To test the creative-expertise hypothesis, the careers of 59 classical composers were examined according to the differential aesthetic success of their 911 operas. The potential predictors were seven measures of domain-relevant experience: cumulative years (since first operas, first compositions, and first lessons) and cumulative products (genre-specific operas, all operas, all vocal compositions, and all compositions). The nonmonotonic longitudinal trends and the relative explanatory power of the expertise-acquisition measures indicate that complex specialization ("overtraining") and versatility ("cross-training") effects may determine creative development across the life span. The broader implications of the findings are then discussed. (C) 2000 Academic Press. The distinct discourses in turn reflect a perceived relationship between author and reader. This paper addresses the question of how linguistic choices are used for the construction of a view of marketing activity that corresponds to the expectations of a particular readership. The paper examines ways of presenting market activity and compares the rhetorical resources used for building texts. Three types of journals were distinguished by readership and by editorial emphasis on either practice or research. Articles in three journals were analyzed with a grammatical model of sentence subjects which reveals abstraction and concreteness in texts. Citations were also analyzed to see how authors present research and researchers and what the reporting verb choices indicate about authors' commitment to propositions. An examination of non-linguistic text led to identification of variable uses of devices for reader engagement with text. Results indicate separate discourses in terms of conceptuality and concreteness in grammatical subjects but suggest less clearly defined patterns of citation. (C) 2000 The American University. Besides proving nonstationarity (not surprising !) they found that at low traffic rates interarrival times have marginal distributions that are well-approximated by Weibull distributions; if however, the traffic rates increase then these Weibull distributions tend to an exponential distribution, and interarrival times between packets become almost independent. This means that at higher rates the packet inter-arrivals are almost a Poisson process, so that at those rates the Internet behaves like classical telephony. Recall that it was one of the surprising discoveries of the 1990's that the Internet was - statistically - different from classical telephone lines. Now, these Bell Lab investigators state that it all depends on the traffic rates. Citation errors are common among nursing journals. But, there are no data regarding the factors that predispose to these errors. Objective. To determine the risk factors that predispose to citation error in peer-reviewed nursing journals. Methods. Five hundred and fifty references were selected randomly from articles published in eleven nursing journals for the year 1998. The incidences of major and minor citation errors were determined by comparing with the original articles. The relative odds of citation errors for the number of authors, collaborating institutions and the length of the reference list were calculated, The correlation between the scientific quality of the journal (by means of journal impact factor and immediacy index) and the incidence of citation error were also determined. Results. The incidence of citation errors is comparable to those reported previously. Long reference lists in articles written by a single author predicted strongly the occurrence of minor citation errors. Journals with a high impact factor and immediacy index tend to contain fewer minor mistakes. None of these factors affect the incidence of major errors. Conclusion. Contributors to journals should be aware of the various risk factors for citation errors. Citation accuracy may be improved by modifying these factors. Aggregated journal-journal citations for 1999 are compared with similar data in the Journal Citation Report 1998 of the Science Citation Index. In addition to indicating local change, probabilistic entropy measures enable us to analyze changes in distributions at different levels of aggregation. The results of various possible indicators are discussed and compared, for example, by elaborating the journal-journal mappings. The relevance of this indicator for science and technology policies is further specified. "The Appreciation of Models of Complex Dynamics in the Case of Technological Innovation," Paper for the International Conference on Computing Antipatory Systems CASYS'2001, Li?ge, Belgium, August 2001. at http://www.leydesdorff.net/casys01/index.htm Arthur?s (1988 and 1989) model of the ?lock-in? predicates the dominance of a single technology, while Kauffman?s (1993 and 1995) NK-model investigates the emergence of different sub-optima in a ?rugged fitness landscape.? Can the two mechanisms also be offset against each other? Under what conditions can one expect a technological monopoly or an oligopoly to prevail? What can serve as a discursive ground for making comparisons among the results of these sophisticated models? In this study, the two models are first reconstructed using a common language for the coding. Second, I address the question of how one can let the one model disturb the other. The reduction of the complexity in the coding enables us to focus on the theoretical assumptions. For example, the introduction of a Schumpeterian dynamics of ?creative destruction? can be shown to introduce variation in a rugged fitness landscape. The results of the simulations will be made visual using the technique of a cellular automaton. -------------------------------------------------------------- Loet Leydesdorff Science & Technology Dynamics, University of Amsterdam Amsterdam School of Communications Research (ASCoR), Oude Hoogstraat 24, 1012 CE Amsterdam, The Netherlands Tel.: +31-20- 525 6598; fax: +31-20- 525 3681 mailto:loet at leydesdorff.net ; http://www.leydesdorff.net/ *************************************************************** "A Sociological Theory of Communication: The Self-Organization of the Knowledge-Based Society" at http://www.upublish.com/books/leydesdorff.htm "The Challenge of Scientometrics: The development, measurement, and self-organization of scientific communications" at http://www.upublish.com/books/leydesdorff-sci.htm ***************************************************************
