From noyons at CWTS.LEIDENUNIV.NL Wed Jan 7 07:24:48 2009 From: noyons at CWTS.LEIDENUNIV.NL (Noijons, E.) Date: Wed, 7 Jan 2009 13:24:48 +0100 Subject: Announcement: Third Leiden University International Ranking Symposium 6/7 february Message-ID: 3rd Leiden University International Ranking Symposium 'Ranking and Differentiation in Higher Education, Research and Knowledge Utilisation' 6 & 7 February 2009 Buruma Lecture Theatre, Leiden University Medical Centre, The Netherlands. Why this symposium? There is ample evidence from surveys of students to show that global university rankings are an important part of the assessment that students make when choosing a university at which to study. Given the increased need for universities to recruit students beyond their traditional (national) boundaries it follows that universities need to be concerned with this ranking phenomenon. Leiden University's response has been to organise fora for discussion about global ranking. It is our belief that such events serve to clarify important issues and influence the design of ranking processes. This is the third symposium in the Leiden University International Ranking Symposia and it brings together a variety of excellent speakers, including: Mr. Ron Bormans, President HAN University of Applied Science (the Netherlands) Dr. Robert Coelen, Vice-President International, Leiden University (the Netherlands) Dr. Koen Debackere, Department of Managerial Economics, Strategy and Innovation (MSI), Katholieke Universiteit, Leuven (Belgium) Dr. Gero Federkeil, Centre for Higher Education (CHE), G?tersloh (Germany) Prof. Luke Georghiou PhD, BSc, Professor of Science and Technology Policy Management, and Associate Dean Research Faculty of Humanities, University of Manchester (UK) Prof. Wolfgang Gl?nzel, Department of Managerial Economics, Strategy and Innovation (MSI), Katholieke Universiteit, Leuven (Belgium) Prof. Hariolf Grupp, Managing Director, Institute of Economic Policy Research (IWW) & Senate Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), University of Karlsruhe (Germany) Dr. Ellen Hazelkorn, Director Dublin Institute of Technology and Dean of the Faculty of Applied Arts, Dublin (Ireland) Prof. Paul van der Heijden, Rector Magnificus and President of the College Board, Leiden University (the Netherlands) Prof. Lauritz Holm-Nielsen, Rector, University of Aarhus (Denmark) Mr. Martin Ince, Commissioning Editor, Timer Higher Education Supplement, London (UK) Dr Neil Kemp, International Education Consultant and Visiting Fellow, University of London (UK) Prof. Anthony van Raan, Professor and Director Centre for Science and Technology (CWTS), Leiden University (the Netherlands) Dr. Jan Sadlak, Director UNESCO-CEPES, Buckarest (Romania) Mr. Tony Sheil, Senior Manager, Research Policy, Griffith University (Australia) Ms. Hanneke Teekens, Director Communications, Nuffic Netherlands Organisation for Internationalisation (the Netherlands) Prof. Frans van Vught, Member of the Group of Social Policy Analysis (GSPA) of the European Commission, Brussels (Belgium) More detailed information and registration is available at: http://www.events.leiden.edu/ranking2009/ ********************************************************************** This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. We have collected for the first time in one place empirical data about the humanities in America - material to give us information about, for example, what is being taught in the humanities, how they are funded, the size of the workforce, and public attitudes toward the field. This online resource is modeled after the National Science Board's Science and Engineering Indicators, published biennially since 1973 and providing comprehensive data about the nation's science and technology enterprise. The prototype set of Humanities Indicators is a preliminary effort at producing what we hope will be a robust source of data over time. The availability of this prototype set of Indicators is the culmination of a multiyear effort under the Academy's Initiative for Humanities and Culture, an effort involving dozens of Fellows and collaboration with nearly every major learned society and national humanities organization. The process has resulted in the creation of a national network of organizations and individuals committed to the future well-being of the humanities. The Humanities Indicators provide scholars, policymakers, and the public with a first-ever statistical picture of the state of the humanities in the United States, and will help inform analysis of this critical component of our national cultural and intellectual life. Data in the Indicators reveal, for example: * Adult literacy in the United States is polarized. Among Western industrialized nations, we rank near the top in the percentage of highly literate adults (21%), but also near the top in the proportion who are functionally illiterate (also 21%). * Public concern about K-12 teacher qualifications has focused mainly on math and science, but data reveal that the humanities fields suffer an even more glaring dearth of well-prepared teachers. In 2000, the percentage of middle (29%) and high school (37.5%) students taught by a highly qualified history teacher was lower than for any other major subject area. * Humanities faculty are the most poorly paid. They also have a higher proportion of part-time, non-tenured positions compared to their counterparts in the sciences and engineering. But almost half of humanities faculty indicate that they are "very satisfied" with their jobs overall. * Charitable giving to arts and cultural organizations grew between the mid-1990s and early 2000s before leveling off. But little of public or private sector funding for the humanities goes to academic research. This trend undermines both academia and the public since public institutions rely on humanities scholars to provide much of the knowledge on which their activities are based. * Since the early 1970s, the number of Americans who support the banning of books from public libraries because they espouse atheism, extreme militarism, communism, or homosexuality decreased by at least 11 percentage points, although 26% to 34% of the public still supports banning some types of books. In the case of books advocating homosexuality, the decline was a particularly significant 20 percentage points. I am grateful to the leaders of the Initiative: Norman Bradburn (National Opinion Research Council); Jonathan Cole (Columbia University); Denis Donoghue (New York University); Steven Marcus (Columbia University); Francis C. Oakley (Williams College); and Patricia Meyer Spacks (University of Virginia), and to the many other Fellows and colleagues who have advanced this work. Special mention should be given to Norman Bradburn, who led the work to organize the Indicators into a cohesive whole. You can view the Indicators at www.HumanitiesIndicators.org . We welcome your comments and input. Leslie Berlowitz Chief Executive Officer P.S. Please save March 9 for a national symposium in Washington, D.C. on Humanities and Culture in a Civil Society. Iss. SI OCT 2008 Language: English Document Type: Article Abstract: This study has been carried out to analyze the carbon nano-tubes research field by scientometric methods. The data are based on the Thomson/ISI Web of Science (WoS) and on the literature file of the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS). The time dependent overall number of articles dealing with nano-tubes is given. The data reveal a dramatic increase of basic research activity in this research field. The most productive authors and leading research organizations are determined. The distribution of the nanotubes articles on the countries of the authors and on the leading journals is given, The citation data of nanotubes articles are discussed: The average citation rate of nanotubes related articles and of articles out of other currently popular research fields published in the year 2000 are compared with the average citation rates in chemistry and physics. The time evolution of the most highly cited nanotubes papers and of the complete ensemble of the nanotubes articles published in 2000 are shown. The impact of two nanotubes papers appeared prior to 1991 is discussed. (C) 2008 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Google Scholar (www.scholar.google.com) and Publish or Perish (www.harzing.com) were used to analyze citation counts. A total of 58 tourism academics registered at least 500 citations for their books and journal articles published at any time between 1970 and 2007, while a minimum of 250 citations were recorded by 48 authors for their works published since 1998. The study suggests that Google Scholar and Publish or Perish may provide an alternative means to develop impact scores for tourism scholars, provided a number of codicils are considered. Design/methodology/approach - A list of articles published by Iranian authors in ISI journals in 2003 was obtained from the Web of Science. The names of authors were searched in a specific database as well as the web to find their first names and hence their gender. The articles were then broken down by gender and subject category. International collaborations of the authors were also investigated. Findings - The productivity of female authors at the individual level as measured by article per author share was lower than male authors. In total, females accounted for 6 per cent and males for 94 per cent of the articles published in 2003. A chi-square test showed that female contribution was significantly lower than expected. Originality/value - The study is the first to investigate gender participation in scientific productivity in Iran and most likely in a Muslim country. The article highlights the need for qualitative studies on the gender aspect of scientific productivity in Muslim countries. Our article provides a comprehensive overview of citation-based research in the nursing profession, as well as a discussion of bibliometrics, journal impact factors, and international publishing trends. The debate on evidence-based practice and its potential influence and relevance for nursing scholars is also covered. Although journal performance indicators are, no doubt, important for the contemporary nursing academic, it is the core research skills and attributes that nursing scholars, academics, and educators will need to consider more carefully in future if the next generation of professional nurse researchers is to truly flourish. One measure, referred to as the h(alpha)-index, generalizes the well-known h-index or Hirsch index. The other measure, referred to as the g(alpha)- index, generalizes the closely related g-index. We analyze theoretically the relationship between the h(alpha)-and g(alpha)-indices on the one hand and some simple measures of scientific performance on the other hand. We also study the behavior of the h(alpha)-and g(alpha)-indices empirically. Some advantages of the h(alpha)- and g(alpha)-indices over the h- and g- indices are pointed out. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. VANCLAY Southern Cross University, P.O. Box 157, Lismore, NSW 2480, Australia ABSTRACT : The ISI journal impact factor (JIF) is based on a sample that may represent half the whole-of life citations to some journals, but a small fraction (<10%) of the citations accruing to other journals. This disproportionate sampling means that the JIF provides a misleading indication of the true impact of journals, biased in favour of journals that have a rapid rather than a prolonged impact. Many journals exhibit a consistent pattern of citation accrual from year to year, so it may be possible to adjust the JIF to provide a more reliable indication of a journal?s impact. The accuracy of the proposed sampling methods was considered in association by comparing with reference results previously obtained by Fully Retrieving Sampling (FRS) method, which involved analyzing the contents and categories of all articles from the database. The results suggested that RRS and DRS methods were appropriate, efficient and reasonably accurate for categorization of relatively large volume of research articles. RRS method was highly recommended, especially when the contents of sample articles was unevenly distributed. By DRS and RRS methods, only about 6.3% of total articles were required for obtaining similar results as those given by FRS method. The percentage Expected Worst Errors (EWE) from DRS and RRS methods were observed to range from 1.0 to 5.5%. The EWE value could be reduced by increasing the sample size. Its relative decline in percentage share of publications is largely due to the emergence of China and other Asian nations. In 2006, China has become the second largest nation in terms of the number of publications within this