Date: Thu, 4 Sep 2008 19:27:36 -0400 Subject: from ArXiv: Newman on First Mover Advantage Message-ID: The first-mover advantage in scientific publication Authors: M. E. J. Newman (Submitted on 2 Sep 2008) Abstract: Mathematical models of the scientific citation process predict a strong "first-mover" effect under which the first papers in a field will, essentially regardless of content, receive citations at a rate enormously higher than papers published later. Moreover papers are expected to retain this advantage in perpetuity -- they should receive more citations indefinitely, no matter how many other papers are published after them. We test this conjecture against data from a selection of fields and in several cases find a first-mover effect of a magnitude similar to that predicted by the theory. Were we wearing our cynical hat today, we might say that the scientist who wants to become famous is better off -- by a wide margin -- writing a modest paper in next year's hottest field than an outstanding paper in this year's. On the other hand, there are some papers, albeit only a small fraction, that buck the trend and attract significantly more citations than theory predicts despite having relatively late publication dates. We suggest that papers of this kind, though they often receive comparatively few citations overall, are probably worthy of our attention. The files are in the so-called Pajek format. (The visualization program Pajek is freely available at http://vlado.fmf.uni-lj.si/pub/networks/pajek/. ) The files are based on including all journals which contribute to the total citations (cited and citing, respectively) to the extent of more than 1% (after substraction of the journal "self"-citations). In order to enhance visualization effects (using, for example, Kamada-Kawai in Pajek) cosine values are provided for cosine > 0.2. For those of you who read this message under html, the following example is provided for the local citation impact environment of Scientometrics: The lines indicate strenght of the similarity in being-cited patterns in this local citation environment of Scientometrics. These files can also be used as lists of journals which provide a reference for comparing among journals in relevant citation environments in terms of impact factors, etc. See for more details about the methodology, my paper entitled "Visualization of the Citation Impact Environment of Scientific Journals: An online mapping exercise," Journal of the Amererican Society for Information Science and Technology 58(1), 25-38, 2007. Five main themes are covered: the information discipline per se; the foundations of that discipline; the nature of information; relations between discipline and profession; and education for information science. The continuing resonance of the writings of Farradane and Brookes is noted. The principles of thesaurus construction and use were worked out during the first two decades of the Institute's existence. Up until the end of the 1980s, most practical systems to exploit any of these vocabularies were held on cards, some of them highly ingenious. The subsequent arrival of the desktop computer, soon followed by the growth of networks providing access to an almost unimaginable quantity and variety of resources, has stimulated evolution of the knowledge organization schemes to exploit the technology available. Anecdotes of events and practical applications of controlled vocabularies illustrate this account of developments over the period. The origin of the field as a potential aid to the development of library and information services is noted, as is the transition from this status to that of a subject for research at PhD level and beyond. The development of the field has thus led to a division between the needs of academia for theoretically grounded work, and the needs of the field of practice for guidance for service development. There is, today, a disconnection between research and practice, to a significant extent: early research was undertaken by practitioners but today academic research dominates the scene. Suggestions are made as to how this disconnection can be repaired. Title: Health informatics: current issues and challenges Source: JOURNAL OF INFORMATION SCIENCE, 34 (4): 501-518 AUG 2008 Language: English Document Type: Article Author Keywords: health informatics; health information management; medical informatics Keywords Plus: WORLD-WIDE-WEB; PATIENT INFORMATION; VULNERABLE POPULATIONS; MEDICAL-RECORDS; CARE; SEEKING; BEHAVIOR; QUALITY; NEEDS; COMMUNICATION Abstract: Health informatics concerns the use of information and information and communication technologies within healthcare. Health informatics and information science need to take account of the unique aspects of health and medicine. The development of information systems and electronic records within health needs to consider the information needs and behaviour of all users. The sensitivity of personal health data raises ethical concerns for developing electronic records. E- health initiatives must actively involve users in the design, development, implementation and evaluation, and information science can contribute to understanding the needs and behaviour of user groups. Health informatics could make an important contribution to the ageing society and to reducing the digital divide and health divides within society. There is a need for an appropriate evidence base within health informatics to support future developments, and to ensure health informatics reaches its potential to improve the health and well- being of patients and the public. Metbods: The autbors identified 975 papers related to orofacial pain in the Current Contents Life Sciences and Clinical Medicine collections