Address: Inforsk, Department of Sociology, Umea University 9-1 87 Umea, Sweden ABSTRACT: Co-citation analysis has been widely accepted as the foremost method for bibliometric mapping of research fields, whereas analyses based on keywords have been discussed, without gaining any overall acceptance. Ther are, however, advantages with keywords such as being understandable by others than those immediately connected to the field analyzed. This study aims at testing the relation between keyword and citation based analyses, and showing the significance of journal selection while mapping scientific fields. The preliminary study is based on 1135 Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) records from nine library and information science journal swith descriptors added from the Resources Information Center Database (ERIC) database. Three maps are compared: one based on co-citations, one on keyword co-occurrences, and one merging citations and keywords. The mappings show the same basic structures, and when merged, cited authors and keywords form corresponding relations. In comparison with earlier bibliometric studies, the wider journal selection makes it possible to identify a library science research area within library and information science. The purpose of this professional journals for high study was to evaluate the rigor of research and review articles in 4 national physical therapy journals. Subjects and Methods. All articles in 6 consecutive issues of the Australian Journal of Physiotherapy, Physical Therapy, Physiotherapy, and Physiotherapy Canada, published between January 2000 and June 2001 (N = 179) were reviewed. One trained reviewer identified the type and purpose of each article and assessed the rigor of treatment and review articles according to explicit criteria. Results. The majority of articles reviewed were original studies (56%). The majority of the research articles that dealt with human health care (66%) addressed topics that were not directly applicable to the provision of patient care such as measurement topics and studies on subjects without identified pathologies or impairments. Of the 179 journal articles, 19 met the standards for rigor (11%). The majority of these articles dealt with treatment. The pass rate per journal was as follows: Australian Journal of Physiotherapy, 10% (4/42); Physical Therapy, 15% (7/47); Physiotherapy, 12% (4/34); and Physiotherapy Canada, 7% (4/56). Discussion and Conclusion. Because such a small percentage of articles in these professional journals were identified as having direct application to patient care, physical therapists should attempt to access other sources of information to find additional high-quality evidence. A larger sample with a greater number of issues per journal may have yielded different results and indicated different trends, and further research appears to be warranted. Previous investigations are restricted to regressions of log size against log rank. In contrast, we use a nonparametric procedure to estimate Gibrat's Law for city growth processes as time-varying geometric Brownian motion and to calculate local Zipf exponents from the mean and variance of city growth rates. Despite variation in growth rates as a function of city size, Gibrat's Law does hold. The local Zipf exponents are broadly consistent with Zipf's Law. Deviations from Zipf's Law are easily explained by deviations from Gibrat's Law. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. Hence, the aim of this study was to identify the quantitative and (through journal Impact Factor) qualitative amount of ophthalmological articles coming from Switzerland. Materials and methods: With a specifically developed software we searched 70 ophthalmological journals indexed by Medline for articles from Switzerland. Results: Not counting the publications related to the annual meeting of the Swiss Ophthalmological Society, the amount of Swiss papers in ophthalmological journals indexed by Medline, increased between 1988 and 1999 by a factor of four. in proportion to the global amount of ophthalmological publications we calculated an increase by a factor of 2.6. The amount of publications grew particularly during the analysed time period in journals with high impact factors. In 1999 a total of 1.8% of the indexed ophthalmological articles originated from Swiss research institutes and hospitals. The average amount of authors of Swiss publications increased, thereby following an international trend. Conclusions: The increased amount of publications may rely on the growing role of Swiss research in ophthalmology as well as on a broadened and deepened international orientation of Swiss ophthalmology. The increased amount of authors can be explained by the growing complexity and interdisciplinarity of research projects. Both, the amount of publications and the number of authors, can be linked to the "publish or perish" paradigma. In this article, we show how readily available data from the Institute of Scientific Inquiry (ISI) may be used to estimate the number of scholarly articles written by an institution's faculty. We show how institutions are ranked according to total publications and the ratio of publications to full-time faculty, how these measures vary by type of institution, and how they are correlated with other selected measures of research resources and institutional quality. The use and non-use of these facilities by Nigerian academic scientists were investigated, using data collected from a survey of academic staff of selected disciplines in 10 universities. It was found that the scientists