It contrasts books which received twenty or more citations over a five-year period from all sources (thirty-one books in all) with how many citations these books had received in the two core Canadian anglophone sociology journals. The latter list at its upper levels was mainly oriented to feminist sociology and political economy (stratification and regionalism). The overall list was broader in its coverage of topics and the paper advances possible explanations for the difference between the two lists. Finally, the paper examines the one socio-demographic factor of sex to see whether women published highly visible books below, at or above their numbers in the sociological population. In fact women were more likely to publish (highly cited) books compared to articles in core journals. The reason is related to book publishing's receptivity to qualitative methodology. Spain is one of the few European countries to have recently totally incorporated the study of nursing into the university sector. Bibliometric studies may be of a great help for the consolidation of nursing research. Aim of the study. The aim of this paper is to describe bibliographic references in Spanish nursing research papers and their evolution over a decade. Method. The method consists of a retrospective bibliometric study of a sample (cluster sampling) of 622 research papers(original papers and review papers), which were contained in the Spanish nursing journals Enfermeria Cientifica, Revista ROL de Enfermeria, Enfermeria Clinica and Enfermeria Integral, and published from 1985 to 1994. The journal Nursing Research was selected for qualitative comparative purposes. A series of classic bibliometric indexes were used. Results. The mean of references per paper is 10.64 +/- 10.42; this increased over time (P < 0.001). Review papers have more references (P < 0.001). Price index (percentage of references published during the last 5 years) is 44% and the Insularity (percentage of references published in same country as the article) is 55%. References to journals predominate (58.6%), with a growing tendency for references to Spanish nursing journals, although they are still scarce (18.1% of the references to journals). Spanish is the language of most of the references (60.3%), the second language being English (36.1%). Conclusions. Bibliographic references in Spanish nursing research papers are scarce and not very specific: this happens both in regard to Nursing Research and to publications in other national and international science areas. However, there is an increasing tendency of references (including references to nursing journals) in the period analysed. The age of the references places Spanish nursing in ail intermediate position between the 'hard' sciences and the humanities; and, according to the type of documentation used, we find it halfway between experimental and natural sciences, and technologies and social sciences. There has been a slight increase in references in English in recent years. DT has been used to derive technical intelligence from a variety of textual database sources, most recently the published technical literature as exemplified by the Science Citation Index (SCI) and the Engineering Compendex (EC). Phrase frequency analysis (the occurrence frequency of multiword technical phrases) provides the pervasive technical themes of the topical databases of interest, and phrase proximity analysis provides the relationships among the pervasive technical themes. In the structured published literature databases, bibliometric analysis of the database records supplements the DT results by identifying the recent most prolific topical area authors; the journals that contain numerous topical area papers; the institutions that produce numerous topical area papers; the keywords specified most frequently by the topical area authors; the authors whose works are cited most frequently in the topical area papers; and the particular papers and journals cited most frequently in the topical area papers. This review paper summarizes: (1) the theory and background development of DT; (2) past published and unpublished literature study results; (3) present application activities; (4) potential expansion to new DT applications. In addition, application of DT to technology forecasting is addressed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Inc. All rights reserved. The flow of scholarly knowledge is mapped over time by combining multivariate statistics and other techniques. Observed citation frequencies are fitted to a chi-square model of importance, receptivity and similarity, while cluster analysis is employed to map changes in journal relationships over time. The results contradict at least one widely espoused and previously uncontested assertion, by revealing that the strategic management sub-discipline has evolved from a receptor to a transmitter of interdisciplinary knowledge and entered the mainstream of social science. The study demonstrates the potential to shed objective light on the social construction of knowledge and to address important issues in other scholarly disciplines. It owes a large part of its existence to the work of the National Science Foundation and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in the 1950s and 1960s. Given the centrality of S&T statistics in science studies, it is surprising that no history of the measurement exists in the literature. This article outlines such a history. The history is cast in the light of social statistics. Like social statistics. S&T indicators are produced mainly by governments but differ in a number of aspects. First, they, have not been developed to control individuals. Second, they have taken shape from the start at the international level. Third, they, reflect a consensus among states and their organizations. This article shows that this specificity is due to the sociopolitics that drives S&T measurement. The model was applied to the problem of ranking Marketing and International Business journals. There are more than 200 such journals, making direct ranking or rating very difficult, if not impossible. The result shows that the mathematical programming model uses very little information and yet can produce rankings that are in agreement with results obtained from direct ranking studies. Unlike previous works, in this work we additionally determined the fractions of publications on the most important compounds and mixtures within 1980-1998, Current trends in instrument snaking in gas chromatography are considered in more detail; references are given to the most important books and reviews published during this period. For the first time, the data is presented on the total number of publications on the main methods during the whole period of the development of chromatography. The total of