database. In terms of citations, the competitive advantage of the American ?domestic market? is diminished, while the European Union (EU) is profiting more from the enlargement of the database over time than the USA. However, the USA is still outperforming all other countries in terms of highly cited papers and citation/publication ratios, and it is more successful than the EU in coordinating its research efforts in strategic priority areas like nanotechnology. This study investigates the 82 most highly cited Information Science and Library Science? (IS&LS) articles (the top 0.1%) in the Web of Science from the perspectives of disciplinarity, annual citation patterns, and first author citation profiles. First, the relative frequency of these 82 articles was much lower for articles solely in IS&LS than for those in IS&LS and at least one other subject, suggesting that that the promotion of interdisciplinary research in IS&LS may be conducive to improving research quality. Second, two thirds of the first authors had an h-index in IS&LS of less than eight, show that much significant research is produced by researchers without a high overall IS&LS research productivity. Third, there is a moderate correlation (0.46) between citation ranking and the number of years between peak year and year of publication. This indicates that high quality ideas and methods in IS&LS often are deployed many years after being published. Address for correspondence: JONATHAN M. Raman is being acknowledged by worldwide physics community for his classic works. The present study has made an effort to analyze how much impact in number of citation receiving for his publications. Of course, there was a lack of tools for such a study some years back. The study has limited to the database Science Citation Index for the period 1982?2005. The noteworthy results are: One third of his research papers have been cited at least once; The research papers published during 1918?1940 could make remarkable impact; Three of his papers have shown an upward growth in number of citations receiving; The total citations to papers of age 46 and 54 as on the year 1982 accounted for more than 50 per cent of the total citations received; Research works in the ?Acoustics? area have been cited more than any other area of his works; Eponymal citations are to be explored and analysed to understand the real impact of his works. It is shown that, provided that the same content is searched across various documents, the Inclusion Index generally delivers more exact results, in particular when computing the degree of similarity based on citation data. In addition, various methodologies such as co-word analysis, Subject?Action?Object (SAO) structures, bibliographic coupling, co-citation analysis, and selfcitation links are compared. We find that the two former ones tend to describe rather semantic similarities that differ from knowledge flows as expressed by the citation-based methodologies. ------------------------------- E-mail: Anastassios.pouris at up.ac.za TITLE : Fluorine research in South Africa and four benchmarking countries: Comparative mapping and assessment AUTHOR : ANASTASSIOS POURIS Institute for Technological Innovation, Engineering Building I, University of Pretoria Pretoria 0002, South Africa Address for correspondence: ANASTASSIOS POURIS E-mail: Anastassios.pouris at up.ac.za JOURNAL : Scientometrics, Vol. 78, No. 1 (2009) 131?143 DOI: 10.1007/s11192-007-1904-8 ABSTRACT : Fluorine research has been identified as a priority area in South Africa and the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (NECSA) is embarking in an effort to expand its hydrogen fluoride and aluminium trifluoride production capacity. On the eve of those efforts this article reports the findings of an effort to map and assess fluorine research in South Africa in comparison to four other countries i.e. Malaysia, Australia, Germany and Italy. The results of the assessment are aimed at guiding future directions for fluorine research in the country, at identifying centres of expertise nationally where new research chairs could be established, at identifying international centres of expertise to be utilised for collaboration and of course for inter-temporal benchmarking of fluorine research in South Africa. South Africa is identified to be producing a small number of fluorine research publications in comparison to other countries like Germany and Italy which produce orders of magnitude larger number of publications and in comparison to country?s total research effort. Furthermore the relevant research effort appears to be dispersed geographically and in disciplinary terms. Relevant recommendations are provided with particular emphasis on the pluralistic science policy approach followed in the country. ------------------------------- E-mail: John.Rigby at manchester.ac.uk TITLE : Comparing the scientific quality achieved by funding instruments for single grant holders and for collaborative networks within a research system: Some observations AUTHOR : JOHN RIGBY PREST, University of Manchester, Oxford Road, Manchester, UK Address for correspondence: JOHN RIGBY E-mail: John.Rigby at manchester.ac.uk JOURNAL : Scientometrics, Vol. 78, No. 1 (2009) 145?164 DOI: 10.1007/s11192-007-1970-y ABSTRACT : Increasingly, funding of academic research is carried out through the support of collaboration, rather than through single awards to a sole grant holder. The practice is well supported by evidence that larger, network- based research achieves high quality while leading to a number of capacity building benefits for the research system, although with significant transaction costs. However, the question of what kind of funding schemes should be made available to researchers is not a simple dichotomy between single grant-holder projects and networks. A key question is how to achieve a balance in each subject field between different forms of funding instrument employed while ensuring different forms of funding retain a reputation for generating research of high scientific quality. This paper reports the results of a systematic comparison of the scientific quality of 1010 scientific papers from the ISI database produced under two contrasting forms of funding instrument for a single year in the Austrian science system. Comparison of the arcsinh transformed citation counts of papers from the two main forms of funding for basic science at the