are still heavily dependent on printed information sources, especially journals, indexes and abstracts. The study reveals that 64.4% of them have a computer at their disposal, while 50.4% have access to, and are using, the Internet. Besides e-mail, very little use is made of other Internet facilities. Non-use of the Internet is attributable to problems of accessibility, ease of use and cost. Most of the non-users are aware of the information and communication potential of the Internet in their disciplines, and believe that the Internet will become indispensable in their research in the future. Although many papers have been published on endoscopic ultrasonography, a comprehensive overview of the subject matter presented has not yet been carried out. An extensive survey of the literature on endoscopic ultrasonography since its inception in the 1980 s was conducted in this study; key points are summarized. Methods: A computer-based PubMed search system was used to retrieve all available abstracts pertaining to endoscopic ultrasound from 1980 to the present. Data were collected concerning the impact factor, the various EUS instruments and fine-needle aspiration biopsy techniques used, and the subject matter, as well as the journals publishing the abstracts. Results: A total of 1259 articles were published in 65 journals: 440 (35%) Western European studies, 404 (32%) American studies, and 321 (26%) Japanese studies were retrieved. The total and average impact factor per paper was highest for American papers, followed by European papers and Japanese papers. Forty-seven percent of the papers were published in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Endoscopy. The most frequently discussed topics concerned the staging of various malignancies, including esophageal, gastric, pancreatic, and colorectal cancer. The average sample size per paper was in the range 25-50. The various types of study included retrospective inquiries (25%), reviews (24%), prospective studies (17%), and case reports (15%). Conclusions: Over the course of the past 20 years, there has been a progressive increase in the number of publications pertaining to endoscopic ultrasonography. Large-scale prospective studies are now needed to validate earlier reports. In addition, the diagnostic and therapeutic role of endoscopic ultrasound needs to be more widely publicized among physicians in all health-care fields, so that appropriate patients may be referred. One tool that has been used is Ingwersens Web impact factor. It has been demonstrated that several versions of this metric can produce results that correlate with research ratings of British universities showing that, despite being a measure of a purely Internet phenomenon, the results are susceptible to a wider interpretation. This paper addresses the question of which is the best possible domain to count backlinks from, if research is the focus of interest. WFs for British universities calculated from several different source domains are compared, primarily the .edu. ac.uk and .uk domains, and the entire Web. The results show that all four areas produce WIFs that correlate strongly with research ratings, but that none produce incontestably superior figures. It was also found that the WIF was less able to differentiate in more homogeneous subsets of universities, although positive results are still possible. The objective functions are based on selecting c representative objects (medoids) from the data set in such a way that the total fuzzy dissimilarity within each cluster is minimized. A comparison of FCMdd with the well-known relational fuzzy c-means algorithm (RFCM) shows that FCMdd is more efficient. We present several applications of these algorithms to Web mining, including Web document clustering, snippet clustering, and Web access log analysis. Particularly the self-organizing map has shown to be very well suited for this task. However, the interpretation of the resulting document maps still requires a tremendous effort, especially as far as the analysis of the features learned and the characteristics of identified text clusters are concerned. In this paper we present the LabelSOM method which, based on the features learned by the map, automatically assigns a set of keywords to the units of the map to describe the concepts of the underlying text clusters, thus making the characteristics of the various topical areas on the map explicit. One accepted method is citation analysis, where the use of an author's work is tracked by counting subsequent citations to that work. The development of Web-based scholarly journals offers new tools, such as server logs, for tracking an article's use and distribution. Scientific publications were downloaded from the Science Citation Index, years 1994-1999. A total of 260 Natural Resources scientists (24% of females) and 219 Chemistry ones (38% of females) were studied. Productivity tended to increase as professional category improved in the two areas. Within each category no significant differences in productivity were found between genders, but the outliers with the highest production were mostly males. Distribution of females by professional categories and number of years at the institution were analysed to detect possible gender discrimination in the promotion system. A more positive picture e merges in Chemistry than in Natural Resources, since a process of feminization of that area has started in the lowest professional categories and females' progression to the upper ranks is expected in the near future. The paper is divided into two parts : a methodological