However, scientific documents that are manually indexed with keyphrases are still in the minority. This article describes a new unsupervised method for automatic keyphrase extraction from scientific documents which yields a performance on a par with human indexers. The method is based on identifying references cited in the document to be indexed and, using the keyphrases assigned to those references, for generating a set of high-likelihood keyphrases for the document. We have evaluated the performance of the proposed method by using it to automatically index a third-party testset of research documents. Reported experimental results show that the performance of our method, measured in terms of consistency with human indexers, is competitive with that achieved by state-of-the-art supervised methods. In order to address the challenges and current knowledge gaps in the knowledge utilization field in nursing, a comprehensive picture of the current state of the field is required. Methods: Bibliometric analyses were used to map knowledge utilization literature in nursing as an international field of study, and to identify the structure of its scientific community. Findings: Analyses of bibliographic data for 433 articles from the period 1945-2004 demonstrated three trends: (1) there has been significant recent growth and interest in this field, (2) the structure of the scientific knowledge utilization community is evolving, and (3) the Web of Science does not index the majority of journals where this literature is published. Conclusions: In order to enhance the accessibility and profile of this literature, and nursing's scientific literature at large, we encourage the International Academy of Nursing Editors to work collaboratively to increase the number of journals indexed in the Web of Science. This article presents the findings of a study that analyzed regional and institutional contributions to major research journals in the hospitality and tourism field. The empirical findings show that North America, and in particular the United States, has the largest regional and national share of editors, associate editors, and editorial board members, demonstrating the country's clear academic leadership. When individual institutes are considered, it is evident that very few universities in the world can demonstrate leadership and that those that do are naturally universities that have a major specialization in tourism and hospitality. This event took place at the University of Aveiro and had as a priority the implementation of a monitoring of evaluative nature, accompanied by a critical reflection on the conference and on the very process of evaluation. The evaluation process of the symposium presented a dual purpose: (i) to emphasize the importance of evaluating the scientific meetings, as promoter of their quality improvement in future events and (ii) to validate an evaluative tool that may de used as an example and guidance for use in other scientific events. It should be noted, according to the study of reference, the advantage of using two evaluative phases, which allow not only the data validation, (and also data triangulation), but also the opportunity to present an initial analysis in the event, although a first and impressionistic analysis, creating excitement among the public and serving as a source of motivation, interest and reflection on their own evaluation process. This search focused on pressure ulcer (PU) care; journals and authors with the greatest contribution and impact were emphasized. DESIGN: Bibliometric evaluation. METHODS: Data encompassing the period from 1990 to 2009 were extracted from the Science Citation Index online version. We analyzed selected documents with "pressure ulcer" as a part of the title, abstract, or key words and reported the following parameters: trends of publication output, document types, subject category, journal pattern, authorship, and research in nursing disciplines. RESULTS: The annual number of articles on PUs grew at a rapid rate, from approximately 39 in 1991 to 259 in 2009. The main subject categories in which research on PUs was conducted were surgery and nursing, each of which accounted for more than 10% of total articles. The United States was the dominant country in terms of volume of articles. The relationship between nurse staffing and PU-related outcomes is currently the major focus of PU nursing research, followed by risk assessment scale evaluations. CONCLUSION: We found that the number of PU-related publications has grown at a rapid rate over the past 20 years, reflecting an increasing awareness of the importance of PU prevention and management. Book series title: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology Language: English Document Type: Article Author Keywords: MeSH; Pubmed; Patent; Medline; Citation Abstract: Both patents and Medline are important document collections for discovering new relationships between chemicals and biology, searching for prior art for patent applications and retrieving background knowledge for current research activities. Finding relevance to a topic within patents is often made difficult by poor categorization, badly written descriptions, and even intentional obfuscation. Unlike patents, the Medline corpus has Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) keywords manually added to their articles, giving a medically relevant taxonomy to the 18 million article abstracts. Our work attempts to accurately recognize the citations made in patents to Medline-indexed articles, linking them to their corresponding PubMed ID and exploiting the associated MeSH to enhance patent search by annotating the referencing patents with their Medline citations' MeSH codes. The techniques, system features, and benefits are explained. It is expected to be at least as useful