level of main scientific field shows there is no statistically significant difference in the quality achieved by the two forms of funding. This may suggest that funders and research performers have succeeded in ensuring that different research instruments nevertheless achieve very similar levels of scientific excellence. ------------------------------- E-mail: wolfgang.glanzel at econ.kuleuven.ac.be TITLE : Subfield-specific normalized relative indicators and a new generation of relational charts: Methodological foundations illustrated on the assessment of institutional research performance AUTHOR : WOLFGANG GL?NZEL,a,b BART THIJS,a ANDR?S SCHUBERT,b KOENRAAD DEBACKEREa a Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Steunpunt O&O Indicatoren, Dept. Already the institutional level requires the application of more sophisticated techniques than customary in evaluation of national research performance. In this study institutional profile clusters are used to examine which level of the hierarchical subject classification should preferably be used to build subject-normalised citation indicators. It is shown that a set of properly normalised indicators can serve as a basis of comparative assessment within and even among different clusters, provided that their profiles still overlap and such comparison is thus meaningful. On the basis of 24 selected European universities, a new version of relational charts is presented for the comparative assessment of citation impact. ------------------------------- From garfield at CODEX.CIS.UPENN.EDU Tue Jan 13 14:32:12 2009 From: garfield at CODEX.CIS.UPENN.EDU (=?windows-1252?Q?Eugene_Garfield?=) Date: Tue, 13 Jan 2009 14:32:12 -0500 Subject: Calero-Medina, C; Noyons, ECM Combining mapping and citation network analysis for a better understanding of the scientific development: The case of the absorptive capacity field JOURNAL OF INFORMETRICS, 2 (4): 272-279 OCT 2008 Message-ID: E-mail Address: clara at cwts.leidenuniv.nl; noyons at cwts.leidenuniv.nl Author(s): Calero-Medina, C (Calero-Medina, Clara); Noyons, ECM (Noyons, Ed C. The novelty of this approach is the combination of both methods. In this case we analyzed the citations to a very influential paper published in 1990 that contains, for the first time, the term Absorptive Capacity. A bibliometric map identified the terms and the theories associated with the term while two techniques from the citation network analysis recognized the main papers during 15 years. As a result we identified the articles that influenced the research for some time and linked them into a research tradition that can be considered the backbone of the "Absorptive Capacity Field". It collates their journal coverage in an important medical subfield: oncology. It is found that all WoS-covered oncological journals (n = 126) are indexed in Scopus, but that Scopus covers many more journals (an additional n = 106). However, the latter group tends to have much lower impact factors than WoS covered journals. Among the top 25% of sources with the highest impact factors in Scopus, 94% is indexed in the WoS, and for the bottom 25% only 6%. In short, in oncology the WoS is a genuine subset of Scopus, and tends to cover the best journals from it in terms of citation impact per paper. Although Scopus covers 90% more oncological journals compared to WoS, the average Scopus-based impact factor for journals indexed by both databases is only 2.6% higher than that based on WoS data. Results reflect fundamental differences in coverage policies: the WoS based on Eugene Garfield's concepts of covering a selective set of most frequently used (cited) journals; Scopus with broad coverage, more similar to large disciplinary literature databases. The paper also found that 'classical', WoS-based impact factors strongly correlate with a new, Scopus-based metric, SCImago JournalRank (SJR), one of a series of new indicators founded on earlier work by Pinski and Narin [Pinski, G., & Narin F. (1976). Citation influence for journal aggregates of scientific publications: Theory, with application to the literature of physics. Citations reported by Google Scholar offer an efficient way to rank all journals objectively, in a manner consistent with other indicators. This h-index exhibited a high correlation with the Journal Impact Factor (r = 0.92), but is not confined to journals selected by any particular commercial provider. A ranking of 180 forestry journals is presented, on the basis of this index. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. (2008). Journal weighted impact factor: A proposal. Journal of Informetrics, 2(2), 164 - 172] propose a journal weighted impact factor (WIF). Unlike the ordinary impact factor, the WIF of a journal takes into account the prestige or the influence of citing journals. In this communication, we show that the way in which Habibzadeh and Yadollahie calculate the WIF of a journal has some serious problems. Due to these problems, a ranking of journals based on WIF can be misleading. We also indicate how the problems can be solved by changing the way in which the WIF of a journal is calculated. The consortium comprises AAAS, Arizona State University (CSPO), ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Mines de Paris (CSI), George Mason University (SPP), Georgetown University (CCT), The George Washington University (CISTP), and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (STS). This event is organized and run entirely by and for graduate students interested in studying issues related to society, science, and technology from a wide range of perspectives. The Conference brings students from around the world to present and discuss their work with each other and with invited experts/guest speakers in the field. The 9th Annual Conference of Science & Technology in Society provides a professional and interactive venue for graduate students from Science & Technology Policy (STP), Science & Technology Studies (STS), and related fields including, but not limited to, health, energy and environment, space, information and communications, and other emerging areas. In developing the agenda for the conference, the organizing committee's primary goal is to create a forum that encourages intellectual exchange between STP and STS by assembling panels around similar themes. As such, the committee will accept the strongest proposals. This year's agenda will emphasize international