi with a new version. Feedback is appreciated. I'll replace the other programs before December 31 when v4 becomes obsolete. At the moment obviously errors occur in the processing of the data. Different citation counts are obtained depending on the origin of the information, e.g. either the full record or the citation report. Apart from this articles are incorrectly ordered for the calculation of the h-index. Furthermore a couple of scientists have already contacted us and complained about noticed errors in the bibliographic records, where co-authors were erased but the records still remained in place (therefore independent from journal coverage!). Consequently the new version of Web of Science should not be used for any evaluation purposes at the moment. Researchers have to get access to large, distributed data sets on, say, global warming or gene sequences, and use a set of tools and technologies for data processing and information visualization. Vast amounts of data need to be collected, curated, stored, managed, and preserved to ensure perpetual access to them over the Internet. E-Science has implications for both researchers and information professionals such as librarians and data archivists. Both groups need information management and computational skills to deal with massive data sets along with some understanding of intellectual property rights, open access and data literacy issues, among others. Few schools in the US and elsewhere are already offering graduate degrees in ?E-Science Librarianship? and one is likely to come across ads of job descriptions for ?cloud librarians?. As organizers, we thought this is an opportune time for IMCW2012 to review the challenges for research libraries and information professionals in the the collaborative, networked, and data intensive e-science environment. Such challenges range from developing data repositories for e-science to using digital tools for data processing and visualization, and from collection development and management to reference services and information literacy. Because IMCW2012 coincides with the 40th anniversary of the foundation of the Department of Information Management of Hacettepe University, to commemorate this event we organized an international ex libris competition with the theme ?information management?. The winning art works of ex libris will be exhibited during the symposium. Main topics of the Symposium include (but not limited with) the following: Data Management Challenges in E-Science Data Life-cycle in E-Science Information Discovery, Organization, and Retrieval in E-Science Information Management and E-Science Information Architecture for E-Science Education for Information Management and E-Science Scholarly Publishing, Open Access and Digital Repositories in E-Science Digital Preservation of Scientific and Cultural Heritage Social and Cultural Issues and E-Science In addition to papers, short papers (pecha-kucha), posters, workshops and panels on e-science and information management, general papers on information management are also welcome. Student papers and posters will also be considered. Please use the template available in the Symposium web site to prepare your contributions and proposals, and send them to us using the Conference Management Software (openconf). Accepted papers and posters will appear in the proceedings book to be published by Springer under its CCIS series (pending) and the Symposium web site. Important Dates First Call: July 2011 Second Call: October 2011 Third Call: December 2011 Last date to send papers and posters: 23 January 2012 Authors notification: 19 March 2012 Final papers submission and registration: 7 May 2012 Symposium: 19-21 September 2012 Looking forward to your contributions to and participation in the Symposium. I updated and recompiled the following programs: 1. ISI.exe for the organization of downloads into the structure of relational database management; 2. Instcoll.exe for the network analysis at the institutional level; 3. Intcoll.exe for the network analysis at the country level; 2. Cities1.exe for the (Google) mapping of cities and networks (Leydesdorff & Persson, JASIST, 2010); 3. Inst1.exe for the similar mapping at the institutional level. The latter two programs can also used for the mapping of excellence at the city or institutional level: http://www.leydesdorff.net/topcity (Bornmann & Leydesdorff (JASIST, 2011) and http://www.leydesdorff.net/mapping_excellence (Bornmann et al., JoI, 2011). The programs have been recompiled using Win32 software instead of the 16-bit Dos. Thus, one can run them under a 64-bits operating system. If you run the program from the C-prompt it either finishes or provides an informative error message. The fields containing information other than addresses were not changed. I therefore do not intend to recompile the other programs, but one should be aware that there can be incompatibilities between downloads in v4 or v5 in the address information. The Yule- Simon model and Lotka's square law were applied to the publication data obtained from 2175 articles from 11 KM/IC journals. Based on the findings, it was concluded that the KM/IC discipline represents a very young, attractive academic field that welcomes contributions from a variety of academics and practitioners. In their paper acceptance decisions, KM/IC journal editors are not biased towards a small group of highly productive researchers, which is a positive sign that the field has been progressing in the right direction. The discipline is driven more by academics than by practitioners, and the distribution of articles is more concentrated among a few academic but not practitioner institutions. It was also observed that the Yule-Simon model and Lotka's square law may produce different distributions with respect to institutions. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. A high correlation between the h index and its variants would indicate that the h index variants hardly provide added information to the h index. This meta-analysis included 135 correlation coefficients from 32 studies. The studies were based on a total sample size of N = 9005; on average, each study had a sample size of n = 257. The results of a three-level cross-classified mixed-effects meta-analysis show a high correlation between the h index and its variants: Depending on the model, the mean correlation coefficient varies between 8 and 9. This means that there is redundancy between most of the h index variants and the h index. There is a statistically significant study-to- study variation of the correlation coefficients in the information they yield. The lowest correlation coefficients with the h index are found for the h index variants MII and m index. Hence, these h index variants make a non-redundant contribution to the h index. Yet, in many cases, the identities of actors influence these processes. When identity matters, high-status actors often obtain more favorable classifications. We examine these processes in the context of the Motion Picture Association of America's parental guidance classifications of movies (G, PG, R, NC-17). We find that, conditional on a given level of content, films distributed by the Association's members and those that involve more central producers and directors receive more lenient classifications than those carried by independent distributors and involving more peripheral personnel. Conversely, and again conditional on content, films involving directors with a history of producing R- rated features receive more restrictive ratings. We discuss the mechanisms that might account for these effects. Regardless of the mechanism, however, because ratings influence revenue and consequently profitability, the movie certification system in the United States places independent distributors and peripheral individuals at a disadvantage, relative to their larger and more central rivals. This opinion is shared by this community in a manner it could be treated as a paradigm. In reality, however, Zipf's law is not always observed (even as an approximation), and we prefer to adopt a classification of the CSD into three classes. In this work, we present the characteristics of these classes and give some examples for them. We use the Israeli system of cities as an interesting case study in which the same ensemble of cities passes from one class to another. We relate this change to the urbanization process that occurred in Israel from the 1960s onwards. It uses bibliometric citation analysis as its primary investigative method. The basis of the citation analysis was formed by articles coming from a number of electronic publication databases that contained the term "international entrepreneurship" in their titles, and which could thus be clearly categorized into this research field. The 40 publications identified in this manner resulted in a database of 2,659 citations. Upon observing the citation analysis and the clusters of topics that result, it becomes clear that the research on international entrepreneurship is influenced by the scientific fields of international business, entrepreneurship theory, SME internationalization, and born global/international new venture theory. Source: JAMA-JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION Volume: 305 Issue: 21 Pages: 2200-2210 Published: JUN 1 2011 Abstract: Context Many biomarkers are proposed in highly cited studies as determinants of disease risk, prognosis, or response to treatment, but few eventually transform clinical practice. Objective To examine whether the magnitude of the effect sizes of biomarkers proposed in highly cited studies is accurate or overestimated. Data Sources We searched ISI Web of Science and MEDLINE until December 2010. Study Selection We included biomarker studies that had a relative risk presented in their abstract. Eligible articles were those that had received more than 400 citations in the ISI Web of Science and that had been published in any of 24 highly cited biomedical journals. We also searched MEDLINE for subsequent meta-analyses on the same associations (same biomarker and same outcome). Data Extraction In the highly cited studies, data extraction was focused on the disease/outcome, biomarker under study, and first reported relative risk in the abstract. From each meta-analysis, we extracted the overall relative risk and the relative risk in the largest study. Data extraction was performed independently by 2 investigators. Results We evaluated 35 highly cited associations. For 30 of the 35 (86%), the highly cited studies had a stronger effect estimate than the largest study; for 3 the largest study was also the highly cited study; and only twice was the effect size estimate stronger in the largest than in the highly cited study. For 29 of the 35 (83%) highly cited studies, the corresponding meta-analysis found a smaller effect estimate. Only 15 of the associations were nominally statistically significant based on the largest studies, and of those only 7 had a relative risk point estimate greater than 1.37. Conclusion Highly cited biomarker studies often report larger effect estimates for postulated associations than are reported in subsequent meta-analyses evaluating the same associations. Three cognate units of assessment are examined in detail: business and management, economics and econometrics, and accounting and finance. The main finding is that each of the three components of research activity (namely, research output, esteem and research environment) is highly correlated with various quantitative indicators. A further finding is that the judgement of the Research Assessment Exercise panels was biased in favour of Russell Group universities. There is also evidence of bias by the economics and econometrics panel. The results support the use of quantitative indicators in the research assessment process, particularly a journal quality index. Requiring the panels to take bibliometric indicators into account should help not only to reduce the workload of panels but also to mitigate the problem of implicit bias. The PRISMA and AMSTAR checklists were used to assess reporting characteristics and methodological quality, respectively. Results: A total of 369 SRs were identified, most (97.6%) of which used the terms systematic review or meta-analysis in the title. None of the reviews had been updated. Half (49.8%) were written by clinicians and nearly half (47.7%) were reported in specialty journals. The impact factors of 45.8% of the journals published in were zero. The most commonly treated conditions were diseases of the circulatory and digestive disease. Funding sources were not reported for any reviews. Most (68.8%) reported information about quality assessment, while less than half (43.6%) reported assessing for publication bias. Statistical mistakes appeared in one-third (29.3%) of reviews and most (91.9%) did not report on conflict of interest. Conclusions: While many SRs of TCM interventions have been published in Chinese journals, the quality of these reviews is troubling. As a potential key source of information for clinicians and researchers, not only were many of these reviews incomplete, some contained mistakes or were misleading. Focusing on improving the quality of SRs of TCM, rather than continuing to publish them in great quantity, is urgently needed in order to increase the value of these studies.