as the notorious h-index, at the same time avoiding some of its obvious drawbacks. However, surprisingly, the h-index is found to be quite a good indicator for majority of real-life citation data with their alleged Zipfian behaviour for which these drawbacks do not show up. The style of the paper was chosen deliberately somewhat frivolous to indicate that any attempt to characterize the scientific output of a researcher by just one number always has an element of a grotesque game in it and should not be taken too seriously. I hope this frivolous style will be perceived as a funny decoration only. Addresses: [Silagadze, Z. K.] Budker Inst Nucl Phys, Novosibirsk 630090, Russia; [Silagadze, Z. Language: English Document Type: Article KeyWords Plus: WEB-OF-SCIENCE; IMPACT FACTOR; WEAKNESSES; STRENGTHS; SCOPUS Abstract: Background: There exists a lack of knowledge regarding the quantity and quality of scientific yield in relation to individual cancer types. We aimed to measure the proportion, quality and relevance of oncology-related articles, and to relate this output to their associated disease burden. By incorporating the impact factor(IF) and Eigenfactor (TM)(EF) into our analysis we also assessed the relationship between these indices and the output under study. Methods: All publications in 2007 were retrieved for the 26 most common cancers. The top 20 journals ranked by IF and EF in general medicine and oncology, and the presence of each malignancy within these titles was analysed. Journals publishing most prolifically on each cancer were identified and their impact assessed. Principal Findings: 63260 (PubMed) and 126845 (WoS) entries were generated, respectively. 26 neoplasms accounted for 25% of total output from the top medical publications. 5 cancers dominated the first quartile of output in the top oncology journals; breast, prostate, lung, and intestinal cancer, and leukaemia. Journals associated with these cancers were associated with much higher IFs and EFs than those journals associated with the other cancer types under study, although these measures were not equivalent across all sub-specialties. In addition, yield on each cancer was related to its disease burden as measured by its incidence and prevalence. Conclusions: Oncology enjoys disproportionate representation in the more prestigious medical journals. 5 cancers dominate yield, although this attention is justified given their associated disease burden. The commonly used IF and the recently introduced EF do not correlate in the assessment of the preeminent oncology journals, nor at the level of individual malignancies; there is a need to delineate between proxy measures of quality and the relevance of output when assessing its merit. These results raise significant questions regarding the best method of assessment of research and scientific output in the field of oncology. These studies primarily compare the cluster solutions resulting from different similarity approaches, and give varying results. In this study we compare the accuracies of cluster solutions of a large corpus of 2,153,769 recent articles from the biomedical literature (2004-2008) using four similarity approaches: co-citation analysis, bibliographic coupling, direct citation, and a bibliographic coupling-based citation-text hybrid approach. Each of the four approaches can be considered a way to represent the research front in biomedicine, and each is able to successfully cluster over 92% of the corpus. Accuracies are compared using two metrics-within-cluster textual coherence as defined by the Jensen- Shannon divergence, and a concentration measure based on the grant-to- article linkages indexed in MEDLINE. Of the three pure citation-based approaches, bibliographic coupling slightly outperforms co-citation analysis using both accuracy measures; direct citation is the least accurate mapping approach by far. The hybrid approach improves upon the bibliographic coupling results in all respects. We consider the results of this study to be robust given the very large size of the corpus, and the specificity of the accuracy measures used. We present an extensive comparison between the use of MDS and the use of VOS for constructing bibliometric maps. In our theoretical analysis, we show the mathematical relation between the two techniques. In our empirical analysis, we use the techniques for constructing maps of authors, journals, and keywords. Two commonly used approaches to bibliometric mapping, both based on MDS, turn out to produce maps that suffer from artifacts. Maps constructed using VOS turn out not to have this problem. We conclude that in general maps constructed using VOS provide a more satisfactory representation of a dataset than maps constructed using well-known MDS approaches. Investment represents the share of journal self-citations that contribute to the impact factor. Benefit is defined as the ratio of journal impact factor including self- citations to journal impact factor without self-citations. Yield is the relationship between benefit and investment. I selected all journals included in 2008 in the Science Citation Index version of Journal Citation Reports. After deleting 482 records for reasons to be explained, I used a final set of 6,138 journals to study the distribution of the variables defined above. The distribution of benefit differed from the distribution of investment and yield. The top 20-ranked journals were not the same for all three variables. The yield of self-citations on the journal impact factor was, in general, very modest. Language: English Document Type: Article Author Keywords: International marketing; Marketing; Publications KeyWords Plus: EMPIRICAL-RESEARCH; METAANALYSIS; MANAGEMENT Abstract: Purpose - Growing globalization in recent decades has been responsible for the emergence of a new