Recombining these two theories, simulations of interaction, organization, and self-organization of intentional communication can be distinguished by using algorithms from the computation of anticipatory systems. The self-organizing and organizing layers remain rooted in the double contingency of the human encounter which provides the variation. Organization and self-organization of communication are reflexive upon and therefore reconstructive of each other. Using mutual information in three dimensions, the imprint of meaning processing in the modeling system on the historical organization of uncertainty in the modeled system can be measured. This is shown empirically in the case of intellectual organization as "structurating" structure in the textual domain of scientific articles. http://arxiv.org/abs/0911.5565v1 http://www.leydesdorff.net/GiddensLuhmann/index.htm ** apologies for cross posting ________________________________ Loet Leydesdorff Amsterdam School of Communications Research (ASCoR) Kloveniersburgwal 48, 1012 CX Amsterdam. This article describes how this approach fits with other efforts to locally and globally map scientific outputs. We then show how these science overlay maps help benchmark, explore collaborations, and track temporal changes, using examples of universities, corporations, funding agencies, and research topics. We address conditions of application, with their advantages, downsides and limitations. Overlay maps especially help investigate the increasing number of scientific developments and organisations that do not fit within traditional disciplinary categories. "Comparison of SCImago journal rank indicator with journal impact factor more options " FASEB JOURNAL 22(8): 2623-2628 , August 2008 Message-ID: E-mail Addresses: m.falagas at aibs.gr TITLE : Comparison of SCImago journal rank indicator with journal impact factor more options Author(s): Falagas ME (Falagas, Matthew E.)1,2,3, Kouranos VD (Kouranos, Vasilios D.)1, Arencibia-Jorge R (Arencibia-Jorge, Ricardo)4, Karageorgopoulos DE (Karageorgopoulos, Drosos E.)1 Source: FASEB JOURNAL Volume: 22 Issue: 8 Pages: 2623-2628 Published: AUG 2008 Times Cited: 7 References: 41 Citation Map Abstract: The application of currently available sophisticated algorithms of citation analysis allows for the incorporation of the "quality" of citations in the evaluation of scientific journals. We sought to compare the newly introduced SCImago journal rank (SJR) indicator with the journal impact factor ( IF). We retrieved relevant information from the official Web sites hosting the above indices and their source databases. The SJR indicator is an open-access resource, while the journal IF requires paid subscription. The SJR indicator ( based on Scopus data) lists considerably more journal titles published in a wider variety of countries and languages, than the journal IF ( based on Web of Science data). Both indices divide citations to a journal by articles of the journal, during a specific time period. However, contrary to the journal IF, the SJR indicator attributes different weight to citations depending on the "prestige" of the citing journal without the influence of journal self- citations; prestige is estimated with the application of the PageRank algorithm in the network of journals. In addition, the SJR indicator includes the total number of documents of a journal in the denominator of the relevant calculation, whereas the journal IF includes only "citable" articles ( mainly original articles and reviews). A 3-yr period is analyzed in both indices but with the use of different approaches. Regarding the top 100 journals in the 2006 journal IF ranking order, the median absolute change in their ranking position with the use of the SJR indicator is 32 (1st quartile: 12; 3rd quartile: 75). Although further validation is warranted, the novel SJR indicator poses as a serious alternative to the well-established journal IF, mainly due to its openaccess nature, larger source database, and assessment of the quality of citations. "Predicting citation count of Bioinformatics papers within four years of publication " Bioinformatics 25(24):3303-3309, December 15,2009 Message-ID: E-mail Addresses: aibanez at fi.upm.es TITLE : Predicting citation count of Bioinformatics papers within four years of publication Author(s): Ibanez, A (Ibanez, Alfonso), Larranaga, P (Larranaga, Pedro), Bielza, C (Bielza, Concha) Source: BIOINFORMATICS Volume: 25 Issue: 24 Pages: 3303-3309 Published: DEC 15 2009 Abstract: Motivation: Nowadays, publishers of scientific journals face the tough task of selecting high-quality articles that will attract as many readers as possible from a pool of articles. This is due to the growth of scientific output and literature. The possibility of a journal having a tool capable of predicting the citation count of an article within the first few years after publication would pave the way for new assessment systems. Results: This article presents a new approach based on building several prediction models for the Bioinformatics journal. These models predict the citation count of an article within 4 years after publication (global models). To build these models, tokens found in the abstracts of Bioinformatics papers have been used as predictive features, along with other features like the journal sections and 2-week post-publication periods. To improve the