of the Thomson Scientific database that were published during 2004 and 2005 and analyzed them using bibliometric indicators. Results: Among the 54 countries involved, the United States ranks first by number of papers (293), followed by Japan (107), and the United Kingdom (90). The high volume of research activity in some Northern European countries is high-lighted, along with that of the European Union (384 papers). The scientific literature on orofacial pain was published in 247 journals; 13 of the top 15 most prolific journals for articles on orofacial pain were found in the Dentistry, Oral Surgery and Medicine subdiscipline of Current Contents/Clinical Medicine, and the journal of Orofacial Pain was the highest ranked for such articles. Conclusion: This study complements subject reviews of orofacial pain research and provides a more complete picture of the research activity in this field. KNOWLEDGE ORGANIZATION, 35 (2): 86-101 2008 Message-ID: E-mail Address: bh at db.dk Author(s): Hjorland, B (Hjorland, Birger) Title: What is Knowledge Organization (KO)? Source: KNOWLEDGE ORGANIZATION, 35 (2): 86-101 2008 Language: English Document Type: Article Keywords Plus: INFORMATION-SCIENCE; CLASSIFICATION Abstract: Knowledge Organization (KO) is about activities such as document description, indexing and classification performed in libraries, databases, archives etc. These activities are done by librarians, archivists, subject specialists as well as by computer algorithms. KO as a field of study is concerned with the nature and quality of such knowledge organizing processes (KOP) as well as the knowledge organizing systems (KOS) used to organize documents, document representations and concepts. There exist different historical and theoretical approaches to and theories about KO, which are related to different views of knowledge, cognition, language, and social organization. Each of these approaches tends to answer the question: "What is knowledge organization?" differently. LIS professionals have often concentrated on applying new technology and standards, and may not have seen their work as involving interpretation and analysis of meaning. That is why library classification has been criticized for a lack of substantive intellectual content. Traditional human-based activities are increasingly challenged by computer- based retrieval techniques. It is appropriate to investigate the relative contributions of different approaches; the current challenges make it imperative to reconsider this understanding. This paper offers an understanding of KO based on an explicit theory of knowledge. We present several rankings, based either on the number of articles that cited the journal or the per article impact. Our analyses cover various periods between 1991 and 2006, for most of which the Strategic Management Journal was in first place and Journal of Economics & Management Strategy (JEMS) second, although JEMS ranked first in certain instances. Long Range Planning and Technology Analysis & Strategic Management also achieve a top position. Strategic Organization makes an impressive entry and achieves a top position in 2003- 2006. In general, the number of international citations is very low in comparison with the geographical journals included in SCI and SSCI, with Pirineos, Cuaternario y Geomorfologia, Estudios Geograficos and Cuadernos de Investigacion Geografica as the most cited journals. Nevertheless, other journals as Scripta Nova, Boletin de la Asociacion de Geografos Espanoles and Investigaciones Geograficas show an increasinginternational impact. This paper confirms the necessity of considering the SCI journals and not only the SSCI ones to evaluate the international impact of the Spanish geographical journals . In most of the Spanish journals, the papers dealing on Physical Geography are the most cited in international journals. Taking a step back from the recurrent concerns with marginality and those with the absent feminist revolution in IR, we recast the problem of the complicated menage between feminism and the field of IR as a case of a failure to love. Drawing on the sociology of thinking of Randall Collins and his theory of interaction ritual chains, we read the logic of practice in intellectual fields as one rooted in emotion. In this framework, we theorize citation practices as bearing the trace of intellectuals' emotion- loaded coalitions of the mind. The article maps out the intellectual coalitions in IR with respect to the feminist question by reconstructing the citation networks emerging from the special issue of Millennium, published in 1988 on 'Women in IR'. The maps we put together are read as snapshots of the emotional economy of IR, allowing further reflection about the status of feminist scholarship in IR, about intellectual creativity and about change and stasis in our discipline. We conclude that it is IR which is in trouble, not feminists, with regard to creative potential. Feminists are not marginal in or to IR; instead they are part of a ring of creativity connecting the emotional energies of different disciplinary fields. This article examines the scientific impact and aging of conference proceedings compared to those of scientific literature in general. It shows that the relative importance of proceedings is diminishing over time and currently represents only 1.7% of references made in the natural sciences and engineering, and 2.5% in the social sciences and humanities. Although the scientific impact of proceedings is losing ground to other types of scientific literature in nearly all fields, it has grown from 8% of the references in engineering papers in the early 1980s to its current 10%. Proceedings play a particularly important role in computer