stream of research focusing on international marketing. However, compared to domestic marketing knowledge, this field has received relatively less attention from mainstream marketing journals. The purpose of this paper is to report the findings of a study that assesses the contribution of leading mainstream marketing journals to the international marketing discipline. Design/methodology/approach - A total of 508 international marketing-focused articles were identified from the top ten mainstream marketing journals during the period 1975-2004. Each article was content-analyzed in terms of six major aspects: article nature, authorship characteristics, research design, scope of research, research methodology, and thematic areas. Findings - The paper revealed that: although there was an increase in the number of articles with an international focus over time, in most journals their share was limited; most of the articles were of an empirical nature, with an increasing trend over time; articles were mainly written by multiple authors, who were in most cases US-based; research designs of the studies reported were increasingly more formalized and causal, as well as statistical and cross- sectional; the scope of research provided a balanced coverage of country settings, product groups, and units of analyses; methodological aspects, especially sample sizes, response rates, and analytical methods, improved over time; and a wide array of thematic areas was examined, with issues pertaining to the macro-environment, marketing mix, and buyer behaviour attracting heightened attention. Originality/value - Although many insightful attempts have been made in the past to review, assess, and consolidate extant research on international marketing, this paper focuses specifically on the contribution of top mainstream marketing journals to the international marketing field. This can assist in identifying possible gaps in the international marketing literature that have to be filled by future research on the subject. It specifically helps: to reveal the actual involvement of these influential journals as outlets for publishing research that focuses on international dimensions of marketing; to identify the characteristics of scholars publishing international marketing articles in such journals; to evaluate the methodological content of these international marketing-related articles; and to establish trends regarding the evolution of the international marketing field from the standpoint of leading mainstream journals. The methods used are peer review and bibliometric measures. In a divided discipline such as economics scientific knowledge is contested. So knowing which journals and departments are the best in terms of research is somewhat muddied. If the methods used to measure the production of quality scientific knowledge are tilted towards one of the contested approaches, the resulting quality rankings of journals and departments are tilted as well. So if the objective is the open-minded pursuit of the production of scientific knowledge, then it is important to have measures of quality that treat the different contested approaches equally. Our article explores this issue by examining the impact that a quality-equality bibliometric measure can have on the quality rankings of doctoral economic programs in the United States. Being distinct bodies of knowledge, it is possible that the processes of building scientific knowledge are different enough so to generate distinctly different referencing and citation practices. Therefore, a specific impact contribution score is necessary for ranking heterodox journals in terms of their contribution to building heterodox economics. If properly developed such a metric could also be used to produce a single overall quality-equality ranking of mainstream and heterodox journals. Utilizing citation data and peer evaluations of 62 heterodox economics journals, a research quality measure is developed and then used to rank the journals. The measure is then used in conjunction with the SSCI five-year impact factor to produce a comparative research quality-equality rankings of the 62 heterodox and the 192 mainstream journals in the SSCI. Yet the critique offered by heterodoxy speaks more widely. This study examines the diffusion of heterodox economic ideas beyond the immediate confines via an analysis of the citation of heterodox economic journals by other journals. The diffusion of heterodox economics across wider disciplines is traced utilizing data from Emerald, Wiley, and Sage bibliographic databases. Employing the techniques of social network analysis, key journals in the diffusion process are identified, with implications for heterodox economics publishing strategy and engagement in valuation processes. The main objective is to identify the international facet of research by following the flow of knowledge as expressed by the number of scientific publications, and then establishes the main geographical axes of output, showing the interrelationships of the domain, the intensity of these relations, and how the different types of collaboration are reflected in terms of visibility. Thus, the methodology has a twofold application, allowing us to detect significant differences that help characterize patterns of behaviour of a geographical system of output, along with the generation of representations that serve as interfaces for domain analysis and information retrieval. Its combination with pathfinder networks using pruning values r=infinity and q=n-1 makes manifest the essence of research in the domain represented, or what we might call the 'most salient structure'. The possible loss of structural information, caused by aggressive pruning in peripheral areas of the networks, is overcome by creating heliocentric maps for each category. The depictions