accuracy of the global models, specific models have been built for each Bioinformatics journal section (Data and Text Mining, Databases and Ontologies, Gene Expression, Genetics and Population Analysis, Genome Analysis, Phylogenetics, Sequence Analysis, Structural Bioinformatics and Systems Biology). In these new models, the average success rate for predictions using the naive Bayes and logistic regression supervised classification methods was 89.4% and 91.5%, respectively, within the nine sections and for 4-year time horizon. Some of the imperfections are caused by uneven coverage, errors or changes in indexing policies that are often not retroactive or by mistaken or ineffective retrieval strategies employed by the users. Being aware of the limitations of the data sources and a closer inspection of the data we work with can improve the validity and interpretation of our findings. In this paper I discuss current limitations of several data sources, emphasize the ever-changing nature of these sources and recommend trying to understand the specific problems and limitations at the time the study is conducted instead of relying on methods recommended in previous studies. This observation holds for top journals as well as lower level journals. Yet in a majority of cases the 5-year impact factor is larger than the 2-year one. A special case was observed in which one article influenced macro statistics of a whole journal subject category. -- ************************************* Isidro F. This article presents a double analysis of the foundation that led to this success. On the one hand a thorough statistical study is undertaken with regard to all contributors and their contributions to Lexikos. To this end a metadata database was designed, with the aim to answer the question: 'Who publishes what type of material from where and when?' On the other hand a content analysis is carried out which focuses on the actual topics (i.e. 'keywords') in Lexikos. To this end an all-inclusive text corpus containing all the Lexikos material was built, with the aim to answer the question: 'What are the major trends in Lexikos?' Source: JOURNAL OF INFORMETRICS 4 (1): 1-13 JAN 2010 Language: English Document Type: Article Author Keywords: Citations analyses; Field; Impact KeyWords Plus: PUBLICATION; IMPACT; FREQUENCY; SCIENCE; PRODUCTIVITY; NATIONS; COUNTS; PAY Abstract: The citation counts are increasingly used to assess the impact on the scientific community of publications produced by a researcher, an institution or a country. There are many institutions that use bibliometric indicators to steer research policy and for hiring or promotion decisions. Given the importance that counting citations has today, the aim of the work presented here is to show how citations are distributed within a scientific area and determine the dependence of the citation count on the article features. All articles referenced in the Web of Science in 2004 for Biology & Biochemistry, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics were considered. We show that the distribution of citations is well represented by a double exponential-Poisson law. There is a dependence of the mean citation rate on the number of co-authors, the number of addresses and the number of references, although this dependence is a little far from the linear behaviour. For the relation between the mean impact and the number of pages the dependence obtained was very low. For Biology & Biochemistry and Chemistry we found a linear behaviour between the mean citation per article and impact factor and for Mathematics and Physics the results obtained are near to the linear behaviour. While the former counts citations, the latter recursively weights them with the prestige of the citing journals. We make a thorough comparison of the bibliometric concepts of popularity and prestige for journals in the sciences and in the social sciences. We find that the two notions diverge more for the hard sciences, including physics, engineering, material sciences, and computer sciences, than they do for the geosciences, for biology-medical disciplines, and for the social sciences. Moreover, we identify the science and social science journals with the highest diverging ranks in popularity and prestige compilations. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. It is easy to construct: considering a specific journal in a specific interval of time, h-spectrum is defined as the distribution representing the h-indexes associated to the authors of the journal articles. This tool allows defining a reference profile of the typical author of a journal, compare different journals within the same scientific field, and provide a rough indication of prestige/reputation of a journal in the scientific community. h-Spectrum can be associated to every journal. Ten specific journals in the Quality Engineering/Quality Management field are analyzed so as to preliminarily investigate the h-spectrum characteristics. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. The applicability of this index is tested on data retrieved from Google Scholar on marketing journal articles published between 2003 and 2007. The authors investigate the relationship between the hg-ranking, ranking implied by Thomson Reuters' Journal Impact Factor for 2008, and rankings in previous citation-based studies of marketing journals. They also test two models of consumption of marketing journals that take into account measures of citing (based on the hg-index), prestige, and reading preference. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. However, in this, they have faced challenges (e.g., from Web spam) in maintaining the level of scholarly precision-the ratio of relevant citations retrieved by search. This paper describes a hybrid approach that uses online social collaboration and reputation based social moderation to reduce the cost and to speed up the construction of scholarly bibliographies that are comprehensive, have better quality citations and higher precision. We implemented selected social features for an established digital humanities project (the Cervantes Project) and compared the results with a number of closed and open current bibliographies. We found this can help in building scholarly bibliographies and significantly improve precision outcomes. Source: BOLETIN DE LA SOCIEDAD ESPANOLA DE CERAMICA Y VIDRIO 48 (5): 255-260 SEP-OCT 2009 Language: Spanish Document Type: Article Author Keywords: Bibliometric analysis; Impact Factor; Spanish Universities; Research Centres; Ceramic Materials KeyWords Plus: IMPACT FACTORS; UNIVERSITIES; INDICATORS Abstract: In this paper we show for selected period (1997-2008), the journals in the subject Materials Science, Ceramics in which were for spanish authors published in Spain (24), analyzed from a bibliometric point of view the publications found (1240) the document type (Journal Article or Review), detailing the bibliometric results (number of documents weighted impact factor, relative impact factor and the ratio between the number of citations and the number of documents) from an institutional standpoint. Among those with a scientific representative stands out prominently the Institute of Ceramics and Glass. Impact Factor highlighted by the Institute of Construction Science Eduardo Torroja. Furthermore, the journal Boletin de la Sociedad Espanola de Ceramica y Vidrio brings together the 32.74% of the Spanish scientific output, being also the first journal for number of documents in that subject. It also confirmed a moderate international coll! aboration, with France and the United States as the main countries from that standpoint. This place of the world is all year long affected by the export of mineral dust as it moves westward to the north Atlantic ocean. The maximum in the dust activity is observed in summer (June-July), corresponding to a maximum in the aerosol optical thickness (above 0.5) and single scattering albedo (above 0.95). It also corresponds to a maximum in the top altitude of the transported aerosol layer (up to 6 km) and aerosol optical thickness scale height (up to 3.5 km) due to the presence of the Saharan Air Layer located between 2 and 6 km. The late summer shows an additional low level aerosol layer that increases in thickness in autumn. Severe dust storms are also systematically observed in spring (March) but with a lower vertical development and a stronger impact (! factor 2 to 3) on the ground-level mass compared to summer. Sporadic events of biomass burning aerosols are observed in winter (January) and particularly in January 2006 when the biomass burning aerosol are advected between 1.5 and 3.5 km high. On average, the seasonal signal in the aerosol optical properties and vertical distribution is very similar from year to year over our 3 year monitoring. URL: From loet at LEYDESDORFF.NET Wed Dec 30 03:06:25 2009 From: loet at LEYDESDORFF.NET (Loet Leydesdorff) Date: Wed, 30 Dec 2009 09:06:25 +0100 Subject: Generating network overlays to Google Maps from Pajek files (geographical networks) Message-ID: Paj2KML for generating (Pajek) network overlays to Google Maps at http:///www.leydesdorff.net/gmaps/index.htm Paj2KML uses a 1-mode pajek file (.net) with geographical encodable labels for generating a .kml file that can be used as an overlay to Google Maps (or Google Earth). The procedure is as follows: 1. Save the Pajek network file as .net file using the default in Pajek; use a DOS-based file name (? eight characters); 2. Use the labels for the geo-encoding, for example, at http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/geocoder/ . (Choose the Google option.) 3. Save the results file using a simple (DOS-based) file name; for example, "geo.txt"; 4. Store the Pajek .net-file, the geo-information (e.g., geo.txt), and the program in a single folder; 5. Run the program which prompts you for file names and generates "citycoll.kml"; (if one runs the program in a DOS-box, one obtains an error message if something goes wrong); 6. Upload the file at a web server; read it with Google Maps. (KML-files can also be read directly into Google Earth.) The output-file citycoll.kml is readable and can be changed with an ASCII editor (such as NotePad). For example, one can wish to change the colors of the lines or the shapes of the icons. See for an axample at http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=http:%2F%2Fwww.l eydesdorff.net%2Fgmaps%2Fcitycoll.kml&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=50.644639, 79.013672&ie=UTF8&z=2 . The program is based on CityColl.exe and Geo2KML.exe. The former program reads tagged-format files of the ISI Web-of-Science, and produces, among other things, a file cities.txt which can be used directly for the geo-encoding.