perspectives of science and technology. In addition to presenting papers and receiving constructive feedback on their research, students will have the opportunity to interact with each other and prominent scholars and professionals related to their field of interest. Every year we invite prominent figures from both STP and STS to deliver keynote addresses. Because we draw participants from all over the world, this conference is an excellent opportunity for young scholars aspiring to work in academic, governmental, or nongovernmental settings to build both national and international networks for future research and collaboration. The conference organizing committee welcomes submissions of initial abstracts (up to 250 words). Those whose abstracts are accepted should prepare for a 15-minute presentation. Please submit abstracts and contact information (with affiliation) via email to stabstract at gmail.com by January 23, 2009. Notification of abstract acceptance will be given by the end of January. An effort will be made to inform international students earlier to accommodate their visa and travel arrangements. A small number of travel grants will be available on a competitive basis. Indicate your need for travel funds when submitting your abstract. For information about last year?s conference, please see our website. We are working to update it with current information, so check back often. Please contact stabstract at gmail.com with any questions. Language: English Document Type: Article Author Keywords: bibliometrics; analysis; h index Keywords Plus: SCIENTOMETRIC INDICATORS; FIELD-NORMALIZATION; CROSS-FIELD; H-INDEX; SCIENCE; PUBLICATION; PERFORMANCE; OUTPUT; POWER; MODEL Abstract: We study the distributions of citations received by a single publication within several disciplines, spanning broad areas of science. We show that the probability that an article is cited c times has large variations between different disciplines, but all distributions are rescaled on a universal curve when the relative indicator c(f) = c/c(0) is considered, where c(0) is the average number of citations per article for the discipline. In addition we show that the same universal behavior occurs when citation distributions of articles published in the same field, but in different years, are compared. These findings provide a strong validation of cf as an unbiased indicator for citation performance across disciplines and years. Based on this indicator, we introduce a generalization of the h index suitable for comparing scientists working in different fields. The aim is to investigate the effects of the large-scale deposit (so called Green Open Access) on user access, author visibility, and journal viability. The PEER call for tender is now available for public viewing: http://www.stm-assoc.org/home/peer-invitations-to-tender-for-research-now-available.html At the heart of the project an Observatory will be built to gather evidence about the impact of systematic archiving of stage-two research outputs. Three strands of research will be tendered: Behavioural Research: Authors and Users vis-?-vis Journals and Repositories (Call mid-December 2008, Deadline mid-February 2009). The objectives will be to: * Track trends and explain patterns of author and user behaviour in the context of so called Green Open Access. * Understand the role repositories play for authors in the context of journal publishing. * Understand the role repositories play for users in context of accessing journal articles. Usage Research: Journals and Repositories (Call mid-December 2008, Deadline mid-February 2009). The objectives will be to: * Determine usage trends at publishers and repositories; * Understand source and nature of use of deposited manuscripts in repositories; * Track trends, develop indicators and explain patterns of usage for repositories and journals. Economic research: The deposit of journal manuscripts in repositories (Summer 2009). The objectives will be to: * Compare the efficiency and cost effectiveness of methods of deposit, e.g. publisher-assisted vs. author self-archiving; * Compare the efficiency and cost effectiveness of access, e.g. repositories vs. publisher systems. The International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers (STM), the European Science Foundation, G?ttingen State and University Library, the Max Planck Society and INRIA will collaborate on PEER, supported by the SURF Foundation and University of Bielefeld, which will contribute the expertise of the EU-funded DRIVER project. Significant about the PEER project is the cooperation of the various stakeholders in the scholarly publishing cycle without prejudice. The PEER project has nominated a Research Oversight Group: * Justus Haucap, Professor of Competition Policy, University of Erlangen. Prof. Haucap chairs the German Monopolies Commission; * Henk Moed, Senior researcher at the Centre for Science and Technology Studies, Leiden University. Dr. Moed has been the recipient of the Derek de Solla Price Award; * Carol Tenopir, Professor of Information Sciences, University of Tennessee. Prof. Tenopir has received the International Information Industry Lifetime Achievement Award. The set-up of the PEER project offers a number of distinctions that bidders could utilise in the design of the study: * PEER is based on the selection of 200 to 300 ISI ranked journals, from which manuscripts are selected for deposit. Publishers hold a control group of equivalent journals from which no manuscripts will be deposited. * From journals selected for deposit, only the manuscripts with European based (lead) authors are selected for archiving, leaving all other articles/manuscripts as an alternate group. * Half of the manuscripts will be deposited directly by the publisher, but the other half will require action by the author before archiving. * Authors will be invited to deposit in repositories participating in the PEER project. The PEER press release from 14 October 2008 is available at: http://www.stm-assoc.org/home/stm-partners-in-the-just-launched-pioneering-collaboration-b.html For enquiries regarding the PEER Observatory, please contact Chris Armbruster, Max Planck Digital Library, Max Planck Society. The impact of the paper, as indicated by its citation count and its influence on a wide range of disciplines, has been extraordinary. Furthermore, the paper's influence continues to increase. Here we