obtained with this procedure become tools of great usefulness in view of their capacity to reveal the evolution of a given scientific domain over time, to show differences and similarities between different domains, and to suggest possible new lines for development. This article presents the scientogram of the United States for the year 2002, identifying its essential structure. We also show the scientograms of China for the years 1990 and 2002, in order to study its particular national evolution. Finally, we try to detect patterns and tendencies in the three scientograms that would allow one to predict or flag the evolution of a scientific domain. In order to define overweight, the "body mass index" (BMI) in kg/m(2) was introduced. Methods: The present study evaluates the quantity and quality of the published literature available, and its changes over the years. Basic bibliographic methods and recent visualizing techniques were used in order to analyse and categorise research in the field of the BMI. The data were extracted from "ISI Web of Science" by Thomson Reuters beginning from 1900 to 2008 by defined search terms. Results: There are 63,845 articles on the subject available. It shows, that the number of annual publications is increasing continuously, starting in 1972. The bibliometric methods and the application of density equalising maps reveal global research productivity and citation activity with emphasis on the USA. Conclusion: The present study supplies a first bibliometric approach to visualise research activity in the field of BMI. Furthermore, it provides data that can be used for the identification of research clusters and to locate regions where more research needs to be done. Despite the controversial discussion, the analysed data suggest that the BMI is still an important, simple, and inexpensive measure for the assessment of the nutritional status that comes to a worldwide use. The framework assesses the current position of the journal, its trends and the reasons behind the trends. The Journal of Banking and Finance is found to be one of the leading journals in the field of finance and its influence is increasing. In fact, it appears to be part of a group of leading journals that is separating itself from the other journals that are generally regarded as peers. Finally, the Journal of Banking and Finance is found to be the only leading finance journal with a high concentration of banking articles, making it a primary outlet for influential articles in this area. Instead, some commentators indicate that focus on the article's contribution would stimulate a more polycentric approach to research. In the current study we investigate the role of an article's contribution on its citations. In doing this, we gather data from European Accounting Review, an outlet that plays an instrumental role in the dissemination of Europe-based accounting research and that holds a long tradition of tolerance towards the use of diverse research methods and paradigms. We employ proxies to evaluate the objective contribution of an article as well as author reputation. Our findings suggest that articles are cited for their contribution rather than as a result of the characteristics of their authors. Our study also poses some suggestions to capture the multifaceted nature of research performance. Based on 52 variables the articles were classified into three categories of "adequate", "relatively adequate" and "inadequate". Data analysis was done using Chi-square statistical test. Results: The mean number of authors for each article was 2.9 +/- 0.84. Failure rate to report the "reliability" of the instrument of measurement was 96%, followed by failure to justify the sample size (93%). Justification for publication was not reported in 73% of the articles and 87% didn't cite the limitations and valuable findings of the study. No statistically significant association was found between the quality of published articles and study designs, number of authors and references (P<0.3). Conclusion: Significant quality related issues of concern were observed in articles published in Iranian dental journals. Attention to and rectification of these, by authors, reviewers and editors will improve the quality of future publications. A total of 2052 articles appeared in JCB from the first issue in February 1981 to the end of 2009. The number of articles by volume increased from 50 in 1981 to 93 in 2002 and then declined to around 70. From 1981 to 2009, article size varied around a mean of 11 pages (pre-2005 format) but mean number of authors and references by article increased by a factor of 1.87 and 2.20, respectively. JCB content is predominated numerically by taxonomy and systematics (36% of all articles), but other research areas (anatomy, physiology, development, growth-reproduction, life history, behavior, ecology, conservation) were also represented from the outset. JCB's 2-year impact factor increased significantly from 1991 to 2009. Longer-term impact of JCB is evident in the fact that almost half of all JCB articles were cited in 2009 and that the mean age of those cited articles was only slightly less than the mean age of all JCB articles (12.6 vs 13.3 years). However, citations to JCB differ widely across research areas, with articles in taxonomy cited on average at less than half the rate of articles in the areas of ecology or conservation. The most cited JCB articles by combination of research area and decade of publication deal primarily with higher crustaceans (malacostracans) and are reviews or original research articles with cross-disciplinary appeal. Language: English Document Type: Article Author Keywords: Journal assessment; Active scholars; Endogenous ranking; Tiers; ABS; ISI impact factors; Nested random-effects regression KeyWords Plus: PATTERNS; CONTRIBUTORS; AUTHORS; IMPACT