discussion and a case study on the chemical sector in Germany. The development of the technology sector defined matches remarkably well with stylised facts that institutional analysis in the chemical sector have provided us with so far. Moreover, the possibility of varying the level of aggregation in the analysis of technological are as discloses empirical evidence for the path-dependent development in the chemical sector after the advent of the organic chemistry and its application in the chemical synthesis of dye stuffs. Our findings enhance institutional and historical contributions about technological change in the chemical sector and suggest new research questions for innovation studies. The authors attempt to shed light on the observed decline in Swedish neuroscience through a detailed citation analysis at different level of aggregations. Thus national citation data are de composed to the institutional, departmental and individual level. Both, the decomposition of national science indicators and changing collaboration patterns in Swedish neuroscience reveal interesting details on the 'anatomy' of a decline. (Article, English) AUTHOR: Laudel, G SOURCE: SCIENTOMETRICS 57 (2). 2003. p.215-237 KLUWER ACADEMIC PUBL, DORDRECHT ABSTRACT: Today science policy makers in many countries worry about a brain drain, i.e., about permanently losing their best scientists to other countries. However, such a brain drain has proven to be difficult to measure. This article reports a test of bibliometric methods that could possibly be used to study the brain drain on the micro-level. An investigation of elite mobility must solve the three methodological problems of delineating a specialty, identifying a specialty's elite and identifying international mobility and migration. The first two problems were preliminarily solved by combining participant lists from elite conferences (Gordonconferences) and citation data. Mobility was measured by using the address information of publication data bases. The delineation of specialties has been identified as the crucial problem in studying elite mobility on the micro-level. Policy concerns of a brain drain were confirmed by measuring the mobility of the biomedical Angiotensin specialty. In this study, we test whether the same is true for the computer science departments in the UK. The relevant Web Impact Factors (WIFs) were calculated from the link data collected both from Alta Vista and the special academic crawler of the University of Wolverhampton. The numbers of staff members and Web pages in each computer science department were used as denominators for the WIFs calculation. The number of inlinks to the computer science departments correlated significantly with their research productivities, and WIFs with numbers of staff members as denominators correlated significantly with their Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) ratings. The number of staff members was confirmed to be a better indicator of departmental size than the number of Web pages within the department's domain. This shift in focus has lead to the development of new bibliometric methodologies and indicators. Technically, it meant a shift from bibliometric impact scores based on average values such as the average impact of all papers published by some unit to be evaluated towards indicators reflecting the top of the citation distribution, such as the number of 'highly cited' or 'top' articles. In this study we present a comparative analysis of a number of standard and new indicators of research performance or 'scientific excellence', using techniques applied in studies conducted by CWTS in recent years. It will be shown that each type of indicator reflects a particular dimension of the general concept of research performance. Consequently, the application of one single indicator only may provide an incomplete picture of a unit's performance. It is argued that one needs to combine the various types of indicators in order to offer policy makers and evaluators valid and useful assessment tools. Economists have, for a decade, paid great attention to local "spillovers" stating that industrial firms often draw advantages from the presence of nearby academic centres. The presence in the same areas of strong academic and technological resources is both a condition and a result of science-technology interactions. Concentrating on publications and patents as proxies of the science and technology level in regions, we built a typology of regions according to their commitment to the two knowledge-base activities and then analysed the co-locations of science and technology from several points of view. A fine-grain lattice, mainly based on standard Nuts3 level, was used. Co-location, at the EU level, is not a general rule. A strong potential for spillover/interaction does exist in the top-class regions which concentrate a high proportion of European S and T output. But for regions with a small/medium level of S&T activity, a divergence of orientations appears between a science-oriented family and a technology-oriented family, indicating an imbalance between local S and T resources. If we look at the S-oriented regions, whilst controlling for underlying factors, such as population and regional economic product, a significant geographic linkage between T and S appears. This suggests a trajectory of science-based technological development. A careful examination of S&T thematic alignments and specialisation is necessary to develop the hypothesis that fostering academic resources could increase the technological power along a growth path.