celebrate this exceptional paper and offer observations on how ideas become adopted, institutionalized, and sometimes translated in ways not necessarily intended by their authors. We also note the vagaries of the process by which journals assess the caliber of papers submitted to them-after all, this paper was initially rejected! Conference Host: New York Inst Technol Author Keywords: Intangible Assets; Life Cycle Of Technology; Remaining Useful Life (RUL); Scientometrics; Patent Bibliometrics Abstract: When a company understands that it must innovate, the next question is determining where it is best to innovate. This "where" in technology innovation management, is strictly related to the Remaining Useful Life (RUL). The RUL concept is defined as the time remaining until the reliability drops below a defined minimal operating threshold. The RUL analysis of certain intangible assets (patents and know-how license agreements, industrial designs, trademarks, logos, customer base) is carried out through different methodologies and a variety of different approaches. The key subject in all these methodologies is the life cycle of the technology. The analyst tries to approach the foresight of the life cycle of technology to establish its value in use. Different life measuring systems are considered in RUL analysis depending on the different typologies of,technology life: statutory, contract, judicial, economic and functional. The purpose of this paper is to emphasize how the technology life cycle is influenced by changes not only in technology but also in scientific research evolution. Scientific research life analysis must examine the historical emergence or decay of a certain intellectual interest in the scientific community through the study of what is and what is not published in scientific journals. Data used in life cycle estimation may be used in RUL analysis. Typically, this data includes scientific articles, registration documents (patent applications, trademarks and copyright applications), commercial contracts, judicial orders, financial statements and technology data. The analysis of the life cycle allows incorporating qualitative considerations (legal, contractual, physical, technical know-how, functional, economic) related to the conduct of future technologies. But technology development is conditioned by trends in scientific research and by the changes in the marketing dynamics of today and in the future. Quantitative analysis of scientific production, applications for patents, industrial designs and trademarks, developed in scientometrics and bibliometrics, provide us with an unbiased guide to R&D and business trends. This article aims to emphasize the importance of combining scientometrics and patent bibliometrics useful for calculating the "Remaining Useful Life" (RUL) for evaluating the value of intangible assets. To this end, a printed questionnaire was distributed between March and June 2007 to a group of researchers from Cuban national health institutes, who were chosen through stratified random sampling (1160 researchers from 11 institutes). Variables included level of information about Open Access Movement terms and initiatives; papers published in open access journals; and reasons to publish, or not to publish, papers in such journals. Descriptive statistics, bivanate correlations, and correspondence analysis done using the SPSS statistical software, version 10.0 for Windows. Little knowledge of open access journals and other Open Access Movement terms and initiatives, and little use of open access journals publication means, were observed. Title: At what age do biomedical scientists do their best work? Source: FASEB JOURNAL, 22 (12): 4067-4070 DEC 2008 Language: English Document Type: Article Author Keywords: creative productivity; scientific workforce; research performance; age distribution; scientific literature Abstract: Several human characteristics that influence scientific research performance, including set goals, mental and physical abilities, education, and experience, may vary considerably during the life cycle of scientists. We sought to answer the question of whether high-quality research productivity is associated with investigator's age. We randomly selected 300 highly cited scientists (50 from each of 6 different biomedical fields, specifically immunology, microbiology, neuroscience, psychology-psychiatry, clinical medicine, and biology-biochemistry). Then, we identified the top 5 highly cited articles (within 10 yr after publication adjusted for the expansion of the literature) as first author of each of them. Subsequently, we plotted the distribution of the 1500 analyzed articles of the 300 studied scientists in the eight 5-year intervals of investigator's age during the year of article publication (21- 25 to 55-60 yr of age), adjusted for person-years of contribution of each scientist in the various age groups. Highly cited research productivity plotted a curve that peaked at the age group of 31-35 yr of age and then gradually decreased with advancing age. However, a considerable proportion of this highly cited research was produced by older scientists (in almost 20% of the analyzed articles, researchers were older than 50 yr). The results were similar in another analysis of the single most cited article of each studied scientist. In conclusion, high-quality scientific productivity in the biomedical fields as a function of investigator's age plots an inverted U-shaped curve, in which significant decreases take place from around 40 yr of age and beyond. L. Notkins and "Impact factor fever" by P. Cherubini (10 October 2008, p. 191 ) discussed the negative effect of the impact factor (IF). Although the IF system has serious flaws (1 ), for the moment there is nothing better to measure quality of scientific output (2 ). Instead of trying to get rid of the IF, we should try to make the IF a more reliable number and to prevent misuse. One way that journals can manipulate their impact factors is by increasing journal self-citation (1 ). For example, a journal can publish summaries of its own previously published articles, along with relevant self-citations. A journal can also publish editorials and readers' comments on its own published articles--again, with citations. In perhaps the most questionable editorial policy, editors suggest revision of a submitted manuscript's reference list to include specific relevant