Abstract: This study uses respondent data from a web-based survey of active finance scholars (45% response rate from 37 countries) to endogenously rank 83 finance journals by quality and importance. journals are further tiered into four groups (A, B, C and D) and stratified into "upper", "middle" and "lower" tier categories (e.g. A+, A and A-) by estimating a nested regression with random journal-within-tier effects. The comprehensive and endogenous ranking of finance journals based on the Active Scholar Assessment (ASA) methodology can help authors evaluate the strategic aspects of placing their research, facilitate assessment of research achievement by tenure and promotion committees: and assist university libraries in better managing their journal resources. Study findings from active researchers in the field also provide useful guidance to editorial boards for enhancing their journal standing. Crown Copyright (C) 2010 Published by Elsevier B.V. I evaluated whether top highly cited scientists are likely to occupy these positions. Of the current leaders of 96 U. S. high research activity universities, only 6 presidents or chancellors were found among the 4009 U. S. scientists listed in the ISIHighlyCited.com database. Of the current leaders of 77 UK universities, only 2 vice-chancellors were found among the 483 UK scientists listed in the same database. In a sample of 100 top-cited clinical medicine scientists and 100 top-cited biology and biochemistry scientists, only 1 and 1, respectively, had served at any time as president of a university. Among the leaders of 25 U. S. universities with the highest citation volumes, only 12 had doctoral degrees in life, natural, physical or computer sciences, and 5 of these 12 had a Hirsch citation index m < 1.0. The participation of highly cited scientists in the top leadership of universities is limited. This could have consequences for the research and overall mission of universities.-Ioannidis, J. P. A. The integration of fuzzy Delphi method, the Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) technique, and the analytic network process (ANP) is employed to construct a technology selection model regarding the economic and industrial prospects. On the other hand, the patent co-citation approach (PCA) is applied to objectively draw key technology fields as technology alternatives for the technology selection model from patent data. The emerging organic light emitting diode (OLED) display technology is used as a case in order to verify the applicability of proposed a novel hybrid MCDM method for the best technology selection. The result of this hybrid process can help top managers of technology-based companies or policy makers of governments to more objectively and effectively determine future research and development direction. There is also significant pressure exerted on researchers to produce publications. Thus, the purpose of this study was to survey corresponding authors in published medical journals to determine their opinion on publication impact in relation to performance review and promotion. Methods: Cross-sectional survey of corresponding authors of original research articles published in June 2007 among 72 medical journals. Measurement outcomes included the number of publications, number of authors, authorship order and journal impact factor in relation to performance review and promotion. Results: Of 687 surveys, 478 were analyzed (response rate 69.6%). Corresponding authors self-reported that number of publications (78.7%), journal impact factor (67.8%) and being the first author (75.9%) were most influential for their annual performance review and assessment. Only 17.6% of authors reported that the number of authors on a manuscript was important criteria for performance review and assessment. A higher percentage of Asian authors reported that the number of authors was key to performance review and promotion (41.4% versus 7.8 to 22.2%). compared to authors from other countries. Conclusions: The number of publications, authorship order and journal impact factor were important factors for performance reviews and promotion at academic and non-academic institutes. The number of authors was not identified as important criteria. These factors may be contributing to the increase in the number of authors per publication. Careers of an elite cohort of U.S. basic life science postdoctoral fellows and the influence of their mentor's citation record. BMC MEDICAL EDUCATION 10: art. no.-80. Author Full Name(s): Levitt, David G. Language: English Document Type: Article KeyWords Plus: BIOMEDICAL-RESEARCH; INDEX Abstract: Background: There is general agreement that the number of U. S. science PhDs being trained far exceeds the number of future academic positions. One suggested approach to this problem is to significantly reduce the number of PhD positions. A counter argument is that students are aware of the limited academic positions but have chosen a PhD track because it opens other, non-academic, opportunities. The latter view requires that students have objective information about what careers options will be available for them. Methods: The scientific careers of the 1992-94 cohort of NIH National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) Kirchstein-NRSA F32 postdoctoral fellows (PD) was determined by following their publications (PubMed), grants (NIH and NSF), and faculty and industry positions through 2009. These basic life science PDs receive support through individual grant applications and represent the most successful class of NIH PDs as judged by academic careers and grants. The sex dependence of the career and grant success and the influence of the PD mentor's citation record were also determined Results: Of the 439 1992-94 NIGMS F32 fellows, the careers of 417 could be