As an advocate for standardized documentation for fifty years.. I thought
the following paper by David Henige would be of interest to SIG-Metrics
readers.
In this connection see my essay on

Abstract:
The purpose of reference notes in scholarly writing is to provide readers
with the opportunity to learn more about an issue or to test an author's
credibility. As such, they need to include whatever details are necessary
to ensure that access be maximally efficient. These data should always
include page numbers for both quotes and close paraphrases. Unfortunately,
this practice is remarkably uncommon in the sciences and even the social
sciences. Failure to include these data is also a failure of good
epistemological practice.
In the mathematically-predictive hard sciences, citation is usually 2
viewed as a necessary evil(2).
When I failed to locate the cited proposition, I read the book again. Still
unable to find it, I tracked down the author and begged her to give me the
page numbers. With apologies, she admitted that what I sought was not in
the book(3).
Which system is selected by an editor or publisher should be determined by
judgments on its advantages and disadvantages for the expected readership
(4).