sciences, where they account for close to 20% of the references. This article also shows that not unexpectedly, proceedings age faster than cited scientific literature in general. The evidence thus shows that proceedings have a relatively limited scientific impact, on average representing only about 2% of total citations, that their relative importance is shrinking, and that they become obsolete faster than the scientific literature in general. This approach, called the audience factor, takes into consideration the citing propensity of journals for a given cited journal, specifically, the mean number of references of each citing journal, and fractionally weights the citations from those citing journals. Hence, the audience factor is a variant of a fractional citation- counting scheme, but computed on the citing journal rather than the citing article or disciplinary level, and, in contrast to other cited-side normalization strategies, is focused on the behavior of the citing entities. A comparison with standard journal impact factors from Thomson Reuters shows a more diverse representation of fields within various quintiles of impact, significant movement in rankings for a number of individual journals, but nevertheless a high overall correlation with standard impact factors. Design/methodology/approach - Citation and co-citation analysis and social network analysis were used to trace the development path of conflict management research. The data were collected by searching the SSCI databases, based on 556 journal articles which were published between 1997 and 2006, and their cited references were analyzed and profiled. Findings - The paper shows that conflict management literature focuses on three key themes: workplace conflict and conflict management styles, cultural differences in conflict management, and conflict management in practice. In addition, research on group conflict and work performance has gained momentum in recent years. Originality/value - The intellectual structure of conflict management literature has received little attention in spite that a large number of studies have been done on conflict management. This paper will expose researchers to a new way of profiling key themes and their relationships in conflict management area, which will help academia and practitioners understand better contemporary conflict management studies. This study was to explore an alternative statistical approach to quantitatively and qualitatively assessing current research trends on global Parkinson's disease using the related literatures from the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Web of Science databases during the period of 1991-2006. Articles were concentrated on the analysis by scientific output characters, world collaboration, and the frequency of author keywords used. An exponential regression was applied to model the high correlation between cumulative number of articles and the year. International collaborative articles were more prevalent in recent years than earlier years, and increasing international collaboration would lead to more powerful articles due to the sharing of ideas and workloads, while China, Italy, Spain. and Austria are benefit a lot from the international cooperation. Finally, author keywords were analyzed contrastively, with research trends and recent hotspots provided. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved. Group Author(s): SITF Project Title: Evaluation of research products released during a national project funded by the Italian Ministry of Health Source: TRANSPLANTATION PROCEEDINGS, 40 (6): 1820-1822 JUL-AUG 2008 Language: English Document Type: Article Keywords Plus: LIVER-TRANSPLANTATION; NETWORK; EXPAND; POOL Abstract: Evaluation of research products released during activities that have received public funds should be a mandatory practice. In this study, we evaluated the research products released during the research program "Innovative Strategies to Expand Cadaveric Donor Pool for Liver Transplantation" (SITF Project), funded by the Italian Ministry of Health. The SITF Project prefigured the participation of Italian transplantation centers with more advanced experience in the field of liver transplantation. The research products released during the SITF Project were evaluated according to Guidelines for Research Evaluation of the Committee for Evaluation of Research (CIVR) from the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research. Thus, we considered as the research products released during the SITF Project the number of articles published in English language in peer-reviewed scientific journals by each operative unit (OU), as returned by PubMed. The articles were included on the basis of relationship with the research lines of the SITF Project and availability of the impact factor (IF) calculated by Thomson Scientific for each journal. Following these criteria, 62 research products were released during the executive phase of the SITF Project (January 1, 2004- December 31, 2005). All research products were original articles, with no reviews or letters. The articles were published in 10 different scientific journals (mean IF, 2.64 +/- 1.74). Spearman's rank test found a weak negative correlation between journal IF and number of published articles (r = -.2919; P = .413). Although the OU involved in the coordination of the SITF Project released a relatively high number of articles (n = 8; IF, 0.923 +/- 0.352), several other OUs obtained better results for number of articles (9-11) and/or IF (3.071 +/- 2.248 or 2.959 +/- 1.779). In projects that benefit from public funds, the potential negative impact of coordination activities to scientific production should be adequately considered.