determined. Although females had significantly higher rates of dropping out of science (22% females, 9% males) there was no significant difference in the fraction of females that ended up as associate or full professors at research universities (22.8% females, 29.1% for males). More males then females ended up in industry (34% males, 22% females). Although there was no significant correlation between male grant success and their mentor's publication record (h index, citations, publications), there was a significant correlation for females. Females whose mentor's h index was in the top quartile were nearly 3 times as likely to receive a major grant as those whose mentors were in the bottom quartile (38.7% versus 13.3%). Conclusions: Sixteen years after starting their PD, only 9% of males had dropped out of science. More females (28%) have dropped out of science, primarily because fewer went into industry positions. The mentor's publication record does not affect the future grant success of males but it has a dramatic effect on female grant success. Complex regimes can emerge when three independent sources of variance interact. In our model, researchers can be considered as the nodes that carry the science system. Research is geographically situated with site-specific skills, tacit knowledge and infrastructures. Second, the emergent science level refers to the formal communication of codified knowledge published in journals. Third, the socio-economic dynamics indicate the ways in which knowledge production relates to society. Although Biotechnology, Genomics, and Nanotechnology can all be characterised by rapid growth and divergent dynamics, the regimes differ in terms of self-organization among these three sources of variance. The scope of opportunities for researchers to contribute within the constraints of the existing body of knowledge are different in each field. Furthermore, the relevance of the context of application contributes to the knowledge dynamics to various degrees. at http://arxiv.org/abs/1101.2591 ** apologies for cross-postings -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Inspired by the PageRank and HITS (hubs and authorities) algorithms for Web search, we propose a structural reranking approach to ad- hoc retrieval that applies to settings with no hyperlink information. We reorder the documents in an initially retrieved set by exploiting implicit asymmetric relationships among them. We consider generation links, which indicate that the language model induced from one document assigns high probability to the text of another. We study a number of reranking criteria based on measures of centrality in the graphs formed by generation links, and show that integrating centrality into standard language-model-based retrieval is quite effective at improving precision at top ranks; the best resultant performance is comparable, and often superior, to that of a state-of-the-art pseudo-feedback-based retrieval approach. In addition, we demonstrate the merits of our language- model-based method for inducing interdocument links by comparing it to previously suggested notions of interdocument similarities (e.g., cosines within the vector-space model). We also show that our methods for inducing centrality are substantially more effective than approaches based on document-specific characteristics, several of which are novel to this study. However, the question of how to utilize linkage information from the citation graph to facilitate literature retrieval still remains largely unanswered. In this paper, given the context of biomedical literature retrieval, we first conduct a case study in order to find out whether applying PageRank and HITS algorithms directly to the citation graph is the best way of utilizing citation linkage information for improving biomedical literature retrieval. Second, we propose a probabilistic combination framework for integrating citation information into the content-based information retrieval weighting model. Based on the observations of the case study, we present two strategies for modeling the linkage information contained in the citation graph. The proposed framework provides a theoretical support for the combination of content and linkage information. Under this framework, exhaustive parameter tuning can be avoided. Extensive experiments on three TREC Genomics collections demonstrate the advantages and effectiveness of our proposed methods. Crown Copyright (C) 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. However, a scholar may be highly cited but not highly regarded: popularity and prestige are not identical measures of esteem. In this study we define popularity as the number of times an author is cited and prestige as the number of times an author is cited by highly cited papers. Information retrieval (IR) is the test field. We compare the 40 leading researchers in terms of their popularity and prestige over time. Some authors are ranked high on prestige but not on popularity, while others are ranked high on popularity but not on prestige. We also relate measures of popularity and prestige to date of Ph.D. award, number of key publications, organizational affiliation, receipt of prizes/honors, and gender. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Author Full Name(s): Franceschet, Massimo Language: English Document Type: Article Author Keywords: Research evaluation; Bibliometric indicators; Citation distributions; Power law distributions KeyWords Plus: SCIENTIFIC IMPACT; RANDOM NETWORKS; H-INDEX; DISTRIBUTIONS; OUTPUT Abstract: Computer science is a relatively young discipline combining science, engineering, and mathematics. The main flavors of computer science research involve the theoretical development of conceptual models for the different aspects of computing and the more applicative building of software artifacts and assessment of their properties. In the computer science publication culture, conferences are an important vehicle to quickly move ideas, and journals often publish deeper versions of papers already presented at conferences. These peculiarities of the discipline make computer science an original research field within the sciences, and, therefore, the assessment of classical bibliometric laws is particularly important for this field. In this paper, we study the skewness of the distribution of citations to papers published in computer science publication venues (journals and conferences). We find that the skewness in the distribution of mean citedness of different venues combines with the asymmetry in citedness of articles in each venue, resulting in a highly asymmetric citation distribution with a power law tail. Furthermore, the skewness of conference publications is more pronounced than the asymmetry of journal papers. Finally, the impact of journal papers, as measured with bibliometric indicators, largely dominates that of proceeding papers. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. In the past decade, rheumatology in China has achieved great advances. However, scientific publications on rheumatology in the 3 major regions of China - Mainland (ML), Hong Kong (HK), and Taiwan (TW) - are unknown. We assessed the performance of rheumatology research in China from 2000 to 2009. Methods. Twenty-two journals included in the rheumatology category of the Journal Citation Reports database were selected. We analyzed the following measures for 2000-2009: (1) total number of articles originating from ML, HK, and TW; (2) impact factor (IF) of those articles; (3) total number of citations and average number of citations per article; and (4) number of articles about clinical trials, randomized controlled trials (RCT), and case reports. We also noted the total number of articles from the 3 regions published in 10 top- ranking journals. Results. There were 788 articles for the 3 regions of China, including 259 from ML, 372 from TW, and 157 from HK, with a positive trend between the years 2000 to 2009. From 2006 on, published articles from ML exceeded those from HK, and in 2008, published articles from ML exceeded those from TW. HK had the highest average IF and highest average citations of each article compared with articles from ML and TW. TW published the most RCT, clinical trials, and case reports, as well as the most articles in the 10 top-ranking journals in the last decade, followed by ML and HK. Conclusion. Chinese contributions to the field of rheumatology have increased rapidly since 2000, particularly from ML. HK had the highest quality research output according to average IF and average citations per article. From this perspective, the size of samples matters only for the identification of significant differences and estimating margins of error. Using the percentile rank approach, differences among citation distributions can be studied non-parametrically and in a single scheme. Comparison among the sets clarifies that the different sizes of samples affect the weighing of the probabilities and therefore the rankings. We distinguish among (1) the normalization of papers against external reference sets, (2) normalization in terms of frequencies relative to the margin-totals of independent versus dependent samples, and (3) the potentially normative definition of percentile rank classes for the evaluation (e.g., top-1% most highly cited, median, etc.). When the sets to be evaluated are considered as subsamples of a single sample, the consequent citation indicator can be negatively correlated to citation indicators used hitherto. The citation impact of Open Access agricultural research A comparison between OA and non-OA publications. ONLINE INFORMATION REVIEW 34 (5): 772-785 Author Full Name(s): Kousha, Kayvan; Abdoli, Mahshid Language: English Document Type: Article Author Keywords: Open systems; Electronic publishing; Archiving; Research; Agricultural KeyWords Plus: GOOGLE SCHOLAR CITATIONS; ARTICLES Abstract: Purpose - The main purpose of this study is to assess the citation advantage for self-archived Open Access (OA) agriculture research against its non-OA counterparts. Design/methodology/approach - At the article level, the paper compared the citation counts of self-archived research with non-OA articles based upon a sample of 400 research articles from ISI-indexed (ISI, Institute for Scientific Information) agriculture journals in 2005. At the journal level the paper compared impact factors (IFs) of OA against non-OA agriculture journals from 2005 to 2007 as reported by the ISI Journal Citation Reports. The paper also sought evidence of citation impact based on a random sample of 100 OA and 100 non-OA publications from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in 2005. It used both ISI and Scopus databases for citation counting and also Google and Google Scholar for locating the self-archived articles published in the non-OA journals. Findings - The results showed that there is an obvious citation advantage for self-archived agriculture articles as compared to non-OA articles. Out of a random sample of 400 articles published in non-OA agriculture journals, about 14 per cent were OA and had a median citation count of four whereas the median for non-OA articles was two. However, at the journal level the average IF for OA agriculture journals from 2005 to 2007 was 0.29, considerably lower than the average IF for non-OA journals (0.65). Finally it found that FAO publications which were freely accessible online tended to attract more citations than non-OA publications in the same year and had a mean citation count of 1.73 whereas the mean for non-OA publications was 0.28. Originality/value - Self-archived agriculture