obtained data made it possible to reveal topical directions of the development of the theory, fields of application, and instrumentation of gas chromatograph. This information will be useful for planning new theoretical and applied works and for the prediction of new developments in the field of gas-chromatographic instrument making. The distribution of publications over different chromatography methods was taken from bibliographic indices published in J. Chromatogr, Bibliography Section in 1981-1998. Table 1 for the first time presents the data on the total number of publications on main chromatography methods. The data on publications in 1944-1966 were taken from [3]; the other were taken from bibliographic indices of articles published in 1966-1998. Meghabghab gmeghab at hotmail.com Title Discovering authorities and hubs in different topological web graph structures Author Meghabghab G Journal INFORMATION PROCESSING & MANAGEMENT 38 (1): 111-140 JAN 2002 Document type: Article Language: English Cited References: 29 Times Cited: 0 Abstract: This research is a part of ongoing study to better understand citation analysis on the Web. It builds on Kleinberg's research (J. Kleinberg, R. Kumar, P. Raghavan, P. Rajagopalan, A. Tomkins, Invited survey at the International Conference on Combinatorics and Computing, 1999) that hyperlinks between web pages constitute a web graph structure and tries to classify different web graphs in the new coordinate space: out-degree, in-degree. The out-degree coordinate is defined as the number of outgoing web pages from a given web page. The in-degree coordinate is the number of web pages that point to a given web page. In this new coordinate space a metric is built to classify how close or far are different web graphs. Kleinberg's web algorithm (J. Kleinberg, Proceedings of the ACM-SIAM Symposium on Discrete Algorithms, 1998, pp. 668-677) on discovering "hub web pages" and "authorities web pages" is applied in this new coordinate space. Some very uncommon phenomenon has been discovered and new interesting results interpreted. This study does not look at enhancing web retrieval by adding context information. It only considers web hyperlinks as a source to analyze citations on the web. The author believes that understanding the underlying web page as a graph will help design better web algorithms, enhance retrieval and web performance, and recommends using graphs as a part of visual aid for search engine designers. Selected terms from the first issues for 1997, 1999 and 2000 of the CCODAb/Life Sciences, of the first issues for 1997 and 2000 of CCOD Proceedings, as well as from the SCI CDE for 1997 and January-June of 2000 were screened. True full-stop and semi-stop words commonly occur in the dictionaries of these databases which proves that there is an abundance of meaningless terms in titles and abstracts. On the other hand, many synonyms and antonyms are absent in these lists. Proper list enlarging could contribute to more effective preparation of both printed reference publications and large databases thus ensuring a more economic information retrieval by practical users and cientometricians. The necessity of an improved, semantically oriented policy in preparing the lists of full-stop words and semi-stop words used in modern databases worldwide is emphasised. Journal editors should encourage authors to reduce stop-word usage in article titles and keyword sets. Lewison : e-mail: g.lewison at soi.city.ac.uk http://gut.bmjjournals.com/cgi/content/full/49/2/295 TITLE International gastroenterology research: subject areas, impact, and funding AUTHOR Lewison G, Grant J, Jansen P JOURNAL GUT 49 (2): 295-302 AUG 2001 Document type: Article Language: English Cited References: 11 Times Cited: 0 Abstract: Aims - To examine the volume and potential impact of gastroenterology research outputs from 1985 to 1998 from 14 developed countries; the overlap with research in cancer, infectious diseases, and genetics; and the funding sources for this research. To determine if countries' research outputs correlated with their burden of corresponding diseases and inputs to their research. Methods - Selective retrieval of papers from the Science Citation Index and manual look up of a sample to determine funding sources. Classification of journals by four categories of research level (clinical/basic) and potential impact (low/high). Results - Gastroenterology represents about 8% of world biomedical research but over 11% in Italy, Japan, and Spain. Its potential impact is highest (but declining) for the USA. It has increased noticeably in most European countries, particularly in Finland. Gastroenterology research has become more clinical in Japan, Spain, Australia, and the Netherlands but more basic in Canada, Germany, Finland, Israel, and South Africa. Funding comes primarily from national governments, followed by national private non- profit sources and industry but little industrial funding occurs in some countries. There is a strong and positive correlation between reported deaths from gastrointestinal neoplasms and countries' outputs of research in gastrointestinal oncology. Conclusions - Bibliometric analysis can reveal differences between countries in their research in a subject when a common methodology is applied to an international database. Variations in research methods in different countries can plausibly explain some of the variation in the potential impact of the work. Sher 1924-1996: Polymath /information scientist extraordinaire Author Garfield E Journal JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR INFORMATION SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 52 (14): 1197-1202 DEC 2001 Document type: Article Language: English Cited References: 24 Times Cited: 0 Abstract: Over a 35-year period, Irving H. Sher played a critical role in the development and implementation of the Science Citation Index (R) and other ISI (R) products. Trained as a biochemist, statistician, and linguist, Sher brought a unique combination of talents to ISI as Director of Quality Control and Director of Research and Development. His talents as a teacher and mentor evoked loyalty. He was a particularly inventive but self-taught programmer. In addition to the SCI,(R) Social Sciences Citation Index,(R) and Arts and Humanities Citation Index,(R) Sher was involved with the development of the first commercial SDI system, the Automatic Subject Citation Alert, now called Research Alert,(R) and Request-A-Print Cards. Together we developed the journal impact factor and the Journal Citation Reports.(R) Sher was also the inventor of the SYSTABAR System of coding references and Sherhand. He was involved in key reports on citation-based historiography, forecasting Nobel prizes, and served as a referee for JASIS over a 20-year period.