articles published in the editor's journal (1 ). Some have advocated removing all journal self-citations from the IF citation count (3 ). Every journal has the right to increase its impact factor by attracting the best papers. Disingenuously manipulating impact factor, however, should be banned. There was very little overlap with only three papers being in both lists. This indicates very different criteria for seeking to read as opposed to cite recent scientific publications and calls into question the reliability of commonly sued measures quality and/or impact for papers at the individual publication level. Keywords Plus: INTELLECTUAL STRUCTURE; COCITATION Abstract: There have been many surveys on various ubiquitous computing related topics. These surveys were written based on the information subjectively selected by the author(s), according to a rather limited set of references. Since the literature related to ubiquitous computing is voluminous, it is difficult to analyze and grasp the main research themes using traditional methods. We therefore used the methodology devised by the information scientists that has been Successfully applied in analyzing a large amount of literature. We applied the principal components analysis and Pathfinder network to derive the intellectual structure of ubiquitous computing research. From the emergent intellectual structure, we identify the major research themes in ubiquitous computing, and show some of their interrelationships. The Web, the Semantic Web, the Web 2.0, and Social Networks are all manifestations of the success of the link. The Hypertext Conference provides the forum for all research concerning links: their semantics, their presentation, the applications, as well as the knowledge that can be derived from their analysis and their effects on society. Hypertext 2008, held in Pittsburgh, was a real success. The number of submissions and attendees was up, a successful Student Research Competition took place, and a rejuvenated social linking track added new ideas and connections to the traditional core of the conference. IMPORTANT DATES * Technical tracks paper submission deadline: February 2nd, 2009 * Notification to authors: March 16th, 2009 * Camera-ready (final papers to ACM): April 6th, 2009 LOCATION AND DATES Hypertext 2009 will be held from June 29th to July 1st at the Villa Gualino Convention Center, on the hills overlooking Torino. The capital of the Piedmont region, Torino lies at the foot of the Alps, the majestic mountains that hosted the 2006 Winter Olympics. First the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, then one of the European centers of baroque, today Torino is a dynamic city known for its industry, art and culture, sports, research and education, and cuisine. The timing of Hypertext 2009 provides an excellent opportunity to visit Italy in conjunction with the International Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation, and Personalization in Trento (UMAP 2009 - http://umap09.fbk.eu/), and the International Workshop and Conference on Network Science in Venice (NetSci 2009 - http://www.netsci09.net/). PROGRAM Hypertext 2009 will feature two stellar keynote speakers: Lada Adamic (University of Michigan) is a noted scholar of social networking and the winner of the 2008 Engelbart Award; Ricardo Baeza-Yates is Vice-President of Yahoo! Research for Europe and Latin America, leading the labs in Spain, Chile, and Israel. The attendees of Hypertext 2009 will also have a chance to experiment with applications mixing real-world data and on-line data. We will deploy active RFID tags in the badges of volunteers and track the real-time relations of physical proximity between the attendees. The data collection and visualization system will be provided by the SocioPatterns project (http://www.sociopatterns.org) and will expose API methods that allow developers to mash up real-world links between the attendees with other types of linking information from the Web. In the conference technical program, professionals from academia, industry, and the media will present innovative ideas and tools exploiting the broad range of links increasingly connecting people, information, communities, and structures. Research topics will be organized into three tracks: Track 1. Information Structure and Presentation (Chairs: Peter Brusilovsky and Cristina Gena) Track 2. People, Resources, and Annotations (Chairs: Andreas Hotho and Vittorio Loreto) Track 3. Hypertext and Community (Chairs: Mark Bernstein and Antonio Pizzo) TRACK 1: INFORMATION STRUCTURE AND PRESENTATION The information structure and presentation track represents a multitude of topics, which were traditionally represented at ACM Hypertext Conferences. The track program targets formal study of scholarly, structural, sculptural, spatial, open, dynamic and adaptive or any other type of hypertext (or Web-based Information System). This track also focuses on how hypertext approaches and technologies can be applied to structure and present information in diverse domains, and how hypertext techniques can be exploited in classical and advanced applications. The aim of this track is to bring researchers together to discuss models, architecture, applications, properties, or theory in general, about hypertext and hypermedia. Topics for consideration include: * Hypertext models * Spatial hypertext * Information structuring * Hypertext and knowledge management * Self-organized hypertext * Personal information organization * Intelligent hypertext and link generation * Navigation support * Open hypertext * Web and hypertext link analysis * Dynamic and adaptive hypertext * Hypertext and web engineering * Interfaces and interaction with hypertexts * Faceted browsing * Social navigation * Hypertexts supporting Web-based collaboration * Hypertext and recommender systems: the role of link in recommendations * Hypertext applications in everyday devices (TV, mobile phone, on board car service, etc.) * Educational hypertext and hypermedia * User evaluations of hypertext application * Hypertext and cultural heritage * E-books, kiosks, e-commerce, e-tourism * Hypertext application in medical and health systems For additional information on the track and the Program Committee, please visit http://www.ht2009.org/track1.php TRACK 2: PEOPLE, RESOURCES, AND ANNOTATIONS One of the most exciting recent developments in Web science is the rise of social annotation, by which users can easily markup other authors' resources via collaborative mechanisms such as tagging, filtering, voting, editing, classification, and rating. These social processes lead to the emergence of many types of links between texts, users, concepts, pages, articles, media, and so on. We welcome submissions on design, analysis, and modeling of information systems driven by social linking. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: * Applications to search, retrieval, recommendation, and navigation * Explicit vs. inferred social links (e.g. mining query logs) * Integration of different social networks (e.g. links between blogs and bookmarking systems) * Socially induced measures of similarity, relatedness, or distance * Co-evolution of social, information, and semantic networks * Analysis of the structure and the dynamics of social information networks * Behavioral patterns of social linking * Linguistic analysis of social annotation spaces * Formal and generative models of social annotation * Unstructured vs. structured social knowledge representations * Implementation and scalability of social link representations * Automatic and user-based evaluation * Emergent semantics in social networks * Robustness against spam and other forms of social abuse * Design of collaborative annotation mechanisms * Critical mass and incentives of social participation (e.g. games) * User interfaces for collaborative annotation For additional information on the track and the Program Committee, please visit http://www.ht2009.org/track2.php TRACK 3: HYPERTEXT AND COMMUNITY The Hypertext and Community track will explore, examine, and reflect upon social cyberculture in electronic media, ranging from literary fiction and creative scholarship to blog and microblog networks, social sites, games, auctions, and markets. Topics will include: * Hypertext literature * Theory and practice of expression in wikis, weblogs, and social spaces * Personal journals, weblogs, and social media * Net art, literary hypertext, interactive fiction, and games * Behavioral patterns of social linking For additional information on the track and the Program Committee, please visit http://www.ht2009.org/track3.php SUBMISSIONS Papers must report new results substantiated by experimentation, simulation, analysis, or application. Authors are invited to submit papers presenting original, not previously published works. Submission categories may include regular research papers (max 10 pages) discussing mature work, and short papers (max 5 pages) describing preliminary results of on-going work or novel thought-provoking ideas. All submissions should be formatted according to the official ACM SIG proceedings template (http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates) and submitted via EasyChair (http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=ht2009). Authors are not required to anonymize submissions, but are asked to submit keywords via EasyChair. Accepted papers will appear in the Hypertext 2009 Conference Proceedings and also be available through the ACM Digital Library. The purpose of the workshops is to provide a more informal setting where participants can exchange ideas on a focused topic and suggest directions for future research. As such, they also offer a good opportunity for (young) researchers to present their work and to obtain feedback from an interested community. Further information on accepted workshops will be found on the conference website. Title: Subspecialty Impact Factors: The Contribution of Pediatric Anesthesia and Pain Articles Source: ANESTHESIA AND ANALGESIA, 108 (1): 105-110 JAN 2009 Language: English Document Type: Article Keywords Plus: MEDICAL JOURNALS; FUTURE Abstract: BACKGROUND: The Science Citation Index "Journal Impact Factor" (JIF) is widely used to assess journal quality and prestige. The JIFs for the specialty anesthesia are reported annually, however, the impact factors (IFs) for subspecialties in those journals have not been reported. Therefore, we compared the TFs of pediatric anesthesia (Ped IFs) and pain (Pain IFs) articles from four anesthesia journals for two epochs. METHODS: An article-by-article manual search for "source" pediatric anesthesia and pain articles published in 1998, 1999, 2003, and 2004 in Anesthesiology, Anesthesia & Analgesin, British Jounal of Anaesthesia, and Canadian Journal of Anesthesia was performed. The citations for each of these articles in each of the years were surveyed in the ISI Web of Science database. Ped IFs and Pain IFs for the 2000 and 2005 epochs were calculated and compared with the JIF from which they were derived and to those Of the journal, Pediatric Anesthesia. RESULTS: Ped IFs for the four journals in 2005 exceeded those in 2000, whereas the Pain IFs were unchanged. For both the Ped IFs and the Pain IFS, there was a significant effect of the journal. The Pain IFs were 70%, greater than the Ped IFs. CONCLUSIONS: Ped IFs were consistently less than the JIFs in which they were published and the Pain IFs, except for the British Journal of Annaesthesia 2005 in the latter case. The numbers of citations of pediatric anesthesia articles were greater in journals with greater IFs. The implications of subspecialty IFs warrant further consideration. His contributions range from the establishment of an infrastructure for a European social psychology, and the start of a new intellectual movement within social psychology, to the formulation of a set of concepts addressing intergroup relations that were finally integrated into Social Identity Theory. The present study provides an empirical examination of Tajfel's contribution to intergroup research over the last 30 years via a citation analysis of five journals: the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, the British Journal of Social Psychology, the European Journal of Social Psychology, the South African Journal of Psychology, and the German Journal of Social Psychology (Zeitschrift fur Sozialpsychologie). The results indicate that Tajfel's work on intergroup relations is increasingly cited, especially since the 1990s, and the international recognition of his work is substantial. Three possible reasons for the recognition his work still enjoys are proposed: its potential to generate theoretical and empirical controversies; its explanatory power; and the extent to which his work is used as a referential framework.