research articles tended to attract higher citations than their non-OA counterparts. This knowledge of the citation impact of OA agricultural research gives a better understanding about the potential effect of self-archiving on the citation impact. Language: English Document Type: Article Author Keywords: Supply chain management; Serials; Research KeyWords Plus: ECONOMICS JOURNALS; RELATIVE IMPACTS; PRODUCTIVITY Abstract: Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to provide rankings of quality of peer reviewed periodicals for faculty research use, rankings of usefuless of both peer reviewed and non-peer reviewed periodicals for teaching and outreach purposes, and rankings of usefulness of search engines for finding articles. Design/methodology/approach - An online survey was conducted during the Autumn Semester of 2006.82 periodicals were identified as relevant to the Supply Chain Management field. Respondents were asked to rank their top used journals in terms of use for teaching, outreach and research. Findings - A total of 143 surveys were completed. Journal of Business Logistics, Harvard Business Review, and International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management were the top three ranked journals in the composite index. EBSCO Business Source Premier, ProQuest, and Google Scholar were the top three search engines used to find logistics and SCM articles. Research limitations/implications - A clear global consensus is forming on the top journals for SCM. However, the emergence of Operations Management/Operations Research Journals into the rankings is an important trend. There was also the absence of previously ranked journals as the field evolved from transportation and distribution to logistics to SCM. Originality/value - This paper is the largest survey completed to date in the field and substantially updates previous surveys. All academics who are active in SCM will find value in this paper. Both technological improvements (due to the Internet and the web 2.0) and new theoretical frameworks (e.g. open innovation, open access initiatives, and crowd-sourcing) call for the exploration of new models of scientific/academic knowledge evaluation. These new models aim at improving the quality and the reliability of traditional review processes in the publishing industry. Analyzing second-hand data and a representative sample of review models, we demonstrate that the impacts of the Internet and the Web 2.0 technologies on the evaluation processes can be exemplified in two dimensions: incremental and radical. Focusing on the incremental dimension, we demonstrate that the Internet improves the traditional review processes by reducing their costs in term of time and money. Concentrating on the radical dimension, the advent of the so called Web 2.0 generates a radical change of scientific knowledge evaluation, due to the development of more collaborative, open and interactive reviewing processes. In this latter dimension, the following models have been developed and adopted: (i) collaborative review models, where readers participate in the process of evaluation through their comments on the manuscript; (ii) bibliometrics techniques which measure the significance of the manuscripts for the community by counting how many time a paper is downloaded or cited; (iii) guild models, where authors can post their articles on a journal website after being invited by a group member. In the paper we evaluate these innovative review models and describe their main common characteristics, as well as their strengths and weaknesses. In the conclusions we demonstrate that none of the models seems to prevail over the role of the traditional review processes, but this may depend on social issues instead of technical ones. Captive Offshoring of New Product Development in Brazil How Does Arbitrage Influence Local, Collaborative Relationships?. MANAGEMENT INTERNATIONAL REVIEW 50 (6): 747-773. Adopting a host country perspective, we theorize why different forms of local collaboration may complement or conflict with efficiency-seeking or arbitrage strategies and may thus influence why captive offshore units receive new product development orders from other MNC units located abroad. Using a sample from Brazil and applying structural equation modeling with partial least squares (PLS), we find that local NPD outsourcing constitutes a complementary relationship, while local cooperation with clients creates a trade-off relationship with captive offshoring. That these relationships are moderated by the captive offshore unit's cost position within the MNC suggests that arbitrage effects transcend the headquarter-subsidiary relationship into the sphere of MNC subsidiaries' local collaborations. Our findings imply that arbitrage in multinational contexts affects the interdependence between resources and transaction costs. This paper examines current state, problems, opportunities, and future research directions of DSS research, and. Using author co-citation analysis approach, this research provides the answers to the several key questions posed by Keen and Kuhn. Kuhn believes that in order for any scientific communities to transit from the pre- to post paradigm period, we need to know who we are as the members of scientific community and what we share between the member of the DSS area and what academics and practitioners in DSS share. Keen addressed three main needs of MIS research to be a coherent field. They are clarification of reference disciplines, defining the dependent variables, and building a cumulative tradition. This research aims to answer those five questions. We suggest that DSS researchers need to look at possible changes of research directions from empirical research emphasis to broaden its scope to take a new approach: the design science paradigm.
