The Rise of China: Scientific Publications Follows Economic Growth

I was able to merge and plot country-level publication data (from 
SCImago) with economic data from the World Bank (GNI per capita, PPP).  
The result shows China -- and to a lesser extent, India, S. Korea and 
Brazil -- going through massive scientific growth.  You can view that 
growth in a blog post, which includes a link to a dynamic time-series
