ABSTRACT:
The paper reviews and analyses the cognitive conception of
polyrepresentation or multi-evidence applied to information retrieval.
Three types of aboutness are discussed, i.e. author, indexer, and user
aboutness, as well as isness of information objects, that is, other forms
of metadata, also serving as document features. The assumption that highly
relevant objects are found in the retrieval overlaps of cognitively and
functionally different origin is analysed with reference to performed
empirical tests, and the utility of clustering of objects by comple
representations for navigation or visualisation purposes is briefly
analysed.
